“I was in a car accident when I was 17 and suffered burns to my arms and face," Dr. Setty says. "I had skin graft surgery to my arms and hands and was in a burn center for almost three weeks. That experience got me interested in medicine and specifically surgery. I was at the Ohio State Burn Center, and I went to Ohio State for medical school. During my first year of medical school, the plastic surgeon that took care of me gave us a lecture on plastic surgery. I really enjoyed the lecture, and that is what got me interested in the field of plastic surgery.” You only have to speak with any of the 14 women with whom he works to see the pride they have in working with Dr. Setty. They speak of how he always puts his patients first and truly consults with them to achieve the best outcome. Have $10,000 to spend? After surviving a tragic situation at the age of 14, Maylee Thomas decided that one day she would create something good from it. Love Life is that "something good." Over the years, Maylee and her husband, George Fuller, had played in a band together and frequently performed at nonprofit fundraising events. “We saw a lot of money going to [their] expenses and not so much to the benefit of the people the nonprofit was supporting.” Therefore, Maylee, George and a couple of their friends put together a charitable event one year around Christmastime. At the event, the band played free of charge, and by the night’s end, $3,800 was raised. “We took that $3,800 and purchased gifts for pregnant,

single moms living in a home. It was just so inspiring that we thought we should do this all the time,” Maylee says. Consequently, Love Life was founded as a nonprofit and has continued to grow over the past 25 years. Love Life participates in numerous outreach programs to let moms know where they can get help if in abusive situations. All of Love Life’s beneficiaries are related to the at-risk, whether it’s poverty, abuse, the need for shelter or even counseling services. “It’s more about connecting and getting them [children and their mothers] with the right people to help them.” Love Life’s mission promotes awareness in the community and encourages generosity and involvement. Maylee has always raised money for Love Life and decided her boutique, which opened in 2010, should benefit her foundation, as well. “When George decided to open up the Guitar Sanctuary, I just thought it would be kind of cool because we had people coming in all the time. Moms have something to look at while their kids were taking lessons or their husbands were looking at guitars.” Maylee chooses much of the merchandise from companies who already donate their proceeds to various charities. The store is replete with reasonably priced clothing, accessories and various gift items. B AY W I L LO W D E S I G N Located on the square in historic downtown McKinney is Bay Willow Design, the specialty shop and studio of Jenny Mathison-Foster, fondly known as “Jenny the Hat Lady," who is a widely sought-after milliner in North Texas. Jenny’s love of hats, though, nudged its way into her life a snippet at a time. With her degree in art history and design and an emphasis on fibers, Jenny wanted to be a fabric designer. However, after graduating, marrying and moving to Chicago where her husband attended graduate school, she took a job with Crate & Barrel, becoming a store designer working in the stores and then at corporate. “It was 20-plus years ago that I read an article on hat-making, and it piqued my interest because of what I did...I was working with my hands, and I had a fiber background," Jenny says. "The thing that intrigued me was a picture of old hat blocks, and I thought, ‘That’s how you make a hat?’ I had no idea! I thought, ‘How do I learn this?’ This was back in the '90s when hats were so out of fashion.” While in Chicago, Jenny explored hat-making. In 2001, Jenny and her husband relocated to McKinney. She continues to find places to learn new techniques beyond the basics and has worked with milliners from both Britain and Australia. Using various materials, sinamay straw is a popular choice. British milliner Stephen Jones had discovered this material while visiting a flower market in Japan. Originally, it was a material being used to wrap their flower bouquets. Jenny explains that the fashionable material itself isn’t expensive; however, the process of crafting the hat is. “I use three layers [of sinamay] to give it substance so it will hold its shape, but every edge has to be finished off [wired and covered.] If I put it in my sewing machine, it’ll either break my thread or break my needle, so everything about it is hand-sewn. But they do make the prettiest, coolest, most amazing hats.” Jenny crafts hats and headpieces from fedoras to fascinators and everything in between. THIS IS OUR FIRST "WANNABE CHEF" SUBMISSION FROM OUR OWN EDITORIAL COORDINATOR. However, you may just find

this really simple dish to be a great party platter, appetizer or even part of the main course. The filling for the egg yolks to be added has only four components. The brie cheese is an option, but this is actually one of the only times I really care for brie.

INGREDIENTS I do suggest using really good brands of the ingredients. For example, try to get a double cream, imported French brie. I used the Kirkland brand from Costco; it is very creamy, and the texture complements the deviled egg very well. For the French vinaigrette dressing, I used Briana's Homestyle. Being part Italian, I had to go with the Barilla Traditional Basil Pesto. However, just about any yellow mustard will suffice. While the eggs are boiling, mix the following ingredients (per 4 eggs): + 3 tablespoons basil pesto + 5 teaspoons vinaigrette dressing + 5 teaspoons yellow mustard

DIRECTIONS Once the eggs are boiled and peeled, slice as usual for a deviled egg. Scoop out the egg yolk into your prepared mix and blend well. Fill the empty egg white pieces with the mixture and place a small piece of brie. Cut small wedges of the brie cheese, I suggest one for each egg half. Pepperoncinis are optional. I hope you find this to be an unusual and tasty addition to your dining options! Buon appetito! 34
