A common question we hear as we age is “What do you want to be when you grow up?“ And as children, our imaginations run wild with big dreams. However, as we grow older our passion for certain hobbies, skills, and interests tend to lead us on a more fine-tuned path. From my first lemonade stand to selling my first ad in the high school newsmagazine, I’ve always had a passion for business and marketing. After graduating college and starting my career, my experiences and desire to help local businesses ultimately led to launching Mason + Deerfield Lifestyle. For our April issue, we ‘Explore’ the passion and motivation behind local organizations helping individuals and families throughout our communities, students excelling in science in the classroom and on the national stage, and a group of musicians sharing a symphony of sounds. Celebrating its 25th Anniversary, the Warren County Foundation (WCF) has been helping people help others through their Quality of Life Community Impact focus areas. Learn more about the many different organizations that have benefited from the WCF and how you can help this organization continue to go “Beyond Charity” by contributing to their Forever Endowment. More than 50 years ago, Kindervelt was founded to raise funds to support Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Later this month, local chapter Kindervelt #19, based out of Heritage Club, is preparing for their 15th annual Lunch at the Links that will benefit the construction of the Critical Care Building and more. Mason City Schools provides incredible opportunities for students to explore different subjects, interests and extracurricular activities. Mason Kiwanis 40th Annual Golf Classic The Kiwanis Club of Mason is celebrating their 40th annual Mason Kiwanis Golf Classic on May 10 at The Grizzly Golf and Social Lodge. IT’S ALL FOR THE KIDS Kindervelt #19’s annual Lunch
at the Links supports Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Cincinnati Children’s Hospital is known countrywide as one of the leaders in child health services. Beyond a fantastic medical staff, many other ingredients contribute to its success. One such ingredient is Mason’s Kindervelt #19, an all-volunteer auxiliary that raises funds for Children’s Hospital.
“We are so lucky to have the third best Children's Hospital in the nation right here in Cincinnati,” Kindervelt #19 President Jeanne Reisinger shares. “Many of us have seen firsthand the lifesaving work they provide.” Started in 1971, Kindervelt is now composed of 21 neighborhood volunteer groups across Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. Kindervelt #19 is the Heritage Club branch. Kindervelt is currently in the midst of a four-year campaign that benefits the construction of the Critical Care Building and funds an endowed chair position for the Division of Critical Care Medicine. A major portion of Kindervelt #19’s contributions to this campaign come from their annual Lunch at the Links, a ladies' luncheon, held each April at Heritage Club in Mason. “Most of the early Kindervelt members lived in the Heritage Club neighborhood or were members, so it made sense to leverage the beauty and proximity of the club to host a ladies' luncheon to raise funds in the spring,” Jeanne explains.
“We try to role model the Kindervelt motto - ‘Together, We Can Make a Difference.’ At the end of the day, it’s all for the kids.” The Heritage Club, where the annual Lunch at the Links event is held.

This year’s fifteenth annual event will take place on Saturday, April 29, beginning at 11 a.m. The theme is “Run for the Roses.” Guests will enjoy Derby-inspired décor and cocktails. The silent auction will feature more than 100 experiences and merchandise worth over $15,000. “There are a variety of silent auction gift baskets with goodies and gift cards from local businesses, and raffles including a stocked party cart with alcohol and munchies, highly sought-after bourbons and a luxury item from James Free Jewelers that is always a crowd favorite,” Kindervelt member and Sponsorship Chair, Suzy McBrayer tells us. In addition to the donated items for the silent auction, companies can make charitable donations as sponsors of the event. Sponsorship giving ranges from $100 as a “Friend of Kindervelt” to Platinum Sponsorship at the $3,000 giving level. “Attending Lunch at the Links is something I look forward to,” shares Suzy. “The food is wonderful and the atmosphere is fun, as guests dress to the theme of the event.” Kindervelt #19 is also always welcoming new members. “We try to role model the Kindervelt motto - ‘Together, We Can Make a Difference.’ At the end of the day, it's all for the kids,” Jeanne enthuses. The Warren County Foundation (WCF) has been making a difference for more than two decades. Established to help people help others, the Foundation has become an integral part of the community. Their mission is to improve the quality of life in Warren County and to create an avenue to facilitate contributions. As the Foundation's President and CEO Tom Seddon says, "Everyone cares about something." Recognizing the growing demand for services, The Warren County Foundation has innovated its strategy by creating an endowment fund. An endowment fund is an account in which the principal is never touched. The organization only draws from the interest that has accrued. The goal is for the Forever Endowment to be a five-million-dollar fund operating on a four percent spending policy, increasing the yearly gifts the WCF could grant by $200,000. By contributing to the endowment, residents can help the Foundation increase their impact. "People think 'on my own I can't do enough,' but the Foundation provides a vehicle to leverage and increase those gifts," explains Mike McGinty, ambassador for WCF. While donations can be made online or by dropping a check off in person, a more active way to get involved is to attend the 16th annual WCF Community Service Awards on June 8. The gala is an opportunity to recognize those who have made significant contributions to the community.
While the number of awards is limited, there are countless people who deserve them. The WCF’s Quality of Life Community Impact focus areas are Community Health, Education, Poverty & Hunger, Recreation & Leisure, Environment, and Economic Growth & Vitality. This translates to popular initiatives such as working with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, providing free books to children from birth to age five. It also means quiet moments of service. Recently, the Foundation teamed up with three donors - the Leasure Family Fund, Kent Savage, and Mike & Amy Schneider - leveraging their funds to purchase Winnie, a therapy dog. Winnie serves Warren County Children Services, the Child Advocacy Center of Warren County, and Warren County Juvenile Court. These institutions now have a resource that will provide ongoing relief for children during some of the most stressful times in their lives. Kelly Carpenter, Warren County Children’s Services supervisor praised the initiative saying, “Winnie has made such an impact in her short time with us, and we can’t wait to see what’s ahead for her!” Building resilience in all children is a priority for the WCF. Through supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Warren County, the WCF helps connect children to adult mentors, ensuring children facing adversity receive the support they need through one-to-one relationships. Adults facing abuse are also supported by the WCF. Safe on Main provides shelter services for survivors of domestic violence in Warren County. Safe on Main staff members also go to court with survivors so they don’t have to face their abusers alone. They help people file for protection orders, connect them to LegalAid, provide therapy and facilitate support groups. Additionally, the WCF supports an incredible organization through Warren County Community Services called Adult New Readers. This service trains volunteers and pairs them with adults who need support gaining literacy. Greater literacy skills translate directly to a larger network of possibilities and a stronger economy.

The Mason High School (MHS) Science Olympiad team has proven themselves a force to be reckoned with. Their consecutive first-place victories at the national competitions in both 2021 and 2022 have cemented them as some of the top young scientists in the country. And they’re ready to defend their title at Wichita State on May 20. The Science Olympiad is an incredibly challenging competition that requires students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, astronomy, and engineering. The competition’s 23 events include building challenges, laboratory-based experiments, data analysis and interpretation and other creative problem-solving activities. The 15-member teams must work together to solve the challenges presented in each event. These events are designed to be difficult and require exceptional knowledge, skills and critical thinking to succeed. The team is coached by Steven Seiler, who helps the students prepare for the competition. Mason has been ranked within the top four teams in the state for six years. When asked about the prerequisites for joining, team captains Katie Wilson
and Grace Chi are only half joking when they say, “Not sleeping a lot.” Unlike other Science Olympiad teams where you either make it or you don’t, the Mason team hosts mock tests every few weeks. Katie and Grace explain that this allows every interested student to level up, and encourages those who have already qualified to stay on top of their game. This strategy also ensures that each person competing is the best for the event at hand. While rigorous, the team is happy to work hard as long as they are working together. Katie explains, “I love science, learning and winning, but most of all I love the culture that Mason creates. By the end of the year, we’ve spent so many late nights studying together and are such a close-knit group. My favorite part of the Science Olympiad is the family that I’ve found within it.” The MHS Science Olympiad Team has proven once again that they are the best of the best. As returning champions, they know that they will be in the spotlight. But this team is no stranger to pressure and the national championship will be no exception. The Mason Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is a new community-minded orchestra of professional musicians who perform symphonic and popular classics. The orchestra began with a meeting of Mason minds with the goal to create an orchestra that could serve the communities of Mason, Deerfield and the surrounding areas. “Our orchestra’s mission is to enrich the cultural fabric of the area and provide entertaining and uplifting experiences for the people of Mason,” Founder and Music Director of the Mason Symphony Orchestra, Dr. Lucy Ginther explains. “My inspiration was imagining ways to create the sense that every person is entitled to experience beauty, as a birthright.” Beginning with volunteer musicians, the orchestra now offers opportunities for trained community string players and young musicians on scholarship to perform with professionals in major symphonic and pops concerts. The MSO also pioneered a series of Sensory Friendly Children’s Concerts to allow children to engage with classical music. “The Mason Symphony Orchestra exists to make music accessible, entertaining and uplifting to everyone,” Dr. Ginther tells us.
Currently on faculty at Ohio State University where she teaches viola, Dr. Ginther makes the trip to campus from Mason two days a week during the term. “I moved away for five years, but returned because I enjoy the vitality and quality of life in Mason,” she shares. “There are big city opportunities here, but more importantly, a strong sense of community.” A core value of the Mason Symphony Orchestra is educational development. A scholarship was created to provide opportunities for advanced area students. High school students who reside in Warren County during the current school year can apply to their annual Student Scholarship Competition. Student musicians can apply under the categories of strings, brass/woodwind or keyboard/piano. The overall winner receives $300 and a solo performance with the MSO on May 13. “To the people of Mason: MSO is YOUR orchestra,” Dr. Ginther enthuses. “We strive to be a reflection of the great cultural wealth we have while providing excellent entertainment!” For more information, and to apply for the student scholarship, please visit MasonSymphonyOrchestra.org.
