And while the particulars look different for each of us, the meaning and value it holds for all of us is undeniable. Growing up in Cincinnati, I’ve always dreamed of living in a HOMEARAMA® home—who hasn’t? The annual luxury home show has been hosted in Mason and Deerfield Township multiple times, most recently at Kensington of Mason. Take a tour through one of the incredible homes with local real estate expert Tiffany Allen-Zeuch who shares tips on building your own custom home. The Mason Scholarship Foundation Now Accepting Applications The Mason Scholarship Foundation is accepting scholarship applications until April 14 from 2023 high school graduates residing in the Mason City School District. Four-year scholarship applicants are advancing their education with a four-year degree from an accredited university/college. Two-year scholarship applicants are advancing their education with a two-year degree from an accredited college or a certificate from a technical or vocational program. The home studio of Mason artisan Maureen LaBoa hosts a parade of worn-out books, thrifted furniture and vintage papers. Where others may see junk, Maureen sees potential, finding beauty and purpose for items that others might discard. Her transformation of these items is inspiring: bookmarks crafted from books beyond repair, and furniture given a second life with paint, illustrations, maps, blueprints and nautical charts. With her lovingly and skillfully crafted creations, Maureen gives second chances to the forgotten, and she does it all for the benefit of U.S. military personnel.

Maureen and her former Navy officer husband Tony LaBoa are avid supporters of Semper Fi & America’s Fund, a national nonprofit that supports injured and critically ill members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families. The LaBoas were first introduced to the organization when Tony was preparing to run the 2006 Marine Corps Marathon, a popular road race that requires fundraising. “This was back when Iraq and Afghanistan were very busy and unfortunately, the military hospitals were very busy and there was a definite need. I asked Maureen if she wanted to run with me…,” Tony begins. “Um, no,” Maureen chimes in, “Somebody has to ring the cowbell,” she says with a laugh. “She didn’t want to run, but Maureen wanted to be involved in the fundraising,” Tony explains. The LaBoas held a big October tag sale each year and donated the proceeds. Then Maureen started

Painting for Patriots, a creative endeavor to gather even more funds, donating 100% of her net proceeds to the cause. Tony’s first Marine Corps Marathon was the starting gun for 17 years of support. Since 2006, this passionate couple has used their talents to donate more than $135,000 to the Semper Fi & America’s Fund. “It’s so cool to be part of something bigger than yourself,” Maureen says. “Tony loves to run and I love to create. We are lucky that we get to do what we like and really help people we want to help by dovetailing with a great organization.” Their commitment to support Semper Fi & America’s Fund is a full family affair. The LaBoa’s two adult children, Jackson and Katie, a Navy nurse, can also be found at races and booths alongside their parents. Last October, Tony ran his seventeenth race for the Fund, the longest of any of the marathon team’s participants. CONTINUED >

“Once we were connected with Semper Fi & America’s Fund, we realized how much good they were doing,” Tony shares. “They are very good stewards. They are incredible at finding out what’s needed and making it happen.” “When military families ask, I tell them, ‘You served for me without knowing me, so I can raise money for you without knowing you,’” Maureen explains. “We feel very strongly that we owe them. They go off and serve and make a thousand sacrifices and fight for us. When they come back less than whole, it is all of our responsibilities to do as much as we can for them,” she says. The LaBoas are already gearing up for this year's shows. Most of the organizations are still in the application and confirmation process, but they are looking forward to participating in the O.F.F. Markets at Summit Park in Blue Ash, Deerfield Handmade Market at Cottell Park, craft shows at various local high schools and the Brigade Holiday Market at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. They bring the bookmarks made from books beyond repair to each show and the selection is always changing so there's something new to see every time. “I'm always finding ways to give a second life to other bits of the tattered remnants,” says Maureen. “My goal is to bring something different to every single market.” Make a meaningful purchase that makes a difference—find Maureen’s unique handmade goods at local craft shows or online via Painting for Patriots on Facebook.com and Instagram. com. A Passion for the Trades

Rick Boyle has been helping out at job sites since he was 11 years old. He remembers carrying mortar for brick layers and cleaning up after framers. Those tasks created a life-long affinity for the trades. Rick is the owner and founder of Creative Contracting, Inc. in Mason. After beginning his career as a carpenter, his great reputation led him to start his own business in an organic manner. His initial business model encompassed residential new construction, framing and roofing and now Creative Contracting offers remodeling, room additions, general contracting and construction management services. Rick is proud of the resiliency of Creative Contracting, which was established in 1993. As they celebrate their 30th anniversary this year, one employee remains from the company’s first year in business and multiple second-generation employees call Creative Contracting home. The trades have experienced a labor shortage in recent years. Rick describes how the shortage has come about, “One, maybe even close to two generations have just forgone the trades and gone to college for other types of careers. They say that the average tradesman these days is approaching 50. If you get into some of the specific trades your average plumbers are closer to 60 and that's not something you just learn overnight. It takes years to become a master plumber or a certified electrician.” A shift in the perception of the trades as more than just a fallback option is needed, and according to Rick has already begun. Several like-minded local business owners formed Conduit to discuss ways to stimulate growth in the trades workforce. The Certified Apprentice Program (CAP) was born from these conversations. Most high schools have cut programs that offer students exposure to the trades.

CAP offers high school students an introduction to the trades through a week-long course. Two hour modules each day are spent on fundamentals of framing, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, drywall and painting. The program is about showing kids with an interest that they have options after graduation. The benefits are many as the students learn basic skills which can be used over a lifetime. Teachers and volunteers gain from the experience as well. Rick says of his experience with the program, “It’s like watching that light bulb go off. Seeing that ‘aha’ moment and hearing the laughter and seeing the fun the kids have when they're doing the projects.” Participating allows Rick to share his passion for the industry by teaching introductory courses and speaking at high schools on behalf of CAP. The members of Conduit have also had some success approaching high schools about adding curriculum covering careers in the trades and meet regularly to discuss ways to get the word out about the benefits of these professions. “CAP creates a bridge between master craftsmen who invest their talents into building and fixing things and high school students who want to explore what that might look like for them,” says CAP cofounder, Jerry Beerman. The CAP program seeks to instill a strong work ethic, a sense of pride and good habits while laying the foundation for a career with a future. Rick believes there are a number of paths to financial success and stability. He says, “Find something you enjoy doing, ignore the naysayers, show up early, pay attention and work hard. Chances are success will find you.” Rick is proof of this. He wears his love for the industry on his sleeve. His enthusiasm for the CAP program and his desire to share his passion for his work with students is apparent.

“CAP creates a bridge between master craftsmen who invest their talents into building and fixing things and high school students who want to explore what that might look like for them.” Regarding pursuing a career in the trades, Rick shares, “What we do can really be fun.” He also urges people to remember that there are jobs beyond physical labor. Rick explains, “There are so many different pieces to what we do. Even within our small company, we've got designers, interior decorators, sales and project managers so there are a lot of different facets to a remodeling company that go beyond just physically doing it.”

CAP has the potential to change perceptions and lives. After a recent speech to Career Quest students, one attendee remarked, “I feel like I learned more in that hour than I've learned at school all year.” To choose a trade profession, Rick advises, “My guidance would be to find something that makes you happy, find out how to make money doing it and find someone to pay you to do that job.”

A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone. When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TAKING THE COUNTER MATERIAL UP THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

WARMING UP THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

CONTRAST, CONTRAST, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.

Brooke’s Pro Tip: I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.
