I’m a big fan of cooking shows like Top Chef and MasterChef Junior. It amazes me how they take simple ingredients and create mouthwatering culinary masterpieces in every episode. I may never get to their level, but luckily the Mason Public Library has a wide variety of cookbooks to get me started. Read about a sampling of cookbooks you can find at the library that will inspire your inner chef this season.

Bringing Events to Life
ARTICLE BY NAN PARASKEVOPOULOS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
MANOR HOUSE IN MASON FOCUSES ON THE DETAILS SO GUESTS CAN ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE.
Nestled amidst sixteen acres of lush lawns and beautiful gardens sits Mason’s Manor House Event Center. While they are known for hosting weddings, Manor House is a versatile, in-demand full-service event center. Their more than 400 events last year included corporate meetings, fundraisers and galas, weddings and wedding showers, birthday and anniversary parties, baby showers and holiday parties.
Owners Janet and David Nelson pride themselves on creating a complete experience so guests can relax and enjoy their events. Unlike other venues which simply charge a rental fee leaving everything else up to the customer, Manor House provides food, tables, linens, chairs, flatware, audio visuals, set up and clean up.
“The key to creating a successful event is in the details. We make sure when we meet with a client we go through a timeline, and every detail of what they may need,” says Janet.
Manor House has several popular packages for birthday parties to help guests navigate the process with ease and bring their desired party themes to life. Brunch is an especially popular choice for baby and wedding showers, as is their atrium.
At the heart of the Manor House Event Center's offerings lies its in-house catering, spearheaded by two accomplished executive chefs, Nick Bullock and Matt Danis. Both chefs have been with Manor House for about 12 years, and seamlessly blend innovation with tradition to curate exquisite menus that cater to a diverse array of palates and occasions. They can accommodate guests with dietary
restrictions such as those who are vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free.
“It is not typical event food,” says Janet. “Our stuffed chicken breast is fabulous, and I love the short rib. We have a lot of great options.”
Manor House has a close relationship with Mason’s South Asian communities and hosted about 30 South Asian weddings last year. Many culturally-specific weddings entail planning that other venues may not have specialty knowledge of, so Manor House makes it a point to train their staff on South Asian wedding traditions. While most events at Manor House are catered by their kitchen, outside caterers are welcome for cultural events.
“Every wedding brings you joy. But probably the most satisfying are the fundraisers we host. Seeing them raise money for a cause is gratifying,” says Janet.
A vast range of organizations trust Manor House with their fundraising events. They recently hosted the melanoma education foundation Melaknowmore, which had a Jamaicanthemed party complete with a Reggae band. The faith-based poverty impact group Joshua’s Place is scheduled to have their event in November. And the prestigious Anthony Muñoz Foundation has partnered with Manor House for years, with themes like 70s Disco, Safari Night and Camp Muñoz.
For more intimate events, their Carriage House has more of a lodge feel with hardwood floors, open-beam ceilings and multiple levels. The smaller building is an excellent option for corporate retreats and lunches, providing an ambiance that fosters connections and productive conversations. For most business events, guests choose a menu with snacks and beverages that will keep the conversation high energy. For audio visual needs, Prestige Audio has a representative who works exclusively with Manor House.
“The Carriage House is becoming more popular all the time,” says David.
Whether under the vast sky, the chandeliers of a ballroom or within the rustic embrace of the Carriage House, the Manor House Event Center is a testament to the art of celebration. From weddings that bind two souls to themed galas that transport guests to different eras, this versatile space continues to create a great venue for events to shine. ManorHouseOhio.com

sweet mold COMPANY BREAKS THE
Whether you're seeking the perfect centerpiece for a special occasion or simply craving a classic treat to brighten your day, Nothing Bundt Cakes in Mason and Liberty Township offers a slice of indulgence that's hard to resist.
Mary Thress was introduced to her business partner Carey Greiner for what was supposed to be a simple 20-minute meet and greet but immediately fell in love with the idea. Before they knew it their first franchise location was born in 2016.
“Two women started the company out of their kitchens in 1996, and most of the franchises are owned by women today,” says Mary.
Nothing Bundt Cakes has 11 regular flavors that come in multiple sizes: full-sized Bundt cakes, single-serving Bundlets and one dozen packs of party-sized Bundtinis. Of the thousands of cakes that have been sold, twenty-five thousand Bundlets and more than fifty thousand Bundtinis, Mary states that the most popular is the decadent Chocolate Chocolate Chip, closely followed by White Chocolate Raspberry.
Each cake is baked to perfection and adorned with the bakery's signature butter cream cheese frosting, prepared in-house daily. Their popular Carrot Cake can be served dairy-free by omitting the frosting, and they even have a gluten-free Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake. The bakery offers seasonal flavors as well. In the autumn, they offer a Pumpkin Spice Cake and for winter, they have Peppermint Chocolate Chip.
TWO LOCAL WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS ARE HELPING REDEFINE AN AMERICAN CLASSIC CAKE.
“I recommend preordering for holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas because we do get very busy. We will always have cakes if people are walking in to buy, but flavors will be limited. People can order online or call the bakery if they have any questions,” says Mary.
While the bakery's name emphasizes the Bundt cakes themselves, it offers more than desserts. Customers can explore such items as Bundtlet towers, gifts and personalized decorations for various occasions such as birthdays, sporting events and celebrations.
“We have a lot of cute things in our Bundt’ique,” shares Mary.
Bundt Cakes are relatively new to America. They were inspired by a European cake that dates back to the 15th century - the ‘gugelhupf’ - which unlike the Bundt is leavened with yeast and contains fruit. In the 17th century, it became a favorite of Marie Antoinette but didn’t come into popularity in America until the 1960s when Ella Rita Helfrich won second place in the Pillsbury Bake-Off with her Tunnel of Fudge.
Ella’s overnight sensation became synonymous with America. In the 2002 comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding, a Bundt cake humorously demonstrates the difference between a family from America and a family from Greece. The Greek matriarch happily exclaims “It’s a cake!” and displays it as a centerpiece, showing the integration of the two families.
From the history of the Bundt cake to the modern interpretations offered by the bakery, every bite from Nothing Bundt Cakes in Mason and Liberty tells a story of craftsmanship and passion. Sweetness takes center stage, reminding us that sometimes, a simple slice of cake can be the gateway to connection. NothingBundtCakes.com
FUN FACTS:
• The first American Bundt pan was invented by the company Nordic Ware, but sales only took off after the Tunnel of Fudge cake won the Pillsbury Bake-Off in 1966.
• National Bundt Cake Day is celebrated on November 15.
• Nothing Bundt Cakes eClub members receive free Bundlet coupons for their birthdays!
• Nothing Bundt Cakes franchise locations can be found in more than 40 states and Canada, spreading the joy of Bundt cakes far and wide.

Salad for Dinner: Complete Meals for All Seasons
By Jeanne Kelley
A salad can almost become a piece of art with its contrasting colors, textures and flavors. A well-prepared salad can serve as an appealing side dish as well as a healthy main dish. “This book is a favorite. The beautiful, fresh flavors and ingredients inspire you to eat more vegetables,” Mary shares. The opening chapter includes a primer on types of greens, washing and storing them and also discusses salad pantry ingredients. Several chapters help you think about dinner differently by including full-meal salad recipes. There are vegetarian salads as well as super-hearty salads that include a variety of seafood, meats and poultry. Intriguing dishes such as an Indonesian chicken salad with pineapple slaw and a Korean barbecue beef salad are imaginative and filling. The author has also released a newer single-subject vegetarian sequel with more recipes for salad as a main course meal. Surprise your family tonight with a healthy, colorful and delicious salad as a complete meal.

THE FLAVOR OF FALL
ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONESApples are the trademark fruit of fall, and with the many varieties to choose from, there is an apple that is sure to please any palate. They can be included in both sweet and savory dishes and are delicious and incredibly healthful. We all have heard the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” While they aren’t a cure-all, apples are packed full of polyphenols, antioxidants, vitamin C, B vitamins and fiber. Make the most of autumn’s best produce and the flavors of fall with this simple recipe.
APPLE GALETTE WITH CARAMEL DRIZZLE
Easier than pie but with all the same textures, this gooey warm dessert is sure to please. For simplicity, this can be made with a premade crust.
INGREDIENTS:
Crust:
• 1 1/2 cups flour
• 1/4 cup sugar
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1 stick cold unsalted butter, cubed
• 1/4 cup iced cold water
Filling:
• 2 apples, peeled and sliced into thin slices
• 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
• 1 1/2 tablespoons flour
• 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
• Caramel sauce
• Optional: 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
INSTRUCTIONS:
Crust:
(Note: If running short on time, store bought crust works great, too.)
Mix flour, salt and sugar together in a bowl. Cut in the butter. Add water and mix until moistened. Lightly knead the dough and then form into a ball. Next, flatten dough into a thick circular form and refrigerate for one hour.
Filling: Mix the apples, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar together in a bowl.
Assemble and Bake: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll the dough into a circle and set on parchment paper. Arrange apples in center of dough, leaving about one inch of space for the edges. Fold crust over the apples and press to seal edges. Drizzle with caramel sauce and sprinkle with pecans or walnuts. Bake for 35 minutes. Serve with caramel sauce and ice cream.
