I am grateful for growing up in a school district that provided many opportunities for students with different interests and passions to get hands-on experience. For me in high school, it was the journalism program at Lakota East that planted the seed for my future career in magazines. It was also where I explored my interest in music through choir and theater. From competing locally for the Mason High School (MHS) Chess Team to being ranked internationally, MHS student Jason Wang certainly has had his share of hands-on experience. Learn more about how Ohio’s topranked chess player has maintained his love and enjoyment of the game while achieving incredible success at such a young age. Learning doesn’t stop at the classroom and Brianna King, registered dietitian for Warren County Health District, knows there is knowledge to be gained in the kitchen. Take a look at how you can engage with children through cooking and try out a few recipes with your kids at home. Shout out to our adorable model for the story, Penny, who is the daughter of our editor. As the school year begins, it’s important to make sure students start the year off well prepared. For many years, Dr. Synder of Mason Eye Center has been helping people, young and old, build their confidence by seeing clearly. He shares answers to many frequently asked questions as well as his tips for healthy eyes. We didn’t forget our furry friends. Our Giving Back story spotlights Xeniabased nonprofit 4 Paws for Ability. Read about how they are helping people with disabilities, including one Mason family, one service dog at a time. We hope your summer has been filled with sun, fun, and memories. Our team is wishing good luck to all students as the new school year begins. Please enjoy the Kids + Pets issue of Mason + Deerfield Lifestyle.

HELPING KIDS SEE DR. TED SNYDER’S MASON EYE CENTER PROVIDES COMPASSIONATE CARE TO PEOPLE OF ALL AGES. ARTICLE BY JONATHAN STOUT | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED When scheduling annual doctor’s visits for children, it’s essential to include a trip to the eye doctor. Regular eye exams are especially important for kids because they don’t always vocalize their vision issues. The eye doctor will be able to inform you if your child needs glasses or is susceptible to different eye diseases. Mason Eye Center strives to make visits to their office as comfortable as possible to patients of all ages, but maintains a genuine focus on children. “I enjoy interacting with kids,” Dr. Ted Snyder tells us. “Not all doctors like interacting with kids, and not all are experienced with it.” Dr. Snyder has a long-standing interest in working with children and has also delivered eye care to individuals in underdeveloped areas all over the world. After receiving his Doctorate
of Optometry from the Ohio State University, he proceeded to purchase Mason Eye Center in 2009. For Dr. Snyder, eye care has been a nearly lifelong passion. “When I was a sophomore in high school I would go to the career room in our library and take self tests to determine what my interests and skills were,” Dr. Snyder explains. “Once I read about optometry, I made my decision.” In addition to the empathetic treatment of children, Mason Eye Center also offers services not all optometrists do. “My love of a test called retinoscopy sets us apart,” Dr. Snyder tells us. “This is how we determine if a child has nearsightedness or farsightedness or astigmatism and if they need glasses. While all optometrists learn this skill in school, not all practice it or like it.”
HOW HAVE YOU ADAPTED EYE EXAMS TO SPECIFICALLY APPEAL TO CHILDREN? “I’m proud of the ability we have at Mason Eye Center to incorporate cartoons into the eye exam,” Dr. Snyder says. “This gives the child something to focus on to make my job easier and the exam more fun for them.”
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU SCHEDULE VISION EXAMS FOR YOUR CHILD? “I recommend annual eye exams for all children, in fact, for all people,” Dr. Snyder tells us. “This is even if the child has no trouble with their vision.”
WHAT DO EYE DOCTORS LOOK FOR DURING ANNUAL VISION EXAMS?
Tips for Healthy Eyes 1. Drink plenty of water and eat your veggies and fruits.
“I am looking for problems with depth perception and binocularity, visual learning, eye health and whole body health,” Dr. Snyder explains. “Even things like high blood pressure, juvenile arthritis, diabetes and many others can show up during an eye exam.”
2. Get annual eye exams. 3. Wear sunglasses.
WHAT ARE SOME SIGNS YOUR CHILD MAY HAVE VISION ISSUES? “It’s hard for parents or even teachers to notice eye issues because they are seeing the child every day,” says Dr. Snyder. “Scheduling annual exams with an optometrist that specializes in pediatrics is the best thing parents can do. However, eye rubbing, excessive blinking, watering, redness, eye turns, closing one eye, holding their head funny, and naming the wrong color are all symptoms that parents can watch for.”

Learn why simplicity and creativity are key ingredients for cooking with kids. ARTICLE BY JILL CLARK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CATHY LYONS—LYONS PHOTOGRAPHY Some families cook with their kids often, but for others, just thinking about it is overwhelming. If it’s not something you’re used to or you could use some fresh ideas, we have good news. With expert advice on how to keep things fun and easy, you’ll find cooking with kids can be a positive experience and help them to make better choices. As a Registered Dietitian for Warren County Combined Health District, Brianna (Bri) King helps people of all ages, educating them on nutrition and advocating for healthier choices and lifestyles. She not only advises vulnerable families in the county, she
takes her nutrition counseling on the road—everywhere from school health classes to senior centers, teaching people in the community about nutrition. Part of her job is working directly with kids, so she has plenty of ideas for getting your kids in the kitchen and even shares some kid-friendly recipes. Bri believes in keeping things as simple as possible, especially for families who are already overwhelmed, stressed, or always in a rush. Even if they only help with one thing, Bri encourages parents to start when their kids are young. “Let your kids do some stirring, even when they’re too young to do much in the kitchen. Then when they’re CONTINUED > AUGUST 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/MASON A N D D E E R F I E L D

ready for more, anything that involves using their hands is great. Sometimes it can be messy and gooey, but kids love it—that's part of the fun,” says Bri. Cooking is not only fun for kids, it’s educational and can lead to an all-around healthier lifestyle. They’re more likely to try foods they helped make, and as a bonus, it’s a good time to talk and bond with your kids as you work on creating something together. Bri points out how much there is to learn in the kitchen when you cook with your kids: “Take the time to talk about what you’re making, there's a lot of science involved. While cooking, and especially baking, they begin to understand how ingredients all come together to create the right consistency. And of course math comes into play too—it’s a great opportunity to learn how to do basic measurements.” Getting kids involved at the grocery store is beneficial too. Bri suggests working on building better shopping habits and teaching your kids where the healthy foods are. Her own grocery store strategy focuses heavily on produce and protein. “I start shopping in the produce section, getting plenty of color and variety. I work my way to the proteins next, building and planning everything else around what I'm buying in those two sections,” she says. “Another good habit is skipping the snack food and sugary drink aisles.” If you’d like to learn more about Warren County Combined Health District or invite Bri to your school or organization to talk about nutrition and exercise, visit WarrenCHD.com. Ready to cook with your kids? Choose something easy or try something a little more challenging. As long as they’re in the kitchen helping and learning, that’s the whole point. Check out the recipes Bri shares to get started!

MASON HIGH SCHOOL CHESS TEAM MEMBER JASON WANG RANKS FIRST IN THE STATE.
26
O UR TOWN | ED U CATION
Enjoyment with a Purpose JASON WANG Mason High School junior Jason Wang began playing chess at the tender age of five. Though he would eventually become internationally recognized for his talents at the game, it began simply as a pleasant way to pass the time. “At the time it was just a regular hobby, a weekly pastime where I would meet with other young players and learn about chess,” Jason explains. Jason participated in a weekly class where he learned about the strategy and subtleties of the game. It didn’t take long before he caught the attention of Mason High School Chess Coach, Keith Brackenridge, at U.S. Chess Federation tournaments. He was recruited to join the high school team when he was in 8th grade. Jason’s skill set has been very useful in training with his teammates. “At early-season practices, I had individual players compete against him and get feedback on their play, and I encouraged them to bring in their own prior tournament games for him to provide feedback,” shares Keith. Jason played his first rated chess tournament, Knights of North Kentucky, in 2013, where he achieved a perfect 5/5 score and an initial chess rating of 1462, which was remarkable considering that most young players start with a rating of approximately 600. Feeling motivated by his success, Jason and his parents then decided to develop his skills to become a top player in Cincinnati.
Titles within international competitive chess playing are all difficult to achieve. The rankings include: Candidate Master (international chess rating of 2200), International Chess Federation (FIDE) Master (rating of 2300), International Master (rating of 2400), and the most coveted of all, Grandmaster (rating of 2500). Jason was rated first in the state of Ohio by the United States Chess Federation starting in 2019 and is currently at the FIDE Master level. His success has also been meaningful for his father, Shanwu Wang, who has traveled with him to many chess tournaments over the last decade. “The happy bonding times that we’ve had are something that I’ll never forget,” Shanwu tells us. “I’ve also learned a lot about parenting while we overcame some tough moments together.” The biggest lesson that Jason has learned from his time playing chess is to not lose focus, even when you are winning. “Countless times I have experienced situations in my chess games where I was winning. Yet I learned that the moment I let go of my focus, something happens—I miss an unexpected riposte or something obvious, and I lose my advantage.” In his spare time, Jason enjoys singing, playing soccer, and juggling. He’s also very active representing Mason in various math contests and teaches chess at a local Chinese school.

“I’ve realized that some students are afraid to play because they’re afraid of losing,” Jason explains. “I tell them that in order to get better, you have to get out of your comfort zone. You have to be willing to lose some games, but when that happens you have to have the spirit to fight back.” Although Jason is a dedicated player that takes the game seriously, he stresses that the enjoyment he gets from playing is ultimately what’s most important to him. “Chess is, after all, a game that is meant to be enjoyed,” Jason remarks. “Just enjoy it with some purpose and I assure you that your chess journey will be a memorable and meaningful experience.” MasonOhioSchools.com

When Kelly Camm discovered 4 Paws for Ability, she fell in love with it immediately. “I couldn’t get 4 Paws out of my mind,” she says. “Now I’ve been development director for 12 years. I love how we change lives in significant ways here.” Service dogs are born and trained at 4 Paws for Ability, a nonprofit based in Xenia, Ohio. Dogs are specifically raised and “made to order” for each disabled child, adult or veteran. Mason and Deerfield Township readers may have even heard of 4 Paws before, as some of their service dogs were featured in a Netflix special called Dogs in Season 1, Episode 1. While the dogs act as companions like ordinary dogs, they do much more. The pups can help mitigate disabilities. 4 Paws has dogs
that specialize in 11 disability areas. Some of the most common are autism and seizure dogs. “Our service dogs do wonderful things for kids with disabilities. They can stop meltdowns for children or track them if they get lost. The dogs can also medically alert a seizure onset,” explains Kelly. Mason resident Nicki Paxton, mom to Malia and service dog Google shares about 4 Paws, “Malia has gained confidence from Google that she didn't have before. 4 Paws did an incredible job selecting and training Google to work specifically for Malia's needs. He can support her with mobility, stability, hearing alerts, and behavior disruptions. He calms her. He is part of our family!” One of the best ways to help support the life-changing work 4 Paws does is to become a volunteer trainer, which you can do from your home! 4 Paws is in need of more amazing volunteer trainers (VT) for their service dogs in training (SDiT). Some of the 4 Paws volunteer roles include:
Kelly Camm, Development Director, 4 Paws for Ability
If you’re looking for additional ways to help 4 Paws for Ability assist people with disabilities, you can donate through their website, 4PawsforAbility.org. They are also holding a Dueling for Dogs fundraising event on August 13. Check Facebook for more information: Facebook.com. To learn more about 4 Paws for Ability, visit 4PawsforAbility.org or contact Kelly Camm at 859-802-0122.
4 PAWS FOR ABILIT Y
• Puppy Starters take in eight week old puppies until they are fully vaccinated at 16 weeks and can then be paired with full time VTs. • Full-time VTs are paired with a SDiT of whatever age they prefer or is available, and care for them throughout their journey of becoming a service dog. • Weekday/Weekend VTs provide a relaxing break for the dogs who are working with their trainers Monday through Friday in advanced training.
