This time of year seems to offer endless activities to experience. Adventure Crew helps city teens engage with the outdoors. The seeds for Adventure Crew were planted in 2012 when teachers at Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) asked the question: what would happen if we took students on an outdoor adventure? This notion was put to the test shortly after when a small group of local teens and teachers from Hughes High School decided to canoe down the Little Miami River for a five-mile float. It ended up having a long-lasting positive and profound effect on the students. This led to the Adventure Crew, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, being officially founded in 2013. The organization is dedicated to connecting city teens in Greater Cincinnati with nature by engaging in outdoor adventures. Adventure Crew now has free programs in 25 city schools within CPS and Northern Kentucky with a roster of nearly 900 teens in grades 6-12. Each month, members take part in a different adventure activity. These include hiking, camping, skiing, biking, kayaking, zip lining and more. “Our adventure locations often change from year-to-year in order to expose our Crew to different outdoor recreational areas and keep things fresh and appealing,” Executive Director, Kirsten MacDougal explains. Kirsten shared some of Adventure Crew’s favorite community events and teen outings that take place throughout the year. To get involved and learn more, visit AdventureCrew.org.

Kayaking the National Wild and Scenic Little Miami River

A 900-meter open water swim across the Ohio River and back. Participants in the Great Ohio River Swim include everyone from competitive athletes to recreational swimmers and more! The river is closed to all motorized traffic during the swim. The Coast Guard and local law enforcement provide on-water safety for the event. In addition, paddlers in kayaks are dispersed throughout the course for support.

The Crew Pathways Program consists of smaller groups of teens from different levels of adventure challenges, outdoor education and green career experiences taking part in a unique adventure together. This summer marks the second year of the Crew Pathways Program and will be celebrated with a week-long camping and canoeing trip for Core Crew members in the Boundary Waters between Canada and the U.S.

“This is an extremely popular annual adventure, and truly a rite of passage for our new Crew members every September,” Kirsten explains. “Most of our city’s teens have never even seen this river, much less paddled down it. Yet with the guidance of our outdoor staff and encouragement from their teachers and friends, they overcome their fears and in just one day their confidence grows by leaps and bounds.”

“Every December we skate at different rinks, but by far the most popular skating destination was the year we took hundreds of Crew members to WinterFest at Kings Island in Mason,” Kirsten tells us.

The nation's largest paddling celebration with 2,000 participants traveling up to nine miles through downtown Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky in canoes, kayaks and other human-powered craft. The proceeds from this Adventure Crew program go to help fund future crew adventures.

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company (CSC) brings Shakespeare and the classics to life in the Otto M. Budig Theater, but each summer they delight audiences around the area with their annual park tour. The free Shakespeare in the Park performances have become tradition, allowing more than 10,000 patrons to enjoy plays in 40+ parks in the tri-state area. The park settings provide a unique experience with the plays reminiscent of the original open-air theater performances. The 2022 production is an 80-minute creative adaptation of Shakespeare’s wild and witty rom-com, Twelfth Night. Audiences are in for an enjoyable evening as a cast of eight unforgettable characters on the coast of Illyria navigate mistaken identities, misunderstandings, and love triangles. It’s a heartfelt story where everyone loves someone—but the right person doesn’t love them back. The play features physical comedy, wordplay, a wisecracking fool, and cross-dressing silliness. To quote the play itself, “why, this is very midsummer madness."

B ACK STAGE | A RTS + CULTURE

For the cast and crew, creating a memorable and entertaining experience for the audience is serious business. Director and fan favorite Crystian Wiltshire gave a behind-the-scenes look at what leads up to performances. “Preparation for this run has been going on for months between actors, designers, and the director. The actors will rehearse for roughly 30 hours each week, figuring out fights, dances, comedic bits, and the best way to stage the play.” Crystian won’t be the only familiar face on stage. He’s excited about the cast, pointing out, “We have a mix of actors well known to this artistic community who worked for the company in previous years. Some are working with CSC for the first time. We even have actors from out of town who are excited to share their gift with us.” Bringing a production to so many different parks means anything can happen. Crystian seems to welcome the challenges. He mused, “That can be part of the fun. We sometimes start a show with a sparse crowd, and double or triple our

audience by the end of the night when people nearby hear the show and walk over to see what’s going on.” Crystian is also looking forward to unveiling the fresh look and feel of this year’s park performances with upgraded production elements. “Our sound, lighting, and scenic designers get to wow attendees with a set unlike our summer park audiences have ever seen.” The park tour travels all over the area, to cities including Milford, Lebanon, Centerville, and Oxford, to name only a few. CSC will perform in Cottell Park in Deerfield Township on Thursday, July 28 at 7:00 p.m. as part of the Arts Alliance summer Performing Arts Series.
