June 2022 PUBLISHER

Mark Andrea | mark.andrea@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Amanda Stout | amanda.stout@citylifestyle.com

After celebrating women in our May issue, it’s time to showcase several men who are striving to make a lasting impact for people young and old. This issue is packed with stories of family legacy, leadership, and giving back, as well as a few helpful ideas for Father’s Day. Several family-owned businesses are sprinkled throughout Mason. However, few have been around for almost a century and span four generations. Read more about the history of Erbeck Family Dental and why Mason is such a special place to Dr. Steven Erbeck, the latest to lead the family business. Many of life’s successes are due to hard work, taking chances, and dreaming big. This is true across businesses, communities, and especially with personal growth. We sat down with Bill McBrayer (President of Fairborn Equipment Company and Founder of McBrayer Legacy Spirits), R. Mukund (CEO & founder of Benchmark Digital Partners, LLC), and Ian Orr (Mason City Schools Board of Education Member), to learn more about their effective leadership and secrets to success. Do you remember the freedom of riding your first bike? Now imagine giving more than 500 children this sense of joy and freedom. Local RE/ MAX TIME realtor Steven Douglass has done just that. Take a look at how he started giving back to those in need and how you can help put a smile on even more local kids’ faces. Lastly, Father’s Day is a few short weeks away! We’ll help you make the day extra special with grill out recipes perfect for a backyard celebration. Be sure to check out the story on Spiffy for gift ideas from this local company that provides on-demand car care and services right at your home. Join us in celebrating these awesome men and saying Happy Father’s Day to all of the dads in Mason and Deerfield Township!

ERBECK FAMILY DENTAL OFFERS NEARLY 100 YEARS OF DENTAL EXCELLENCE TO THE COMMUNITY.

16

H OM E TOWN H E R O | PR OF E S S I ONAL S E RVI CE S

A HISTORY OF HEALTHY SMILES When searching for a dentist in Mason, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more experienced practice with more local history than Erbeck Family Dental. The first dental practice in Mason, starting in 1926, Erbeck Family Dental has been part of the community for almost 100 years. Today, the dentistry is operated by the father-son duo of Doctors Brad and Steven Erbeck. But it was Dr. Clyde Erbeck who started it all. “At the time, there wasn’t another practicing dentist in Mason until his son, Dr. Gail Erbeck, graduated from Ohio State University’s College of Dentistry in 1959 and opened the current office at 300 Third Avenue, in downtown Mason,” Dr. Steven Erbeck explains. As a result, the Erbecks have seen and been a part of the ever changing cultural fabric of Mason for a long time, growing with the community in exciting ways. “When Clyde Erbeck graduated from Mason High in 1918 there were 18 people in his graduating class. Years later when my father, Brad Erbeck graduated in 1977 there were 160 people. Once I graduated in 2012 there were more than 800 in my graduating class,” Steven tells us. Additionally, they’ve grown with the ever-evolving dental industry. Although “Grandpa” Clyde Erbeck was mainly known

for pulling teeth and denture creation, Erbeck Family Dental now uses state-of-theart technology to offer patients the most cutting-edge care possible. “We are grateful for the opportunity to learn the newest technologies and apply them to our practice, improving patient outcomes and providing cutting-edge care,” Steven explains. “Over the years we expanded our scope to provide general dental services. Technological improvements gave us the ability to provide cosmetic procedures such as Invisalign, veneers and teeth whitening.” So why stay in Mason so long? Ultimately, their reason is simple: “Being a 5th generation Mason resident, I can say our family really hasn’t known anywhere else as home,” says Steven. “I think it’s that sense of community and family values that has kept us from considering anywhere else but Mason for our practice. The combination of a fantastic school system, several Fortune 500 companies migrating here and a great community atmosphere seems to be why Mason has been so successful in attracting new families over the years,” he adds. Though many patients are seeking out large dental groups or corporate dental service organizations nowadays, Steven stresses the specialized value that a family practice can offer, “Over the years, we have dedicated ourselves to creating a dental home for our

patients and treating each and every patient like family,” Steven explains. “We truly believe that this patient-driven, family-centered approach is what sets us apart from other dental offices.” Erbeck Family Dental is currently accepting new patients, including children. “Many parents who have brought their children in for cleanings or dental work have mentioned how pleased they are with how kid-friendly our office is,” Steven tells us. “We use many similar approaches of pediatric dental offices including the tell, show, do method, sticker and prize rewards and sibling modeling.” If you’re interested in setting up an appointment for a cleaning or a check-up, please call 513.398.7051 or email them at erbeckdental@gmail.com. Steven Douglass wasn’t searching for a way to give back to his community four years ago, but the 500+ kids he’s helped, their parents, and Steven himself are grateful that the opportunity found him. In 2018, Steven’s brother mentioned that a few kids in his Columbus, Ohio neighborhood were in need of bikes. As luck would have it, Steven soon found enough bikes in good condition that were being thrown out to meet the need in his brother’s community.

Steven’s retrieval and delivery of those first three bicycles was a simple response to hearing a need and finding a way to fill it. He didn’t yet realize that was going to lead to a larger, ongoing effort. Inspired by the happiness he was able to deliver by being resourceful, the Mason native wondered if he could help more kids. Shortly after his first success at finding unwanted bikes, Steven recalls, “I posted on Facebook to see if I could come up with some bike donations for the tri-state area. I got 27 donations from that post, so I just kept going—it took off from there.” Steven clearly appreciates the joy of giving back, and he gets to see the surprised smiles of bike recipients in photos shared with him. “The excitement this brings to kids is incredibly rewarding. It’s worth it,” he says. Four years into his bicycle recycling program, Steven has now given out more than 500 bikes to families, delivering the joy of riding to kids along the way. With limited storage space and most of his time spent selling houses as a RE/MAX agent in Maineville, he still does all of the collecting and distributing himself. He also repairs many of the donated bikes, a skill he learned riding BMX in his youth. Steven has gotten a few boosts along the way to promote his efforts. Powder Keg Harley Davidson heard about his program, and with their social media reach, has offered their support to increase donations. He also partners with Bicycle Recycle, a similar nonprofit bike donation program. Steven now does much of his distribution through community centers, churches, and schools to get bikes to kids for summer and to parents (and Santa) for Christmas. Steven mainly collects donations in the two months leading up to Christmas and summer. You can get in touch with Steven any time at 513-225-5090 to arrange a donation pickup or take them to his office in Maineville at 7264 Columbia Rd., Ste 200. Know someone who needs a bike? Feel free to call or message him at Facebook.com/StevenDouglassREMAXTime.

LOCAL MEN TAKE THE LEAP INTO PASSION PROJECTS, BUSINESS GROWTH AND COMMUNITY SERVICE.

Leadership skills can be forged through so many different circumstances and life experiences. These three local gentlemen, R. Mukund, Ian Orr and Bill McBrayer, have each embarked on their own long-term commitments to personal excellence. Each journey prepared them for the moment when a passion project, company stewardship, or an elected role became an opportunity to step up to lead and inspire others. From each story, we learn how an individual’s path can lead to success for themselves and create new opportunities for their communities.

Journeys to Leadership

Bill McBrayer

President, Fairborn Equipment Company, Midwest Founder & President, McBrayer Legacy Spirits

Entrepreneurship has been in Bill McBrayer’s daily life for more than 25 years, leading the Fairborn Equipment Company, a supplier of loading dock doors and equipment. In that time, he’s learned that business success isn’t instant: it’s a product of working hard, but also being patient. Bill rediscovered this lesson recently, when he launched McBrayer Legacy Spirits, where they produce a spirit that requires years of patience to age fully: bourbon. He brought a special family connection to the bourbon business when he started working on his idea nine years ago. His ancestor, Judge William Harrison McBrayer, was one of the most famous bourbon producers in the world in the 1800s. Using a mash bill from a historic letter from “the Judge,” Bill is now working with his father, WG McBrayer III, to create the modern equivalent of that mash bill, bringing new life to a 175-year-old recipe. The first release in 2021 sold out quickly and was met with strong support from the bourbon community. New releases of the two bourbons they produce now, Old McBrayer and W.H. McBrayer, will continue periodically as new batches are ready. “I’m still really excited about it,” says Bill. “There are endless possibilities for what we can do with this company.” Bill has enjoyed building a business that celebrates his family’s roots and history, all while living in Mason and appreciating everything this great community has to offer his family. If you’d like to hear about new bourbon releases, Bill encourages you to join their free Legacy Club email through their website, McBrayerLegacySpirits.com. R. Mukund CEO & Founder, Benchmark Digital Partners, LLC

R. Mukund understands, because of extensive education and experience, that a company’s environmental, safety, and compliance commitments are only as good as the company’s ability to measure, track, and respond to the data. His own journey in environmental engineering led him to a position at General Electric (GE) where he sought feedback from internal stakeholders who ultimately needed a software solution that was versatile enough for different divisions to track and respond to key information about environment, safety, and other compliance needs, all from an easy-to-use dashboard system. The result was a robust software product that was so well-received within GE that it became a new, separate company with Mukund at the helm. Founded as Gensuite® and now re-branded to Benchmark ESG®, the business continues to grow and find customers all over the world for its cloudhosted, SaaS platform supporting operational compliance programs and now ESG data management. “We got feedback from a user who said that since he’d started using our platform, he’d never been more organized in his life,” Mukund says. “We want companies to be able to operate sustainably

26

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

and responsibly, but also to be able to tell their story with confidence using our platform.” Currently, 350 companies (and counting) rely on the software solution that Mukund and his team developed. They adapt the software frequently. For instance, when COVID-19 emerged, the team created tracking and measurement information within their software suite that helped companies monitor and manage COVID-19 risks and make the challenging decisions that arose in order to keep their employees and customers safe. Mukund joined the Mason Deerfield Chamber after Benchmark (Gensuite) opened their home office in the area. He was impressed with the warm welcome they received and the opportunities for collaboration and mutual support of the business community. “The Mason Deerfield Chamber has done a great job setting itself up to expand, with a huge variety of businesses it can support,” he says. “The attitude is ‘come join, let’s build something together, and that matches what we invite our subscribers to do as well!’” BenchmarkDigitalESG.com

In 2021, Ian Orr became the first person of color elected to the Mason City Schools Board of Education. “I hope to be a trailblazer, the first but not the last or the only,” says Ian. “I’m just really grateful to be able to represent my community in this way.” As an insurance professional, he sees what it takes to incorporate many perspectives into a decision and bring people together to implement a solution. He’s a person who always pays attention to the numbers and data, a trait he brings to his work for the district. Ian also brings plenty of personal experience and a vested interest in the success of Mason’s schools, with his own four children coming up through the district, two of whom are currently enrolled. He ran a campaign in 2019 that was not successful, but the friendships and support created during that campaign came to fruition two years later. He persevered and was elected to office in 2021. He credits his wife and children as major supporters throughout both campaigns. In this role, he’s an advocate for students, staff members, and community members, but he also encourages those around him to speak up and see change happen for themselves. “I see my secret weapon as listening, and I can advocate on your behalf, or I can give you a platform and a space to speak for yourself,” Ian says. “The most rewarding and fulfilling part has been to see people trust me with their stories.” Ian sees Mason as a unique and special place to live, work, and get an education, and he wants to be part of Mason achieving its full potential. “I love how we come together in this community,” says Ian. “We struggle, we succeed, and we celebrate together. It feels like you really know everyone here.” MasonOhioSchools.com

ON-DEMAND CAR CARE COMPANY BRINGS SERVICE TO YOU

We’re living in an age of convenience and time-saving strategies: most of us could use an extra hour here and there, and we love the ability to line up the next thing we need right on our cell phones. These factors were part of why Bethany and Brian Hinson realized back in 2018 that they’d love to introduce an on-demand car care company to fellow Cincinnatians. Booking an appointment for car services to come to you is the premise of Spiffy, a company that sends a van capable of handling car wash and detail, oil changes and tire replacement right to your door. “In early 2021, we found out Spiffy had launched franchising, and we were so excited to bring this to Cincinnati in July 2021,” says Bethany, co-owner of Spiffy in Cincinnati. There are three ways to schedule your Spiffy: the website, phone or a convenient app. Then, Spiffy comes to you with the

power and water—all they need are your keys. The Spiffy Customer Care team makes sure that they have a van available in your area, confirming your appointment ahead of time. In addition to residential appointments, Spiffy offers fleet management where they service fleets for a variety of services from oil changes to washes and detailing. Lastly, Spiffy offers business-to-business partnerships with wash events and employee discounted rates. The return to in-office work presents an excellent opportunity to show your employees you value them by giving back time, our most precious asset, and a “Spiffy Clean” vehicle. It’s easy and a real perk for employees heading back to the office. Spiffy didn’t stop at providing convenience; they’ve aimed for the highest possible level of sustainability in their initiatives. “As a green, certified-carbon-neutral company, we reclaim 100% of the water and supplies we use with a proprietary wash mat, and we recycle about 50,000 gallons of oil a month across the entire Spiffy company,” says Bethany. “I’m really proud of it, since you don’t always think of the car care industry as eco-conscious, but that’s the lens we look through.” Check out the Spiffy app and explore options for on-demand car care at GetSpiffy.com.

WHAT KEEPS SPIFFY CUSTOMERS COMING BACK? • Consistent Quality—Technicians work through a step-by-step process to deliver the same consistency in the details every time. • Quick and Easy Time Commitment—Spend two minutes on the app versus an hour or more to go elsewhere for car services.

Father’s Day GRIL L OU T

CELEBRATE THE GREAT DADS IN YOUR LIFE WITH GRILL OUT RECIPES THAT WILL IMPRESS ANY BBQ MASTER.

Father’s Day often marks the kick-off of summer and time for grill outs with family and friends. To help celebrate the dads in our lives and welcome the grilling season, we asked Lauren Lane Culinarian to share some of her favorite summer entertaining recipes. So commandeer the grill for the day and give Dad a seat of honor to enjoy this fresh summer feast.

HUMMUS WITH TOPPINGS Serves 6-8

INGREDIENTS • Your favorite store-bought hummus, or make one of Lauren’s favorites: Lauren-Lane.com Topping options: • 1 small zucchini or a few radishes, thinly sliced • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, quartered • 1 handful watercress or microgreens Additional topping ideas: • fresh basil • crumbled feta cheese • 1/2 cup toasted pine nuts or capers

DIRECTIONS 1. Spoon the hummus into a serving bowl. Using your spoon, make a few swirls on the top. 2. In a medium bowl, toss toppings together. Add a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of salt and pepper. Toss well to combine. 3. Drizzle hummus with olive oil and top with the dressed toppings. Serve with pita chips and/or crisp veggies for dipping.

GRILLED CORN SAL AD Serves 4-6

INGREDIENTS • 2 ears corn, grilled and cut from the cob • 1 small shallot, thinly sliced into rings • 1/4 cup fresh feta or goat cheese, crumbled • 3 sprigs basil, leaves removed and torn • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar • Black pepper, to taste • Jalapeño, thinly sliced (optional)

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the grill to medium-high. Place husked or unhusked corn on the grill and cook for about 10-15 minutes, turning often, until charred. Let cool before scraping kernels from the cob. (Tip: If you don’t plan to husk the corn before grilling, soak the ears in the husk in water for better moisture retention and to reduce fire risk.) 2. Place grilled corn kernels into a bowl with the rest of the ingredients and stir to combine. 3. Taste, and re-season with salt, pepper, and vinegar to taste.
