When we first started the Readers’ Choice Awards three years ago, we didn’t know what to expect. We were impressed with the more than 800 unique voters who helped us select the winners for the 2018 awards. But this year, you all have truly outdone yourselves! After nearly 4,200 unique voters submitted ballots, we are excited to announce the 2021 Readers’ Choice Awards winners. Head over to page 28 to see the 50+ winners in more than 40 categories from Medical to Home Services and Dining to Retail and so much more! Congratulations to all of this year’s winners and nominees. We would also like to say thank you to the group of students from the Mason High School Principles of Marketing class who helped us create and implement strategies to promote the voting process for the awards. Thanks to Bianca, Kevin, Aubrey, and Isaac for your work throughout the fall semester! There’s so much to love about the communities of Mason and Deerfield Township and it's our privilege to show the love for all things local in every issue.

One of the leading contributors to dental cavities is sugary drinks. The drink pyramid is a great reminder to caregivers to limit exposure to sugary/acidic drinks and stick with water as much as possible. Doing Good With Every Cup Learn how Rooted Grounds Coffee Company blends philanthropy into every bag of beans. ARTICLE BY LAURA M. LEAVITT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CATHY LYONS—LYONS PHOTOGRAPHY

The first sip of coffee in the morning means a lot: it’s part of a waking-up routine, but it’s also a way to connect. Locally-headquartered, Rooted Grounds Coffee Company, began in 2015 with a dream to create fresh, affordable coffee roasts that were rooted in the community. “From the start, we wanted to create coffees that were going to the commercial setting, but tasted like craft coffee-shop coffee,” says Patsy Knopf, co-founder and chief executive officer of Rooted Grounds. Their commitment to giving back began when they partnered with the Bengals and the Marvin

Lewis Community Fund, donating part of their proceeds to support underprivileged students in the Cincinnati area. “Those early experiences formed our foundation. We realized that people like to do business with companies that care,” says Kris Chari, executive vice president at Rooted Grounds. “We’re a for-profit entity, but we believe we can do good in every community we serve.” Having a passion for education, Rooted Grounds has created the Readers Roast as a partnership with the Columbus-based 2nd and 7 Foundation. This organization focuses on providing “free books and positive

role models” to 2nd graders in schools all around the country, fostering a love of reading and access to reading materials. They partner with groups of athletes who read with children, further showing kids the importance of literacy. With some clients, like the various hospital networks that serve Rooted Grounds’ brews, they realized that the business itself had a charitable foundation or an area of passion where they could do good. In their six years of operation, Rooted Grounds has been able to partner with more than a dozen philanthropies, from hospital foundations like the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation to direct aid like Oxford Food Bank. They’ve also partnered with the West Chester Hospital Golf Outing, Mason City Schools, and even national charities like the American Red Cross. This breadth of local outreach extends the feeling of connection to community to everyone involved in businesses that serve Rooted Grounds blends. “Many of the hospital network foundations always have a gala or a golf outing which every employee might not be able to attend, but everyone can drink a cup of coffee,” says Kris. “It became an employee engagement initiative, not just a giveback. EVS workers and 3rd shift x-ray technicians were able to drink the coffee and have an impact on neighbors right there in their community.” In addition to literacy, they see a wider vision of improving communities and supporting them with the proceeds from their lovingly-crafted coffee. They even poured their energy into being a diverse workplace with strong representation at all levels as they pursued and received the highly regarded WBENC certification, as a Women’s Business Enterprise. Rooted Grounds holds themselves to high standards in every arena: they want to offer competitive commercial pricing while delivering a craft-level coffee product and still make giving back a cornerstone of their work. They’ve even visited some of the farms that provide the green coffee beans to them before roasting happens at their facility.

“We use our tasting room to help clients make their own blend. They try coffees from different origins and potential blend mixtures to find the perfect one for them,”

“We have gone to three farmers in Costa Rica, and we got to see how they do it, and how the process went. They really take care of their employees, which was good to know. It’s great that these suppliers actually care!” Patsy shares. Rooted Grounds has also chosen to make the process of purchasing commercial coffee unique and personalized for their clients. “We use our tasting room to help clients make their own blend. They try coffees from different origins and potential blend mixtures to find the perfect one for them,” says Patsy. You can find Rooted Grounds coffee in many places in our community: from the sidelines of local charitable road races, to a cup of Readers Roast at your local UDF. Rooted Grounds is working to grow their impact on local communities while getting excellent cups of coffee into your hands at the same time. RGCoffee.com

LIVE LIKE MAYA FOUNDATION

Lyons & Lyons Law is a West Chesterbased full-service law firm serving Southwest Ohio. Rob Lyons, founder of Lyons & Lyons, opened his law office in West Chester in 1983, and has remained a staple in the community for more than 35 years. Lyons & Lyons Law attorneys are happy to assist their neighbors with virtually all of their legal needs.

Maya Collins was only seven when she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and a chromosomal abnormality that made her cancer harder to treat. For more than six years, she and her family experienced the roller coaster of multiple life-saving bone marrow transplants, chemotherapies, relapses and remissions. On October 3, 2017, Maya received her “angel wings”. Having lived her 14 years as a thoughtful, generous young lady, her legacy would be to make the world a kinder, more loving place. The Live Like Maya Foundation was started and is led by Maya’s parents and Mason residents, Bonnie and Tom Collins. They are committed to funding pediatric cancer research, providing financial assistance to families of children battling cancer and continuing Maya’s legacy of fostering kindness and goodwill within the community. “To live like Maya is to wear a big smile, enjoy life, love dance and art and have a tender, giving heart,” says Bonnie. Some of the organizations they support include the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. The foundation also provides college scholarships to students in the community who have displayed exemplary life skills. To date, the Live Like Maya Foundation has raised more than $250,000 to support pediatric cancer families and life saving pediatric cancer research. In 2021, they contributed a $10K research grant to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, and more than $18K to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Children’s Initiative. Recently, Bonnie and Tom, who are part-owners in Sharonville-based Third Eye Brewing, saw their Higher Purpose Milk Stout, known as Maya’s Beer, win two prestigious awards: the Great American Beer Festival Gold medal in the sweet stout/cream stout category and Gold in the U.S. Open Beer Championship. Each Higher Purpose brew purchased contributes 10% of proceeds to the Live Like Maya Foundation.

ARTICLE BY JONATHAN STOUT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CATHY LYONS—LYONS PHOTOGRAPHY

Katia Zhestkova-owner of Kenai Art Studio

EMPOWERING ART AND CREATION

KENAI ART STUDIO After years of teaching art at pop-up events and organizing public events all over the Cincinnati area, Katia Zhestkova realized that there was a local need for art classes for kids and adults in the area. This led her to open Kenai Art Studio in downtown Mason. We chatted with Katia about the evolution of her art career and the development of her studio.

KENAI ART STUDIO AND AR WORKSHOP OFFER THE COMMUNITY SPECIALIZED ART AND DIY PROJECT INSTRUCTION.

M AK E R’S ST U D IO | A RTS + CULTURE

WHAT IS KENAI ART STUDIO’S GENERAL MISSION AND WHAT KIND OF EVENTS DO YOU HOLD THERE? Our mission is to teach art while giving our students the freedom to be themselves, to innovate, and to be creative, helping them find personal fulfillment while having fun.

Kenai Art Studio offers art classes where we teach basic and advanced painting and drawing skills. We work individually with every student in the class giving them the projects that fit their skill level and individual instructions to help them grow at their own pace. Also, we do a lot of private art events like Paint Night and various fundraising events. WHEN DID YOUR STUDIO OPEN? We opened our business in February of 2020. I guess I couldn’t have picked a worse time to open a business! We still joke about it. But our business survived and we were even able to offer summer art camps. We are now offering several regular art classes and private events. WHAT KINDS OF ART CLASSES DO YOU OFFER? We offer painting, drawing and mixed media classes for kids and private art classes for adults. Each class usually consists of seven to eight students. Our students acquire basic and advanced skills depending on their level of interest. We take students with all skill levels, and we help them develop, grow, and use their imagination. The most important skill we teach is creativity. Our studio is a very positive, judgment-free zone. WHAT MEDIUMS DO YOU WORK WITH? We use acrylic paint, watercolors, mixed media techniques, acrylic inks and drawing with pencils, markers and charcoal. We encourage our students to try various materials.

KENAI ART STUDIO

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT CREATING ART? WHAT ABOUT THAT FEELING DO YOU TRY TO BRING TO YOUR ART CLASSES? I love art because it gives me and my students an ultimate freedom to be ourselves. I regularly observe how my students get more confident as they celebrate their successes. Looking at a beautiful painting they have made, makes them realize they can produce something real and lasting. That gives them a great sense of accomplishment! WHAT DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR THE FUTURE OF KENAI ART STUDIO? We offer our regular art classes, and we will have various workshops for adults. People can always contact us if they are interested in private art events for family and friends or a fundraiser for their church or organization. The registration for our Summer Art Camps will start in March. Ann Puckett, franchise owner of AR Workshop Mason.

AR WORKSHOP MASON AR Workshop was created in 2016 to offer in-person, instructional workshops to help participants create customized home decor items. Everyone leaves with a sense of accomplishment and a finished project they created at every workshop. Projects made at these events include plank wood projects, canvas tote bags, pet beds, blanket ladders, box trays and much more. The Mason AR Workshop franchise was opened in January 2019, and Ann Puckett took ownership in October 2021. We spoke to her about what people can expect from their workshops and projects. WHAT KIND OF PROJECTS DO YOU WORK ON AT AR WORKSHOP? AR Workshop is a do-it-yourself boutique where you can create personalized home decor from raw materials while having a great time with friends and family. WHAT CAN ONE EXPECT FROM YOUR WORKSHOP EXPERIENCES? They can expect an over-the-top DIY experience where we walk them through each step from color selection, techniques and project assembly with power tools. There is no experience required. We have so many people who leave feeling empowered

that they were able to get crafty and out of their comfort zone, all while having a great time with friends and family. Drinks and snacks are welcome. We do several open classes as well as private events to make the DIY experience personal and fun. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE KIND OF PROJECT TO WORK ON OR TEACH? My personal favorite is our Swap ARt! It’s a framed square with a swappable sign placed in the middle that you can change each season. I love the options and the different ways you can “swap out” your design depending on the season to keep your decor fresh. WHAT IS USUALLY INCLUDED IN YOUR DIYTO-GO KITS? Our DIY To-Go Kits contain everything you need to DIY at home - all wood or canvas, paint, stencils, brushes and instructions. It is a fun way to do a project with family at home especially with the winter season upon us. About 80% of our normal project catalog is available for to-go options, so there is always plenty to choose from.

AR WORKSHOP MASON

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT AR WORKSHOP? WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN YOUR OWN FRANCHISE? I love that I get the opportunity to help our customers make personalized decor for their home. Having something created with the colors you want and displaying your family details makes it special. I love teaching others, helping them bring out their inner craftinista and empowering them to use power tools. I wanted to create a place where others could come together to create as well as own my own business again. The AR franchise model worked with my vision, so I jumped in! WHAT DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR THE FUTURE OF YOUR AR WORKSHOP LOCATION? We are planning on expanding our class schedule to include a full array of kids’ educational programs, summer camps, and specialty classes. We’d also like to include more charcuterie, entertaining designs and how-to styling with complementary decor. AR WORKSHOP MASON 113 Reading Rd, Mason 513.229.8088 | ARWorkshop.com/mason
