The 'Three Bills' who founded May We Help.
In 2003, an engineer named Bill Wood met a young woman with cerebral palsy who enjoyed reading, but had to use a pencil in her mouth to turn the pages of her books. Seeking to help, Bill designed a device for her that turned the pages with the push of a button. Meanwhile, factory owner Bill Deimling was creating assistive devices for a family friend with a disability. The friend’s physical therapist introduced the two Bills, and they worked together to fill an unmet need: creating custom, commercial-grade assistive devices for people with disabilities. After meeting a third Bill, engineer Bill Sand, the idea for May We Help was born. Every item that May We Help volunteers create is unique and designed to meet the specific needs of a single individual. “Today, May We Help consists of 75 volunteer engineers, industrial designers, inventors, welders, woodworkers, seamstresses, doctors, and occupational and physical therapists who come together to design, build and deliver custom devices at no cost to hundreds of clients every year,” Executive Director Rob Seiderman tells us. After submitting the online form, May We Help finds the right volunteer or team of volunteers whose skill sets best match the project. After the match is made, a “Discovery Visit” is scheduled, where volunteers learn more about the client and their environments. Volunteers then get to work designing and building the custom device, using May We Help’s state-of-the-art workshop. Once the device is finished, volunteers deliver the completed apparatus and ensure that it works correctly for the client. A labor of love, May We Help’s general sentiment is best summed up by a volunteer, “There’s nothing as satisfying as using my skill set to help others.” May We Help volunteers designed a modified bike for the son of Mason resident, Emily Wei.“Their volunteers are
very kind and patient,” Emily tells us, “We really appreciate all the help they have given us.” May We Help also found a way to give gently-used equipment a new life. “Typically, when we visit the client at their home, we almost always come across adaptive equipment being stored because it’s no longer useful to them,” Rob describes. “The equipment is too expensive to throw away, so it sits collecting dust. Yet, we meet many individuals and families every day who are desperate for that very equipment.” From these observations the Adaptive Equipment Swap was created. “May We Help welcomes donations of clean and functional pediatric and adult equipment,” Rob clarifies. “Then, approximately every 90 days, we hold an Adaptive Equipment Swap, and invite the community to take home any equipment they need – free of charge.” On-site physical therapists are also at these events to provide guidance to ensure individuals and families are matched with the right equipment. Additionally, modification experts provide on-site fittings and adjustments to ensure comfort and capability. In 2022 they hope to branch out from their current location on the eastside of Cincinnati, and provide care for underserved populations via mobile services. The number of people requesting services from May We Help is growing, so volunteers are needed. Most volunteers work in their own workshops or at the May We Help makerspace. Other volunteers help with mailings and meals. Volunteer positions can be applied for on their website. Those in need of services can utilize the “Request a Solution” application on MayWeHelp.org.

“What really attracted Lisa and I to it was that we believe yoga is good for everyone." — Chris Hack, co-owner of YogaSix Mason
Chris Hack, co-owner of YogaSix in Mason, has always lived an active lifestyle, but yoga wasn’t his mainstay. However, when his wife and co-owner Lisa Hack convinced him to try a class, he immediately enjoyed the benefits. “I was a typical male back then, ‘I’m just going to go lift weights, that’s not for me.’ Once I put my guard down and did it, I felt really good!,” shares Chris. “I'm a biker and a weightlifter, and I did HIIT classes and functional training. Adding yoga really helped with tightness and increased my mobility and flexibility.” In 2019 Chris started looking for a new venture after 11 years in the nutrition business. He had spent much of that time surrounded by all things fitness, so when YogaSix was presented to him it felt like a great fit. He and Lisa spent the next six months exploring the business. “What really attracted Lisa and I to it was that we believe yoga is good for everyone. Whether you’re a marathon runner or a couch potato,” explains Chris. YogaSix is a modern take on the ancient practice of yoga that makes it empowering and fulfilling for all abilities and levels of fitness. They offer six core classes, plus one that combines three class types (see next page). All instructors come in with a 200 hour yoga teaching certification and also complete training specific to YogaSix, which in part, teaches language cues and common terms that everyone can understand. Their modernized approach also creates a full sensory experience, which includes not only essential oils and eucalyptus towels for cool down, but also how the whole studio is set up. The studio is bathed in calm lighting with a Bose sound system playing instructor curated music. The top-of-the-line HVAC uses a UV filtration system that clears 99.9% of airborne viruses with a 15-minute program that replenishes the studio with fresh air after each class. Plus, special flooring and a high quality humidifier help create the optimal environment to practice in. “When you’re thinking about a warm room or hot yoga you need a good balance of quality heat and humidity. That plays into the sensory experience,” says Chris. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/MASON A N D D E E R F I E L D

HEALTHY YOU IN 2022 DR. DAVID BERRING OF EVERYBODY’S HEALTH IN MASON DESCRIBES HOW HOLISTIC CHIROPRACTIC SERVICES CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE HEALTH AND WELLNESS. ARTICLE BY KAREN ANDREA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNA BEERS—PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNA
Dr. David Berring DC, chiropractic physician and owner of Everybody’s Health in Mason, always knew he wanted to be a doctor. As a young boy, he saw firsthand how a chiropractor provided relief for his injured grandmother, relief she wasn’t receiving from more traditional medical care. Years later, after interviewing several doctors, he concluded that chiropractors loved their work and decided to be a chiropractor. Describing chiropractic care, Dr. Berring relates, “Chiropractors believe the body can heal itself. Much of medicine has forgotten this over time. We focus so much on symptom treatment and applying drugs to the problem that we forget the body can treat itself if given what it needs, like proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. It’s about achieving wellness and health, not just treating symptoms and sickness.” People are familiar with chiropractic adjustments that treat back and neck ailments. But the goal of chiropractic care is more
holistic. Dr. Berring explains, “There’s a relationship between the spine and the nervous system. When we reduce interferences to the nervous system through spinal realignment, we can achieve favorable health results for many non-spinal conditions.” In addition to chiropractic care, Everybody’s Health offers massage therapy, regenerative medicine, hormone replacement therapy, counseling for fitness, weight loss and nutrition, and health and wellness products and supplements. Their newest service is family and acute care provided by a medical doctor and nurse practitioner. Reflecting on his work and the mission of Everybody’s Health, Dr. Berring shares, “I love seeing people get better and knowing their ability to heal is still there. I like the moments when I am talking to someone about their problem who has tried every medical option possible, and they come here and get the help they need.” EverybodysHealth.com
FAMILY AND ACUTE CARE This new addition to Everybody’s Health services expands their ability to care for the whole body. Dr. Matthew Huff MD and Brook Batey-Heim NP offer more traditional medical and acute care with a commitment to consider all options for wellness, rather than depending primarily on drugs.
REGENERATIVE MEDICINE AND HORMONE REPL ACEMENT Regenerative medicine is a minimally invasive procedure designed to more naturally heal the body by growing new tissue. Aging affects our hormone levels. Replacement therapies help balance and stabilize the levels resulting in a renewed feeling of wellness.
CHIROPRACTIC CARE Chiropractors offer a holistic approach to healthcare. Instead of merely treating symptoms, they seek to identify and correct the cause of a patient’s ailments which provides significant short and long-term benefits.
MA SSAGE THERAPY Licensed Massage Therapists work to improve a patient’s overall health with individually customized techniques that relax, relieve stress, improve circulation and loosen and stretch muscles.
Tips Stay hydrated Drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily to help ward off illnesses from pathogens entering dry cracked skin this time of year.
Increase vitamin D Take at least 5000 units a day. When the sun goes down earlier, we don’t get enough for proper immune function, hormone balance and mood.
Check your spine Only a chiropractic adjustment can ensure your spine is functioning the way it needs to so that your body is working at its peak performance. It's not about pain, it's about function.

the right practice Deerfield Township resident and Mason business owner, Dr. Natalie Stewart, decided as a young adult that dentistry was the right fit for her. “It combined my love of art, caring for people and science,” Natalie explains. “Dentistry allows me to serve others and I’m forever grateful to be in this profession.” Following her graduation from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in 2015, Natalie moved to the area to join her husband, AJ, a lifelong Mason resident who she met through mutual friends during college. While employed at Afinia Dental, Natalie felt prepared to take on dental practice ownership, but wasn't sure she would find the right practice.
“A few months after returning to work from maternity leave I was approached about purchasing Dr. Gregory Davis' office,” Natalie tells us. “I was impressed by the amazing practice Dr. Davis built for 38 years and felt fortunate for the opportunity to step in as he transitions to retirement.” As the new owner of Mason Elite Dentistry, her key specialities include same-day restorative dentistry and sedation dentistry. Mason Elite Dentistry also provides services with some of the most cutting edge technology available. “We utilize 3D radiographs as well as CAD/CAM technology to fabricate beautiful crowns the same day,” Natalie says.

DR. NATALIE STEWART OF MASON ELITE DENTISTRY TO CONTINUE THE TECHNOLOGY-DRIVEN LEGACY OF DR. DAVIS’ LONGTIME MASON PRACTICE.
ARTICLE BY JONATHAN STOUT PHOTOGRAPHY BY APRIL SOVA —REMEMBER WHEN PORTRAITS
“Dentistry allows me to serve others and I’m forever grateful to be in this profession.” —Dr. Natalie Stewart
Natalie stresses the importance of dental health for the overall health of the body. “Teeth and gums are connected to the whole mouth via blood vessels,” Natalie explains. “If you have an abscess, gum inflammation or infection, then bacteria is circulating everywhere.” As for any patients who are hesitant to visit the dentist during a pandemic, Natalie offers a confident assurance: “Our office has air purifiers in each operation room that fully clean the air every 30 minutes in the event of aerosolized bacteria.” In addition to these precautions, the staff of Mason Elite Dentistry also recommend that patients wear masks while in the office unless actively having teeth cleaned or worked on. “Rest assured, everyone in our office exercises all precautions possible,” Natalie affirms. STARTING STRENGTH CINCINNATI BREAKS DOWN THE KEY PARTS OF FITNESS
34
G E T ACT IV E | FITN ESS
STRATEGY FOR STRENGTH When you walk into the local Starting Strength Cincinnati studio, you’ll see nine identical racks and platforms and a couple of screens with plans for the day’s workout. If you’re used to a gym with lots of machines, you might be surprised. However, the coaches, apprentices and owner Luke Schroeder are practitioners of a formula for strength training that works every time, and it’s at the center of their method. “It all began with a book, Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training, by Mark Rippetoe in 2005,” says Luke. “It discusses why strength is the single most important physical adaptation we’ve got, and how it helps us do everything else better in our lives.” The book takes that principle, and develops in deep detail, how a certain set of exercises with the barbell—the squat, deadlift, overhead press, bench press and the power clean— make the body work as a system in a way that builds strength throughout the body, not just in isolated body parts. When Rippetoe’s book gained recognition as the definitive guide of its kind, he and other gym owners began using it as a manual for coaching people who wanted to get stronger. Now, official Starting Strength gyms are
popping up all over the United States, with Starting Strength Cincinnati being the ninth gym of its kind to open. Workouts at Starting Strength are programmed and coached. You start with an introductory session where the credentialed coach teaches you the form and technique of the movements you'll use, while establishing baselines of strength. Coaching sessions are typically three times a week, each session attuned to where you are in your strength journey. Starting Strength is shown to work for all ages, male and female, and you’re likely to see that diversity in any group coaching session. “Strength training is especially important as we age,” says Luke. “A lot of our clients are 65 and older. There’s a 97-year-old woman who trains at Starting Strength Boston. In that age group, with 90 days on our program, the 65+ groups are stronger than the 18-45 age category is on day one.” The Starting Strength coaching credential is the most rigorous in the industry, with studies in human physiology, physics, how to coach the lifts and how to develop the individualized programming. It culminates in challenging final exams that test both knowledge and effective coaching.

In the process of an intensive three times per week workout, friendships form in the gym, driven by the excitement of seeing progress. “It really becomes a community, and while there’s nothing in here that’s dangerous, strength training can be hard. So, there’s a bond that comes with doing things that aren’t easy as a group,” says Luke. The Starting Strength pricing strategy is simple, with a structured rate per session, billed monthly. They avoid cancellation fees, joining fees and contracts because they fully believe their results will keep clients coming back. Starting Strength Cincinnati breaks down the key parts of fitness while building up strength and relationships. Start Strong Every Saturday at 11:30 a.m., Starting Strength Cincinnati hosts an open house to see the gym, meet the staff and observe coaching methods.
