Something you may not know about our publication is that it is a locally-owned and operated franchise under City Lifestyle. Over the past 13 years, the company has grown from a couple of magazines in Kansas City to nearly 140 communities across the country. Mason Community Players Announce Upcoming 50-Year Anniversary Season The Mason Community Players recently celebrated their upcoming 50-year anniversary, as well as the one-year anniversary of their new location in downtown Mason. Bringing Home Their Field of Dreams RAISING MONEY FOR ADAPTIVE BASEBALL FIELDS, THE MASON CHALLENGER LEAGUE ENTERS THEIR FINAL STRETCH. It’s a warm sunny Saturday in late spring, and the young players gather on the field. Today, they’ll swing bats, run bases, field balls, and chat and laugh with their friends in the dugout. Pretty ordinary. Pretty much what thousands of other kids around the country will do that day, and that’s what makes it so extraordinary.

For the last 10 years, the Mason Challenger League has given kids and young adults with physical and developmental disabilities the chance to play baseball. Since it started, the Mason Challenger League has grown from 30 to more than 100 players. It even had 16 players go to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania this past August. Players enjoyed a send-off parade in Mason, with cheering fans lining the streets, a drumline and mascots from the Cincinnati Reds. “It was an amazing experience and a lot of them will never forget it,” says Jen Christmas who serves on the board as the Marketing and Public Relations Director for the Challenger League. It was a dream come true, but the Challenger League has another dream in the works that would extend to all its players. It started in 2019 when the City of Mason approached the league with an idea. “They said we have room here in Makino Park, and we’d like to build two ball fields. Will you sit down with us and tell us what would be your dream?” explains Mason Challenger League Board President Susan Murdock. “They asked, ‘What would make these the ultimate ball fields for your players?’” If the league would help with the fundraising, the city would build its field of dreams. What would be the perfect ball field for the Challenger League’s players? First, it would have synthetic turf instead of grass, so after it rained the field wouldn’t develop divots, which can be a trip hazard. The bases would be painted on the turf, which makes it easier for everyone to move around the field. The dugouts would be extra wide to allow for mobility devices and baseball equipment and have segmented benches, so all the teammates could sit together.

“What also makes the baseball field special is even though they're designed to remove some of the barriers we have faced on typical fields, typical kids can come and play, and they'll just think they're really awesome fields,” Susan shares. “The adaptive ball fields would benefit our child by giving her a chance to play on a field like all kids do,” says Challenger League mom, Dawn Koesters. With about $1.8 million already raised to build the adaptive fields, the league needs about $300,000 more to reach its $2.1 million goal. The City of Mason has already put the project out to bid with the goal to build in 2023. For Melissa Schaedig’s daughter, Hannah, the “countdown to the next week’s game” starts on Sundays. Dedicated adaptive fields could help ensure that players can go out and play the game they look forward to every week in May and June. Jen talks about her 15-year-old son who’s been in the league for seven years, “He plays on a Saturday and goes to school on a Monday. ‘Hey, what did you do over the weekend?’ ‘Oh, I had a baseball game,’—just like everybody else.” Ultimately, that’s the goal of the Challenger League, to give kids and young adults with disabilities the chance to experience the joy of the game just like a typical ballplayer. A Festive Holiday Tradition MASON DANCE CENTER CELEBRATES THEIR 20TH ANNIVERSARY PERFORMING THE NUTCRACKER.

One of the season’s most fabled and beloved shows, The Nutcracker, has also become a Mason holiday tradition performed by dancers from the Mason Dance Center (MDC). This year’s presentation celebrates the 20th anniversary of MDC’s rendition of the classic Tchaikovsky ballet they call The Nutcracker-All Jazzed Up! Bobbi Wyatt, owner and director of MDC explains, “We call it The Nutcracker-All Jazzed Up! because we perform Tchaikovsky’s traditional music along with many different arrangements from sources such as Pentatonix, Glenn Miller and Duke Ellington. The basic storyline is still there, but we keep it interesting and fun by switching the music and including many styles of dance. There’s always something new each year.” CONTINUED >

In 2001, MDC was performing excerpts from The Nutcracker in various venues around town. Bobbi tells us, “While performing outside in terrible weather that year, we decided it was time to move inside. A week later a parent from our dance group asked if we could help support the Mason High School After Prom committee’s efforts and I suggested our Nutcracker performance. Now 20 years later, we have donated around $120,000 to the after-prom event.” Mason Dance Center opened its doors in 1995 under Bobbi’s leadership when her young daughters Emily and Amanda found themselves without a studio nearby to further their dance training. Now Emily serves as MDC’s ballet program director and Amanda is the school director. About 400 students are enrolled during a typical school year in programs including ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, modern, hip-hop, acrobatic and musical theater. MDC also offers a pre-professional ballet program and is active in dance competitions. This year’s performances of The Nutcracker-All Jazzed Up! will be on December 18th at 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. in the Mason High School theater. The show features 109 dancers in groups and solos ages 7-18, mostly from the competition and pre-professional ballet programs, and about 40 ‘extras’ representing dancers ages 3-7.

“We work on the show nearly yearround,” Bobbi notes. “Our teachers along with Amanda and Molly Gilbert, our competition team director, create the choreography and the students work on their performances in their classes from September until the show opens in December.” “One fun thing we do to let the dancers know what part they have, is we put a colorful sign in their yard that says, ‘A Nutcracker cast member lives here.’ Instead of just posting a cast list, they are surprised in a special way that everyone can see,” Bobbi relates. MDC student and Mason High School senior Sienna Mancini shares, “The Nutcracker has always been my favorite show to perform. I've worked my way through the roles. This year I'm honored to perform the lead, the Sugarplum Fairy. The studio functions like a family. I adore talking with young dancers and being a positive role model. Derived from the French “chair cuite,” this tasty trend currently translates into the art of arranging meat, cheese and more. Charcuterie specialists abound, serving up bites on boards for 100 or single-serve cups. The price is usually worth the artistry and effort, but what if you want to DIY? Brittany Angilecchia of Britt’s Boards has four no-fail essentials for any board.

“I always tell people, ‘you eat with your eyes’ … so when you make a board, create what I call the ‘360 effect,’ making the board desirable to both look at and consume.” Brittany has been doing dazzling, delicious boards since early 2021, expanding her former friends-and-fam enterprise to its current model of charcuterie caterer and workshop business (she even does private board-building classes in your own home). “I’ve always had a passion for food,” Brittany, a longtime teacher, smiles. “Now I’m taking the teaching part and the food part, and combining them together to create more of an experience.” Easy or elaborate, charcuterie board options can be endless (and overwhelming), but Brittany has four mainstays. Her jam of choice? Fig, specifically by Divina. “It’s my favorite jam by far.” For cheese, she chooses BellaVitano Merlot—a sweet-salty fave. “Cheddar is a crowd-pleaser, but you don’t have to go that way.” Fruit-wise, she goes with grapes. “Grapes and cheese pair well together—I like purple over green, sweet versus tart.” And meat—Italian salami, any variety. “I enjoy peppered salami most.” Why stop there? If you’re building bigger, Brittany has more tips and tricks. “All my boards have Brie—it pairs really well with jam or honey, and is the one cheese I always include.” For crackers, go with variety packs for different shapes, sizes and textures instead of buying individual boxes. Same with meats—look for trio packs versus buying separately, or have your butcher slice small quantities. Above all, don’t underestimate the time. “On average, a medium board takes at least 60 minutes to put together.” Don’t have a beautiful board? Lay down butcher paper and simply build atop that (grazing tables are in). “It’s more simple than people sometimes think.” Simple and delicious. Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
