Ohio is one of 14 states with a Warren County, each named in honor of Dr. Joseph Warren. Sadly, some of us are rather disconnected from Dr. Warren’s life and legacy. Born June 11, 1741 in Roxbur y, Massachusetts, Joseph Warren was a Har vard educated physician. The Puritanical influences of his childhood were, in time, replaced with Enlightenment notions of our natural rights to life, liberty and property.

OUR TOWN (CONTINUED) direct volunteers where to work, provide training on identifying the invasive species and the tools to remove them.” Volunteer opportunities are regularly posted on the Deerfield Township Parks and Recreation programs site, as well as on the Kingswood Park page. As of now, only three of the 40 mapped acres have been cleared, so volunteers are in high demand. “Not only do we start on new areas to remove invasive species every year, but we have to go back to the areas we worked on in the past to remove any new plants that have popped up,” Kristin explains. Deerfield Township will continue working with the Ohio River Foundation until all of the invasive species are removed from Kingswood Park. But Kristin advises park-goers to be patient in waiting for the arrival of new plants. “As we remove more plants, we will have fewer new invasive plants grow as the seed sources will also be removed,” she explains. Adesso: Old Cuban, Lakeside
ADESSO 125 E Main St., Mason AdessoIsNow.com The perfect cocktail is capable of transporting you to your happy place, at least in your mind. Such is the goal of the Lakeside, a blood orange, blackneighborhood right here in Mason, but capable of making you feel like you’re actually out on the docks. Think a Ward 8 cocktail, but with a local twist - the blackberry nectar comes straight from local Indian Springs Berry Farm and floral garnishes from the onsite flower and herb boxes. Or, try the Old Cuban, a twist on a mojito that features aged rum, prosecco, and Angostura Bitters, served in a distinctive gold-accented glass and garnished with mint and lime. They both go particularly well with the classy

SONDER BREWING 8584 Duke Blvd., Mason SonderBrewing.com Bring one, bring all to the Sonder Brewing patio! With plenty of space both inside and out, your next gathering would be well-suited to their wide-open, picnic-table-filled patio. Caffeine lovers rejoice when they try Kato Blonde Ale - featuring Script Coffee that is roasted in house and infused into a light beer, this is no winter porter or stout. Other excellent options include Voss, an incredibly well-balanced, slightly floral kölsch, and Blanc White Ale, which is a crisp, citrus-noted ale with subtle spice, best tried with an orange or lime slice for maximum refreshment. Pair it with a scratch-made meal from BrewRiver Kitchen, easily accessible onsite.

creative writing LOCAL ARTIST DERRICK HICKMAN TRANSFORMS TEXT INTO STUNNING ART.
LEBANON-BASED ARTIST DERRICK HICKMAN KNEW HE WAS AN ARTIST FROM AN EARLY AGE. His childhood was filled with a stock of art supplies and plenty of support from his family. “I was fortunate to have a family that encouraged the notion of becoming an artist,” Derrick explains. His inspired childhood led him to earn his Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) in Illustration and Advertising from The Columbus College of Art and Design, and a BFA in Art Education from Ohio University. Today he does design work, client communication and marketing during the day, with a preference for painting in the evening. After getting into a regular painting schedule over the past ten years, he developed two very different styles that he alternates between. His text abstraction series began in 2001, when he started putting abstracted words to canvas with unique color palettes and line distortion. “The first text painting happened organically,” Derrick shares. “The idea being to create a large rambling snippet of personal narrative that described my earliest memory attached to creating art.”

The series he calls “Textographies” has been successful and his paintings are now commissioned based. Recently, art consultant Chelsea Tucker Moore contacted him about presenting his art for a new mural to be located in East Walnut Hills, as part of the Woodburn Exchange Development. The mural project will begin once construction of the building is completed. For this project, Derrick will be transforming a poem to visually translate the developers’ vision of the community. missioned mural to be completed based on his text abstraction work, the first was for a Columbus-based coffee shop. His other painting focus is on his vintage toy series. These painted works are typically shown in galleries and sold directly to collectors. “The duality of the two different styles provides me with a nice balance and keeps the work from becoming tiresome,” Derrick says. When not creating art, Derrick enjoys spending time with his wife and three daughters. They share creative activities and enjoy visiting galleries, traveling and competing to be the funniest person in the house.
