Rick Flynn | President & CEO Flynn & Co. CPAs & Advisors
Are charitable contributions deductible for federal income tax purposes in 2021?
Yes, charitable contributions make up a part of total itemized deductions. A taxpayer may deduct the larger of itemized deductions or the standard deduction - $25,100 if ling married ling jointly or surviving spouse, $12,550 if ling as married ling separately or single, and $18,800 if ling as head of household. Taxpayers who take the standard deduction can still deduct $300 ($600 if married ling joint) for cash contributions. Are there any special rules for those subject to a required minimum distribution from a retirement account?
Yes, a taxpayer subject to the required minimum distribution (RMD) rules when reaching 72 years of age may direct some or all of his RMD directly to a charity of his choice. Donors can contribute the RMD to an existing fund at the Northern Cincinnati Foundation, or establish a new fund. The retirement plan owner cannot claim a deduction for this donation, but he does not have to recognize any income for the amount of the RMD donated. In this way, even if the donor will not be itemizing, he still receives full tax benet for his donation.
Erin Clemons | President & CEO Northern Cincinnati Foundation
What are the advantages of giving through the Northern Cincinnati Foundation?
The Northern Cincinnati Foundation is your partner in philanthropy, with exible giving options and a donor-focused approach to help you meet your charitable goals. We can help connect you to regional needs, and our professional sta will work with you, or your attorney or professional advisor, to determine the best giving path for your nancial picture. You can give now, receive immediate tax benets, and decide grant distributions on your timeline to support causes important to you. Is my charitable giving restricted to the northern Cincinnati region when I give through the Foundation? Although northern Cincinnati is our area of focus, we can help you make an impact in communities across the country, or around the world, in areas that align with your interests. The administrative fee from your fund supports the Foundation’s mission to improve the quality of life for communities in northern Cincinnati through grant funding and philanthropic support.

When is the last time that you did something for the first time? This tag line can be heard at Tough Mudder races and even on the radio in a country song. If you really thought about it, what would be your answer? For me it was completing an Olympic Triathlon at VOA park a few weeks ago. The Mojo Triathlon was a great challenge and a humbling experience overall. I wasn’t prepared for the open water swimming portion. It is challenging to maintain bearings! I managed to backstroke, side stroke and breath stroke my way through the mile swim. While it’s in our nature to be comfortable, when we seek new experiences and push out of our comfort zone, we are rewarded. You get to feel things you’ve never felt, see things you’ve never seen and most importantly you never wonder “what if” I never went, saw, or did. I encourage you to think about something new you want to do in 2022. Whether you want to travel, achieve a fitness endeavor or attain something in your profession, work on a plan to make it happen. And if like me, you find yourself somewhat unprepared in an open water swim, I hope you push through!

GET READY FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON WITH TABLESCAPE IDEAS AND INSPIRATION FROM INTERIORS PLUS.
WITH THE HOLIDAY SEASON FAST APPROACHING, IT’S TIME TO THINK ABOUT ADORNING YOUR DINING AREA FOR FAMILY MEALS AND SPECIAL OCCASIONS. We worked with interior designer Helen Wright of Mason’s Interiors Plus to provide a vision for your holiday tablescapes this year. Helen recommends looking for opportunities to change out just a few items to take your table decor from Thanksgiving into the winter holidays more seamlessly. Fall candles, table runners or chargers and decorative items can easily be swapped for more wintery colors or textures. Also, consider leaving bright harvest colors in October and opt for more modern neutrals that can work beyond Thanksgiving. Lastly, don’t forget your buffet table—it offers additional space for decorating that won’t interfere with your guests’ view or place settings at mealtime. All items pictured here are available through Interiors Plus. Helen’s team is always happy to suggest the perfect elements to complement your space or occasion. TREND SETTER (CONTINUED)
TIPS FOR YOUR HOLIDAY DINING AREA CENTERPIECES Keep centerpieces on your table low so guests can easily chat and pass food at the table. Also, try starting with a neutral base, such as greens and whites, that can have elements added or subtracted to add a pop of color or fit a seasonal theme. All Interiors Plus arrangements are custom and can be tailored to your dining room or holiday decor. FURNITURE Setting up the buffet or console at the head of the table allows you to create a striking display with height that can easily be changed out for the seasons. DECORATIVE ACCENTS When choosing decor items, think warm tones, cozy textures like velvet and plaid patterns for fall. Winter holidays demand sparkle with icy metallics and pops of white. Incorporate a variety of gourds for Thanksgiving and delicate deer and modern tree shapes for winter holidays. Repurposed ornaments are perfect for rounding out the look.

ISAAC MILLER’S CLAW MACHINE PROJECT RAISES MONEY FOR LOCAL NONPROFITS.
THE CLAW MACHINE IS A CLASSIC CHILDHOOD ATTRACTION AT ARCADES, RESTAURANTS AND SUPERMARKETS. While most kids are focused on strategies for capturing the prizes inside, Mason Elementary School Student, Isaac Miller, saw the claw machine as an opportunity to benefit local nonprofits. A lover of claw machines, Isaac watched videos on YouTube of people buying and using their own. This inspired him to begin considering the possibilities for owning one himself. “When my good friend JJ Day passed away, I was trying to think of a way to help,” Isaac shares. “I got a claw machine so we could raise money for the Love Like JJ Foundation.” After purchasing the claw machine and filling it with stuffed animals, he chose Sonder Brewing for its location.

plan He hopes to have 10 charitable claw machines within the next two years.
goal Donations of items to fill the claw machines are welcomed. Popular items include stuffed animals, gift cards, headphones, and books. Cash donations fund the purchase of more machines.

“I knew it was a big place and that the claw machine would give kids something to do there,” Isaac explains. Since its placement at Sonder, the claw machine has raised $1,000 for the Love Like JJ Foundation. They will use the funds Isaac donates to purchase gifts for kids at Ronald McDonald House. “It has been rewarding to see Isaac believe in this idea and see it succeed,” Isaac’s mother, Crystal Miller, reflects. Isaac prefers to fill the machines with donated items so that 100% of the profits can go directly to charity rather than sacrificing a portion to cover the purchase of new prize items. Popular prizes include pop-it fidgets, stuffed animals, gift cards, t-shirts and more. His second claw machine is placed at Third Eye Brewing, owned by Bonnie and Tom Collins. Proceeds from this claw machine will be donated to the Live Like Maya Foundation, which funds pediatric cancer research. Isaac’s third claw machine will also benefit Love Like JJ and is currently in need of a home. Isaac’s dream is to one day have an entire arcade whose proceeds would be donated to nonprofits. CHURCH'S RENTED OFFICE SPACE TO START A FOOD PANTRY. From the start, their mission was to go further than the average food pantry—they wanted to establish unique relationships with every family that they served. Eventually, they branched out to offer literacy tutoring, technology resources and addiction recovery services, making it possible for Joshua’s Place to help more people than ever before. We spoke with Joshua’s Place founder Kevin Peyton about their expanded location in Mason and their upcoming plans. YOUR ORGANIZATION BEGAN 13 YEARS AGO, AND NOW INCLUDES HUNDREDS OF VOLUNTEERS. WHAT WAS YOUR PROCESS OF ACHIEVING SUCCESS AND HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO GROW AS IMPRESSIVELY AS YOU HAVE? A key to our growth has been our willingness to listen to the families we serve and provide help in a way that makes a difference while also preserving dignity and self-worth. We find that this approach resonates with those wanting to help, but not knowing exactly what help looks like. We currently have more than 400 volunteers who come from more than 30 churches in the areas surrounding the five school districts (Mason, Kings, Lebanon, Little Miami, Deer Park) that we support.

Living a Purposeful Life
PROBABLY BEST KNOWN FOR BEING LEAD #20 IN THE BACHELOR, THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO BEN HIGGINS THAN BEING ONE OF AMERICA’S REALITY TV SWEETHEARTS, SUCH AS HIS DEEP PASSION FOR MAKING MOVES TO “MULTIPLY GOOD IN THE WORLD.” PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED 38
Since his time on The Bachelor, Ben has taken the opportunity to use his fame to create not one, but two inspiring podcasts, publish a successful autobiography, while also elevating awareness of his “for-purpose” Generous Coffee brand. We sat down with him (virtually) to reflect on all that he has accomplished in this season of “thankfulness.”

BH: The idea came in July of 2017 and we launched in January of 2018. When the show [The Bachelor] happened, our fundraising increased 500%, but we also knew that it probably wasn’t going to last. We asked ourselves how we can make this more sustainable, and we came up with the idea that we could start a for-profit business and call ourselves “for-purpose.” We donate 100% of our profits to non-profits.
