project’s leaders. “We also wanted to give people a way to connect and socialize with each other in a fun and positive way.” The concept is simple: paint a rock, protect it with a weatherproof seal and donate it to be part of one of the themed “rock gardens” now planted along the Mason Mile, a one-mile stretch of downtown from Reading Road to Main Street. With the help of local schools, clubs, businesses and families, the project has blossomed beyond anything Peg or Helen could have expected. “We hoped to collect enough rocks to establish six to eight gardens,” Peg explains. “We now have 13 gardens of various sizes and over 1,400 painted rocks.” The project’s reach has been impressive. Peg estimates more than 1,500 people have participated since January 2025 through painting events at schools, Girl Scout meetings, Kiwanis Club gatherings, family parties and public events. Businesses eagerly signed on to host rock gardens outside their storefronts. “Everybody we asked said yes,” Peg enthuses. “The response we’ve had has exceeded our expectations.”

Take a stroll through downtown Mason and you’re bound to notice something special— bright pops of color nestled in flower beds, peeking out next to shrubs and tucked along walkways. These cheerful surprises are painted rocks, each one a tiny work of art. Together they make up the Mason Mile Rocks project, a community-driven beautification effort that's bringing color, creativity and connection to the heart of Mason. The idea began with longtime Mason residents Peg Elfers and Helen Fox, friends who’ve shared a passion for civic engagement and the arts. What started as a response to a call for ideas from the Mason Deerfield Chamber Community Development Corporation (MADECDC) quickly turned into a citywide movement. “The main goal of the Mason Mile Rocks project is to attract Mason residents and hopefully nonresidents to the downtown Mason Mile, and in doing so, increase foot traffic inside and outside of Mason businesses,” says Peg, a retired Mason High School teacher and one of the

Helen Fox, who has lived in Mason since 1985, sees the project as a natural extension of the community spirit that’s been growing downtown. “We’ve personally enjoyed the improvement of Mason’s downtown and the expansion of retail offerings and activities,” Helen says. “Peg and I often brainstorm about ways to make Mason more inviting, walkable and successful for businesses and patrons.” This isn’t the duo’s first foray into community art. In 2023, they coordinated Picture Mason, an exhibit featuring small canvas artworks celebrating favorite local landmarks. The Mason Mile Rocks project, they hope, will bring even more people into the creative fold. “Most people understand how to paint a rock and the small burst of joy discovering a rock with a positive message or clever design can bring,” Helen explains. “With larger displays of these rocks, we hope the impact is even greater.”
“Peg and I often brainstorm about ways to make Mason more inviting, walkable and successful for businesses and patrons.”-Helen Fox President/CEO of the MADE Chamber + CDC, Sherry Taylor, believes that a fun, active and beautiful Mason Mile, which is home to over 100 locally owned businesses, will help attract visitors and residents to Mason. “This initiative checks all of those boxes for us as it adds a fun environment with the creativity of the rocks, it helps people be active throughout the Mile as they travel to and from the rock gardens and the rock art adds to the beauty and aesthetics of the neighborhood," Sherry explains. Community members can still get involved by visiting the Mason Mile Rocks public group on Facebook, where a map of all the rock gardens is available. Rocks can be painted and dropped off at the MADE Chamber front porch, 316 W. Main St. CONTINUED >

“What’s been most meaningful to me has been the wonderful talent and creativity I’ve witnessed and the goodwill among all those involved,” Peg says. “I see parents with their children or friends walking down Main Street, looking closely at the rocks, and I know that we have done a good thing.” It’s a simple idea with a big impact—just one more reason to love exploring downtown Mason. Red River Gorge
2 Hours Red River Gorge is to the south, just east of Lexington. I like this area because it checks all of the boxes when I’m looking to get lost in nature. It’s an easy drive with tons of great cabin options and lots to do. My favorite hike on this list is the Auxier Ridge Trail. It’s about four miles roundtrip, and the vista views of Courthouse Rock are unmatched. For the best experience at Auxier Ridge, head out for sunset. Be sure to pack a headlamp for the hike back. Don’t miss out on Natural Bridge–a short (but steep) hike will take you to the top, where you can enjoy incredible panoramic views. There’s also a chairlift to the top if that’s more your style. Discover cave kayaking, rock climbing, late-night bonfires, zip lining and so much more awaiting you at The Gorge! RedRiverGorge.com
Hocking Hills State Park Red River Gorge
2½ Hours Hocking Hills is tucked away within the rolling forests of Southeastern Ohio. I love going for a couple of nights at a time to unplug. What sets Hocking Hills apart are the super unique cabin experiences. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a luxury stay with all the bells and whistles or an adventurous treehouse, Hocking Hills has a wide range of rentals. During my last visit, we stayed at Raven’s Retreat, a remote cabin on 58 acres, featuring a hot tub, fire pit, sauna, yoga deck in the forest and space for up to 16 guests. Be sure to spend some time in the Old Man’s Cave area. Another one of my top picks is the Rock House hike. Home to the only cave in the park, it boasts 25-foot-high ceilings and is 200 feet long! Cuyahoga Valley
“I’d suggest using Cleveland as your home base. Consider getting out on Lake Erie, taking the family to Cedar Point or strolling through the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to round out your weekend.”
Cuyahoga Valley National Park
3½ Hours Cuyahoga Valley is Ohio’s only National Park. It resides in the north, between the cities of Akron and Cleveland, and takes about 3½ hours by car from Cincinnati. Although there are a few decent hiking trails (my favorite is The Ledges Overlook), the experience here is less hiking oriented than other options on this list. Instead of booking a cabin, I’d suggest using Cleveland as your home base for a two-or three-night weekend getaway to the area. Not only can you explore the park, but you can take in all that Cleveland has to offer as well. Consider getting out on Lake Erie, taking the family to Cedar Point or strolling through the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to round out your weekend. Inside the National Park you’ll find a lot of history about the Erie Canal system, which once powered Ohio’s economy. There are several well-preserved lock systems scattered throughout the park. You can even take a scenic train ride through the park aboard the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. This is a great way to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time. My favorite photography spots in the park and surrounding area are the Station Road Bridge, which towers high above the Cuyahoga River, Tinker Falls or Brandywine Falls–both waterfalls are located just outside the official National Park boundaries. If you’re looking for a great place to ride bikes or go bird watching, Beaver Marsh is another one of my favorite spots in the park. Since Cuyahoga Valley is a bit further away, I’d encourage you to spend a little more time there to take in everything the region has to offer. NPS.gov/cuva/index.htm

While summer is known as a time for family vacations, camp for kids and endless pool days, it’s also a perfect opportunity to explore the excellent museums of Southwest Ohio. Whether you hope to experience local history, inspiring artists or cultural artifacts, there are plenty of options throughout the Dayton and Cincinnati areas. Before heading out on a local adventure, consider signing up for a library card through the Cincinnati Public Library to reserve a Discovery Pass for the American Sign Museum, Taft Museum of Art and others. Many local museums also have special exhibits, activities and events scheduled for visitors throughout the summer and early fall. We’ve gathered a few to get you ready to explore!

AMERICAN SIGN MUSEUM
CARILLON HISTORICAL PARK
AmericanSignMuseum.org
DaytonHistor y.org
The American Sign Museum in Cincinnati’s Camp Washington neighborhood is on a mission to celebrate the rich history of American signage through preservation and education. “Signs and sign making are a fascinating reflection of America through the years. If your experience at the American Sign Museum causes you to be more aware of signs in your travels and of their value to businesses and communities, we’ve done our job,” says Tod Swormstedt, founder and curator. This summer, enjoy guided tours and neon demonstrations every weekend, as well as sign-crafting activities in their classroom on Saturdays throughout July. Their first special exhibition, Glow & Behold, will also be on display through the end of July. All of these are included with general admission.
Dayton History’s Carillon Historical Park museum complex opened in 1950 to showcase the region’s industrial innovations, transportation achievements and Dayton’s contributions to world progress. The beautiful 65-acre campus was designed by the Olmsted Brothers (landscape architects of NYC’s Central Park) and contains dozens of museum buildings and countless artifacts. Plan your visits around Deeds Carillon Concerts in July, August and September or explore during special events like the Band Organ Rally on July 12-13 and the Antique Fire Apparatus Show on August 30. For an extra special experience attend their signature event, Dayton’s Concours d’Elegance, on September 13. Featuring around 200 antique and classic automobiles and motorcycles, it’s a one-of-a-kind opportunity to see some of the finest vehicles in the country.

TAFT MUSEUM OF ART
DAYTON ART INSTITUTE

DaytonArtInstitute.org
The Taft Museum of Art collection galleries are located in the Baum-Longworth-Sinton-Taft historic house. Built around 1820, it is downtown Cincinnati’s oldest wooden residence still in its original location. The mansion was home to generations of prominent Cincinnatians and contains over 800 works of art, featuring Chinese porcelains, American furniture, European decorative arts and major holdings of European and American paintings, including works by artists such as Francisco Goya, John Singer Sargent and James McNeill Whistler. They frequently host changing exhibitions and welcome summer visitors to enjoy The Crafted World of Wharton Esherick on view through September 7. The rarely loaned collection highlights the Pennsylvania artist’s career from his early woodcut illustrations to his revolutionary reimagining of furniture forms as organic sculpture. Admission is free on Sundays and Mondays.
The Dayton Art Institute (DAI) was founded in 1919 and has grown into one of the region’s premier fine arts museums. The museum’s collection spans 5,000 years of art history, including important American, Ancient American, Asian and European fine and decorative art collections. In addition to the permanent collection, which numbers more than 27,000 objects, DAI hosts world-class special exhibitions, educational programs and unique special events such as Oktoberfest on September 27 and 28. This summer (July 12–September 14), take in the Curtis Barnes Sr., Dayton Icon exhibit. A painter and educator, Curtis Barnes Sr., created bold, colorful, experimental paintings with a distinctive blend of naturalism and abstraction. Explore the museum for free on August 17, when DAI welcomes art lovers of all backgrounds to the museum for a special Art For All day.
