’Tis the Season

Pregnancy isn’t easy—but it doesn’t have to be painful.

Chiropractic care during pregnancy helps reduce back and hip discomfort, ease tension, and support a smoother delivery by balancing the pelvis and reducing nervous system interference. Gentle adjustments promote optimal fetal positioning and prepare your body for birth, naturally.

And for baby? Cranial sacral therapy helps release tension from birth, supporting better sleep, digestion, and nervous system regulation—setting the stage for a calm, thriving little one.

Moments that Make the Season Bright

The holiday season is all about connection with joyful moments spent giving, gathering and celebrating the beauty of community. It’s a time when generosity shines and simple traditions remind us what really matters.

You’ll hear that spirit in the cheerful ring of the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign bells. Every donation given here stays within our local area, supporting families with food, clothing and essentials when they need them most. For many volunteers, ringing the bell has become a cherished family tradition and a reminder that even small acts of kindness can have a big impact.

Holiday magic is on full display on stages and streets across the region. From the Mason Symphony Orchestra’s Christmas in Mason and Mason Dance Center’s lively The Nutcracker—All Jazzed Up! to Elf the Musical performed by The Children’s Theatre and Scrooge! The Musical at La Comedia, there’s something festive for every family. Just up the road, the Horse-Drawn Carriage Parade and Christmas Festival transforms downtown Lebanon into a holiday postcard, complete with twinkling lights, cocoa and carriages jingling through the streets.

For those gathering around the table, The Heirloom Chef’s Jackie Djordjevic reminds us that food is one of the simplest, most heartfelt gifts we can give. Her comforting, wholesome recipes are perfect for nourishing family, friends and neighbors.

This December, may our homes and hearts be filled with gratitude, generosity and good company. Wishing you a season of warmth, joy and wonder from our team to yours.

Follow the Jingle of the Bell

ARTICLE BY MIKE BURCHAM | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Red Kettle season is the most wonderful time of the year to give to The Salvation Army.

The act of giving is part of what makes the holiday season so magical. There may not be a better example of giving than the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign.

“I like to say that we were the original crowdfunders,” shares Julie Budden, divisional director of development for Salvation Army’s Southwest Ohio and Northeast Kentucky Division.

The Red Kettle Campaign began in 1891 in San Francisco, when a Salvation Army officer put out a lobster pot to collect donations to help feed 1,000 people on Christmas Day. The ringing of the bell was introduced in 1907 in New York as a volunteer attempted to draw the attention of bankers on Wall Street to donate. The tradition has continued since and grown to help more than 31 million people during the holidays.

One of the unique benefits of giving to the Red Kettle Campaign is that the donations stay in your zip code.

“Funds raised stay local to a community to serve those needs,” Julie says. “In recent years, we have received an increase in requests for things like rental assistance, which helps with the prevention of homelessness, utilities and essentials like food, clothing or emergency needs.

“At Christmas time, families who may need to make challenging choices on a tight budget can turn to us for support,” she adds. “We believe no child should be forgotten at Christmas, and with the help of generous contributions, we can meet the immediate and longer-term needs of families all year long. The Salvation Army’s love extends far beyond the moment of service.”

Salvation Army’s Red Kettles can be found at local Kroger and Walmart stores as well as other retail locations throughout the region. Donate beyond the Red Kettle by giving online or via text message. The Salvation Army is also supported by corporate donations, grants and in-kind donations.

Salvation Army Christmas volunteers work to make the season special for people in need.

The Red Kettle Campaign started in 1891 in San Francisco when a Salvation Army officer put out a lobster pot to collect donations to help feed 1,000 people on Christmas Day.

Giving the gift of your time is another way to help the Salvation Army.

“We have volunteer opportunities available and going to our website can help you identify your closest location for year-round opportunities as well as bell ringing,” Julie explains. “Bell ringing shifts are usually two hours, and they can be somewhere close to your neighborhood. Many families bring their children and make this an annual tradition.”

Beloved Cincinnati WGRR radio personalities Chris O’Brien and Janeen Coyle will follow previous ambassador Jim Scott in encouraging volunteers as the 2025 Red Kettle Ambassadors for The Salvation Army in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

“Jim Scott set such a wonderful example of what it means to give with joy,” say Chris and Janeen. “We’re honored to follow

in his footsteps and help keep that bell ringing for families who need a little extra hope this Christmas.”

The Red Kettle Campaign kicked off in November and runs through Christmas Eve.

“I cherish the holiday tradition of hearing the sound of the bells every year because you know Christmas is on the way and someone’s Christmas will be better because of you and your contribution, big or small,” Julie notes. “The Salvation Army kettles and bells are a reminder to give to others.”

This Red Kettle season, follow the jingle of the bell and consider giving in person, send the text KETTLE to 31333, volunteer time or donate gifts online. SalArmy.org/SWONEKY

HEALTHY COMFORT FOOD

Keep your family and friends nourished with a crowd-pleasing spread courtesy of The Heirloom Chef.

As chilly weather settles in, we yearn to cozy up with a comforting meal. Comfort food and healthy don’t often go hand-in-hand, but for The Heirloom Chef’s Jackie Djordjevic, the focus is on creating a balance so all foods can fit with mindful swaps in her recipes.

“For instance, if I’m making a chicken pot pie, I may use coconut milk or low-fat milk rather than whole milk. For Heirloom Chef meals, we only use healthy cooking oils like olive oil. It’s an easy

way to make sure we are providing healthy fats,” she explains.

Winter may not seem like the season for plentiful produce, but Jackie reminds us it can still be an exciting time for wholesome ingredients.

“We love using hearty squash like acorn squash. We also offer winter greens like kale and collard greens, and then we will brighten up dishes with a citrus marinade,” Jackie enthuses.

COMFORT FOR THE CROWD

Meat pies with potatoes are a familiar tradition in many different cultures, and Jackie loves making this crowd-pleasing shepherd’s pie for that reason. The side of nutty, herbaceous roasted cabbage is a nod to her grandpa’s cooking.

“He made simple Serbian dishes like cabbage all the time, so this is my elevated take on a simple vegetable, while also drawing inspiration from his recipes,” she shares.

Whether you’re serving up a family-style meal for visitors or meal prepping for a neighbor or friend, these nourishing recipes are sure to keep the season cozy.

SHEPHERD’S PIE

SERVES

6-8 people

Ingredients:

Meat filling:

• 1 medium onion, diced

• 2 whole carrots, diced

• 1/2 cup frozen peas

• 2 tablespoons garlic, minced

• 2 lbs ground beef

• 2 cans of tomato puree

• 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped

• 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning

• Salt and pepper, to taste

• Fresh herbs (basil, parsley) to garnish (optional)

Mashed potatoes topping:

• 6-8 small to medium potatoes, peeled

• 2 tablespoons butter

• 1 can of coconut milk (any milk or milk alternative)

• Salt, pepper and smoked paprika, to taste

Directions:

1. Prepare the filling by browning the meat in a skillet until about halfway cooked. Add all vegetables, garlic and seasonings. Continue to cook until the beef is done. Add tomato puree and season with salt and pepper.

2. Meanwhile, bring a medium pot of water to a boil. Add potatoes and cook until soft. Drain and add coconut milk, salt and pepper and mash until you get a whipped potato consistency.

3. To assemble, add the meat filling to a casserole dish and smooth it out evenly. Add mashed potatoes to the top and spread evenly or pipe on for additional texture. Sprinkle with a little smoked paprika and bake in the oven at 350°F for 15-20 minutes or until the mashed potatoes start to brown slightly.

ROASTED CABBAGE WEDGES

SERVES

6-8 people

Ingredients:

• 1 head of cabbage

• 1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese

• 1/4 cup olive oil

• 1/2 cup parsley

• 1 tablespoon garlic, minced

• 1/4 cup almonds, chopped

• Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

1. To prepare, cut the cabbage into wedges. You should get about 8 wedges.

2. Mix the other ingredients in a bowl and brush the cabbage with the mixture, making sure to saturate the cabbage leaves. Season with salt and pepper.

3. Roast in the oven at 425°F for 15-20 minutes.

BALANCED MEALS FOR HEALTHY LIVING

The Heirloom Chef is a meal prep service dedicated to feeding families in the greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky areas. They focus on real food, cooked simply, using the best ingredients they can find.

“People choose us because we offer family-style meals and single meals. It’s easy for them to get dinner on the table and feel good about what they are feeding their family. It’s a win-win,” Jackie explains.

Gifting Heirloom Chef meals is another thoughtful way to care for family, friends and neighbors any time of year.

“What’s better than the gift of food? Food is comfort in a time of healing, it’s a peace offering, a way to say thank you or congratulations on a new chapter,” Jackie adds.

CANDLELIGHT, CARRIAGES AND CHRISTMAS JOY

ARTICLE BY LISA FLETCHER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

There’s something timeless about the sound of jingling bells on a frosty December afternoon. The rhythmic clop of hooves against brick streets, the laughter of children clutching steaming cups of cocoa and the sight of horses draped in ribbons and holly—it all feels like a Christmas card come to life.

For the city of Lebanon, that holiday vision is a reality on December 6 during the Horse Drawn Carriage Parade & Christmas Festival, the largest of its kind in the nation. It’s the day when history, community and the holiday season converge, with lanterns glowing and sleigh bells ringing.

“The annual Horse Drawn Carriage Parade has become a beloved tradition in our community since its inception in 1988,” explains Executive Director of the Lebanon Area Chamber of Commerce, Janis Baker. “Because we have a rich history of harness horses at the Warren County Fairgrounds, and through their cooperation and contacts, the parade grew in popularity. Each year, it brings together thousands of residents and visitors to celebrate the holiday season with unique charm and joy.”

More than 20,000 visitors now line the streets of Lebanon each year to witness this extraordinary celebration. What makes it even more magical? There isn’t just one parade, but two, at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.

“The afternoon parade allows spectators to fully appreciate the intricate details of the carriages and horses,” Janis explains. “As evening descends, the atmosphere transforms with a stunning display of lighted carriages and horses, creating a magical spectacle.”

The event has grown from a small parade into a full-day festival, complete with artisans, food vendors and sweet treats to warm chilly hands. For families, there’s plenty to entertain even the youngest spectators, including an appearance by Santa Claus alongside a charming attraction—the delightful Highlander mini cows.

LEBANON’S HORSE DRAWN CARRIAGE PARADE OFFERS HOMETOWN HOLIDAY SPLENDOR.

Since 2000, the parade has held the title of largest horse-drawn carriage parade in the United States, a distinction awarded by the U.S. Carriage Association. More than 65 carriages participate each year, ranging from stately Clydesdale teams and glistening vis-à-vis carriages to buggies and surreys trimmed with holiday finery. One of the most crowd-pleasing sights is the antique fire water pumper carriage that races through the streets at the end of each parade, bell ringing in triumph.

While the parade’s charm is rooted in nostalgia, new surprises and amenities keep the experience fresh, including a shuttle that runs all day and free parking. This year, with the City of Lebanon’s help, they were able to secure the Teamster Carriage out of Springfield, Mo., and the Lundergan Carriage from Maysville, Ky.

The parade’s success is the product of deep community collaboration. “Thanks to a dedicated committee that works year round and our presenting sponsor, Mane, Inc., we successfully bring all the features of the parade together,” Janis remarks. “We have 13 volunteer organizers who work in various areas, including hospitality, reserved box seating, VIP parking and entertainment. The collaboration and passion of all of our teams make this event a resounding success.”

Among those longtime volunteers is Georgetta Vice, who has been part of the parade for 32 years. As chairperson of the barricade committee, she helps coordinate over 70 volunteers per parade to staff 43 locations covering 20 city blocks. She coordinates with the police, fire and public works departments to solve problems and oversee security.

For Georgetta, the reason she keeps coming back year after year is simple. “A lifelong love of horses brought me to the parade, and I have always loved the City of Lebanon,” she shares. “It takes a village to put this event together, and they are like family to me. We have a lot of fun delivering a beautiful parade.”

She admits her favorite part never gets old: “I love feeling the ground shake when a team of draft horses comes barreling down the parade route. You can hear and feel them before you can even see them. That never fails to make me light up like a kid on Christmas Day!”

For those who attend, the Lebanon Horse Drawn Carriage Parade isn’t just another parade; it’s an experience that lingers long after the horses have trotted home. “There’s something truly magical about this event,” Janis observes. “The jingling sounds of bells and reins, the rhythmic hooves, the twinkling lights and the adorned costumes all combine to create an unforgettable experience, perfectly kicking off the Christmas season.”

Janis invites everyone to experience the magic firsthand, from free parking and shuttle services to festive entertainment, family-friendly activities and carriage rides through downtown. “Your presence enriches the spirit of our parade and helps us celebrate the community’s vibrant equine culture,” she offers.
