Scholarships for Success MASON SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION OFFERS FINANCIAL HELP TO MASON STUDENTS CONTINUING THEIR EDUCATION AND TRAINING. Chad Wonder, Skylar Drefcinski, Kimmie Lyon, Megan Slater, Lauren Wise (2016 recipients)
WE HEAR A LOT ABOUT HOW EXPENSIVE IT IS TO PURSUE EDUCATION AND TRAINING AFTER HIGH SCHOOL. Whether it is a four-year college or a two-year technical school, paying for post-graduation schooling is a huge concern. For high school seniors residing in Mason, help is available from the Mason Scholarship Foundation (MSF). A 501(c)(3) nonprofit, MSF was founded in 1983 by the Kiwanis Club of Mason. It is dedicated to furthering the higher education and training of students by providing significant two and four-year financial scholarships. To date, MSF has awarded more than 155 scholarships totaling $525,000. Dick Yost, a long-time Kiwanis member and an original MSF founder, explains, “Mason Kiwanis is an active, get-thingsdone community service organization. We mostly focus on our youth and schools and the MSF is part of that commitment.” He adds, “Mason schools draw families to the community for the quality education they offer. The scholarship foundation is basically rewarding the schools and the city for their efforts in elevating these students to such a high level. All the recipients respond with how important this Gary Popplewell, Nimanthi Ranatunga (2018 recipient), Jack Mueller (MSF President)
scholarship is for their education. Every little bit helps.” Scholarships are open to Mason High School graduating seniors, as well as those residing in the Mason City School District regardless of the high school they attend, including home schooled students. Awards are given to students pursuing degrees at two-year community colleges and technical schools and four-year colleges and universities. ARTICLE KAREN ANDREA PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Applications for 2021 are being accepted now. According to the Kiwanis website: “preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate commitment to community service, strong educational motivation, and leadership skills through their activities in school, faith organizations, youth groups, volunteer efforts, and work experience.” Dick describes the characteristics of the students he has interviewed, “I am totally impressed by the applicants’ poise, abilities and intelligence. They are amazing, quality young people. This is really a great city, represented by these outstanding students.” Megan Slater, a 2020 Magna Cum Laude graduate of The Ohio State University, is one of these exceptional and grateful scholarship recipients. She shares, “Scholarships of any amount are extremely helpful in easing the financial burden of college. The scholarship I received from the Mason Scholarship Foundation significantly reduced the cost of my undergraduate tuition.”

She adds, “This scholarship is special, as it comes from the Mason community I have lived in my entire life. Knowing the community believed in my ability to succeed was a great confidence booster as I headed to college.” MSF continues to be financially stable and successful through the hard work and dedication of the members of the Kiwanis Club of Mason and the great support of the Mason community for their annual golf outing and pancake breakfast fundraisers. Mark Swartz, MSF Board Vice President states, “Most of the fundraising for the foundation is accomplished through the Kiwanis Club’s activities. Individual donors and companies are also part of the fundraising efforts and we encourage more community members and businesses to partner with us to support our students and provide these important scholarships. There is such a value we can bring to our students who want to continue their education.” Megan

Whether you are a business owner in Mason or an individual who has felt the support of the Mason community, getting involved with the MSF allows you to pay it forward by supporting and shaping the futures of young, determined members of your community.” For information about donating and for HS Seniors interested in applying for a two or four-year program scholarship, please visit: MasonKiwanis.org.

R E V U P YO U R G A R AG E THIS IMPRESSIVE GARAGE PROJECT ALL STARTED LAST YEAR AS A REQUEST FROM THE HOMEOWNER’S SON TO CREATE AN AT-HOME GYM. They needed to free up space in the basement by shifting some storage to the garage. So, they reached out to Closets by Design (CBD) to accomplish their organizational goals while also upgrading the look of the garage. A year later, the space looks just as clean and organized as the day it was finished, and the owner’s son is happily using his home gym.

DESIGN AND INSTALLATION
A designer from CBD meets with the client to discuss their storage needs. “We identify obstacles and work with the homeowner to design a storage solution that fits their space and works best for them,” says CBD project designer Trey Wight. After the customer approves the designs, cabinets are built at their factory. Next, the installation team sets up the space per the approved drawings.
STORAGE SOLUTIONS
“Clients are typically looking for garage storage solutions to accommodate belongings such as lawn and garden equipment, sporting goods and holiday decor,” explains Trey. “We use a combination of cabinets and DesignWall systems to store or hang the customer’s items.” CONTINUED >

The DesignWall is a great way to save space by hanging lawn tools, small power-tools, sporting goods and hoses or extension cords. It is available in several colors and with accessories like hooks and baskets that allow for hanging just about anything. This garage features a DesignWall hanging storage system in Grey.

CABINETS
Cabinets are fully customizable to fit the client’s space and store a variety of items. The floor-based systems use legs with leveling adjusters to compensate for uneven floors. The cabinets are leveled and then attached to the wall for greater stability. All cabinets are built with shelves strengthened with metal supports to hold heavier items. This design has custom Black melamine cabinets with shelf and door stiffeners. It also features doors and drawer faces in Brushed Aluminum with Matte Nickel barrel handles.

FLOORING
CBD uses tiles that are heat, slip and chemical resistant. The tiles interlock for fast installation and come in several colors that allow the customer to create their own design. Flooring can be installed over chipped or cracked concrete and is easily cleaned using a leaf blower or hose. This project uses a smooth Traxtile polymer tile floor with a custom color and design.

The Journal of Christian Newcomer
chronicles a period from 1810-1829 when he made annual horseback trips between his home in Hagerstown, Maryland and southwestern Ohio. Spread throughout the pages are occasional tales detailing bouts of sickness and disease. The people of various communities fell helplessly in large numbers to infectious ailments that were beyond their understanding. It was a year ago this month when the Coronavirus Pandemic became more than just a story of impending doom for Warren County Ohio. Some of us have lost loved ones. Some of us have lost jobs or businesses. We all have sacrificed. Yet I can’t help but wonder what would have happened had COVID-19 come calling for Christian Newcomer during his assorted travels. I can’t help but be grateful for the gifts we receive thanks to the relentless march of curious minds and scientific discovery.

Yes, we’re still inconvenienced. Yes, too many of us are waiting for a vaccine. Yes, you’re ready to leave the mask wearing to your dentist and hygienist. LUXURY VINYL PLANKS
The hottest flooring category is luxury vinyl planks (LVP). They are an affordable, easy care and waterproof flooring option, perfect for active households. The nicer offerings have great visuals, textures and a painted bevel, making each plank stand out. LVP are also floating floors, meaning they are not glued down and can be walked on right after install. Floor Coverings International local franchise owner Katie Fitzgerald shares, “Light, neutral colors that mix tans and greys are popular in LVP, and people are beginning to go beyond the kitchen and bathroom for a seamless look throughout their homes.”
04
Floor Coverings International can create custom stair runners out of any carpets they sell. “We
typically make them out of nylon or wool carpets for the most durable fibers,” says Katie. They also have multiple options for binding the edges depending on the desired look. Stair runners are great for adding style and aesthetics, but also for slip resistance, protection and sound damping. Don’t be afraid to go bold with patterns. “This helps the stair runner stand out and become a nice focal point in the home,” explains Katie. CONTINUED >

Thank You Readers! I moved Wagner Law to Deerfield Township in 2016 because this is my community. We live here; my children attend Mason Schools; they play and I coach Mason SAY soccer; we shop and see our doctors here. And during this past, challenging year, we have quarantined, worn masks and stayed socially distanced with our community. This year marks my 26th year practicing law and my career has taken me all over the world. But my practice has never been as meaningful to me as it is now—helping the people right here in my own home community. So, from the bottom of my heart: Thank You for your support.
