SEVENTH-GRADER JASON WANG COMPETES IN WORLD CHESS COMPETITION Mason Middle School seventh-grader Jason Wang recently played at the World Cadets Chess Championship U-12 in Spain as one of the USA Chess Team members. This is the third time Jason played the most important annual tournament in his age group, as one of the top chess players in the country. Jason placed eighth out of 11 competitors in the U-12 division, which has more than 200 players from 63 countries. FIDE.com
BREWERY TO OPEN IN WARREN COUNTY AMMO FACTORY Cartridge Brewing Co. announced through social media that it will help to restore the historic Peters Cartridge factory in Kings Mills to “its former glory as a gathering place for the Kings Mills community.” Plans include a full-service kitchen and a brewhouse dedicated to a variety of taproom beers and special bottle releases. The new brewery is scheduled to open in 2019 and will be the first of many new tenants to use the old factory. And as electronics continue to evolve to newer models, basements will continue to fill with old, outdated devices. But one Mason church has found a generous and ecofriendly solution for that clutter. The Charitable Computing Ministry at St. Susanna Catholic Church was born in September 2017 after an Earth Day drive left the church with hundreds of donated computers needing homes. A plea for help was listed in the weekly bulletin, and one parishioner willingly answered that call. Marty Klenke, a retired business executive and volunteer SCORE business consultant, co-founded the ministry with Mary Jo Burns and created a business plan with a mission for volunteers to provide free computers to local charities within Warren County and the surrounding community. The ministry currently has eight volunteers. “The program started with the idea that if we could help less fortunate families and kids get access to the software and the tools to better themselves, then that would be a great value that we could provide to the community,” Marty says. “We help people with what we

SECON D S TOP Typically, when donating a computer, the owner will need to utilize a service to wipe the hard drive clean of personal information. According to Marty, the Charitable Computing Ministry (CCM) is somewhat unique in that they use DBAN software that applies a Department of Defense protocol to secure a clean disk completely free of charge. Once CCM volunteers clean the disk, the refurbished computer is loaded with Linux, a free, open-source software operating system, which Marty says, “is used on virtually all Cloud computers and supercomputers of the world because it is so fast. “The code is so tight and so fast that it can run on old machines quite well. It looks and feels a lot like Windows except that it runs a lot faster.” They also load the computers with a suite of free office software and web tools. All types of computers and related devices are welcome for donation except Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors. Printers and computer accessories donations are also taken. Businesses can also donate unneeded equipment. CCM once received projectors that attach to computers, three of which were shipped to a startup school in Uganda through a local charity. Volunteers are available to pick up the equipment from a residence or business, provide the donor with a receipt, and then determine on a case-by-case basis if it can be reformatted for donation. Even if the entire computer isn’t viable, usable parts will be removed and the rest will be recycled. They sometimes call on local businesses to help support their mission. Storm Guard Roofing and Construction of Mason donated wooden pallets for safely storing the donated computers, and Ryan Professional IT Services of West Chester helps them troubleshoot especially difficult computers they're refurbishing.

Janet and David Nelson are the current owners of Manor House. They purchased the business from close friends Kathy and Bill Kinane in 2018. “We always knew we wanted to own a business together,” David says. “Janet had experience in the industry having organized multiple fundraising events at Manor House, and we’d attended numerous events there for social and business functions. The property itself is truly unique and has a history of renovation and expansion. The Manor House, which was originally the Weller Farm, opened in 1997 with a space that housed only one banquet room. Today’s incarnation of Manor House boasts 16 acres of land and multiple facilities for both indoor and outdoor events—a distinctive feature for an event space in the Greater Cincinnati area. “Having been here for more than 20 years means we’ve seen it all, we’ve done it all and we’ve run it all,” explains Jerry Damron, Manor House’s operations manager. “People can have peace of mind thanks to our great reputation and experience. Are you a collector? For my brothers and me our “MATCHBOX” Toys were our absolute favorites. I still have all of my original childhood “MATCHBOX” cars and trucks, but as an adult, I’ve put together a wider “MATCHBOX” collection from the 1950’s and 60’s. Those of you who have visited us at the dental office know that I have some of my toys on display there. It was 1956 when “MATCHBOX” introduced the Models of Yesteryear range. The toys were a slightly larger scale than traditional “MATCHBOX” toys, and the models depicted antique cars, trucks and steam vehicles. Each year at Christmas I found a new Models of Yesteryear toy in my stocking. Back in the summer of 2008, one of our patients, Elliott came in for his appointment with a box in his hands. He explained to me that he loved touring my toys each time he visited the office. Like me, as a child Elliott had put together a group of toys from the Models of Yesteryear range. Unlike me, he had kept them in their beautiful original boxes! Elliott handed me the box and told me that he wanted me to have his childhood collection. Instead of the toys being stowed away in a closet at home he liked the idea of the toys being out and on display where others could enjoy his treasures. Elliott is one of those special people for whom thinking of others just comes naturally. So yes, of course, you are encouraged to stop in to see us at the office to discuss your dental health concerns and dreams. But you also are officially invited to stop by to see Elliott’s and my toys! If you behave I just might send you back out the door with a “MATCHBOX” Toy of your own, with which you too can start a collection of your own.
