Mason City Schools Celebrate and Honor Veterans Mason City School District honored veterans last November with a school-wide parade with students walking alongside veterans. Students also wrote letters to the men and women going through basic training and along with their families, created hearts with the names of loved ones who have served or are serving. Veterans even participated as speakers in classes.

The Nutcracker: All Jazzed Up The Mason Dance Center gave an enchanting performance at its 17th annual Nutcracker: All Jazzed Up event. All funds from this benefit performance were donated to the Mason High School After Prom Program. All Mason Dance Center Performance Group and PreProfessional Ballet students performed, as well as some of the younger ballet students as angels and lambs.

Like many aspiring musicians, Gwen Smith dreamed of getting the golden ticket to Hollywood on the hit singing reality show American Idol. “I told her that I don’t think we are ready for American Idol; however, maybe we could get together and sing. This conversation ignited a fire within me,” Ellen says.

Gwen and Ellen began to brainstorm how they could make the dream come true for local singers who may not have the opportunities to audition but simply want to share the joy of music. Ellen knew they were onto something that would make a positive impact on adults with developmental disabilities. From her time as a church choir director, she was well aware of the power music can have and the sense of unity it can bring to a community. Ellen took her proposal for a new choir to the board where she found strong support. “Ellen approached the administration about the possibility of offering this as a weekly opportunity for those attending the adult services program, prior to privatization,” says Rhonda Schutte, community integration coordinator with Warren County Board of Developmental Disabilities. “She was quickly approved to offer choir practice and had no problem generating interest by many.” Through the universal language of music, Voices of Warren County was established for people to communicate across lifestyle, cultural and linguistic boundaries in ways they could not with ordinary words and speech. Music has the power to evoke deep feelings at the core of the shared human experience. “The most exciting feeling is watching some of the individuals who struggle with speaking during a conversation learn songs and sing out,” Ellen says. “Music is so therapeutic.” Throughout the past decade, Voices of Warren County has performed in many concerts for the community as well as several high-profile events. In 2012, the choir performed at the World Choir Games in Cincinnati in the “Popular Choral Music” category. Most recently, the group held its holiday concert alongside special guest Emily Hogeback, a bluegrass and country musician who was born blind. They also enjoyed performing on Dec. 1 as part of the annual Lebanon Carriage Parade and Festival. Locally, the group performs two concerts per year at the Warren C. Young Center in Lebanon, as well as many other shows at area schools, churches, festivals and retirement communities. All performances are free and open to the public, and the choir does not charge a performance fee to perform in the community. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this past spring, the choir recognized 12 members who have been with the choir since the beginning. The choir operates under the mission of the Warren County Board of Developmental Disabilities: Supporting people with developmental disabilities and their families to achieve what is important to them. “I love music and learning new songs. I like the friendships that I have made, and I love going out into the community to perform. I love my solo parts too,” says choir member Alexis Bodzin. Currently, at 30 members, the Voices of Warren County is looking to grow in 2019. The choir offers open enrollment in January and June each year for those interested in joining. Individuals do not have to audition for the Voices of Warren County; however, members are expected to attend rehearsals on Thursday nights as well as community events. As the group continues to grow in size, they hope to increase the number of performances in the community. “For me, the Voices of Warren County offers our individuals an opportunity to connect, to be part of something larger,” Rhonda says. “Our director is wonderful at identifying members’ individual strengths, even if it is for just a few powerful words in the midst of a song. Coworking centers have been on the rise in recent years, and according to Cincy Inno, it was predicted that in 2018, more than 2.3 million professionals worldwide would be utilizing this business practice. A coworking space is essentially a shared office environment where independent workers from a vast range of industries can pay to utilize the space consisting of personal desks, conference rooms and a number of amenities (cafes, gyms, Wi-Fi, etc.). It is an affordable space for the telecommuter, business owner or freelance worker who is tired of working from home or a coffee shop and wants to work in a social, energetic environment with others. Named for killer whales that work united in a pod, ORCA was born out of Self Sustaining Enterprises, a local nonprofit organization, and spearheaded by Aaron and Rachel Pitman in October 2017. ORCA currently offers two types of memberships: a monthly drop-in rate of $109 a month or a personal desk for $229 a month. Both include 24/7 access with a personalized keypad code. Those interested can also apply for a six-month or 12-month financial need-based scholarship to help jumpstart their business and increase revenue. From happy hours and game nights to a lecture series and more, ORCA frequently partners with the community and neighboring groups like the American Legion and the Mason Food Pantry. All are added bonuses of a membership. According to Bethany, ORCA Coworking is also a nonprofit organization, and some of its profit goes toward economic development in Jos, Nigeria, through self-sustaining enterprises. Moving forward, ORCA plans a major expansion by May 2019, moving the entrance of the building; enlarging the cafe; and building a huge front deck to be used for ORCA Market, a “hybrid offering of local crafts, artisan goods, food items and more,” Rachel says. ORCA has partnered with the City of Mason to bring more foot traffic into the downtown area and plan to have weekly events and live music involving Mason High School students. event. Parents of children looking to register should Karl Benz was the genius visionary behind the development of the internal combustion engine. But Karl was going nowhere in the early 1870’s because he was stuck with an unreliable business partner. Enter the beautiful and wealthy Bertha Ringer who saw genius, and found love in Benz. Not only did she marry Karl Benz, but she bought out the failing partner and blew new enthusiasm into his creative sails. Karl’s first car, the Model I, would run and move, but was a challenge to control. The car crashed during one of Benz’ first public demonstration runs. By the time Karl had developed the Model III he had worked out many of the kinks. It looked to be a truly drivable car but Karl lacked faith and balked at staging new public trials. It was Bertha who, at dawn on August 5, 1888, instructed her teenage sons to help her push the Model III out away from the house before setting out on a 65+ mile jaunt to visit with her mother in Pforzheim. On perhaps history’s 1st automotive joyride, Bertha left a note for her still slumbering husband. Along the way Bertha used a hat-pin to clear a clogged fuel line, recruited a blacksmith to repair a broken drive-chain, and talked a cobbler into lining the wooden-block brake shoes with leather strips to enhance their effectiveness on the steep hills she encountered. Many would have opted for the train on the return trip home, but Bertha fired up the Model III. In the end, her stubborn faith in Karl’s ingenuity provided the exact test the car needed and absolutely priceless successful publicity. By spring of 1889 the Model III was introduced to the planet at the Paris World’s Fair. Today, 130 years after Bertha’s joyride, Karl’s company thrives as a continued world standard for ingenuity, quality and safety. It may be my name on the wall at the dental office, but my wife and the women who make up my dental family are my hidden heroes. Who’s got your back?

ARTIST DOROTHY BURDIN ARE INTERPRETIVE AND REPRESENTATIONAL. The use of delicate brushstrokes and soft colors seem to reflect her personality. “I usually paint florals and landscapes,” Dorothy says. “Almost always what I choose to paint is from my travels.” She and her husband have traveled extensively abroad. Most recently, they traveled to Italy. Her current display at Pop Revolution Gallery in Mason showcases her favorite sights from their walking tours along the canals of Venice and hillsides of Cinque Terre. “I’ve been to Venice three or four times in my life now. It is one of my favorite spots in the whole world—just delightful sights to paint.” She’s also continuously working on a card series; the cards are printed from one of her watercolors. This year, she chose to paint a cactus blossom from a friend’s garden in California. Dorothy’s collection of paintings, from large gallery works to small greeting cards, are delightful and a beautiful contribution to Mason’s growing art scene. 34
