LIFESTYLE LETTER

An American Original: The Cowboy Hat

September 2026 PUBLISHER

Tyler Jackson | tyler.jackson@citylifestyle.com

Few things are more unmistakably American than a cowboy hat. It is the ubiquitous symbol of the American West. It represents hard work, adventure and a certain confidence that doesn’t require much explanation. John Wayne helped make the cowboy hat recognizable around the world. Will Rogers, Clint Eastwood, Gus McCrae and the Marlboro Man made it iconic. Shows like Gunsmoke brought the look into living rooms across America. Back in the day, it seemed pretty simple: if you wanted to be cool, you wore a cowboy hat. I come from a long line of cowboys, and the cowboy hat was always central to my heritage. My grandpa Raymond could have shown Gene Autry how it was really done. He was a cowboy through and through; he used to plow the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo arena with a team of horses. My uncles were racehorse trainers and feedlot cowboys. I have rodeo cousins that have made the National Finals Rodeo. For them, hats weren’t costumes or fashion statements. They were just simply part of everyday life. Beyond family, growing up in Dodge City meant the history and culture of the American West were never far away. Add in my love for PRCA ProRodeo, serving on the board of directors of the Kaw Valley Rodeo, and the host of the Miss Rodeo Kansas coronation, and it’s probably no surprise that I find myself wearing a cowboy hat often. Maybe it’s a small way of carrying forward something that was so familiar to the generations before me. Maybe it’s because there’s something about a cowboy hat that carries a certain presence and commands respect. Or maybe it’s simply my Americana showing. Whatever the reason, I like wearing one. It’s natural to me. Yet, plenty of people who would love to wear a cowboy hat never do. They worry they won’t look right in one, or that they’re somehow not “cowboy enough.” But wearing one isn’t something you have to earn. You just have to put it on. Like everything else in life, style takes confidence. Over time, it feels normal — with confidence, and maybe even some swagger joining alongside. Before long, you’re not thinking about whether you should wear a cowboy hat. You’re just wearing one. After all. That’s a good thing - the world could use a few more cowboy hats. Because this world sure needs more cowboys! Happy September!

STYLE WITH K-STATE SOUL AT REVTHREAD, HOPE AND BRETT FOLTZ ARE CREATING A K-STATE APPAREL SHOP ROOTED IN TRADITION, AND THE MANHATTAN GAMEDAY EXPERIENCE. ARTICLE BY TYLER JACKSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIM SIGLE | SIGLE PHOTOGRAPHY

For generations of K-Staters, shopping for purple has been a part of the gameday experience in Manhattan. Stores like Varney’s, Ballard’s and Wildcat Spirit weren’t simply places to grab a sweatshirt before kickoff. They had personality. They had history. And perhaps most importantly, they felt distinctly connected to Kansas State and the community surrounding it. Hope and Brett Foltz want Revelry Thread Co. to capture some of that same spirit, while creating something entirely its own for today’s K-State family. For Hope, the idea has roots in her own K-State experience. A graduate of K-State’s apparel marketing program, owning a store was something she had long envisioned. With young children at home, however, the timing wasn’t quite right for a traditional storefront. Instead, she started online, launching Revelry Thread Co., loving known as RevThread, in 2020 as a women’s boutique centered primarily around everyday clothing. Then came a few K-State shirts. During the company’s second year, Hope added just two or three gameday styles to the mix. The response was immediate. Those pieces quickly became some of the most popular merchandise she offered, providing a pretty clear indication of where RevThread needed to go next. K-State apparel was already familiar territory for the Foltzes. In 2017, they had opened CattyShack, an officially licensed K-State golf apparel store, giving them a foundation in licensed merchandise years before RevThread was born. With that experience already in place, RevThread began leaning more heavily into K-State apparel. As their children grew older and entered school, the Foltzes were finally able to make another long-held goal a reality, opening RevThread’s first storefront at 114 S. Fourth Street in 2024. If Hope brings the fashion background, Brett brings another layer of K-State history. An Abilene native and third-generation K-State graduate, Brett currently works for K-State Athletics. Together, their backgrounds have helped shape what they want RevThread to become: a local, unique shop with a K-State soul, created for people who don’t just cheer for the Wildcats, but consider K-State part of who they are. That means thinking beyond the standard collegiate T-shirt. Today, Revelry Thread Co. is settling into its new home at 316 Poyntz Ave., inside the former Manhatchet building. The expanded space offers women’s, men’s and children’s apparel, along with footwear, hats, jewelry, bags and gameday accessories, creating a true one-stop shop for K-State style. The looks featured throughout these pages show just how broad that style can be, from denim sets, dresses and tall Western boots to performance polos, children’s matching sets and, of course, plenty of purple in between. There is room for individuality, too. Clear gameday bags can become their own fashion statement through customizable patches, straps and accessories from the store’s Bag Bar. CONTINUED >

Increasingly, the Foltzes also want customers to find things at RevThread that they simply can’t find everywhere else. Private-label merchandise is becoming a larger part of that vision. RevThread’s women’s and children’s designs include pieces created under its Revelry Thread label, while Section 6 Clothier serves as its private men’s line. Unlike merchandise simply selected from another brand’s catalog, these products are designed with the manufacturer specifically for RevThread and finished with the company’s own sewn-in labels. Collaborations provide another avenue for creating something different. In February, RevThread partnered with Manhattan’s Outpost Western Store to launch the officially licensed Cowpuncher Willie Collection. The collaboration blends K-State tradition with Western style, with Outpost carrying men’s tees, crewnecks, hoodies and hats while RevThread offers unisex options, hats, and women’s pieces including a vest, cropped tee, and denim jacket. Now another collaboration is ready to make its debut. At the end of August, RevThread premiered Shalin Klein x RevThread, a custom collection curated by Hope and Shalin together. A K-State graduate and wife of Kansas State head football coach Colin Klein, Shalin brought a heavy influence of her own personal style and vision to the pieces, which are being created specifically for RevThread.

That willingness to create rather than simply stock merchandise may offer the clearest glimpse of where the store is heading. Even the physical space reflects the Foltzes’ desire to celebrate K-State history. Among the decor is a purple vintage truck tailgate Brett discovered in Missouri, and a desk once belonging to “Mr. K-State”, the legendary Wildcat basketball player, Ernie Barrett. They’re details that make the store feel less like a generic collegiate retailer and more like a space rooted in the stories and traditions surrounding K-State. For them, growing RevThread doesn’t mean abandoning that boutique feel. In fact, protecting it is part of the goal. They hope to continue expanding private-label merchandise, original designs and collaborations while maintaining the “vibe” and soul that make the store distinctive. To explain it, Brett points to some familiar Manhattan names: Rock-A-Belly, Little Grill, So Long Saloon, Lucha and Bourbon & Baker. They may differ in size, style and menu, but they share something difficult to manufacture: They just feel like Manhattan. That’s what Hope and Brett ultimately want Revelry Thread Co. to become for K-State fashion and soft goods: a business that could only truly belong in the Little Apple. A place to find the perfect gameday outfit, and perhaps, in time, another Manhattan spot K-Staters can say they “love full well.” Find Revelry Thread Co. at 316 Poyntz Avenue, and online at revelrythread.com > CONTINUED

A LITTLE B I T OU T L AW BANDIDAS COFFEE COMPANY MIXES COFFEE & STYLE, WITH FRESH PERSONALITY

ARTICLE BY TYLER JACKSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY KENNY WHITIS

24

LOCA L’S CH OICE | FO O D + BE VE RAGE

When Jessica Nelson and Ashley Vicencio started talking about opening a coffee shop, the perfect space had not yet appeared. Nelson remembers finding a note in her phone from 2024, proof the two friends had been imagining the idea long before they had a storefront. Jessica, owner of Tress Hair Boutique, and Ashley, owner of Sol & Bel, had already built businesses of their own. Their friendship included conversations about business, creativity and what was in their dreams. Somewhere along the way, those conversations turned into a shared idea: someday, they should build something together.

Then, the opportunity appeared right next door. The space Bandidas Coffee Company now occupies carries Manhattan coffee history of its own. At 1437 Anderson Avenue, it was the original home of Brothers Coffee, founded by Dave Ramero. Brothers Coffee now operates from a location inside the Edge District on Kimball Avenue, while Ramero serves as pastor at Relevant Church MHK. For Jessica and Ashley, the availability offered the chance to take a familiar coffee space and give it a new personality. That personality begins with the name. “We feel like we are the outlaws because we just kind of do everything a little bit differently,” Jessica said. Bandidas means “female bandits,” and the name became an easy fit for a concept blending cowgirl attitude, Spanish influence, and an independent streak. Both Jessica and Ashley have Hispanic heritage, and that influence carries through the branding, atmosphere and, especially, the menu. One of the shop’s defining ingredients is horchata, the traditional Mexican drink made with rice, cinnamon and vanilla. At Bandidas, it becomes the creamy milk base for the house Bandidas Latte, and also makes its way into the Horchata Matcha. Other signature drinks continue the theme, including Abuelita’s Mocha, made with espresso and spiced Mexican chocolate, and the Dulce de Leche Latte. The menu also includes playful creations such as the Berry Wanted Cold Brew and Berry Crema Matcha. Ashley developed the drink recipes from scratch, helping give the menu the distinct flavor profile the owners wanted. Then, there are the bagels.

Jessica and Ashley are longtime bagel lovers, and when they could not find the style they wanted locally, they decided to bring it straight from New York City. The bagels are made in the Big Apple, shipped the same day, then served fresh at Bandidas in the Little Apple. Choices range from plain, and everything, to blueberry, jalapeño red pepper, apple cinnamon raisin and rainbow. The bagels are then paired with house-made schmears such as plain, strawberry, cinnamon sugar and bandida garlic jalapeño. The early response surprised even the owners. Bandidas began by preparing roughly 60 bagels a day and quickly sold out. They bumped that number to 100 and sold out again. Before long, the shop was moving hundreds of bagels in a single day, with Jessica recalling one day when they prepared around 260 - an impressive response considering Bandidas had only held its soft opening on July 25. Some customers have even driven from outside Manhattan specifically for the New York-style bagels. The demand has already prompted requests for bagel catering for offices and events, although their immediate focus is just keeping up with the shop. CONTINUED >

25

While the bagels sure bring a buzz, Coffee remains at the center of Bandidas. The company roasts its own beans using an electric roaster, a newer technology Jessica says offers a more environmentally friendly approach. Her husband, Andrew, handles much of the roasting. The lineup currently includes a house blend and a decaf, with plans for rotating single-origin coffees, and retail bags customers can take home. Andrew also played a major role in bringing the building’s vision to life. Jessica and Ashley designed the interior themselves, while he handled the buildout of the bar, helping transform it into something distinctly Bandidas. Throughout, the Western-meets-Spanish style carries through to even the smallest details. Nelson first sketched the concept for the Bandidas logo before a Kansas City designer brought it to life, blending cowgirl spirit with Spanish influence. Even the shop’s neon sign gets in on the fun, featuring a playful bull with a bagel perched on its horn. Together, those touches capture the thoughtful, stylish personality of Bandidas Coffee Company, and its willingness to have a little fun along the way. Jessica Nelson and Ashley Vicencio are entrepreneurs and longtime friends who have built the company around a simple instinct: when they dream up something they wish existed, they are not inclined to wait for someone else to create it. “If there’s something we don’t have,” Jessica said, “we’ll just make it.” That entrepreneurial spirit can already be seen in Tress Hair Boutique and Sol & Bel. Now, it carries throughout Bandidas Coffee Company, from coffee roasted in-house and horchata-inspired drinks to New York-style bagels and a space unlike anywhere else in Manhattan. The result is unmistakably Bandida. Bold, stylish and, fittingly, just a little bit outlaw.

You don’t need to completely coat everything. Keep the drizzle fairly light, so it remains more of a crunchy snack than a heavy candy mix. 6. While the drizzle is still warm, sprinkle generously with white or purple sanding sugar. 7. Add the purple M&M’s and gently toss or scatter them throughout. 8. Let the mixture sit for about 20–30 minutes, until the drizzle has completely set. Break into pieces and serve in a big bowl, individual cups or little purple treat bags. 9. EMAW! Go Cats!
