LIFESTYLE LETTER
The Wealth of Winter
January 2026 PUBLISHER
Tyler Jackson | tyler.jackson@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R
January in Kansas doesn’t ask for much. The trees are bare, and icy breath hangs in the air. The recent holiday season fades into memory, as the Flint Hills slip into their cold, unbothered nature. And yet, in the deep hush of winter, this season offers one of the warmest and most overlooked gifts of the entire year: stillness. We often think of health as motion: more steps, more reps, more hustle. But winter reminds us that wellness also requires calm and tranquility. In fact, the healthiest version of ourselves isn’t built only by pushing forward, but by pausing with intention. Just as the natural world idles to prepare for spring, winter demands us to rest and reset, much like our favorite flowers before they can bloom. I know I’ve been moving so hard through the calendar these past few years that I’ve grown to truly appreciate the serenity of winter. It feels like this season finally gives me permission to breathe again. I get to slow my pace, quiet my mind, and return to routines that ground me. Winter offers a rare chance to rediscover what truly matters beneath all the noise of the growing season, and, really, it’s simply being still. January’s stillness allows us to appreciate life’s flow in a way no other season can. Without the rush of summer schedules or fall commitments, we finally have room to listen to our bodies, our minds, and the spaces in between. Health doesn’t have to be loud or dramatic. In winter, doing less often gives us more. It’s no wonder that this season echoes the beautiful reminder from Psalm 46:10: “Be still and know that I am God.” Winter invites us into an almost divine stillness. When we lean into the calm rather than resist it, winter becomes a partner in our wellbeing instead of an obstacle to endure. The truth is, health is the richest kind of wealth. And like any investment, it grows through steady, daily deposits that compound quietly over time. Winter simply gives us the best return on that investment. So this January, let the stillness work for you. Embrace the slow repetition. Honor the quietness. Spring will come in its own time, but your wellbeing begins now - in the peaceful heart of winter. Stay warm! Happy 2026!

Gray skies, brisk winds, and icy sidewalks. Add in the sun setting before many of us get home from work, and it’s no wonder that fitness-related New Year’s resolutions are often dropped by mid-January. But it doesn’t have to be this way. We know the benefits of regular movement: reduced stress, better sleep, increased mobility. As you embark on the new year, consider these tips for building or maintaining a consistent exercise routine despite the frigid weather. CONTINUED >

Start small at home. Stair climbing, yoga flows, and body weight training all count. You don’t need to be sore and exhausted for a workout routine to be effective. Take advantage of free resources. Fire up “Yoga With Adriene” on YouTube. Use your phone timer to time planks or wall sits. Utilize Nike Training Club, or another free app, to access training plans and workout ideas. Try “movement snacks” throughout the day. Break up long, sedentary periods with 5-minute sessions of stretching, walking, jumping jacks, or a bodyweight circuits. Here is a sample plan (follow each movement with 20 seconds of rest): 1) 10 push-ups (modified or wall push-ups work too); 2) one-minute plank; 3) 20 squats; 4) 20 lunges; 5) 20 tricep dips (next to a counter top); 6) one-minute wall sit. Set your thermostat to turn up the heat before it’s time to get out of bed. It’s much easier to get up for an early morning workout, instead of staying in your cozy bed, if you aren’t immediately freezing upon getting up! Prepare for the day ahead. Look at the weather forecast for the next few days to determine whether you want to exercise at home, head to the gym or fitness studio, or brave the outdoors.
“It’s much easier to get Orange Sky Yoga Barre Spin
6. Before going to bed, lay out your workout clothes, ideally next to a heating vent for maximum toastiness in the morning. 7. Layer up! Moisture-wicking base layers keep sweat off your skin, insulating mid-layers hold heat, and windproof outer shells protect you from the elements. Once you’re warm and comfortable, an outdoor stroll or jog does feel as intimidating. 8. Give yourself extra time to get ready. We typically move a bit slower in the winter – plus, putting on those layers takes time. If you’re heading to an exercise class, budget extra time to scrape your car (if needed) and find parking. 9. Join a group fitness class. There’s something about being around a group of people that gives you more energy. Fitness studios like Orange Sky Yoga offer warm communities that welcome both regulars and newcomers. Try yoga to improve your flexibility and breathwork, barre to build strength and stability, or spin to get your heart rate up. 10. Find a workout buddy. We’re far less likely to skip exercise when someone else is counting on us. 11. Pair movement with entertainment. Turn on a podcast like “The Dumbbells” or “Live Better, Feel More” while completing a bodyweight circuit. Watch a show while on the treadmill. Or, just turn on some high-energy tunes and bust a move. 12. Head to the mall. When it’s too cold or windy to walk outside for a prolonged period, head to Manhattan Town Center Mall for a warm space to complete some laps. 13. Take a short lunch-time walk. Generally, the temperature is highest between 1-3pm. A brisk 10-20 minute afternoon walk can give you a renewed sense of energy for the rest of the day. 14. On sunny winter afternoons, hiking the Konza Prairie is an amazing way to get moving. Remember to layer up, wear shoes with traction, and then take in the crisp air and golden tallgrass prairie. This is one of my favorite ways to reconnect with nature during cold weather.
up for an early morning workout, instead of staying in your cozy bed, if you aren’t immediately freezing upon getting up!”
15. Join the pickleball craze. Indoor pickleball through Manhattan Parks & Recreation can keep your heart rate up while staying warm inside. 16. Set small goals. Cold weather can make motivation harder, so set achievable goals, like 20 minutes of daily movement, a weekly step count, or 5 day workout streak. 17. Remember that chores count as exercise. Shoveling snow, scrubbing floors, or vacuuming can elevate your heart rate and keep your muscles working. 18. Stretch while watching tv. If the weather outside is dreary, fire up “The Chair Company” or “Severance,” and relieve some tension from the day with these five simple stretches: • Neck: Gently tilt your head toward one shoulder until you feel a stretch along the opposite side of your neck. Repeat on the other side. • Chest opener: Clasp your hands behind your back and gently lift your chest. • Seated Hamstring Stretch: Sit on the floor with one leg straight and the other bent. Reach toward your straight foot. CONTINUED >

• Cat-cow: On hands and knees, alternate arching your back (cat) and rounding it (cow). • Figure-four: While lying on your back, cross one ankle over the opposite knee and gently pull the bottom leg toward you. 19. Focus on the mental health benefits of movement. It takes awhile to see the physical benefits of exercise, but the mental health benefits are almost immediate. Movement increases mood-regulating neurotransmitters, releases endorphins, reduces anxiety, improves sleep, and even tempers the effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder.

20. Don’t let a bad day turn into a bad streak. Some days, between work, chores, and family commitments, you’re just in survival mode. Give yourself a break and start fresh the next day.

When it comes to staying active in the winter, remember that perfection is the enemy of the good. Five minutes of movement is better than nothing. Take in the winter sunlight when you can, and embrace at-home workouts when the weather is frightful. Finally, remember that every bit of movement you invest in now helps protect your mobility and quality of life as you age. You’ve got this!

On Manhattan’s east side, tucked into a low-slung plaza on South Port Drive, lies a health clinic that feels like a carefully tended home. Soft light, natural wood accents, and a warm, unhurried reception area set the tone: this is a place where people come not only to fix a symptom, but to be heard. In 2016, chiropractor Jessica Campbell opened Flint Hills Family Chiropractic with a simple and deeply personal mission: to provide patient-centered chiropractic care in an environment that honored each person’s story. As her practice grew, so did her vision of what healing

could look like when approached with intention and compassion. In 2017, chiropractor Kelli Nelson Greenwalt joined Jessica, bringing her own style and expertise to patient care. The two women quickly discovered that their philosophies aligned perfectly: they were both mothers who shared a passion for holistic well-being. For several years, Flint Hills Family Chiropractic served as a trusted home for patients seeking relief from pain, pregnancy-related discomfort, sports injuries, and the everyday stress that quietly settles into the body. But underneath the adjustments and appointments, something meaningful was taking shape.

Patients weren’t sharing just their symptoms, but also their stories. They talked about their sleep, emotional load, digestion, hormones, anxiety, and the pace of their lives. Jessica and Kelli listened, sensing a growing need for a more comprehensive, integrated approach to care. That realization ultimately led to one of the most significant transformations in the practice’s history. In 2024, Flint Hills Family Chiropractic officially became The Healing House: a full-spectrum wellness center designed to support the entire human experience. The new name reflects what the practice had already become in spirit. It was no longer
simply a chiropractic office; it was a place where people could come to feel seen, cared for, and supported in every dimension of their lives. Today, The Healing House is powered by a multidisciplinary team of women whose collective expertise allows patients to receive deeply personalized, collaborative care under one roof. Jessica continues to lead with the same grounded presence that has anchored the practice from the beginning. Still working beside her, Kelli provides chiropractic care known for its thoughtful approach, gentle precision, and ability to help patients move through pain with confidence and clarity.
“Our mission is to create a space where patients feel seen and supported, providing them as many options as possible” — Jessica Campbell
The practice expanded further with the addition of Natalie Hawkins, a highly skilled, concierge physical therapist whose work has become essential to The Healing House’s integrated model. Natalie specializes in dry needling, using it to treat chronic pain, muscle tension, nerve irritation, and movement limitations with remarkable effectiveness. Her expertise has taken her far beyond Manhattan as she teaches dry needling courses to healthcare professionals across the United States. At The Healing House, she blends dry needling with movement science, strength training, and rehabilitation to help patients rebuild their bodies from the inside out. Supporting the emotional dimension of healing is Sarah Siders, a mental health therapist who provides a space for individuals to process stress, anxiety, trauma, and life transitions. Her presence reinforces the clinic’s core belief that mental and emotional health are inseparable from physical well-being. Nutrition plays its own essential role in the healing process, and Leslie Allen, Registered and Licensed Dietitian and Physical Therapist, brings a functional, holistic approach to food. She empowers
patients to understand the connections between eating patterns, hormones, inflammation, digestion, and energy, helping clients build sustainable, nourishing habits from a place of knowledge rather than restriction. Rounding out the team is Gabrielle Dupree Fogle, an energy practitioner whose work supports the body’s subtle systems. Through techniques that address trapped emotions, toxins, energetic imbalances, and residual patterns from stress or illness, Gabrielle helps clients release what no longer serves them and reconnect with their natural state of balance. Together, this team creates something rare: a fully integrated care model where providers view health through a whole-person lens. Patients may come in for an adjustment and discover connections to stress, posture, emotional weight, nutrition, or unresolved tension. They leave with not only relief, but with a clearer understanding of their bodies and a supportive plan for moving forward. In less than a decade, The Healing House has evolved into more than a space where the journey to true wellness is infinitely supported. More importantly, it’s a place that just feels like coming home.
