I Am
PUBLISHER
Tyler Jackson | tyler.jackson@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R

Living in the Little Apple offers plenty of opportunities to focus on health and wellness, all while being part of a community that values connection and growth. Whether it’s enjoying a brisk hike at the Konza Prairie, ice skating in City Park, or taking a yoga class in Aggieville, our city is a hub for physical and mental well-being. But as we lace up our shoes or plan nutritious meals, there’s another tool we can harness for transformation: the power of “I Am” statements. Over the past couple of months, I have truly transformed my life through the power of I Am. Every morning, the first thing I do is say, “Thank you God, I am grateful for another day,” followed by telling myself, “I love you.” Then, throughout the day, I remind myself I am brilliant, I am the greatest magazine publisher, I am a winner, and more. I cannot overstate how incredibly important this practice is. It has reshaped my self-concept and the way I speak to myself, which, in turn, has reshaped how I show up for myself. Once you learn how to truly show up for yourself, then you can genuinely show up for the world. Research into self-affirmation practices show they help rewire our brain’s pathways to align with these truths, and they’ve been a game-changer for me. They have complemented my physical health routines with mental and emotional empowerment. I wrote an article this month on the Power of I Am that dives further into this practice. Try it for yourself. It just might be what you’ve been missing. With resources like Freedom Behavioral Health Systems and a variety of wellness programs nearby, the community provides endless support for both physical and mental health. Engaging in these local resources amplifies the affirmations’ impact, creating a feedback loop of positivity and progress that enhances their effectiveness. This new year, let’s all make health and wellness a priority—not just through our actions, but also through our words and habits. By integrating the power of “I Am” statements into our routines, we take an active role in shaping not only our personal journeys, but also the collective well-being of our community. In the Little Apple, where the Flint Hills stretch out in serene beauty and neighbors greet you with a smile, let your wellness journey begin with this simple truth: I am here to thrive. Happy 2025! Nutrient-Rich Dessert To The Rescue ARTICLE BY MEL BOBAN
SWEETS The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.
This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious. Combine: • 1 cup wheat flour • 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled • 2 cups oats • 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts

1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 tablespoons chia seeds 2/3 cup raisins Optional: chocolate chips as desired Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.
Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa. Add this mixture slowly to combine: • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter • 1/2 cup honey • 1 banana • 1 teaspoon vanilla Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.

WHEN IT COMES TO THE BASICS OF LIFE INSURANCE, WHAT ARE THE PRIMARY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TERM LIFE, WHOLE LIFE, AND UNIVERSAL LIFE INSURANCE POLICIES?
Basic differences, I always look at a term policy as though you’re renting a death benefit for a specific amount of time. A whole life policy I refer to as a ‘permanent coverage’ that will be there for your whole life. A universal product provides a death benefit that you need now whilst still building cash value and permanent coverage for later in life.

“ I’VE ALWAYS BEEN A FIRM BELIEVER OF ‘IT’S WHAT FITS YOU AND YOUR NEED BECAUSE IT’S NOT A ONE SIZE FITS ALL.’” WHAT ARE SOME FACTORS SOMEONE SHOULD CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING THE RIGHT POLICY TYPE?
Main factors are going to be your initial need. We look at your current debts: Do you have a mortgage? Do you have car payments? Do you have credit card debt? Then, what your income is, and then we add all that up. A question I will ask is, if something happened to you tomorrow, what amount of money does your loved one need in order to carry on living without any financial burden?
HOW DO PREMIUMS VARY DEPENDING ON AGE, HEALTH AND OTHER FACTORS?
The younger you are and the healthier you are, the better the premium will be. The premium will vary by product, so that’s why we encourage you to take advantage of locking in the low premiums whilst you’re young and healthy. This is incredibly beneficial to you in your later years. I always look at life insurance as guaranteeing your future insurability. By having something in place, you can do things with that policy later, or you can make changes without proving your insurability.
ARE THERE ANY POLICIES THAT INCLUDE LIVING BENEFITS SUCH AS PAYOUTS FOR CRITICAL ILLNESSES OR DISABILITY?
Yeah, there are those kinds of policies out there. We have our universal product that can provide living benefits. I think that’s one of the most under misunderstood factors of a life insurance product. With a universal plan, the life insurance is there for the now. I need $500,000 to take care of my family should something happen to me. But, I’m paying on this premium for awhile, and let’s say I get to 65, and I don’t need this $500,000 anymore. But, I’ve accumulated so much cash value in my policy now I can turn that cash value into a living benefit and the life insurance company will pay me a monthly income. So its living benefits are huge, especially. CONTINUED >

I think there’s been a lot of opinions formed on certain policy types. I’ve always been a firm believer of ‘it’s what fits you and your need because it’s not a one size fits all.’ What you need versus what the next person needs, the other people need—it’s completely different. It’s what matters to you, not what anyone else thinks.

Typically, we’ll have an idea if we’re able to take an application. If we are unable to take an application, then we have products within our brokerage department which could offer some coverage. But, we’ll always look. The underwriters will either come up with an offer of coverage or they’ll provide a denial of coverage. I always tell people to give it a shot; you’re not going to be out of anything. If you submit the application, you put one month down because all policies come with a 30 day free-look period. Even if you qualify, let’s say it came back and it was way high and you went, ‘you know what? No thanks.’ We’ll give you your one month back and you’re not out of pocket. Anyone that wants to know if they’ll qualify for coverage there’s only one way to find out.
WHY COME SEE ROB WILD, WILD AND ASSOCIATES LLC, AMERICAN FAMILY INSURANCE FOR YOUR LIFE INSURANCE NEEDS?
I take a lot of pride in finding out what is important. I don’t just want to throw numbers at you. It’s a big decision. I want to ask the thought provoking questions because there are so many people that don’t have life insurance, but have mortgages and children, and I don’t want to see anybody on a GoFundMe page for funerals.
WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO TO BOOK A CONSULTATION WITH YOU?
I’d say call us, which is the best way. Let’s set up a time to stop by and visit with us. I love talking to people. It’s the best. People should talk more to each other.

FROM SUNRISE TO SUNSET:
D a i ly P rac t ic e s t o Supp or t Ment a l Wel l-B ei ng SIMPLE PRACTICES TO CULTIVATE BALANCE, RESILIENCE, AND PEACE THROUGHOUT YOUR DAY
In today’s fast-paced world, prioritizing mental health is more important than ever. Just as we make time for physical fitness, nurturing our minds should become a daily commitment. From the moment you wake up to the time your head hits the pillow, there are simple and effective practices you can incorporate into your routine to promote mental well-being. Here’s a sunrise-to-sunset guide to help you cultivate a healthier mind and a happier life.
MORNING: Setting the Tone
ARTICLE BY KENNY WHITIS PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIM SIGLE | SIGLE PHOTOGRAPHY
Your morning sets the stage for the rest of your day. Beginning with mindfulness and purpose can boost your mood and resilience.
• RISE WITH GRATITUDE
Before reaching for your phone, take a moment to reflect on three things you’re grateful for. Gratitude rewires the brain to focus on positivity, improving overall outlook and reducing stress.
• HYDRATE AND NOURISH
Start your day with a glass of water to hydrate your body and a balanced breakfast to fuel your mind. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like nuts or seeds, support brain function and emotional regulation.
• MOVE YOUR BODY
Whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga, or a full workout, morning movement releases endorphins, reduces anxiety, and enhances focus. Even 10 minutes of physical activity can make a noticeable difference. The Little Apple has an abundance of trails that are perfect for simple walks.

• PRACTICE MINDFULNESS
Carve out 5–10 minutes for meditation or deep breathing exercises. These practices center your mind, improve focus, and equip you to handle challenges with calmness.
MIDDAY: Maintaining Momentum
As the day progresses, it’s easy to get caught up in stress and distractions. Midday practices can help you stay grounded and energized.
• TAKE BREAKS
The Pomodoro Technique—working for 25 minutes followed by a 5-minute break—can boost productivity and prevent burnout. Use your breaks to stretch, step outside, or simply breathe deeply.
• CHECK IN WITH YOURSELF
Pause midday to assess your mental and emotional state. Are
you feeling tense? Overwhelmed? Acknowledging these feelings without judgment allows you to address them effectively.
• EAT MINDFULLY
Lunch is an opportunity to practice mindfulness. Slow down, savor each bite, and focus on nourishing your body. Avoid eating at your desk or while distracted, as this can lead to overindulgence or missed satisfaction.
• CONNECT WITH NATURE
Step outside, even if only for a few minutes. Sunlight increases serotonin levels, while fresh air and greenery promote relaxation and clarity.
AFTERNOON: Balancing Energy and Productivity
Afternoons can bring energy slumps and mounting to-do lists. Here’s how to stay balanced.
• POWER NAP OR REST
A short nap—no more than 20 minutes—can recharge your brain and improve focus. If napping isn’t an option, a quiet moment with your eyes closed can be equally restorative.
• LIMIT STIMULANTS
Avoid excessive caffeine, especially late in the day. Instead, reach for herbal teas or water to maintain steady energy without jitters.
• PRACTICE AFFIRMATIONS
Positive affirmations can counteract self-doubt and cultivate resilience. Repeat empowering phrases like, “I am capable” or “I am at peace” to reframe your mindset.
• ENGAGE IN A CREATIVE OUTLET
A 10-minute doodling session, journaling, or trying a new recipe can provide a mental break and inspire a fresh perspective. CONTINUED >

EVENING: Winding Down
The evening is a time to reflect, relax, and prepare for restful sleep. Ending the day with intention can have a profound impact on mental health.
• UNPLUG FROM TECHNOLOGY
Set a “tech curfew” at least an hour before bed. The blue light from screens disrupts melatonin production, which can interfere with sleep quality.
• REFLECT ON YOUR DAY
Write down your wins, big or small. Reflecting on positive moments fosters self-acknowledgment and gratitude. If challenges arose, consider what you learned and how you might approach things differently next time.
• ESTABLISH A SLEEP ROUTINE Consistent bedtime rituals—like reading, meditating, or taking a warm bath—signal to your brain that it’s time to unwind. Aim for 8–9 hours of quality sleep, as rest is vital for cognitive function and emotional resilience.
• PLAN FOR TOMORROW
Prepare a to-do list and lay out clothes for the next day. This reduces decision fatigue in the morning and gives you a sense of control over your schedule.
ALL DAY: Key Practices to Carry Throughout • STAY HYDRATED
Water is essential for brain function. Keep a bottle with you and sip regularly. Dehydration can lead to irritability and fatigue.
• SET BOUNDARIES
Learn to say no to commitments that drain your energy and compromise your values. Protecting your time and energy is crucial for mental health.
20
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | L IF E + CU LT U RE
• PRACTICE KINDNESS
Small acts of kindness—holding the door, complimenting a colleague, or sending a thoughtful message—can boost your mood and create positive ripple effects.
• SEEK SUPPORT
Remember, it’s okay to ask for help. Regularly connect with friends, family, or a mental health professional to share your thoughts and feelings.
These practices may seem small, but their cumulative effect can be transformative. Choose one or two to start with and gradually add more as they become habits. Mental health is a journey, not a destination. By weaving these practices into your daily routine, you can build resilience, cultivate joy, and approach each day with renewed purpose and energy. Whether it’s sunrise, sunset, or any moment in between, every small step counts.
Start your day with gratitude, meditation, or stretching to set a positive tone. Stay hydrated, eat nourishing meals, and take movement breaks. Practice mindfulness during tasks and connect with loved ones. Prioritize fresh air, nature, or a hobby. Unwind with journaling or deep breathing to promote restful sleep.

Manhattan’s Heartland Dermatology Advanced skincare solutions for a healthier, glowing you at Heartland Dermatology in Manhattan. For nearly a half-century, Heartland Dermatology has been the hallmark provider of exceptional skincare across the state of Kansas. Founded in Northwest Kansas in 1977 by Dr. Wallace Weber, the practice was built on a foundation of advanced dermatological treatment paired with a personal, patient-first approach. What began as Heartland Dermatology in Hays, Great Bend, and Salina, has since grown into a powerhouse operation, serving 18 communities across the state and cementing its reputation for excellence. Heartland Dermatology was established at a time when dermatology was still an emerging specialty in many parts of Kansas. Dr. Weber was one of a few dermatologists in Western Kansas, and he envisioned a clinic that combined cutting-edge treatments with a warm, community-focused environment. Early on, the clinic earned a reputation for effectively treating complex skin conditions, from acne and eczema to skin cancer. In 2003, Dr. Weber retired and passed the baton to Dr. Matthew Shaffer, a natural leader who sought to modernize the practice while maintaining its core values. Dr. Shaffer, a native of Salina, subsequently opened a new clinic in his hometown, in addition to the two flagship clinics in Hays and Great Bend. This period saw the adoption of advanced medical technologies and a focus on expanding services to include cosmetic

dermatology alongside medical and surgical care. Over the years, Heartland Dermatology has attracted talented dermatologists who share Dr. Shaffer’s vision, which has allowed the practice to grow beyond its roots. Over the past two decades, Heartland Dermatology has embraced innovations such as Mohs micrographic surgery, laser treatments, and phototherapy, making it a leader in treating skin cancer and other chronic conditions. The clinic also began offering Heartland Aesthetica— cosmetic services such as Botox, fillers, and chemical peels, broadening its appeal to a diverse patient population. As Heartland Dermatology expanded its services, its leaders recognized a growing demand for dermatological services in underserved areas of rural Kansas. By establishing satellite clinics and forming partnerships with local healthcare providers, the practice became a vital resource for patients in both urban centers and rural communities. By 2018, the company started to vastly expand their reach.
This commitment to accessibility laid the groundwork for its acquisition of Manhattan Dermatology, a well-established practice that shared Heartland’s mission of delivering compassionate, high-quality care. In January 2024, Heartland Dermatology officially welcomed the clinic formerly known as Manhattan Dermatology into its family. This strategic acquisition brought together two trusted names in Kansas dermatology, offering patients an even greater range of services and expertise. Manhattan Dermatology, founded in the early 1990’s, had built a strong reputation in Riley County and the surrounding areas. Led by Dr. David Harden, and known for its skilled practitioners and friendly staff, the clinic specialized in both medical and cosmetic dermatology, including the treatment of skin cancers, acne, and psoriasis. The integration of Manhattan Dermatology into Heartland’s network was seamless, thanks to the shared values and patient-centric cultures of both organizations. Patients benefited from access to a broader pool of specialists and state-ofthe-art technology, while Heartland Dermatology solidified its presence in northeast Kansas. January 2025 marks a milestone in Heartland Dermatology’s journey: the first anniversary of its acquisition of Manhattan Dermatology, a step that further expanded its reach and impact while upholding its commitment to patient care. The one-year anniversary of this acquisition is a testament to the success of Heartland Dermatology’s vision. Over the past year, the Manhattan clinic has not only retained its loyal patient base but also attracted new patients seeking expert care in a welcoming environment. One of the key achievements since the acquisition has been the expansion of services at the Manhattan location. Heartland Dermatology invested in new equipment and training, enabling the clinic to offer advanced treatments such as Mohs surgery, which is the gold standard for skin cancer treatment. Its superiority over other techniques lies in the precise removal of an invasive tumor that may twist and tunnel under the skin, and remain unnoticed by the normal eye. The addition of Dr. Jace Rickstrew, a board-certified dermatologist and double-fellowship trained Mohs Micrographic and Reconstructive Surgeon has been a huge addition to Manhattan’s clinic. As Heartland Dermatology celebrates this milestone, its leaders remain focused on the future. Heartland Dermatology now proudly serves as the official dermatologist of K-State Athletics, providing top-notch skin care for Wildcats athletes. Heartland Dermatology also continues to invest in research and education, ensuring its team stays at the forefront of dermatological advancements. From exploring new treatments for psoriasis to expanding cosmetic offerings, the practice is dedicated to providing cutting-edge care while maintaining the personalized touch that has defined it for decades.

From its humble beginnings in Western Kansas, to its current role as a leader in Kansas dermatology, the practice has remained true to its founding principles. Across the state, they saw 120,000 patient visits last year, and had diagnosed nearly 10,000 skin cancers. The acquisition of Manhattan Dermatology is a shining example of this legacy in action. By bringing two exceptional practices together, Heartland Dermatology has strengthened its ability to serve Kansans with the care and compassion they deserve. As we look back on the past year and the many milestones along the way, it’s clear that Heartland Dermatology’s best days are still ahead. Here’s to another half-century of helping patients achieve healthy, beautiful skin and another chapter in a history that continues to inspire.

“I AM” DEFINES YOUR IDENTITY AND SHAPES YOUR REALITY; CHOOSE EMPOWERING WORDS TO UNLOCK YOUR POTENTIAL AND CREATE POSITIVE TRANSFORMATION.
THE POWER OF I AM 28

In a world overflowing with distractions and competing voices—both external and internal—two of the simplest words, I Am, carry extraordinary power. When spoken with purpose, these words can reshape thoughts,
confident begins to instill the belief of confidence within the subconscious. Over time, this belief can influence our actions, encouraging us to take steps that align with the confident person we declare ourselves to be.
“I AM SHAPES REALITY, TURNING BELIEF INTO EXISTENCE & DREAMS INTO BEING.” shift habits, and change lives. They serve as a bold statement of identity, intention, and belief. Embracing the power of I Am allows us to forge a deeper connection with ourselves and the life we desire to build. The human mind is a fascinating blend of conscious awareness and subconscious automation. While the conscious mind processes our immediate thoughts, the subconscious operates as the storehouse of our beliefs, habits, and perceptions. It doesn’t differentiate between what is real and what is imagined; it takes instructions and works tirelessly to fulfill them. When we say I Am, we are programming the subconscious mind. Statements that follow these two words are interpreted as truth, shaping how we view ourselves and how we act. For example, repeating I am
Conversely, negative declarations like I am worthless, or I am incapable also program the mind, but in detrimental ways. They create self-imposed limitations and reinforce feelings of inadequacy. Recognizing this dynamic is the first step toward reclaiming the power of I Am as a force for positive change. For example, instead of saying “I want to be successful,” a person might declare, I am successful. This shift from want, to claim, is pivotal. By affirming success as an existing truth, the individual begins to think, feel, and act as if success is already theirs. This mindset not only attracts opportunities but also creates a self-fulfilling prophecy through focused action. The concept of I Am transcends self-help, and enters the realm of spirituality and religion. In many

traditions, I Am is seen as a divine statement. In the Bible, when Moses asks for God’s name, the response is, I AM THAT I AM (Exodus 3:14). This declaration suggests that I Am represents the essence of being itself—a connection to the infinite and the divine. From this perspective, every time we say I Am, we tap into a universal creative force. Recognizing this can inspire us to speak and think with greater intention, knowing that our words carry spiritual significance. For many, embracing the power of I Am can feel unnatural at first, especially if years of negative self-talk have shaped their inner dialogue. The key is persistence and self-compassion. Start small by replacing one negative statement with a positive one each day. Over time, these small shifts create profound change. It really is that simple—and powerful! Every moment offers a choice: to use I Am to uplift or to limit. As you move through life, consider the power you wield with these two words. Speak them with intention, align them with your highest aspirations, and watch as they shape your reality. The power of I Am is the power to create. It serves as the bridge connecting who you are now to who you aspire to be. Use your I Am with intention, as it’s more than a statement—it’s your reality. Choose wisely, and you have nothing to lose but a world of possibilities to gain!
