One of the absolute greatest joys in life is getting out and exploring our wide, wonderful world. Exploration can begin in your own backyard, revisiting this beautiful town that we live in. Every day, there’s a new element of the Little Apple to discover. By foot, car, bike, or kayak - your imagination can always take you to new places right here at home. Maybe it’s walking around campus on a new sidewalk and looking at the historic limestone buildings from a different angle. (For me, this has been Ahearn Fieldhouse lately. I cannot get enough of that place!) Sometimes, it’s trying a new restaurant, or driving down a new street that you’ve never seen. Have you ever kayaked the Kansas River? That’s another landmark-laden experience in itself! This town is a gift, and it’s important to keep rediscovering it. Beyond Manhattan lies the great state of Kansas. From the trees and hills in the east, to the flat, high plains in the west, many gems are hidden in plain sight in the 82,000 square miles of the Sunflower State. Beyond Kansas is the most magnificent country, centered in the prettiest continent in the world. From oceans and mountains, to deserts and swamps, we really do live in a geographically diverse country, and nowhere is really difficult to get to. Beyond the USA is a great big place, teeming with fascinating people and cultures from corner to corner, and somewhere within it, you can surely find what it is that you’re looking for. But, what if really the best place to explore these days is within ourselves? Over the past few years, the world has been forced to change. It has obligated us to grow, to ask questions, to dig deep to find the true meaning of who we are and why we’re here. To say I’m the same person I was three years ago would be an inaccuracy. I’ve grown deeper in my faith, deeper into my passions, and deeper into self-discovery. That is exactly why and how this magazine came to fruition. Like I’ve said before: each page, each story, each photo, and even each ad reflects my heart and soul. It’s exactly what I had been seeking. Welcome to the April Explore issue. If you’re looking for an unforgettable day trip or a break on your way out to the Rocky Mountains, explore Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park and Monument Rocks. Little Jerusalem is a hidden gem of natural beauty and wonder, only opened to the public in 2018 after decades of private ownership. This geological wonderland has unique chalk formations that rise above the surrounding plains, forming intricate canyons and cliffs. One of the park’s most popular attractions is the 100-foot-tall Niobrara chalk formation, a testament to the incredible forces of nature that have shaped the landscape over millions of years. Visitors to the park can explore its magnificence by hiking, bird watching, or simply reveling in the vastness. Hikers can take several trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels, each offering a unique perspective on the park’s sublime beauty. The most popular trail is the two-mile loop trail that takes visitors through the heart of the park, offering stunning views of the Niobrara formation and the surrounding cliffs. Overlooks scattered throughout the park offer panoramic views of the breathtaking landscape.
The park also offers a handicappedaccessible parking area and a wheelchair-accessible trail that leads to a viewing platform overlooking a scenic view. In addition to its geological wonders, the park is home to a variety of wildlife. Visitors may spot prairie dogs, coyotes, and pronghorn antelope from the park’s trails and overlooks. Birdwatchers will be especially delighted, as the park is home to a number of rare and endangered species, including the ferruginous hawk and the mountain plover. Located just 25 minutes from Little Jerusalem, Monument Rocks are a grouping of towering rock formations made of sedimentary rock. Also known as the Chalk Pyramids, this site was the first in Kansas selected as a National Natural Landmark. The location is a popular destination among photographers, who come to capture the otherworldly beauty of the formations against the backdrop of the Kansas sky. When it comes to the economic vitality of an area, few things prove more instrumental than a reliable airport. The Manhattan Regional Airport, colloquially known as Fly MHK, has accelerated the growth of the Flint Hills region, and the time has come for a major runway reconstruction project. The airport’s longest runway - 3/21 was last extended, widened, and paved 44 years ago in 1979. In that time since, the 7,000 ft by 150 ft primary runway has seen a tremendous volume of aircraft: commercial and military jets, private aircraft, small charters, drones, and helicopters. Amid five daily flights to Dallas and
Chicago, consistent military traffic with Fort Riley, and over 150,000 passengers flying in-and-out of the airport in 2022 alone, Fly MHK has become the second busiest airport in the state of Kansas. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) currently requires airport pavement structures to be designed to support at least 20 years of aircraft traffic. Fly MHK’s preventative maintenance program has enabled the airport to far exceed this minimum requirement. With the current life of runway 3/21, and the crosswind runway 13/21 — a smaller, 5,000 ft x 75 ft airstrip — both nearing 50 years of age, it is imperative that this project happens soon.

The Kansas City-based company Clarkson Construction is taking on the project in four phases. Phase 1 began in September 2022 and was completed in March. This included tree removal, dirt work, site prep, and obstruction mitigation. Phase 2A and 2B began in March and will run until May 12, encompassing groundwork and the first removal of existing runway pavement. In Phase 3, the entire airfield will officially close and the intersection between the two runways will be redone. The crosswind runway will reopen on July 19, initializing Phase 4, which will see the finishing of utilities, plus the final touches of the project until August 31. For the new pavement, Clarkson Construction will use a technique called rubblization, which involves breaking up old pavement, while turning it into a fine, light base layer. It will then be smoothed out, and a stabilizing base, made of asphalt and concrete, will be placed. Above the stabilizing base, a third and final layer will be added. When finished, the new airstrip will average 13-14 inches in depth.

From May 5 until September 5, air service from American Airlines will be suspended, but the Fixed Base Operators (FBO) will be open, as will the airspace to helicopter traffic. Even though commercial service will not be running, the purchase of airline tickets from September 5 and beyond is currently ongoing and encouraged. To help pay for the $30 million project, the airport, which is owned and operated by the city of Manhattan, has accepted two federal grants. One is from the FAA, and the other is from the Defense Community Infrastructure Pilot Program. These two

grants will cover 90% of the costs, with the remaining $3 million to be covered by local sales tax funds. “What I am most excited about is getting it done, because I know it’s going to be disruptive for the community,” says Brandon Keazer, FLY MHK Airport Director. “This is the first time American Airline service has ever been suspended since it started in 2008. So getting through this project, having a brand new runway that can last this community for the next 20 or 30 years, 40 plus years, and then seeing the development that comes from that will be great.”
