Legendary head coach Bill Snyder famously summed up why Manhattan, Kansas is truly the best place to live on earth: “As I have stated so often, we came to Kansas State because of the people, stayed because of the people, and returned because of the people — and that remains unchanged.” It’s a gorgeous place with tons to do and see, but as he simply put, it’s truly great because of the people. I just hit year number 17 living in the Little Apple — nearly half of my life — and I completely understand what he means. Being honest, it did take a while. I was young and dumb, having arrived from Dodge City. Living here as a twenty-something, I had a lot of struggles living in this town. Being older has been so much better, thankfully. I kept grinding, sticking it out through many different opportunities to find my place here, and the one constant has always been the people. Each year, I’ve gained experience, my network has gotten bigger, and my connections have grown stronger and deeper. It culminates each month, with every new passing issue of this magazine. I feel like one of the lucky ones to learn deeply about the businesses and individuals that comprise MHK, and bring their perspectives to each article and ad. I hope the small lens we zoom into their lives, work, and businesses helps to bring the people of Manhattan closer together. Again, that’s what makes this place so great. The people. As you flip through the pages, we hope you’ll feel encouraged and connected to the people and businesses around you — in your city, neighborhood, and most of all — your home. The Castle on the Hill TAKE A TOUR OF MANHATTAN’S MOST ICONIC AND MYSTERIOUS HOME, THE KIMBLE CASTLE If you’ve lived in Manhattan for any length of time, you’ve probably wondered: Who lives in that castle on Poyntz Avenue? And why is there a castle in Manhattan? In 2019, Richard and Jennifer Foveaux saw the Kimble Castle listed for sale online. Jennifer, a real estate agent, was captivated by the unique character of home, even though she and Richard weren’t looking to buy at the time. The owners, Charlie and Kate Gillum, ended up deciding that it wasn’t the right time to sell. Over the years, she and Richard kept thinking about the castle. In 2022, they decided to see if the Gillums were ready to sell. “We always dreamed and prayed about it. We hoped that this was God’s plan,” says Jennifer. However, Charlie and Kate were not looking for just any potential buyer. The continued legacy of the home was critically important to them. They wanted to find successors who understood that owning a castle built in 1894-1904 requires both considerable maintenance and an appreciation for history. Thankfully, they found worthy successors in Richard and Jennifer.

Coincidentally, Richard and Jennifer have some commonalities with the original homeowners, Sam and Cora Kimble. “She’s a bit of a crazy plant lady,” teases Richard. It’s clear that Jennifer has a green thumb from the many vibrant plants adorning the home, including a towering Bird of Paradise plant by the family’s front door. Cora was also a plant lover and is considered the “Mother of Arbor Day” in Manhattan. She served as the caretaker for the land in Sunset Cemetery, planting many of its trees and shrubs. “She was more of a free spirit like Jen. [Sam Kimble] was a judge, so he was more black and white like me. I have a degree in Mathematics and a Doctor of Chiropractic.” As a judge and the local mother of Arbor Day, Sam and Cora may not seem like the most likely inhabitants for a castle. “Sam Kimble Jr. believed that an everyday person could live in a castle and could still be an everyday person,” says Richard. “Sam and Cora were kind, humble people, and they served the town with this home. They believed in the future of Manhattan.” When I ask the Foveaux family about their favorite features of the home, there are many: the elegant La Cornue range; the kitchen tile, reclaimed from a castle in Europe; and wine cellar, which is converted from the Kimble’s vault. Beyond all these individual features, Richard says the craftsmanship stands out. “The structure has stood the test of time,” he says. Those wanting to get a taste of Kimble Castle can now stay at The Loft, a stunning space with oak floors, stained glass windows, and a gourmet kitchen. Outside the Loft, guests can relax by the fire pit or take a stroll on the nature trail. “Even people who live locally will feel like they’ve gotten away,” says Jennifer. without them.” Her husband Jeff, a full-time taxidermist, also works in the studio. “I always tell people that I hit the jackpot when I met my husband,” says Ellen. “He has always encouraged and supported me, and he works hard to help with our projects as much as he can.” Ellen is almost equally as effusive when discussing her favorite woods. “I can never decide which is my favorite. I might say hackberry. Every piece is different: it has a variety of different colors and grains that come alive when you work with it.” After years milling and drying the wood themselves in Riley, Ember Woods has moved operations to Manhattan, and will use their own stockpile of local hardwood logs going forward. This pivot will enable the company to focus on custom furniture production. Ellen Goekler’s joy is infectious. As the owner of Ember Woods, she creates custom furniture and home décor items made of local wood and vibrant epoxy. Within seconds of starting our conversation, it’s clear that she’s found her life’s calling. “Nothing makes me happier than when we can fully realize an idea someone has and bring it to life,” she shares. She and her team work collaboratively with customers to design one-of-a-kind pieces. They keep customers involved throughout the design and production process to ensure they are happy with the final product. This leads to close ties between Ellen’s team and her customers. “By the end, they’re more like friends or family than customers.” Ellen is quick to praise the talent and creativity of her team of artisans: Else VandeGevel, Robert Whitaker, Nathan Scudder, and Bailen Brumfield. “We have a really good team. We have fun, we work hard, and we get along really well. I couldn’t do it

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? I came from a small farm community outside of Leavenworth, Kansas, graduating from Pleasant Ridge High School with 53 kids in my class. My mom was the principal at the middle school, and my dad was the vice principal at the high school. After graduation, I came to K-State in 2005. I quickly changed my major and graduated college with a Construction Science and Management degree with a minor in business.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO REAL ESTATE? In 2009 my boss at the time handed me a book called Rich Dad, Poor Dad. This one book changed the trajectory of my entire life. Unfortunately, it did take a little bit for me pull the trigger on quitting my job, but a whole lot of backstory led me up to April 13th, 2015 which was the first day I was unemployed and officially running my business. I showed up at my new brokerage, scared as hell, but also super excited and said, “Okay, let’s get started”. I do have to give credit my amazing my wife Mallory. I thank God every day for her because quite literally, there’s no way I would’ve been able to do this without her. The amount of support and belief in me and what I can do is unparalleled.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT REAL ESTATE? As cliche as it sounds, helping and educating families. Real estate can be a scary thing for most people. But that fear comes from the unknown. So one of the ways I really try to help families is by walking them through the process and educating them.

THE LAST FEW YEARS HAVE BEEN WEIRD. HOW’S THE MANHATTAN MARKET LOOKING RIGHT NOW? This is the big question right now. I truly believe, in my opinion, that the market is always good. The question really is who is it good for? As of today, I believe it is good for both sellers and buyers. Our market is

slowly changing, but that is part of it. That is what the real estate market does. That all being said, the market really doesn’t matter when it comes to you and your family’s needs. What I mean is, what are your needs right now? I know when my wife and I sold our house and moved into our current one, it wasn’t because we wanted to move, it was because we had to. In reality, the best time is when it is right for you. Over time, real estate has proven to appreciate if you take care of it.

WHAT IS SOME ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO A FIRST-TIME HOME BUYER? Do your research and educate yourself. There are so many platforms and people available to help you. Then find a guide, a coach, a Realtor© that you trust will help you and guide you through the home buying process. You know when somebody’s listening to you, and when someone’s not. Find that agent who is going to listen to your concerns, wants and needs to find you the right home for you. Education and knowledge of this process is everything.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEBODY LOOKING INTO BUYING A SECOND HOME, RENTAL INVESTMENT, OR A VACATION PROPERTY? I’m going back to education. Educate yourself on the market, your numbers and what returns are you looking for. Then know your strengths and weaknesses. For example, if you’re not good at swinging a hammer, or if you are not good at understanding numbers, then you need to find someone that can help you with that. Buying investment properties is one of the most fulfilling things you will ever do and it is an amazing opportunity to build wealth. I truly believe that everyone should own real estate. The difference is that everyone’s “team” will look different as everyone’s strengths and weaknesses are different. CONTINUED >

A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone. When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TAKING THE COUNTER MATERIAL UP THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

WARMING UP THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

CONTRAST, CONTRAST, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.

Brooke’s Pro Tip: I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.
