I’ll never forget that sinking feeling, sitting in another bank, and hearing yet another “no.” For the first time since my dear friend, Ryan Ross, planted the seed about starting a magazine, I really didn’t think it was going to happen. Everyone told me I was crazy for this dream anyway, and I nearly listened to the world and gave up. Thankfully, my sister Taylor reminded me that this was absolutely God’s plan for me. With a little assistance from her, I drained my bank account, cashed out a 401(k), quit my job, bought the franchise, and landed on the path that led me to writing this letter for you today. Proverbs 3:5-6, indeed. Before I had even officially started, I could envision that first issue. Legendary head coach Bill Snyder would be on the cover, featured in an article I would write myself. Sitting in the Snyder family suite at the stadium that bears his name for the interview in November of 2021, I knew that I was on the right path! It’s been nothing short of incredible since then. To keep the magazine in print, and completely free of charge, it must be advertiser-supported. We started with 23 businesses. Those 23 businesses, and individuals behind them, believed in me enough to lend their support without even having a magazine! I will be eternally grateful for each one of them, and all the others that have joined us since. Shoutout to my day one Editor, Heather Hoffman. She puts in a lot of time and effort into this magazine, and she is great at giving a voice to places and people that wouldn’t have one otherwise. Thank you also to our staff photographer Tim Sigle. He is so talented. His pictures are clean and crisp, and each photo tells a story. The locker room was chock-full of thick, celebratory cigar smoke. Confetti & empty Dr. Pepper bottles were strewn across the carpet, as loud music was barely audible over cheers and hollers. The Indianapolis Colts were getting impatient, needing the space for a game the next day against the Dallas Cowboys, but the current revelers didn’t seem to notice their concerns. The Kansas State Wildcats had just defeated the previously unbeaten Texas Christian Horned Frogs in overtime to win the Big 12 Championship, and time was standing still. Each person was sporting a smile above their royal purple championship t-shirt, and nobody’s grin was bigger than that of quarterback Will Howard. Born on September 24, 2001 in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Will grew up an entire world away from the Flint Hills of Kansas. The son of Bob and Maureen, and the eldest of four children, he had a happy, modest, and rather unique childhood. As an infant, he couldn’t sleep very well, so Maureen, a pediatric physical therapist, used her professional knowledge and
instincts as a mother and invented a cutting-edge “sleepsuit.” It helps transition babies from a swaddle, and provides a cozy and secure sleep environment. It worked so well for Will that she started making the suit for her other children and friends, and then, with the encouragement of Bob, they went on to co-found Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit in 2008. A natural athlete, Will’s first love wasn’t football, but basketball. At Downingtown West High School, he excelled at both. In basketball, he was on the all-area team and member of the 1,000-point career club. In football, he led his team to the state semi-finals his senior season and was named the Maxwell Football Club Pennsylvania Player of the Year. His journey to Northeast Kansas from the greater Philadelphia metro was rather fortuitous. Being proactive about his recruitment, he would send direct messages to coaches on Twitter, eventually sending one to Kansas State’s Conor Riley. Coach Riley didn’t initially respond, so a few months later Will sent him another message, telling him about
a throwing event he was doing at his high school. Coach Riley quickly returned his message, mentioned he liked what he saw on film, and wanted to chat on the phone. Later that day, Will talked with both Coach Riley and Coach Collin Klein. They then wanted to get his tape in front of Coach Klieman. One thing led to another, and the following day, Coach Klieman called and offered him a spot. An official visit was scheduled for that spring, and Will, alongside his dad and brother Ryan, made their way to the Sunflower State for the very first time. Kansas State had everything Will wanted – a pure college town, great campus, fantastic college programs, and a noticeably positive vibe of the local people. The only thing holding him back was the distance from home, an 18-hour drive. However, with the encouragement of his family, he took a leap of faith, and became a Kansas State Wildcat. Arriving in the Little Apple on January 16, 2020, the future was bright for Will Howard. Having enrolled early, he was looking forward to his first semester of college. Due to the pandemic, he ended up with half of CONTINUED >

“IT’S NOT ABOUT PROVING ANYONE WRONG; IT’S ABOUT PROVING MYSELF RIGHT” -WILL HOWARD
a semester, no spring game, and didn’t return to Manhattan until the summer. “It was a weird time, but it honestly kind of timed out well for me, personally,” he says. “I was homesick that first year, and as much as it didn’t help me on the field to not be there, or to not get the spring ball reps, it was the most time I had spent with my family in years. After that, I was ready to get back.” Going into his freshmen season, his goal was to make the travel squad, and work his way up the depth chart to backup Skylar Thompson. He would quickly make his first game appearance in the season opener against Arkansas State. When Thompson went down with a season-ending injury against Texas Tech a few games later, suddenly, Will was QB1, and starting the next seven games. “I don’t want to say I wasn’t ready for it, but it was definitely a little premature,” he says. “I felt like I was ready in the moment, but now looking back at it, how in the earth did I manage that? It’s a complex system, and I was more worried about what we were doing offensively. Now that I know it like the back of my hand, I can look at the defense more, and dissect what they’re doing. We pushed through. It was tough, but I learned a lot from that year. It taught me more than I could ever ask for. Those on the field experiences were invaluable, and it’s really the only way to learn.” A lot of work behind the scenes, soul searching, and persistence has led to much better days at Kansas State for Will Howard from the first two seasons into his third. Will had every reason to transfer, but he stayed, stuck it out, and things have been seemingly going his way ever since. “It’s not about proving anyone wrong; it’s about proving myself right,” he says. “I was confident in myself and throwing the ball to where it needs to go. I was just glad to finally go out there and get an opportunity to show it. I’m super thankful that the coaches, through all those bad
times, kept their trust in me. I’m thankful I was able to prove myself right and prove my teammates right as well.” That confidence showed on the field this season in not just Will, but everyone around him. It culminated with the Big 12 championship, and a trip to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl against storied Alabama. MHK PLAY STUDIO AND PACHECO BEEF ARE BUILDING COMMUNITY AND CONNECTION IN THE FLINT HILLS

Wrenn Pacheco and Kasey Wilkinson are making life easier for parents. The two entrepreneurs have each started new businesses since the onset of the pandemic: In 2021, Wrenn and her husband Arturo opened their family ranch, Pacheco Beef, which provides local, handcrafted, pasture-raised beef. In 2022, Kasey opened MHK Play Studio, an inclusive space for kids to explore science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) through play-based learning. Kasey and Wrenn connected through Public Relations extraordinaire and K-State Strategic Communications Assistant Professor, Danielle LaGree, and the small business owners immediately saw the potential synergy in their offerings to families. In November, Sip + Snack was born, a gathering space at MHK Play Studio where families can enjoy locally-sourced snacks, including Grazing Cups, featuring Pacheco Beef summer sausage, Alma cheese, and veggies.
Additional offerings include frozen Pacheco Beef hot dogs, ground beef, kebabs, and family-friendly steak cuts, so parents can pick up dinner while their kids play. The response for the partnership has been immediate. “It has been our most successful purchase,” says Kasey. “Parents try [Pacheco Beef] at Sip+Snack and then say, ‘I’m going to go buy some for home!’” For both women, community and connection are core values, which sparked an instant kinship. “As women entrepreneurs, it’s important for us to support other women.” says Wrenn. “We have both been on a rollercoaster ride as small business owners. Kasey has been such a cheerleader for me.” “We share the same values. In a transitory community with the university and the military, making connections and building relationships is especially important,” says Kasey. For her part, Wrenn has been working to build community through events at the Pacheco Beef House in Alma. “When people break bread together, that opens the door for communication,” says Wrenn. The Pacheco family hosts multiple events at their storefront each year, including classes on cooking the perfect prime rib and homemade tortilla making. A native of New Mexico, Arturo comes from multiple generations of tortilla makers, and he’s now passing on this craft to the next generation in the Flint Hills. Arturo and Wrenn, both lifelong ranchers, are already passing along their love of ranching to their sons, ages six and nine years old. In addition to helping on the ranch, their boys both love visiting MHK Play Studio.

In designing MHK Play Studio, Kasey wanted the space to be an inclusive community for kids to learn and play. “Not all parks are inclusive to students of all abilities, so it was important to me to have items to meet children of all abilities.” In the past three years, kids have endured disruptions to their daily routines due to the pandemic, social isolation, and Zoom fatigue. The space provides a much-needed community for children to learn through inquiry-based and play-based learning. “Learning through hands-on experiences is so much more valuable than rote memorization. So many students on IEPS [Individualized Educational Plans, required for students in Special Education] are thriving,” adds Kasey. Serving as a resource for parent education has also become a priority for MHK Play Studio. Kasey, who has a Master’s of Science in Early Childhood Education from K-State, has assembled a team of staff with degrees in Education, Human Development, and Family Studies. From managing a little one who’s not sleeping well to dealing with a picky eater, Kasey seeks to provide helpful information to families, and to connect them to outside resources. Kasey’s advice on what’s helped her as a small business owner is as relevant to parents as it is to entrepreneurs: “Lean on mentors and your community. Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our three tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love. A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.
1. USE REAL ESTATE WISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.
2. ORGANIZE BY KIND AND COLOR Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.
3. UPGRADED HANGERS The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:
