LIFESTYLE LETTER
Futility U.? Nope.
January 2023 PUBLISHER
Tyler Jackson | tyler.jackson@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Heather Hoffman | heather.hoffman@citylifestyle.com
To quote Marshall Mathers: “If you had one shot, or one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted in one moment, would you capture it, or just let it slip?” Standing in AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas at the Big XII Championship game, there was an overwhelming sense of calm, even well before kicker Ty Zentner strolled onto the field with a smile on his face to kick the game-winning field goal in overtime. Sure, everyone’s palms were sweaty, knees were weak, and arms were heavy. Someone in that place surely had made a mess on their sweater already from Jerry’s spaghetti! It was certainly exciting and nerve-wracking, but yet — there was that calm. We knew why we were there. It was destiny to win that championship. This team was different, and it was a long time coming. They believed they could do it! I recently re-read the Sports Illustrated article from September 4, 1989 titled “Futility U.” It came out at the beginning of Coach Snyder’s first season – and the tail end of a terribly long losing streak. While we were indeed the Worst Program Ever In College Football History, and what was written was quite true, that article didn’t lend much hope. It didn’t give much hope for the future of K-State football, Kansas State University, or even Manhattan, Kansas. As we know the rest of the story by now, it’s apparent the real answer laid within ourselves. It started with believing. What was needed was someone to truly believe they could do it. What that program — and Manhattan — needed was Bill Snyder. He believed he could do, and he made everyone else around him believe it was possible to turn this thing around. Then he proved it. Fast forward nearly 34 years later and this K-State team — and really, this football season as a whole — reminds one of the fighting spirit of Manhattan itself. Little, but mighty. Nationally, not given much thought. At times, we’re our own worst enemies. But, to know where you're going, you have to know where you've been. Like Ty’s kick, we know exactly where we’re headed: up and through it all! It just starts with believing! These are special days in Manhattan. Don’t take them for granted! Happy 2023, my friends. Enjoy issue #12! We made it a full year — more on that next month! Thanks for reading! Warm Regards,

BOOST YOUR FINANCIAL WELL BEING ARTICLE BY HEATHER HOFFMAN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Tips from Edward Jones Investments
For this interview, we spoke with Catherine McKinley and D.C. Hackerott at Edward Jones Investments. The additional advisors in the Manhattan area are Matt Paquette, Mark Ewing, Doug Springer, Bill Wolf, Gage Zierlein, Emily Surritt, Joel Phipps, Sarah Pacheco, Adam Greenwalt, Kerri Spielman, Allen Reid, and David Nelson. Edward Jones, Member SIPC.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A FINANCIAL ADVISOR? There are many tax laws and regulations that are always changing. A financial advisor dedicates their time to know all these changes. We help clients reach the goals that are most important to them.
HOW CAN I FIGURE OUT MY FINANCIAL GOALS? One of the first things I do when I meet with a client is ask, “What is most important to you?” As we’re working through that, I try to uncover what types of steps they’ve already done. Do you have an emergency fund built up? Are you utilizing your employer’s retirement plan? Are you taking full advantage of the match that they offer you there? We’re trying to help them find different investments that can supplement the needs that they have to meet in reaching those long-term goals.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP MONEY SAVING TIPS? Set up a recurring automatic contribution to an investment account so that you’re becoming disciplined

in your investments. Sometimes people think, “Oh, well I’m just going to pay off all my house and put all my money into that, and then I’ll invest.” But, if you delay your investing, you’re losing the time that you need to build those savings. I would say my best advice is know what you have, live within your means, and then be disciplined on the amount that you’re saving. Prioritize what you’re saving.
WHAT’S UNIQUE ABOUT EDWARD JONES? We all have the same training, but we all try to focus on a certain type of client. You can truly find someone that you mesh with, and you connect with. And then ideally that advisor would partner with you for your lifetime.
EDWARD JONES REALLY IS FOR LIFE, ISN’T IT? That would be our goal. I really hope that when I’m no longer here that people look back and recognize that I was someone who did truly care about them as a family, as a person, and that’s why I wanted to see what was best for them.

Tips from Edward Jones Investments
1
| Create a budget:
Take an average of your total expenses from the last six months, and divide that by six. That should be a good estimate of your monthly bills. Then live within your means.
2
| Have an emergency fund:
It’s a good idea to have three to six months of income saved, or a year’s worth of income if you’re retired. This allows for down-market years.
3
| Manage debt:
Take on new debt only when needed. Having a lot of debt causes stress now, and that stress magnifies long-term.
4
| Utilize employer matches:
Utilize employer matches: Getting the most out of employer accounts is one of the best things you can do when planning for retirement.
5
| Supplement with other
investment strategies: Whether saving for retirement, paying off debt, or needing extra spending cash, supplemental income can help you achieve financial goals quicker.
6 | Make sure your estate plan is in order: First, look at your beneficiary designations on all your accounts and insurance. Have a list of your estate assets, devise a plan, have goals, write a will and consider a trust, and anticipate future financial decisions. JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/M A N HAT TA N

ADVICE ON DECORATING WITH PLANTS AND KEEPING YOUR HOUSEPLANTS THRIVING THROUGH THE WINTER WITH TYLER CATES FROM BLUEVILLE NURSERY
ARTICLE BY HEATHER HOFFMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIM SIGLE & PROVIDED

H OW TO | HOM E + D ESIGN
Blueville Nursery’s Ty l e r C a t e s WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE HOUSEPLANTS TO BRIGHTEN UP A SPACE DURING THE WINTER? African Violets and Christmas Cactus have beautiful blooms. You can kind of force some things to bloom, while others have a mind of their own and bloom when they want. I’ve had African Violets bloom all year long. Really, anything that adds color is great. Beyond that, Snake Plants and ZZ Plants are nice because they’re low maintenance.
WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS OF HOUSEPLANTS? They can brighten up your space and bring green inside. They’ll certainly brighten your mood. They’re fun, especially if you don’t have pets. They can be your pets, or your own little hobby to keep you occupied and happy.
HOW CAN YOU MAKE SURE PLANTS GET ENOUGH LIGHT IN THE WINTER? Plants will go dormant in the wintertime. They won’t drop dead like the plants outside and lose all of their leaves, but they will slow down and quit growing. So, they don’t need as much light. We have grill lights, or artificial lights, you can buy to supplement their light. Grill lights are specifically designed to provide the UV rays that plants need, on different spectrums and different levels. They mimic the sun, which is different than fluorescent lights. We also have specific light bulbs that you can put into a fixture. This time of year, my plants are set on timers, for about 6-8 hours a day. In the spring and summer time, I usually set them for around 12 hours a day. I usually try to set them to adjust with the natural sun.

Golden Pothos
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I WATER MY INDOOR PLANTS IN WINTER? I say you’re looking at every 10-14 days. Like I said with the light, they’re going dormant, so they’re also using less water. So, just keep them barely moist. Let them dry out, and then give them water again.
SHOULD I FERTILIZE HOUSEPLANTS IN THE WINTER? No, I would wait until spring before I resumed any fertilizing.
DO YOU SET PLANTS OUT IN THE SUMMER? I don’t personally, because I don’t have the space. But, you certainly can. Just make sure they’re not in direct, full sun because the sun can scorch a lot of things. In summer, they can get some bright light, but not direct.
Bird of Paradise and Snake Plants
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE TIPS FOR DECORATING WITH HOUSEPLANTS? I like doing sets of threes. I have one spot in my home where I have the same pot, but three different sizes: small, medium, and large. Find what fits your personality and style. There are all kinds of pots and planters to choose from. At Blueville, we have different garden stakes that have little gnomes on them, or little creatures that hang off the side like turtles or hedgehogs. They can help spruce up your pot.
WHEN IS YOUR BUSIEST TIME OF YEAR FOR HOUSEPLANTS? January and February are actually our biggest months for houseplants. We offer 20-30 different species of indoor plants. We get a lot of houseplants in, but they go super fast!

Early 2000's OSMC Providers
The Greatest Comebacks Begin Here The Forty Year History of Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center ARTICLE BY TYLER JACKSON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
OSMC Providers, 2023
26
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S
When most people hear the phrase, The Greatest Comebacks Begin Here, they generally think of their sports team trailing in a ballgame, or a grand rebuttal from the receiving end of a joke. In Manhattan, Kansas, however, this saying has become synonymous with Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Center. Dr. Richard B. Baker first came to Northeast Kansas in the mid-1970s by way of active duty in the United States Army. Upon completion of his service in the military, he was asked to open a practice in Manhattan, where he first began in Building A of the Medical Center at College & Claflin Avenues. While also serving in the United States Army himself, Dr. William T. Jones began moonlighting with Dr. Baker, as he was still serving as a staff orthopaedic surgeon at Fort Riley. Upon completion of his military service, Dr. Jones, alongside Dr. Baker, formed Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center in the summer of 1983. With humble beginnings, the original office had space enough for only one doctor. While there were two providers, it generally worked out well because one of them would be in the office, while the other would be in surgery. A few years later, Dr. Allan D. Holiday joined the practice, and again they were able to work around the minimal space, this time by hosting satellite clinics outside of Manhattan. In 1991, plans for building a new office at 2600 Anderson Avenue were finalized, and for obtaining a secondary office space to accommodate patients and physical therapy in the Colony Square building on Poyntz Avenue. A third office near campus was opened in the mid-1990s. More providers — Dr. Hinkin, Dr. James R. McAtee & J. Chad Joyce in Physical Therapy — joined OSMC, and
it became apparent a new, centralized facility was needed. With clinics occurring in three separate locations, and doctors and staff traveling in between them, the new building would be able to serve all patients’ needs from just one location. Plans for a new building were drawn up, ground was broken, and the new & current building at 1600 Charles Place opened in October of 2002. Dr. Peter T. Hodges joined that same year. After many years of service, Dr. Baker retired from OSMC in 2003. As Kansas State University’s first designated team physician, he provided four decades of service to KSU student-athletes, serving all teams, and donating 20,000 hours of service during his tenure. Thanks to Dr. Baker’s early efforts, OSMC still serves as the official team physicians of K-State Athletics to this day. Dr. Bryce A. Palmgren joined the practice in 2006, followed by Dr. Adam J. Chase four years later. Also in 2010, further expansion began by both remodeling and the finishing of previously unfinished areas of the building. This renovation created additional space for added providers and more capacity for physical therapy. Dr. Trevor R. Gaskill joined the clinic in 2015, followed by Dr. Heidi J. Smith in 2020. Dr. Jones retired in June of 2020 after 37 years of service, with Dr. Hodges following suit the next year. 2020 would also see the completion of a brand new, standalone physical therapy building on the east side of town at off Highway 24, at 8231 Positano Drive. Dr. Nicholas Duethman is the most recent doctor to join, and everyone else remains to this day. Forty years after Drs. Baker and Jones began in that small clinic, Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Center has grown from just two providers to twelve. Physical therapy has grown from a small space in downtown
“We’re all about the patient experience, and part of that experience is providers. Physical therapists, nursing physicians, and our advanced practitioners that are skilled and current in their area of expertise. So you’ll get the most cutting-edge technology and the most cutting-edge treatment options. And because of that, I think that’s why people come to us and, and why they continue to come to us.” -Dr. Jamie McAtee

“I would have to say the thing I’m most proud of here is the longevity,” -Dr. Jamie McAtee Manhattan to an entire floor, and a subsequent dedicated building. The future is bright at OSMC thanks to their high standards of continuing education, practice of current surgery techniques, and nonsurgical treatment options. Another key to the practice’s success is its consistency. “I would have to say the thing I’m most proud of here is the longevity,” says Dr. McAtee. “We’ve been here for 40
years and we’ve been able to maintain a culture and attitude of caring, and all of our missions and values have been maintained for a long time. So that longevity lets us be able to maintain the quality of care and the positive work culture for our staff and positive clinic care for our patients. With all of that, the patient experience gets maintained, and I think that’s difficult to find.”

LEGGINGS 3 WA Y S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS
Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.
BRUNCH A FTER BA R R E Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. Don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.
MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing.
SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist and added fur-lined high tops to provide practical footwear.
Snag some of the key details of the outfits here!
