LIFESTYLE LETTER
Home Is Where The Heart Is In many ways, Manhattan is a special place, especially in the transient nature of the community. Between K-State and Fort Riley, people tend to shuffle in and out quickly. The fugacious spirit of Manhattan can feel like a mixed blessing, as new friends can leave too soon. However, it also means that people from all around the country and the world have had the privilege of calling the Little Apple “home.” From the Kaw Native American tribe before us, and sports legends Jackie Robinson and Joe Louis who lived together on Yuma Street while stationed at Fort Riley, to an incredible list of homegrown townies and K-State alumni, we have a long and storied history of great people calling Manhattan home. While I think the current community is the best it’s ever been, some great people have said goodbye to this town! From students and soldiers, to folks just temporarily passing through, a lot of people do leave, but they take the spirit of Manhattan with them wherever they go. There’s a reason Rally House sells a shirt that says “I Miss Manhattan.” So, let’s never forget where we are, and the fact that Manhattan is a great place to call home. This town is incredible! In a world that can be cruel, our town is a place where we build each other up. We can make continual efforts to spread love, teach with love, correct with love, and express love every day. We are that place! We can walk into the store and expect a friendly smile and hello. We can walk down the street and not feel unsafe. We can always find a helping hand. This town is a gift on so many levels, and I know I’m grateful to be here. I know you are, too. With all of that being said, March is our Home issue. This month, we get to see gorgeous before-and-after photos of a Manhattan home renovation by Ross Lignitz. We head down to the ’ville to see what’s happening at Taco Lucha! We’ve got some fun Spring Break ideas for you -- both around town and across Kansas. Then, we’ll take a trip to Waco, Texas and Magnolia to meet Garden Director and K-State alum, Brooke Garcia! She’s doing big things, and certainly misses Manhattan herself! We have it so good here! It’s Home! Hope you enjoy this issue!

TAKE A SCENIC DRIVE THROUGH THE FLINT HILLS TO COUNCIL GROVE FOR AN UNFORGETTABLE DAY TRIP ARTICLE BY KENNY WHITIS PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIM SIGLE
When searching for a day trip, take a scenic, 40-mile drive through the Flint Hills to Council Grove. On the banks of the Neosho River, Council Grove features a stunningly beautiful downtown with great shopping. The Wooden Spoon is a quaint and cozy shop, with gifts from Kansas and the Flint Hills, and an eclectic mix of things you can’t find anywhere else. “We try to source as much from Kansas as we can,” said owner, Cami (Wooden) SanRomani. “Food items, gift items, things like that. We try to make assortments that appeal to everybody.” Whether you’re looking for relics for a lake house, adding to your Kansas wardrobe, or searching for a gourmet snack, The Wooden Spoon is a must stop. 202 W. Main Street. thewoodenspooncg.com Weathered Wood Home is a modern and attractive boutique, featuring apparel, artisan gifts, and home accents. “These items oftentimes are like antiques,” said owner Lindsey Forge. “Everything is unique and one-of-a-kind.” She adds that most of the items are handcrafted. “Our spa goods are handmade in Lincoln, Nebraska. Our candles and even our baby clothes are artisan, actually.” They also offer a subscription-box service. “We curate six items every quarter that go along with a theme or the season. It’s just our way of bringing our brick and mortar boutique to you.” 204 W. Main Street. Weatheredwoodhome.com In a building that was built in the 1890s as a livery stable, founders Jesse & Deidre Knight, Joshua & Lindsay Gant, and Pat Atchity, put years of malty dreaming to hoppy fruition with Riverbank Brewery. “The lavender in our ‘Lavender Magic’ is grown locally at the Flint Hills Lavender Farm,” said Deidra. “The jalapeños used in ‘Swift Kick’ came from Grove Gardens, and the English Malt came from Kansas Malt, also right here in Morris County. We take pride in using as many locally-sourced ingredients as possible.” Riverbank Brewery, 13 W. Main St. riverbankbrewing.com

“Starting an indoor jungle is a sensory experience. It’s a way to heighten your senses and become more attuned to nature.”
For this article, we caught up with K-State graduate, yoga teacher, and Magnolia Garden Director, Brooke Garcia about creating an indoor jungle for your home.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY DON’T HAVE A GREEN THUMB? In taking care of plants, you have to cartwheel past your comfort zone. There is a learning curve for everyone. There is a lot of perseverance in nature. Despite you almost killing it, it may come back. That’s such a cool lesson to learn from plants. Give yourself grace. You’re dealing with another living species.
WHAT PLANTS ARE GOOD FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NEW TO TAKING CARE OF PLANTS? The pothos plant is really responsive. When it’s not getting enough sunlight, it’s going to have yellowing leaves. When it’s dry, you can see it’s wilted. It’s a good plant to learn plant communication from because it will teach you. The Chinese Money Plant, Silver Satin, Chinese Evergreen, ZZ Plant, Ponytail Palm, Snake Plant, and Monstera are all good starter plants.
HOW WOULD YOU CREATE AN INDOOR JUNGLE? HOW WOULD YOU DESIGN A SPACE WHERE THE PLANTS ARE THE FOCAL POINT? When designing with plants, you must first assess your lighting sources: where are the windows in the space? There’s going to be low light to high light, direct light to indirect light. Lighting will often determine where and how you place your plants. You have to get to know your plants. Understanding the needs of each plant will help you place plants in the right location. Once you’ve determined lighting needs, height and size become variables that are fun to experiment with. Statement, focal plants look best in a corner. On shelving, have a combination of upright and trailing plants. Make sure that upright plants have enough space to grow. I think it’s fun to have some really long trailers come from the top shelves, and some lighter trailing plants on the middle shelves. Trailing plants look great on top of a coffee table too. A lot of tropicals can be indoor plants, which can add to the jungle element.

Unique planters can add a fun element to your design
HOW DO YOU SAVE PLANTS THAT LOOK LIKE THEY’RE NOT THRIVING? Assessing the situation and looking at the symptoms will help you become a plant expert. I always think about the acronym “W.I.L.D. - Water, Insect, Light, Disease” • Water, water, water! Underwatering or overwatering is oftentimes the #1 issue. • Insect presence may often be the culprit of plant decline. I suggest using neem oil on a regular basis to proactively reduce and/or prevent pest pressure. • Lighting will oftentimes play a huge role in plant health. • Disease / fungal issues may be an issue if the plant is being overwatered, such as root rot.
DOES TALKING TO PLANTS REALLY HELP THEM THRIVE? Plants are incredibly responsive, and I like to believe that sending good energy to your plants is better than nothing! If it makes you happy, then why not?

The Story of
Taco Lucha Manhattan’s foremost taco experience revolutionized Aggieville
Nearly a decade after opening So Long Saloon in December, 2001 and establishing it as a renowned Aggieville staple, the proprietors of the prized establishment determined they wanted to expand their culinary horizons to South of the Border. Taco Lucha, which opened in November, 2011 and shares a building (and kitchen) with So Long Saloon, isn’t exactly what the restaurateurs initially envisioned when they decided to venture into a new frontier. Originally intended to be a “taco truck inside a building” -rather, a taco stand with six bar stools -- ultimately became the format and layout that is beloved today.

Taco Lucha is a quaint & cozy cantina, featuring indoor bar, booth, and high-top seating, as well as a year-round patio. The walls and shelves are adorned with luchadores (find your favorite Manhattan celebrity behind the mask!), and the colorful mix of funky décor lends a warm, inviting vibe to the spot. Since its founding by Randy Buller, Rob Goode, Julie Haynes, and Jason Humes, Taco Lucha has enjoyed an almost cult-like following - secret menu and all! Celebrated for its atmosphere and delicious fare, Taco Lucha is also known for the consistency of its high-quality service and food. “We make everything here, and right when you order it. Every meat, for every taco. All the salsas and toppings. We warm every tortilla,” said managing partner, Travis Worrel. “We literally make every single thing from scratch.” To kick off your Taco Lucha experience, you can choose from the impressive list of specialty drinks, including margaritas with hand-squeezed lime and the Mexi-tini, and select from more than two dozen labels of tequila. Locals love the legendary “Nancy,” a Busch Light draft beer with pineapple juice. At Taco Lucha, an appetizer is a meal prerequisite. If you’re looking a starter that’s a notch above chips and salsa, a must-try is Queso Fundido, made from melted fontina cheese, roasted poblano & onion, and savory house-made chorizo. The Chipotle Raspberry & Black Bean Dip, a recipe borrowed from sister restaurant So Long Saloon, is another local favorite. If you’re not feeling overly-chippy, try the mouthwatering jalapeño poppers, which are char-grilled over an open flame, wrapped in bacon, stuffed with cream cheese, and served with homemade chipotle raspberry sauce.

After appetizers, there’s something for everyone, whether your appetite is small or grande. If you’re looking for lighter fare, the Grilled Ensalada, headlined by a fire-grilled romaine heart, will leave you stunned at how fantastic a salad can be. If you’re seeking something that really fills you up, try the Stacked Enchiladas! A stack of layered corn tortillas are interlaced with cilantro lime crème, roasted poblano peppers, meat, cheese, and pico, and covered with pork chile verde. When it comes to the tacos, you really cannot go wrong with any choice! The Carnitas, Tinga, and El Mexicano tacos reflect traditional tastes, while the Black & Blue, Slayer, and Buffalo tacos showcase contemporary, unique favors. The best way to find your favorite taco is to try them all with a different meat each time. If you really want to change it up, try out one of the Especiales, where you’ll always find something unique and fantastic. Each Tuesday is Peanut Butter Taco Tuesday! Taco Lucha gets and stays pretty busy, so your best bet to get seated quickly is to show up early for mealtimes and to have your full party present once you arrive. If you consider yourself to be a true Taco Luchador, then of course, you know about the Lucha Secret Menu, right? What’s on the secret menu?! Well, it’s a secret. Hint: It’s out there! Go look for it!

COURTESY OF JILL & STAN MYERS AND ROSS LIGNITZ CONSTRUCTION Kitchens sell homes. But, for Jill and Stan Myers, putting their house on the market was the last thing on their minds when they decided to renovate their kitchen. Their foremost thought was to create a space where they could host their large, close-knit family for holidays and celebrations. Their kitchen, where Jill has cooked up many a feast, has served as the gathering place for family occasions. Ross Lignitz is a native Manhattanite and third generation general contractor. In
2011, he founded Ross Lignitz Construction, where he assists homeowners in creating a vision for their dream home or renovation. He works hands-on with his team to make those dreams a reality. For the Myers’ renovation, Ross and his team began by gutting the existing kitchen and removing two bedrooms and the laundry room. After adding a 450 square foot addition to the home, his team relocated the kitchen to take advantage of the new space.

The remodeled kitchen now features quartz countertops, handcrafted cabinetry from Custom Wood Products, and hardwood floors from Canterbury Floor and Home. The kitchen island features a mix of materials: the white quartz is anchored by the walnut wood of the base. The centerpiece of the new kitchen design is the stunning poplar nickel gap ceiling, which gives the kitchen a bright, airy feel. In addition to the kitchen remodel, Ross’ team created a mudroom, enlarged the dining room, and built a large, partially covered deck.
Ross’s biggest advice for homeowners looking to start their own renovation? Don’t rush. “The initial vision can completely change by the time you get to the final product,” Ross says. The company schedules out projects up to ten months in advance, and Ross says that many people refine their vision between the original ideation stage and the finished design. “It is really rewarding helping people custom design their homes from the initial meeting to seeing the final product.” After all, there’s no place like home.
