Men very often get tangled up in their “male role” as the breadwinner and order giving with little time or attention to emotional involvement. When we devote editorial coverage to the many nonprofits in our community, we more often than not interact with the women who fill many of the leadership roles. When we interact with Ventura county Big Brothers Big Sisters, it thrills me to see the enthusiastic men involved with that organization. I would like to now change the focus of my male role discussion and briefly address male behavior toward women in a 21st century society that is coming to grips with centuriesold male behavior that treats women like objects rather than equals. The #MeToo movement is not political. It is the modern American net result of centuries of abuse.

19th century feminist? Clearly, he was. Esmeralda, an emancipated woman if ever there was one, was objectified and destroyed by a lustful Dom Claude Frollo when she did not submit to his will. It was tragic and unambiguously critical of how men and society treated women. Have things changed that much since 15th century Paris? Well, yes and no. Women are no longer burned at the stake as witches, but it takes a loud and raucous movement like #MeToo to bring attention to modern abuse.

ON LOCATION The Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art at Pepperdine University presents “On Location in Malibu 2018: Paintings by the California Art Club,” through July 29. The seventh in a triennial series that began in 1999, the exhibit features more than 70 paintings of Malibu created by artist-members of the California Art Club (CAC), the oldest continually operating artist association in the state. The current members include many of the best realist artists in the state. Members were invited to visit Malibu during this past year and create art specifically for this exhibition. Encouraged to use their creative imagination, some chose to paint overlooked places of exquisite beauty. Others looked at familiar landmarks, such as Malibu Pier or Point Dume, but captured them in unique ways. Each artist has his or her own stylistic approach, creating works that are stunning reminders of the rare beauty of Malibu. DOGGONE FUN Summer Fest kicks off the season for families and pets. Held Sunday, June 24, from 12-4 p.m., at Malibu Bluffs Park overlooking the Pacific, the festivities highlight spectacular music, cuisine, family games and contests, along with a variety of activities for dogs. Making a Difference The Philanthropic L aw y e r Brett Bjornson “IT IS WHAT IT IS.” HOME: Pacific Palisades, 18 years. VOCATION: Estate attorney and Partner at Gorman & Miller. PHILANTHROPY: Beverly Hills Estate Planning Council; Santa Monica Bar Association; Los Angeles Bar Association; Past Chairman, Planned Giving Council at the Lucile Salter Packard’s Children’s Hospital at Stanford; Rotary Club of Pacific Palisades; Access Books. CHILDHOOD DREAM: A priest. I’d always wanted to help families navigate challenges. MENTORS: The most influential are my wife and children—they have taught me so much! REWARDS: “Service before self.” It is the greatest feeling to know I have made a difference in someone’s life. With Access Books, we have refurbished libraries and given books to Los Angeles inner-city schools. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing the look on children’s faces when they receive a brand-new book for the first time! ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Completing law school in my 40s and passing the BAR. After years of working as a tax specialist, I finally made the decision to move into a “Double Black Belt.” FUTURE: To work less, retire and spend more time with my family. COMMUNITY: When I walk the dog around the corner and look at that view over the Palisades Bluffs, it is the most beautiful sight I have ever seen. It never, ever gets old. I’m filled with immense gratitude every single time!

That’s the challenge we all face in this era of “fake news.” HOME: Pacific Palisades, since 1972. Vocation: “Retired” editor of the Palisadian-Post; current editorial adviser for the Palisades News; Friends of the Palisades Library board member. PHILANTHROPY: I began coaching our kids, Alan and Allison, in soccer, baseball and softball; my wife became active in our local schools. Today we support journalism nonprofits and Human Rights Watch; Pam is director of the HRW Student Task Force in 15 high schools. CHILDHOOD DREAM: A journalist, especially a newspaper sports reporter. MENTORS: Howard Hurlbut, the challenging and inspiring adviser for the University of Redlands college newspaper. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Working as a reporter/ editor at Life Magazine for seven years, writing 16 nonfiction books, serving as editor of the Post for 20 years, raising civic-minded children and sharing 50 years of marriage with Pam. REWARDS: I have enjoyed working with other concerned residents on community campaigns, while striving to defend and improve our quality of life. We have enjoyed success, and I feel more connected to our town and its residents. Future: Stay involved with family, including four grandkids; visit friends and relatives in far-off locations. Fun: Reading, without worrying about any deadlines or jobs around the house; attending Alan Chapman’s classical music class in Brentwood. PHILANTHROPY: Founded the nonprofit Malibu Aquatics Foundation in 2016 to promote and foster the development of aquatics programs, youth education and water safety. This year, the Foundation provided financial aid to children who cannot afford aquatics programs, developed an adult swimming program and fundraised for a score board in Malibu. CHILDHOOD DREAM: To be an Olympic swimmer like Matt Biondi and Pablo Morles or a rock star like Peter Frampton. MENTORS: My father and Steve Hotchkiss—my father is a pillar in my life and taught me the importance of working hard and sticking to your word. I consider Steve to be my Malibu dad—he has helped with my business, with becoming a lifeguard and the Foundation.

EVERYTHING THE MALIBU ROTARY CLUB DOES IS FUELED BY THE FOUR-WAY TEST: IS IT THE TRUTH? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? “We hope to influence our youth for a better future and also to think globally,” says Bianca Torrence, president of the Malibu Rotary Club. The goal of the club is to inform the community about the powerful network of Rotary International and the six areas of focus, which are: peace and conflict prevention/ resolution; disease prevention and treatment; water and sanitation; maternal and child health; basic education and literacy; and economic and community development. On a local level, “We really care about our youth,” Torrence says. “We support the Boys and Girls Club, we have a talent competition for the middle school and high school, and we started a scholarship program.” Three past winners have gone to New York to the Juilliard School of Music. “We also sponsor a couple of high school students every year to participate in a leadership camp, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, an intensive leadership camp that allows Rotarians to demonstrate respect and concern for youth while recognizing, encouraging and educating youth leaders,” Torrence says. This camp gives youth the opportunity to develop their skills as effective and responsible leaders while having fun and making connections with peers throughout the Rotary District. “We feel that we are people of action with high ethical standards, doing service to better our communities for a positive impact,” Torrence says.

To that end, the Malibu Rotary Club conducts efforts throughout the year, including a Halloween fundraiser, hosting a booth at the Malibu Chili Cook-off, presenting a Veterans Day event and being present at the Malibu Art Festival. “We are very involved with the community,” Torrence says. “We also award a scholarship to one recipient for the Fire Academy.” Additionally, “Malibu Rotary Club started providing the Thanksgiving dinner for the homeless and now many churches are doing it.” In other efforts, the Malibu Rotary Club provided all the content for United Nations Peace Day in the fall of 2017; organized forums for all City Council candidates for Malibu; and also had public forums for the Malibu and Santa Monica School Boards. The Malibu Rotary Club also supports the Malibu Community Assistance Resource Team, which is working with homeless issues. Currently, “we are supporting the youth Boys and Girls Club Wellness Center and high school scholarships,” Torrence says. Additionally, “we are currently working on raising awareness for
