“Ben, I Just Want to Say One Word to You: Plastics.” “The Graduate,” 1967 MAJOR THEMES FEATURED IN OUR MAGAZINES THIS MONTH INCLUDE ECOLOGY, CLEAN ENERGY, ORGANIC AND HEALTHY EATING AND SUSTAINABLE LIVING…BASICALLY “LIVING GREEN” AS MUCH AS WE CAN. At a time when environmental protections have, among many things, shown great results in cleaner air here in Southern California (I still remember my kids complaining of chest pains when they played outside on smoggy days), there is increased pressure form polluting industries to halt or even reverse those gains. Since we are a community magazine and apolitical in our editorial approach, perhaps we can focus locally on impacting the planet a little less and treating ourselves with a bit more care. Eliminating plastic bags in stores in California (although 10 cents for a paper bag really annoys me) and plastic straws and utensils in Malibu may not sound like much, but it really is a big deal. Think of all the plastic debris that gets into the ocean and our waterways and the damage it does to that environment. So maybe today’s Benjamin may not have such a great future in plastics. Is eating organic food better for you than dining on pesticide-coated veggies or a feedlot steak filled with antibiotics and hormones? “Duh!!!” as Homer Simpson would say. If we place solar panels on the roof of our house, will it look not quite as good as before?

Although Bedner retired from HBA seven years ago, the acclaimed designer says that he has never been busier, juggling a series of new projects ranging from luxury hotel and condominium developments in Miami, Hong Kong and the Philippines, to a revolutionary new modular hospitality/dwelling concept that he recently unveiled at his design studio in Malibu. Bedner explained that he and his partners, Mohan Joshi

and Breeze Giannasio, had been researching modular units globally for several years when they encountered an innovative Australian unit, the “G-pod,” that maximizes space and creates an innovative, affordable, luxurious, but transportable dwelling that’s simple to set up and comfortable to inhabit. The team has spent the past two years refining a new prototype that they can adapt, especially for the hospitality industry. “We call her ‘Soli,’ because she’s a solar-powered solution that we believe can solve many dwelling and hospitably needs,” Joshi explains. Giannasio adds, “With a few alterations Soli can be a guest house, holiday home, artist, design or Yoga studio. She can even fill in as a granny flat, a home office or even a bar, minicafé or pop-up store.” For individuals who need extra space, Bedner adds, “Soli is particularly appealing because it doesn’t require building plans or years of construction and the unit can be located anywhere you can place a Park Model RV.” SUSTAINABLE LIVING As excited as Bedner and his team are about the dwelling possibilities for Soli, they are even more interested in how the units can be used in the hospitality industry, especially in recreational vehicle parks where they provide a new level of luxurious living for up-market clients. Soli is able to withstand most fires and just about any weather, including hurricane force (up to Category 3) winds and floods. The prototype sports an elegant deck that pops out of a fireproof, watertight container, expanding to two and a half times its original size.
