MORE THAN 15 YEARS AGO I MADE WHAT FOR ME WAS A VERY RARE BELATED (IN JUNE) NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION. It was one that thousands of middle-aged people make: “I’m gonna get back in shape.” The epiphany for me was when we were celebrating my daughter’s graduation from Brown University— what should have been a great time was a struggle. I felt miserable physically, and while not suffering from a debilitating illness, I was just tired, with aches and pains in my back, knee and shoulder—all the result of too much “good living.” Good being defined as too much food, wine, travel and an all-around couch potato lifestyle. When I got back to California, I joined a gym. I also signed on with a trainer. What I discovered was that because I was basically healthy with good cardio health, I had let that cover up my general deterioration. I could not take any credit for the cardio part—good genes took care of that. The deterioration was all on me taking

for granted what had been a fairly athletic body and letting it go. LAYOUT DESIGNERS

Now all these years later, I continue to drag myself out of bed 90 minutes earlier than is necessary for my work and go to the gym. I do this almost every day and will do so for as long as I can. My workouts are not really about the vanity of looking good. They are about my increased stamina for work and play, overall strength and knowing that I can run around like a fool and play the tickle monster

For almost two decades, the Youth Development Staff have been there for thousands of youth, mentoring them and helping them navigate the challenges that come with growing up. “Although it’s been a long-term desire of our club to offer more formalized wellness services for our population, only five years ago were we given a window of support to actualize this need,” Earnest says. Through one of the club’s funders, the Pacific Youth Foundation, “we were introduced to the Social and Emotional Wellness Initiative, which provided the BGCM with Master's of Social Work Interns and their supervisors to provide support and counseling at the Clubhouse,” Earnest says. Once the services became available, it was like opening

up Pandora’s Box. “Our kids were begging for more support and we knew we needed to do more,” she says. “Thus we began the process of seeking out the financial support to have a new building added to our current Teen Center footprint, as well as developing the plan for Wellness Center staff and interns.” The recent reality of the Wellness Center was made possible through a grant from the Ludwick Family Foundation, which provided funds to purchase the modular building and construction; Taslimi Construction Inc., which managed the building project pro bono; the City of Malibu, who for the past three years has financially supported the Wellness Center programming; and most recently, the Brent Shapiro Foundation for Drug Prevention. Today, the purpose of the Wellness Center is to equip youth with the coping skills to manage their personal challenges and trauma, and to build self-worth and confidence—now and in their future adult lives. “We have too many youth who contemplate suicide, who don’t respect themselves, their bodies or their ability to make a positive impact on others or in life in general,” Earnest says. “We need to work together to support youth by increasing their social and emotional intelligence, letting them know we are here for them and that they are valued, loved and respected.” The ultimate goal of the Wellness Center is the same as the goal of the Boys & Girls Club: save lives, she adds. “We want our youth to do more than just thrive,” Earnest says. “We want to enable them to reach their full potential as caring, contributing, productive individuals.”

PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY KICKS OFF THE NEW YEAR WITH AN EXCITING LINEUP OF MUSICAL PERFORMANCES AT THE LISA SMITH WENGLER CENTER FOR THE ARTS AT PEPPERDINE’S MALIBU CAMPUS. Serving as an arts hub for the community, the Center links professional guest artists with Pepperdine students and more than 50,000 patrons annually. OPENING ACT First up, on January 10, the Ezralow Dance Company mingles contemporary dance with playful humor, provocative ideas, striking visuals and "a fine-scaled, gutsy energy" (New York Times). Artistic Director Daniel Ezralow leads performances that transport audiences to a new dimension with an explosive blend of extraordinary creative fantasy and dramatic emotion. EzralowDance.com GUITARIST FROM DOWN UNDER Two-time Grammy nominee Tommy Emmanuel, one of Australia's most respected guitarists, and singer/guitarist J.D. Simo shake it up midweek, Wednesday, January 17 and Thursday, January 18. With a repertoire spanning pop, jazz, blues, gospel, classical, flamenco, and aboriginal styles, Emmanuel’s passionate and infectious performances delight fans worldwide. His shows feature his new 16-track collaborative album Accomplice One, scheduled for release Friday, January 19, with guest artists Jason Isbell, Mark Knopfler, Rodney Crowell, Jerry Douglas, Amanda Shires, Ricky Skaggs, David Grisman, and more offering a unique take on indelible classics and new originals. A world-renowned guitarist, songwriter and singer, Emmanuel is known for his complex fingerstyle technique, energetic performances and use of percussive effects on the guitar. Emmanuel began playing the guitar at age 4, joining his family's touring band just two years later. Following high school, he became one of Australia’s

most in-demand rock musicians, playing guitar in a succession of bands, including one of Australia’s best-known acts, Dragon. He also worked as a studio musician, playing on recordings for Air Supply and Men At Work, as well as thousands of commercial jingles and tunes. In the 1980s, he embarked on a successful solo career, releasing over 30 studio albums and intersecting with some of the finest musicians in the world. TommyEmmanuel.com THE “PRAIRIE MYSTIC” On Sunday, January 21, folk singer-songwriter Carrie Newcomer, accompanied by pianist Gary Walters, brings her intimate, introspective performance to Smothers Theatre. Described as a “prairie mystic” by the Boston Globe, Newcomer is known for her “deep, rich alto and penchant for exquisite melodies” and interweaving her music with her contemplative Quaker faith.

AND MORE! January 28 brings The Four Freshmen to Smothers Theatre, sponsored by Anne Marie and Mitch Bredefeld. Since their inception in 1948, The Four Freshmen have toured the world with a unique blend of harmonic jazz arrangements and big band vocal group sounds. FourFreshmen.com Award-winning jazz singer, songwriter and motivational speaker Mandy Harvey performs January 30, incorporating American Sign Language into her rich performance. Although Harvey lost her residual hearing at age 18, her timing, pitch and passion are perfect. She glides from a "breathy jazz standard to growling blues" that gets the audience up on its feet (LA Times), and though she can't hear the applause or her own remarkable voice, she continues to find joy in music and inspire all who can listen. After a connective tissue disorder led to Harvey’s residual hearing loss while she was attending Colorado State University as a Vocal Music Education major, she left the program and pursued other career options, returning to music, her true passion, in 2008. Named VSA’s Top Young Soloist in 2011, Harvey has performed at the Kennedy Center and January 2018 | Malibu to Palisades Lifestyle

FINANCIAL BUZZ

THE POWER OF HABIT:

THE NEW YEAR IS A POINT OF RESET, OFTEN SERVING AS A CATALYST

ARTICLE JEFF RUNYAN

TO ENCOURAGE NEW, MORE FAVORABLE ACTIONS AND BEHAVIORS FOR BOTH INDIVIDUALS AND BUSINESSES. It’s an opportunity to start anew and replace the “old with new” and the “bad with good,” at least when it comes to habits. And, this year may be no different, but we all know the reality of keeping those new habits in place can also prove to be difficult. So, let me encourage a delightful read by Charles Duhigg, the Pulitzer

Prize-winning columnist and author of The Power of Habit, on the New York Times bestseller list. Reading it can be a great start to foster growth and launch the habits you hope to see more of in the year(s) ahead. Then let’s rifle through this Top 7 List of changes you can implement

immediately that can quickly and swiftly help you graduate to a higher

tier of financial success: ››› 1) Start using your 401k or other retirement plan to maximize your taxdeductible contributions, or, exercise the Roth 401k (many employers now offer) and put away after-tax dollars.

››› 2) If you’re already using a retirement plan, increase your participation. The maximum contribution you’re eligible for in 2018 has increased to $18,500 and if you’re age 50 or older, you’re still eligible for a catch-up provision of $6,000 annually. That allows a total of $24,500 contributed in the year. (By the way, if your employer contributes a hypothetical 5% to your plan, don’t contribute only to achieve the match … go for your maximum. The free money is great, but remember you’re putting money away to be able to retire not just to achieve a minimum match.)

››› 3) Increase the principal payment to your mortgage monthly. You may not even notice the small difference when deducted from your checking account, but the life of your loan will diminish and you’ll achieve your payoff much faster.

››› 4) If you have children and want to help them with future college expenses, launch and fund a College Savings 529 Plan (it allows opportunity to achieve tax-free growth for college expenses).

››› 5) Review the interest you earn in your checking and savings accounts. If the yield is shockingly low and you have significant balances in cash, consider short-term bond alternatives and/or money market funds that may generate more income (if, of course you're willing to accept more risk).

››› 6) Identify your financial goals, and if they’re genuine, make your actions reflect that which you hope to achieve.

››› 7) If you have credit card or other revolving debt, pay it off. Even people that have significant assets can at times surprise me with debt on credit cards. Check the interest rate, whatever it is—you’re probably rewarding your bottom line by paying it off. This short list can affect the trajectory of your financial future in a significant and

meaningful way. Just like cutting late-night snacks from your daily diet can lead to a slim physique, these fine-tuning adjustments can radically affect your financial economic household for the better and lead you to an exciting financial future.

PARTING THOUGHTS ARTICLE KIM PAGANO

Balance & Purpose Promote Health & Well-Being WHEN I THINK OF HEALTH AND WELLNESS, I THINK OF SELF-PRESERVATION. I used to think that we were all indispensable for the most part, until I realized that is just not true. If you have ever had an illness creep up on you, then you know you don't have total control of it. What you do have is control of your surroundings at home and at work. However, without realizing it, things can get out of control. When my mother passed away, I was not ready to release all of her things that reminded me of her and all the memories I had with her during my childhood. It's been almost two years now and saving these things has made my life feel cluttered. I have learned that instead of saving all the personal items from my mom, I can choose the most memorable items and pictures to save, because the memories with my mom will always be there in my heart to cherish. To preserve your own health, it is important not to take on more than you can handle. This is a huge lesson learned from someone like myself who loves having her fingers in lots of projects and businesses. I have always felt like an energy bunny because I routinely take on new projects. I have realized that taking on too many tasks can lead to spreading yourself too thin, which results in more stress. With the many incredible guests over the years that I have had on my show, I’ve learned so many lessons—the most important being that life is what you make it. Starting your day in a positive way, planning your success and strategizing your life and your decisions sets you on the right path toward living your best life. I have also learned to always be mindful of the people you allow in your life. Are they lifting you up or pulling you down? This is important to know because we usually end up being like the people we surround ourselves with. Are you being kind to yourself? Sometimes it's not anyone else bringing us down, but maybe our own experiences are creating automatic negative thoughts in our heads. Fall in love with yourself, cherish your body and your gifts, and most importantly, don’t forget about your purpose that you bring to this universe. Lastly, being grateful for all the things that we have in our lives is very important because it can all slip away as fast as it comes. So when you rest your head at night, take a moment to reflect on how you've spent your day and if you are spending it in a wise way. Know you’re worth it and remind yourself that you are perfect just the way you are! Wishing you a Happy, Healthy & Prosperous New Year!
