Malibu to Palisades Together We Stand
T
his year is coming to a close… By any measure 2017 has been a very uncertain and contentious year in our country. The communities that we serve, the Conejo Valley, Malibu and Pacific Palisades, are more fortunate and less impacted by many of the troubles swirling about the rest of our state, country and even the world. But what does the future hold? Will the air continue to be cleaner than it was when I arrived in California 40 years ago? Or will suddenly unleashed fossil fuel polluters destroy what has been achieved by so many years of hard environmental management? Will our liberties become eroded by dictatorial populism? Please remember that Nazism, Fascism and Communism were populist movements. Will the stark divisions so evident in the rest of the country take hold in California as well? On a social level, all of this translates to bringing our very complex and diverse society together; we also need to make an effort to better understand and respect differences. An elitist, overly politically correct attitude contributes toward increasing the divide. On the other hand, “I’ve got it and the heck with you” does the same thing. We cannot allow our communities, our state and our country to become fence sitters staring across an abyss at each other. We are better than that. The outreach in our local communities through nonprofits and individual effort never ceases to amaze me. The fact is that our communities are very affluent, but when it comes to supporting the people in our community and beyond, “we put our money where our mouth is.” Normally messages this time of year are filled with good cheer and happiness. Let’s get beneath that seasonal surface and reach out and really come together in 2018. If we do that as individuals and through our communities, perhaps the dysfunctional politicians on both sides of the political aisle can reboot and actually get something accomplished for not only their narrow constituencies but the entire country. Best wishes for a healthy and enjoyable holiday season from the Lifestyle team!

The tradition of “The Nutcracker” overflows from stage into our community, as PFB believes firmly in bringing dance and the arts to those who may not have the resources to set foot in a theatre. Each year, outreach performances are presented by PFB and the Kids in the Arts program exclusively for local children and Title 1 schools. With budget cuts affecting arts education, this opportunity introduces children to the theatre and performing arts firsthand. Another local organization that holds the heart of Pacific Festival Ballet is Support for the Kids, founded by Lynda Miller. Each year donated tickets bring upward of 100 individuals to attend “The Nutcracker” or PFB’s spring ballet. In an effort to bring the holiday spirit to those who cannot attend a theatre performance, select cast members share the magic of “The Nutcracker” in a charming preview show. These performances are brought to children at Casa Pacifica as well as seniors at University Village to enhance their Christmas celebrations. Kim Maselli, artistic director of Pacific Festival Ballet feels these outreaches are vital.
“The performing arts have a way of crossing boundaries and uniting us all,” says Kim. “Dance and music give us a common voice and the ability to find joy in a form that is universal.” Each year, PFB’s “The Nutcracker” is launched with a renewed spirit. P
acific Palisades is home to a supportive community of friendly, caring neighbors that embrace every opportunity to lend a hand and enhance the quality of life in the neighborhood.
While it takes a village to sustain such a wonderful community, those special individuals who have
made voluntary contributions to Pacific Palisades that benefit the community at large are recognized each year in December by the Pacific Palisades Community Council. Since 2015, the PPCC has honored residents for their community contributions with their Citizen of the Year Award and Golden Sparkplug Award. "These awards are given out annually to community members who, through their extraordinary volunteer efforts, make the Pacific Palisades such a unique and exceptional place," says George Wolfberg, Awards Selection Committee Chair and former PPCC Chair. Representing the voice of the Pacific Palisades community since 1973, the nonprofit PPCC provides a forum for the discussion of community issues and advocates to government and private agencies on those issues where there is broad community agreement. As one of the oldest volunteer organizations of its type in the City of Los Angeles, the PPCC served as a model for the current Neighborhood Council system. Its Board includes elected area representatives from all residential neighborhoods of the Palisades, an elected at-large representative and representatives appointed by important community organizations. “We discuss and debate matters that impact the Palisades and, when there is consensus, we take a position which we present to City, County and State agencies, or private actors, with great impact,” says PPCC Chair Maryam Zar. “Our credibility is uncontested and our watchful eye over the interests of Pacific Palisades is unyielding.” In addition to holding regular community meetings, PPCC proudly sponsors the annual Citizen of the Year and Golden Sparkplug Awards, and from time to time also bestows special Pride of the Palisades honors. The awards are presented to deserving citizen volunteers at PPCC’s annual December Awards Gala.

e all have difficult times in our life, so we're not alone. If you are reading this right now, that
means you have woken up to have another chance to what we all call life, and a chance to clean our slates. What are we going to do differently today to make it better? That is the question on the table. Take a moment now
to choose your path for today's present. Gifts don't have to always be monetary, in fact, sharing positive thoughts and gratitude through the holidays and really throughout the whole year is the most amazing gift you can gift yourself or anyone else. The effect can have a tangible impact on our well-being and allow us to share happiness during stressful times. Simple handmade gifts are another form of gift-giving. Think candles, favorite recipes or another gift that you do best. Share those gifts with everyone! We all have a gift that we have been given, and others will appreciate your original and personal ideas. I saved the best idea for last, and, as we are all so busy, giving our time is still by far the best gift you can ever give anyone, especially your family.
