Yes, we do! I have lived all over the country—born and raised in Philadelphia; 4 years of college at Penn State in Happy Valley; Sacramento, Biloxi, Boston, Mission Viejo, Dallas, Princeton, Albuquerque (I still cannot spell it right the first time), Oxnard and finally, for the past 18 years, Westlake Village in the Conejo Valley. Robin is kind of a stick in the mud (she will not like that I said that) having lived only in North Hollywood, Encino and now 18 years together with me here in the wonderful Conejo Valley. When we came together in 2004, we both knew where we wanted to live and so we made it happen. We haven’t had a single doubt ever since. Since February is a month often given over to “Love,” I thought I would send a loving Valentine to our community. Why do we love it, you may ask? First there is the obvious: It is a beautiful place to live. Most suburban communities are more often than not part of a suburban sprawl with tract homes all blending together. This area has somehow retained its natural beauty, with plenty of open space, relatively clean air and relatively low density. I have lost count of the times that either Robin or I have spontaneously remarked, “Isn’t this a beautiful place to live?!” However, the best reason to “Love it Here” are the people. Our community has held together during a pandemic, a terrible fire and a senseless act of mass violence. We may not all agree on any number of issues, but while we may agree to disagree, we all remain part of the common good. During some unstable economic times our nonprofits that support health, children and the arts and that fight hunger and provide shelter have fought through all of the challenges. There is a passion here to Give Back. It’s our home and we love it.

From the Heart Local Authors We Love ARTICLE BY ALICIA DOYLE With the month of February all about love, we found it fitting to feature three local authors who have captured our hearts through literature.

An author and elementary school teacher, Ann Stalcup grew up in England and moved to the United States in 1963 when she married her husband who she met on a trip to Greece that summer. Her published nonfiction work includes award-winning On the Home Front: Growing Up in Wartime England, an autobiographical account of her childhood experiences during World War ll—the first of 19 published books. Leo Politi, Artist of the Angels—the book Ann is most proud of—is a biography of a Los Angeles artist and author whom she admired for many years. “Leo was born in Fresno, but when he was 6, his father announced that they were returning to Italy, his homeland, a devastating move for Leo and his sister,” Ann explains. When he was 21, at the height of the Depression, Leo returned to the U.S. and settled in Los Angeles. On his return journey by freighter, Leo became fascinated with the Latino culture which had influenced him throughout his life. One day, in his explorations of his new city, he and his wife wandered into Olvera Street. Leo said, “I thought I was in heaven to find this street.” From then on, he visited Olvera Street every day for the rest of his life. A restaurant gave him a table on the sidewalk and his career was born. He sold sketches of tourists for 10 cents apiece or 25 cents for three, and he sketched the activity going on around him. “Not one but two prominent New York editors admired his work and book contracts developed from those chance meetings,” Ann says. “Eventually he had 20 published picture children’s books… each of them focusing upon the minority children in the area. He also wrote five books for adults about the parks, festivals and Victorian homes around him that he was sure would disappear along with so much else in the city he had grown to love.” In 1991, at age 82, Leo’s dream of having a school named after him came true. He died just 5 years later. “Children motivated Leo in his painting, writing and drawing,” Ann adds. “Although I was one of many Leo addressed as ‘friend,’ his death left a hole in my life. Carla McCloskey Before becoming an author, Carla McCloskey was a longtime director and assistant director who began her film career when she was picked as an assistant director by the Producers Association. “I was one of the first women in this position,” recalls Carla, who has lived in Malibu since 1981 with her husband, Leigh J. McCloskey, an actor, artist and author. Carla was later the assistant director on many films, including “The Goodbye Girl,” “California Suite,” “Death Becomes Her,” “Point of No Return,” “Point Break,” “The ‘Burbs,” “The Color of Night,” “Hook” and “Jurassic Park.” She worked with directors Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, Robert Zemeckis, Richard Rush, John Badham, Herbert Ross and Cher. She also worked on the television series “Amazing Stories,” “Babylon 5,” “Ally McBeal,” “Gilmore Girls” and “The Closer.” Carla wrote her first book, Grandma Told Me So— Lessons in Life and Love, to help others find and keep the best possible relationships in their lives. Carla writes with the wisdom and simplicity that she learned during her early life in Lodi, Wisconsin, a picture-perfect small Midwestern town. “At my grandmother's side, I developed the life tools to balance rich personal relationships and family with a demanding life in Hollywood as a director and assistant director to many of today's most notable actors and filmmakers,” says Carla, adding that she and her husband “have shared the many facets of a life in Hollywood while never forgetting to live a life in love.” Carla wrote her second book, Living in an Alien Body— Surviving Stroke, from her own personal experience to help others navigate the life-altering trauma of stroke. “This book will transform the way you think about stroke,” emphasizes Carla, whose goal with the book is “to navigate a stroke for you or a loved one—and hopefully prevent stroke.” Ultimately, “it may even help you or a loved one survive it—not as a helpless victim, but as an unexpected journeyer into strange and foreign lands.” For more information about Carla’s books, contact carlamccloskey@aol.com. Susan Rubin As an award-winning nonfiction author, Susan Goldman Rubin has written a number of children’s books on themes of social justice, as well as biographies of figures in the arts. “My latest picture book is Madame Alexander: The Creator of the Iconic American Doll,” Susan says of her inspiring picture book biography illustrated by Sarah Dvojack about the artist and businesswoman whose love for dolls and bringing joy to others began at a young age and only continued to grow. One of Susan’s many books geared for young adults also includes Give Us the Vote: Over 200 Years of Fighting for the Ballot. “The project began with a suggestion from my editor at Holiday House that we publish a history of voting rights in time for the November 2020 election,” recalls Susan, who wanted to reach young people who might soon be voting and inspire them to protect and use their precious right. “So we opened with the Children’s Crusade in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963, and their protest for the right to vote,” Susan explains. “Then I went back to 1787 and the delegates who decided who could vote in America.” Writing this book involved extensive photo research. “Since I began my work as an illustrator, I wanted to include vintage photos, posters and cartoons that would bring events to life,” Susan remembers. “Just as I was about to send my picture files to my editor, we faced a fire scare in Malibu and were evacuated.” Desperate to save the images she had downloaded, Susan sought help from her son, who told her to grab the hard drive. “A few days later, we learned that our house had been spared,” says Susan, who had lost her first house in the wildfire of 1993 and knew the sorrow that many friends experienced. “By the weekend, I was able to attend a conference in Houston to receive an award for my book, The Quilts of Gee’s Bed,” she recalls. “When I saw my Give Us the Vote editor, we hugged each other, giddy with joy that our pictures were safe and we could publish on time. CHOCOLATE and WINE February brings celebrations of love which frequently include the timeless treasure of wine and chocolate. Whether it’s over romantic dinners for two or between female friends at “Galentine’s” parties, wine and chocolate will be making lots of appearances this month. Use this as your guide to creating an exquisite experience for your loved ones this month. These aphrodisiacs have a lot of similarities to each other. For one, they both contain flavanols (antioxidants) and polyphenols (compounds found in plant-based food) that are good for you and have anti-inflammatory properties. But because these characteristics affect flavor, it’s somewhat challenging to pair wine and chocolate together. The more polyphenols, the more pronounced the bitter taste. For example, if you sip a delicious dry red wine alongside a hunk of dark chocolate, the wine will start to taste bitter and sour. The taste imbalance is coming from the heightened levels of flavanols (different types of tannin) found in both chocolate and wine that end up clashing against each other on your tongue. While it might sound counterintuitive, a good rule of thumb is to pair a wine that is “sweeter” than the chocolate itself. “Sweet” doesn’t refer to dessert wines alone. In the wine world, the term “sweet” is often used to denote ripe, fruit-forward flavors in a wine. These characteristics provide a nice balance to the bitter flavors of cocoa. Both wine and chocolate can have intense, dry flavors. In order to find the right balance, it’s best to choose wines that are a little bit softer and juicier than the chocolate you’re pairing it with. Fortunately, we’ve done the footwork to find several wines that partner well with chocolate. Here are our guidelines for matching chocolate with wine and a few of our favorite wine and chocolate pairings. We hope you’ll try them and then get inspired to experiment and create your own.

T I P 1 : M AT C H S U G A R WITH SUGAR What’s true of relationships is not true of wine and chocolate: opposites do not attract. When it comes to pairing chocolate and wine, you don’t want to strike a balance, you want to match sugar to sugar. Sweeter chocolate like white chocolate does better when consumed with sweeter wines and bitter chocolate like dark chocolate enjoys being paired with dryer wines. Think of it as matching sugar with sugar. Sweet white chocolate pairs well with sweet wines high in residual sugars and bitter darks with dry wines with just a hint of residual sugar. A good rule of thumb is to always pair wines that are equally or slightly more sweet than the chocolate being eaten with it.

The opposite is also true: strong-tasting chocolate will blow a delicate wine out of the water. Keep this rule of thumb in mind: light-flavored chocolates enjoy being paired with light-bodied wines and intensely flavored chocolates prefer being paired with full-bodied wines.

If your chocolate contains other ingredients such as nuts, fruit, or caramel, consider how these flavors will play with the wine. This is especially helpful to remember when enjoying truffles with wine. To avoid creating a palate power play between the two, do your best to match fruity or floral chocolates with fruity wines like Moscato or White Zinfandel. Mr. Malibu Muse: Impact of Our Focus

In this exploration of how our focus impacts our lives, I interviewed Georgette Cressend, whose counseling expertise is on the cutting edge of expanded consciousness. As she describes, “I’ve been blessed to be able to discern between egoic patterns that stimulate anxiety, depression or discomfort from the Truth of the heart that serves peace, happiness and love. I assist people with being clear about what they really want as we reveal the truth of what we are. I call it being together being-to-being rather than pattern-to-pattern or thought-to-thought.” Cary: A person’s perception creates what actually ends up manifesting in their life on many levels, and an expanding awareness of how we are perceiving ourselves and our experiences makes a huge difference. What I learned recently while eating a cleansing diet is how I could feel what foods were affecting my body. It triggered further contemplation of how I want to use feeling and deeply sensing the moment instead of referring to thought. This inspired me to be here, “Real Time,” being aware of what I’m focusing on and its effect. Georgette: We can take it to something very simple: We can feel whatever thought we’re thinking, and each thought has a different frequency, and each frequency feels different than the other, so what you’re saying is right on. Cary: What steps can we take to shift our perception and be in charge of what we’re experiencing? Let’s consider affirmations. Their impact happens when neuroplasticity takes place, shifting our subliminal belief system. Concurrent with this, Russian researchers said they proved in the lab that language—words—can affect our DNA, which is actually designed to respond to certain language. How I’m interpreting what I’m focusing on is what’s either causing a positive or negative reaction.

Georgette: (Note: There is no person, place or thing that is inherently positive or negative. It is our perception and interpretation that deems an experience good or bad, positive or negative.) With so many of us stressed and pulled in many directions, the first possibility of shifting focus from typical struggle is to simply stop and relax. If a person wants to shift their life from one of struggle to one of presence and Harmony, the first thing is to bring attention into the moment. Focusing on the breath, on the sensations in the body or on the third eye for example. Whatever works for someone that feels best. Some of us are afraid to actually be still and quiet because we’re so used to the chaos and the noise. Depending on where we are in our Crest of Consciousness, we can close our eyes and be with what we’re feeling. The way to strengthen a shift in consciousness is to keep at it. The whole point of the expansion is about having a happier more peaceful life. I haven’t seen or found anybody that doesn’t want to be happy, peaceful, joyful and help others. If we want the happiness, peace and joy; if we want to be able to meet each circumstance with an equilibrium that doesn’t jump off the cliff at the first sight of upset or the first sight of something going wrong, then this is the way to that elevation. Consciousness is a way to meet life without judgment, fear and knowing. It’s a way to meet life not having to know, and when we meet life not having to know, there’s more space for what’s here to be seen AS IT IS rather than as we think it is. Cary: I was thinking about the laws of creation in terms of vibrational frequency. If you have two tuning forks that are tuned precisely to the same frequency, then one can activate the frequency of the other. So it appears our role in creating or attracting things is all about frequency activation

and frequency harmonization, and may not be from our emotional or perceptual matrix. It’s more about identifying the exact frequency that’s going on in each body or person that we’re interacting with; matching those vibrational frequencies to create what we want. Georgette: This is not a mental process. It’s like the feeling when you walk in a room and you feel something’s off and you want to leave, or you feel as if it’s home. The vibrational frequency has to match in order to activate what we’re intending to create. Just someone’s presence can activate a frequency in another. The more aware we are of our own resonance/presence, the more we’ll be able to be of service to people. Note: The frequencies of unresolved trauma influence the frequencies to which we can resonate. So our emotional and perceptual well-being does contribute to the harmonizing of frequencies. Cary: There is also contrary action. If our mind is telling us to eat cake, we go for a walk outside instead. Contrary action can be one of those counter-balancing frequency generators that bring us more into balance. If I stop judging myself, then I can stop judging you, and I can start to see how the thing that was judging is just a pattern I took on from childhood. I’m learning to see how much of what I see on the outside is actually being projected from inside. Georgette: Thought itself is not causing a problem. It’s believing the thought that is problematic. Thoughts don’t cause us to feel this or that. It’s giving energy to a thought by believing it that has us feel … Cary: Is our identity nothing more than our perception? We derive our sense of identity through interaction with others. That is a pivotal element in elevating consciousness. We can’t really shift until we see how our perception is formulated. In conclusion, as we shift our focus, the resulting frequencies affect our bodies, minds and souls. Our ability to spontaneously sense this effect in the moment, without interference from our emotional and mental selves, reveals the impact of our focus. Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our three tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love. A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

1. USE REAL ESTATE WISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

2. ORGANIZE BY KIND AND COLOR Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

3. UPGRADED HANGERS The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:
