"Health & Wellness." During the past 2 years this phrase has almost become an oxymoron, but it now looks as if Health & Wellness has become a realistic goal. As we enter 2023 the challenges are still here, but it looks like the worst is behind us. It really is time to get well mentally, emotionally and physically. When Tracy, Robin and I discussed our annual Health & Wellness issue, my flippant comment was to discuss how to focus on "getting your head screwed on straight." They both laughed, but I was actually serious. After some discussion we decided that Tracy would write a "Chill Out" article. What to do, where to go to chill out. Even easier, find a hot tub and relax. Is a hot tub different than chilling out because it's hot? Not really. A glass of wine and a companion who cares about you is the chilling out part, while the hot tub takes away your aches and pains. I'm not getting any younger and I have plenty of those. Our Health & Wellness Guide is a summary of health and wellness practices and businesses we trust. Yes they do advertise with us, but our readers should know that we would not accept their advertising if we had any doubts about their care and professionalism. A New Year Brings New Opportunities at Boys & Girls Club of Malibu Happy New Year to our local community, Boys & Girls Club of Malibu family and friends! BGCM is passionate about making a difference in Malibu! We do this by providing resources and support services for youth, individuals and families throughout Malibu and beyond. Our work is focused on encouraging and empowering every person that we serve. BGCM operates as a trauma-informed facility, continuously evolving to meet the needs of our kids and our community.

The Boys & Girls Club of Malibu is a community resource available to area families! BGCM provides afterschool enrichment programs focusing on character and leadership, the arts, academic success, health and wellness, and diversity equity and inclusion at all four Malibu public schools. Additionally, in partnership with Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu Wellness Center provides mental health and wellness resources, social support services and social/emotional learning for students. The BGCM Wellness Center provides a variety of services at no cost, including, but not limited to the following: • Mental health counseling • Parent support groups • Student education • Crisis intervention • Drug/suicide prevention • And more... We believe in the power of our young people and mentoring the next generation of leaders. Every year since 1999, BGCM has offered a safe space for youth, families and the community at large to receive support with dignity, care and respect for all.

Being president of Torch Club gave me leadership skills and taught me such important life skills. Brent’s Club impacted me on a very personal level. I am so glad I am able to participate in such an influential program, which focuses on drug prevention. Being able to bring awareness to such a big problem in our world, especially among my peers and the ones I care for, is such a privilege,” she adds. “When I think of the Boys & Girls Club of Malibu, I instantly think of the feeling of always being welcome and included. The staff here have built a fun and positive community. Since my first year of being enrolled, I have always felt safe and at home. There is always someone to talk to or to just keep me company. With a main focus on observing my thought life, eating a healthy diet and consistent daily exercise has been a part of my daily routine since I was a student at Malibu Webster Elementary. As a youngster, my friend in the Malibu Colony, Ivan Goff, creator of “Charlie’s Angels,” insisted that I and his son, Brian, jog on the beach every day no matter what we felt like. I am so thankful for him as I see how this daily discipline can be an environment for mental, physical and spiritual well-being. A vegetarian for 12 years and eating mostly everything organic, I embraced my mother’s philosophy that most foods are okay in moderation. As a result, I didn’t have many food restrictions and allowed myself to eat decadent desserts, deep-fried foods, pizza and bags of M&M’s once in a while. Cruising along with my daily practices, I’ve been healthy most of my life. However, several years ago, I realized that I was affected by Wi-Fi and cell phone radiation, which created a band of pressure around my head. I went to a top-rated neurologist and after tests and questioning, he wrote a letter advising the company where I worked to provide a 10-foot distance from computers and cell phones using Wi-Fi. My reactions to this type of radiation have mostly diminished after receiving acupuncture sessions with Dr. David Kearney, who is world-renowned for his three degrees from the U.K., China and the U.S.

When I began experiencing more biological challenges a couple years ago after hernia surgery, a friend suggested I follow a diet free from wheat, dairy, sugar and nightshade vegetables. A liver and kidney cleanse was also recommended along with a celery/carrot juice cleansing. I strictly did all of the above for 3 months and was blown away by how much better I felt. I began to really taste food more consciously and be aware of how the body reacted to each type of food. I now enjoy occasional wheat, dairy and very minimal sugar. If I eat something and my body has an adverse reaction to it, it’s perfectly okay. I just notice how it feels and consider more carefully the next time. I feel like I’ve found true freedom by doing this one simple thing: Observe how I feel without any need for a story, interpretation or judgment and let the feeling be my guidance. Alternatively, I eat almond flour tortillas instead of toast, and almond milk rather than cow’s milk. In keeping with this new diet, I have become a much better chef, making unique savory meals like cauliflower or asparagus pancakes with organic almond pancake flour. I use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce, and nutritional yeast flakes instead of cheese. I enjoy roasted pumpkin seeds in salads with a dressing made of two-thirds organic stone ground mustard and one-third fresh-squeezed lemon juice, shaken vigorously to the right viscosity. The impact of this new way of eating has given me more than feeling better physically—I’m now aware of how much I used to rely on snack foods. For instance, grabbing a

quick bagel or a handful of chips (most of which do not have healthy oils) while heading out the door. I also now take the time to make delicious dishes and have them available when I do need a snack. Last but not least, the effects of these choices have kept my weight in balance. I am inspired to share how I begin each day. Upon awakening, I consider my plans for the day and ask that my thinking be directed so that my actions are aligned with truth, love and harmony. I am open to inspiration regarding any questions I may have, and I relax and take it easy throughout my day. If I notice that I’m struggling, I stop and take a deep breath, calming the thinking that invites strain and stress.

Better.’ through family-friendly social events, drives/rallies, track days and meets.” I was fortunate to be invited by the Bimmercircuit family to join them on a drive so I can get a glimpse of what the BC culture is. They took me on an incredible drive from Gorman to Ojai. Taking their M3s/M5s and any other BMW you can imagine to roads less travelled allows these vehicles to be driven the way they were meant to be driven. Still, safety for the drivers and the

driving public is paramount—I felt safer on this drive than I do on the 101. I rode "shotgun" in Ferrukh's M3cs—an award-winning beauty that by the time Ferrukh and his team completed their modifications, exceeded factory specs. It was, as BMW says, "A Driving Machine." More than a dozen BMW enthusiasts showed up for the drive. They were a warm and friendly crew of all ages and backgrounds. The drive across the Tehachapi Mountains on Hudson Ranch Road and then down to Ojai was wonderfully beautiful, filled with late fall color, mountain views, crisp clean air and camaraderie amongst folks with a shared passion. All in all, it was a great day full of fun for me. Steps for Life VENTURA COUNTY HEART WALK

After a 2-year hiatus, the American Heart Association’s Ventura County Heart Walk made a comeback, bringing together more than 600 community members for a walk to save lives from heart disease and stroke, the nation’s leading causes of death. The event, held at California Lutheran University and sponsored by Amgen, UCLA Health and Dignity Health St. John’s Regional Medical Center, raised more than $144,000. Among the walk participants were Vicki Woods, who celebrated surviving a series of heart attacks when she was 47 years old, and the Martinez family, who walked in honor of Heaven, who was born with a heart defect. Teams from local companies also joined the event, including Bank of America, Moorpark College, Oxnard College, Westfalia Fruit Marketing, Adventist Health Simi Valley, the City of Thousand Oaks and Sage Publishing/Corwin. Heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases claim the lives of more than 870,000 men, women and children every year. Funds raised at the Heart Walk support the work of improving care and outcomes for heart disease and stroke patients, advocating for stronger public health policies and funding innovative scientific research to improve survival and find cures. The American Heart Association has invested more than $5 billion in research, resulting in breakthroughs that save and improve countless lives every day, including CPR, the artificial heart valve, cholesterol-lowering drugs, stents and microsurgery.
