“Come on! Let’s celebrate!” As Kool & The Gang remind us, “There's a party going on right here. A celebration to last throughout the years. So bring your good times and your laughter too. We gonna celebrate your party with you!” The holiday season presents many opportunities to celebrate and enjoy good times and laughter with those we love. Even more, “It’s time to come together… Everyone around the world, come on!” As we witness hardship and tragedy on the world stage and at home, it really is time to come together and unite more than ever. We need each other—each and every one of us—to lend a hand and help out in big and small ways to get through hard times, overcome obstacles and triumph, so we can celebrate all the good things in life. Whether it’s feeding the hungry, housing the homeless or just being a friend, our actions matter and have the power to make a significant impact on others. In this issue, we feature just a few of the many things we celebrate in our community. The annual performance of “The Nutcracker” by Pacific Festival Ballet, for example, heralds the holiday season as local and world-renowned ballerinas come together to showcase the beauty of this heartwarming tradition. Aldik Home is the place to go to get in the holiday spirit—walk through their beautiful tree lot to get inspired and decorate your own home for the season. We’re also excited to introduce Wild Fork, an innovative grocer that features the best frozen foods of all kinds, at great prices, to serve up delicious holiday meals fit for a celebration with friends and family. If you’re looking for a little getaway not too far to drive, consider checking in to Margaritaville in San Diego’s Gaslamp District, where you can relax and soak up the changes in attitude and latitude for a much-needed break. When it’s time to think about finances for next year, our financial mavens are ready with their advice and expertise about the best money moves. Our National Giving Campaign aims to help those in need around the nation, so check it out and send us your suggestions on how to help. So let’s remember as we come together this holiday season to “celebrate good times … Cause (together) everything's gonna be all right.” Let's celebrate! Happy Holidays!

Smart Money Moves for 2024 PARTNER WITH A PROFESSIONAL TO MAKE THE BEST FINANCIAL DECISIONS IN THE NEW YEAR

Laura Raulinaitis

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

Our country’s economic climate is constantly changing. Some years are relatively stable and financially sound while others are fraught with upheaval and uncertainty. Many people find these fluctuations challenging and stressful when it comes to financial planning. It’s important to keep in mind that help is out there. Wealth advisors and certified financial planners are professionals who can help make planning for the new year and into the future both seamless and effective by taking into account their clients’ particular lifestyles, ages and goals. Laura Marie Raulinaitis, CFP®, a certified financial planner who, along with her husband Darius Raulinaitis, CFA, founded The Lake Avenue Group at Morgan Stanley in Westlake Village, are experienced professionals. “Your financial advisor is here to be your guide when you’re nervous or scared,” she says. “You call your financial advisor when you need advice, when you need handholding and when you need guidance—we are akin to financial doctors. We aim to help keep your finances healthy and keep you from making bad decisions. When it comes to making healthy decisions in your portfolio, it’s hard to do without an experienced professional.” Jennifer Strong, CFP®, a wealth advisor with Montecito Bank & Trust Advisors in Westlake Village, is another such expert, and she agrees that having a financial partner is a necessity. She explains that when people try to develop financial plans on their own, they may not know what things are critical to take into account. Here are some common items she often sees missed: 1. Failing to consider life insurance or long-term care insurance when a person is young. Premiums are much more affordable the sooner one implements life insurance.

8

F IN A N CIA L BU Z Z | FIN ANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

2. Failing to include emergency funds for unexpected expenses. 3. Not factoring in inflation and taxes in making projections for the future. 4. Making unrealistic investment return assumptions. When Jennifer first meets with a client, she usually begins by simply getting to know them, which is one of her favorite parts of the job. “I ask them to tell me about their work, family, lifestyle, current financial situation and habits,” she says. “What makes them happy? How do they see themselves in retirement years—traveling, charity, hobbies? Where will they live? I ask how they feel about their current financial situation and how they envision their future. Have they set specific goals?” Once Jennifer has this information, she can work with clients to establish an appropriate, customized financial plan to target these goals. “This plan could include long- and short-term investment recommendations, estate-planning recommendations, tax considerations, life insurance, long-term care insurance and education savings strategies,” she says. “For business owners, this could include cash management, retirement plan implementation for employees, business succession planning and key man insurance.” MB&T Advisors offers complimentary consultations with wealth advisors like Jennifer, mortgage loan officers, commercial loan officers, personal bankers and business bankers. “I like the phrase ‘Jack of all trades, master of none,’” she says. “I truly value the relationship I have with my CPA, my realtor, my attorney and my hair stylist. Each of those people in my life have many years of experience and knowledge I could not possibly have and still be an expert in my own field, not to mention managing my family and personal life. “When was the last time you cut your own hair, and how did that turn out? Each of those people are part of my team of trusted advisors and I am happy to compensate them for the value they add to my life, not to mention the time saved and mistakes avoided!” As financial professionals, she and Laura have some great suggestions for 2024 that will help not only to maintain assets, but to help grow them. “Every year we should look at our financial plan or financial situation and work to make it stronger,” says Laura. “Take a good hard look at how much things cost today, including gas and groceries,” she says. “Most things are now more expensive than they were before.” When it comes to groceries, many people, she says, don’t realize that while they may be paying the same price

for something in the supermarket, the size of the packaging has become smaller. “Little things like that really start adding up and I think being aware of that is important.” Something else that has changed dramatically and will still most likely be true throughout 2024 is the increased interest rate, which means CDs (Certificates of Deposit) and money markets are offering much better returns now than in the recent past. However, this increase in interest rates can affect other financial aspects in a negative fashion. “It’s tough because the last several years we’ve had low inflation and very low interest rates and people aren’t realizing that now they can’t buy as much with the same amount of money,” she says. “For example, if they thought they could buy a million dollar house in the past, now they are realizing they can only buy an $800,000 house. Because of these higher rates, the cost of that house to the borrower is the same as a million dollar house was when interest rates were lower.” Adds Laura, “I think 2024 is the year of rebuilding of the economy, so people are pretty legitimately back to being social and traveling. We’re seeing experiences as more important to people in society today versus items, so they should expect to plan for their next experience because those are the things that seem to matter more now. When their kids are going off to college, they’re going to be visiting them on parents’ weekend. Plus, the average college student is spending more money on experiences too. They’re not so worried about their wardrobes and things like that, so it’s changing the way that we spend money and the way that we think about material items.” For those with debt, she encourages them to pay it off as quickly as possible, especially those with adjustable interest rates. “Pay down those credit cards with the highest interest rates first,” says Laura. “With these rates going up, a lot of people who may have been paying less for that credit card are now paying a lot more and it’s costing them a lot more to keep that debt. “We are at the highest credit card balances of all time. We just rolled a trillion dollars in credit card debt—that’s a really big deal.” The ever-increasing cost of health insurance and college costs are also major influences on determining a workable financial plan. When it comes to savings, she’s worried that younger people are only going to see the fluctuations in the stock market versus that 5% interest rate and have reluctance to enter the stock market, which she’s seen after recessions in the past.

“Eve r y yea r we s h ou l d l ook a t ou r f i n a n c i a l pl a n or f i n a n c i a l s it u at i on a n d

work t o m a k e it st ronge r.”

“I would like to encourage all people to think longer term.” Laura says it’s also necessary to realize that inflation can eat away your ability to pay for your child’s college education, to buy a house or car, manage the cost of the goods in your home and purchase other items. “That means we need to invest in things that can make up an interest rate higher than inflation because inflation is our biggest risk.” Adds Jennifer, “We experienced some anomalous conditions in 2023 to include high inflation and a fast and steady increase in interest rates. Recession was a looming concern. As a result, borrowing and spending slowed. The silver lining was that U.S. Treasury short-term rates skyrocketed to levels that became very attractive for those with extra cash on hand. “Having said that, one can see that from year to year financial conditions change which could affect the trajectory of your financial plan. It is helpful to check in with your financial planner/advisor to ensure you are on track.” In addition, she says, life events such as marriage, babies, divorce, job/ employer change, geographic relocation, inheritance, loss of a loved one, sale of a business and other changes may alter your original financial plan. “For 2024, it would be helpful to be aware of changing interest rates as this may influence a real estate decision, obtaining a loan and effect returns on short-term and long-term treasuries and bonds.” Another big change is AI, or artificial intelligence, which is also making its way into the financial sector. “AI is certainly changing the way that we will operate in this world,” says Laura. “It has been said that a robot can do my job by having you fill out a questionnaire and then giving out financial advice. That part may actually be true. “However, the part that’s not true is that robots can’t exercise compassion and try and talk you through that big down day, or week, month or year and keep you invested. They will only talk to you at a logical level. Of course, Morgan Stanley is definitely investing in AI and trying to help stay ahead of the curve in many ways.” Laura also encourages everyone to be informed on topics and to get news from more than one source and then check those sources. There is a lot of misinformation out there that may lead to making the wrong financial decisions. There are many brokers and institutions that people can turn to for financial advice, but before choosing

someone to handle one’s assets and financial planning, Laura recommends going to BrokerCheck.finra.org/. “From an investment perspective, it’s more important than ever to know who you’re working with and to do your homework and then to take a long-term approach.” Laura and her team also believe in giving back and paying it forward. “The Lake Avenue team are members of the community and we get involved,” she says. “We think that it’s important to do that because we care.” At the end of each year, to plan for the new year, they decide on which causes they wish to support. “There are a number of nonprofits that we are involved with as a team,” she says. “We decide where we want to show our support, where we want to get involved and where we want to go. We have packed boxes for the local food bank and built houses for Habitat for Humanity. We are very involved in our yacht club and so we’re raising money for the Lahaina Yacht Club that burned down during the Lahaina fires in Hawaii.” MB&T Advisors is also a key financial supporter in the local nonprofit community through generous grants and sponsorships with over $2.3 million donated in 2022. When it comes to helping others, Laura often thinks of this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself.” For more information, and to get expert advice and assistance for your financial health, go to Advisor. The traditions of classical ballet are steeped in a rich heritage. Originating in Italy during the Renaissance, royal courts held large social events and ballet became a part of their regular performances. Over centuries its popularity evolved spreading into the French courts, where ballet terminology was established. By the 19th century the art of classical ballet made its way to Russia where technique and artistry were defined. This focus on technique set into motion many changes. The short classical tutu as well as the pointe shoe, as we know it today, were introduced. These changes allowed audience members to witness and appreciate the dancers’ foot and leg work. Finally, in the later part of the 19th century, touring ballet productions made their way to America. One of the first American ballet companies formed by Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine was aptly named American Ballet. This prestigious ballet company evolved into what we know today as New York City Ballet. The creative genius of Balanchine reshaped and pushed the boundaries of classical ballet. His choreography challenged dancers and audience members alike to think outside the box and embrace ballet in a new and exciting way. Through the decades of his leadership, Balanchine groomed many American ballerinas, showcasing them center stage with his innovative choreography. His neo-classical vision for ballet inspired a whole new generation of theater enthusiasts. One of these Balanchine-inspired ballerinas is world renowned dancer, Tiler Peck. Peck, at the age of 16, was selected from the School of American Ballet to join New York City Ballet. Her unique

talent and explosive energy on stage quickly catapulted her through the ranks where she currently holds the highest title as principal ballerina. Pacific Festival Ballet, since 2010, has held the honor of Peck gracing the Fred Kavli stage as a resident guest artist in Pacific Festival Ballet’s “The Nutcracker.” Her powerful performances and technical ability continue to mesmerize audiences year after year. “When Tiler and her partner arrive from New York each year and step into rehearsal, our entire Nutcracker cast rises to a new level,” says Rehearsal Coordinator Deborah Collodel. “The stage seems to electrify, and each dancer becomes a better version of themselves! From the smallest Ginger Cookie to our SoCal professionals, everyone knows what an honor it is to share the stage with these world class ballet superstars.” Peck, known for her classical ballet prowess, is also committed to expanding ballet into new arenas. As a visionary and producer, Peck continues to tour her show in Europe, Asia and the U.S. What she and Artistic Director Kim Maselli have in common are embracing the traditions of classical ballet while pushing dance boundaries toward new and innovative directions. “Ballet, like so many elements in life, is changing and evolving,” says Maselli. “I will always respect the foundation that classical ballet gives us, but I also enjoy the opportunity to paint on a new canvas. The creative process is exciting for everyone involved. Throughout the history of ballet performances, dance has evolved with the times.” A perfect example of creativity and evolving with the times is the Pacific Festival Ballet

"Noah's Ark"

“When Tiler and her partner arrive from New York each year and step into rehearsal, our entire Nutcracker cast rises to a new level.” partnership between Hollywood composer Eric Allaman and Maselli. From 2006 to present, this duo has created three original full-length ballets: “The Sea Princess,” “Noah’s Ark,” and “Camelot.” Each of these familiar stories has been brought to life as innovative theatrical dance experiences. Choreographed to a fully orchestrated score, each production pushes the boundaries of classical ballet by integrating contemporary dance, aerial arts and video montages to enhance the storytelling. The magnitude of each cast, along with elaborate set and costume designs, are a feast for the eyes. Composer Allaman says, “as artists, it is our responsibility to bring something new to the table. that we connect with our audiences, collaborate with fellow artists and hopefully make lasting impressions on the community around us.” “Noah’s Ark,” presenting on May 18, 2024, at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center, will unveil once again the ancient saga of Noah and his family as they witness animals gathering two by two, survive the destruction of the great flood and discover the promise of a new tomorrow! The power of music to uplift, energize and express emotions enhances our lives in countless ways. Singers and songwriters are revered for their ability to connect and celebrate our collective experiences, so the recent passing of American legend Jimmy Buffett left scores of people around the world reflecting on the light he brought to the world through his music. “We’re a modern-day meat and seafood market on a mission to transform the way people shop for and eat protein.” Wild Fork’s unique blast-freezing process preserves food at the peak of freshness to seal in straight-from-thefarm flavor. Stocking the shelves with frozen foods offers many advantages, and the concept is quickly catching on with customers as more people discover Wild Fork’s offerings. Since its launch in 2018 in Florida, the outlet expanded to California in 2020, opening a Thousand Oaks location in 2022 as one of 40 nationwide sites. Read on to learn more about Wild Fork’s unique offerings.

Q. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF FREEZING FOODS? A. The advantages of frozen protein are many. By flash freezing, we can conserve the shelf life—frozen proteins will last a year and exotic proteins, like ostrich and venison, will last 2 years. As there is no waste in our processing, we are very competitive in price; on average we are about 20% cheaper than supermarkets. We’ve amassed quite a fan base of customers that love shopping with us! Buying frozen allows people to have the same variety of foods in their freezer as there are in the store—you can’t buy too much! Many customers have purchased deep freezers, so they have plenty of variety ready to go when they are, thus saving them time and trips to the store.

Q. DOES FREEZING FOOD AFFECT ITS TASTE OR NUTRITIONAL QUALITY? A. People have a misconception about frozen protein. Our blast-freezing process locks in taste, tenderness and nutritional content. In fact, we’re so confident it will be love at first bite that we have a 100% satisfaction guarantee!

Q. WHAT TYPES OF PROTEIN DOES WILD FORK SPECIALIZE IN? A. We carry over 150 different cuts of beef, rib eyes, salmon, shrimp—we have all of the major proteins. We also carry exotic proteins, such as ostrich, venison, yak and wild bison. You can find any protein you can think of in our retail stores. Simply put, Wild Fork offers the best variety of meat and seafood anywhere—we have over 700 products (including 450+ meat and seafood items!), including

everyday grocery staples to rare finds like premium Wagyu and exotic meats that’ll inspire your inner chef. We carry cuts you won’t find anywhere else, for cooks of every kind, including Black Angus, 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef, wild caught seafood, organic and pasture-raised chicken, heritage pork breeds and more.

Q. DOES WILD FORK CARRY OTHER TYPES OF FOOD AS WELL? A. Absolutely! Customers really love our pizzas—made and frozen in Italy—and waffles from Belgium! We have everything you need to complement the main dish— appetizers, sides, seasonings, fruits, veggies, breads and desserts that pair perfectly with the proteins. When you’re hungry and in a hurry, we also offer pre-seasoned meats prepped with chef-inspired flavors alongside heat-and-eat dishes, from microwaveable single-serve meals to larger oven-ready options for the whole family.

Q. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO DEFROST THE FOOD? A. Defrosting is quicker than most people realize—the food is vacuum sealed in trays, so you just pour a little cold water on the tray, and let it sit on the countertop; depending on the size, a simple steak takes about an hour. Other foods can be cooked from frozen, such as the seasoned chicken wings. Customers really love the convenience and quality.

Q. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE QUALITY OF WILD FORK’S SELECTIONS? A. All of our products are hand selected and taste tested. We ensure they are free from phosphates, nitrates and other ingredients you can’t pronounce. We source our beef from farms in Nebraska and Colorado, where the lush grasslands produce some of the top cattle in the world. Our beef and pork is aged to perfection for the best flavor, and then we blast freeze all of our products to lock in taste and tenderness in every bite. Find out firsthand how good frozen tastes at Wild Fork’s Thousand Oaks location at 101 S. Westlake Blvd., or visit WildForkFoods.com to learn more.

SMILE Laser eye surgery is a game changer in laser vision correction. Dr. Khanna is experienced in the use of the only FDA approved laser for SMILE, Visumax. Dr. Khanna is experienced in the use of this laser to carve a sliver of tissue in 30 seconds within the cornea. Cornea trained surgeon Dr.Khanna, skillfully and painlessly removes this thin tissue through a small opening. The recovery is quick with patients returning to work and sports in a day or two. The absence of the cornea flap causes less dry eye. Flapless also makes it safer, as there is less chance of the flap getting displaced. Giving Campaign

G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE

“

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”

Ricardo Means Ybarra

“Without poetry and the arts, we are lesser beings, and the community is lesser for it,” outgoing Malibu Poet Laureate Ann Buxie told the audience at the Changing of the Verse community gathering. At the October event marking the end of her term as Malibu poet laureate, Buxie welcomed Nathan Hassall as incoming 2023-2025 poet laureate and celebrated the succession of local poets serving in the important role. Buxie served as poet laureate from September 2021 to August 2023, preceded by John Struloeff from October 2020 to June 2021, Ellen Reich from March 2019 to April 2020 and Ricardo Means Ybarra from March 2017 to March 2019.

The event featured readings from former poet laureates, including Ricardo Means Ybarra, who shared his poem, “Swimming Laps” and noted, “The poet laureate thing did not happen without all of you—all of you poets, all the artists, the advocates; it’s really a beautiful thing,” he said, adding a special shoutout to Buxie and Reich “for leading us through the valley of the dark, when there was no poetry, very little art; they created the whole thing and kept us going; they had that little lamp out there—we were following you!” Turning over the spotlight to incoming Poet Laureate Hassall, Means Ybarra shared how he was “immediately struck” by Hassall’s writing when he attended a poetry workshop. “There’s this elusive, concrete quality to his poetry, as if 99 moths are landing on you in the dark; it’s beautiful!" Appointed by the City Council in August to serve as the 2023-2025 poet laureate, Hassall first came to Malibu 6 years ago—thanks to love! With a master's degree in creative writing and a focus on poetry from the University of Kent, UK, he has published numerous poems, interviews and reviews in various magazines. His chapbook of experimental haiku—dregsongs from blab cartilage—was published in 2018 by Bones: A Journal of Haiku, and several poems, including "Last Days Before the Wake," nominated for a Pushcart Prize, have been published. He also works as a freelance book editor, helping authors bring their books to excellence in various genres, including poetry, psychology, self-help and memoir, and is co-founder of The Burnal Co., an emotional well-being organization. Now married to the woman who brought him to town, Hassall is eager to step into his new role as poet laureate. “I’m proud to follow in the footsteps of some incredible trailblazers,” said Hassall, who enjoys being part of the Malibu Writer's Circle and honing his craft as a prose writer. In addition to promoting poetry in the community by engaging in initiatives like teaching in local schools, Hassall has attended events such as Caffeinated Verse and was a featured reader at Jubilations where he recited poems inspired by a transformational experience at a "Finding Your Voice" singing workshop at Esalen in Big Sur.

Nathan Hassall

“There’s this elusive, concrete qualit y to his poetr y, as if 99 moths are landing on you in the dark; it ’s beautiful! "

Nathan Hassall and Ann Buxie

During his term as poet laureate, Nathan seeks to expand the number of people in the city partaking in the ancient art of poetry, while also helping to inspire those who are already active in the community. He holds a strong belief in poetry’s potential to transform consciousness, heal the mind and open the gates of dialogue to difficult and often buried subjects. He plans to run workshops that encourage writing poetry as a vessel for increased well-being, inner knowing, and emotional and spiritual growth. He looks forward to leading complimentary poetry workshops open to poets of all levels. “I want to focus on generative poetry, so rather than a critique workshop, it will bring in poems that we’ve already written and we’re going to sit down and we’re going to write together, and we might be able to share within that context,” said Hassall. “I thought that’s the best way that can bring people of all levels and experience and confidence and we can sit and write together and celebrate that, so I want it to be like no barrier to entry for it.” Upcoming events include Caffeinated Verse, with a featured reader, followed by an open mic format in person at the Malibu Library at 11 a.m. This month’s workshop takes place Saturday, December 16, and features Sophie Klahr. At The Ripple Effect: A Generative Poetry Workshop, Hassall will use prompts and examples to explore different forms of poetry, inspire poetry approaches and encourage new works. Jubilations is an open-air event and features selected poets, an open mic and conversation aimed to celebrate joy in a time of whelming possibilities, to give voice to the true nature of vitality modeled on the natural world and to attend to the power of love and joy. Events are open to the public and free of charge. Learn more at MalibuCity.org/Poetry.
