The Lisa Smith Wengler Center for the Arts at Pepperdine University presents unique and diverse performances and exhibits that “make you laugh, cry, think, wonder and dream,” Managing Director Rebecca Carson tells patrons in the center’s 2021-2022 program directory. The power of the arts to deeply move the human spirit and inspire viewers to “think, wonder and dream” plays an essential role whose importance cannot be understated for many, including the namesake and founder of Pepperdine’s Center for the Arts, Lisa Smith Wengler. As a child struggling to survive in war-torn Germany, Lisa found solace from her grim circumstances by escaping to the local movie theater. “I lived by books and movies. In Germany, we saw American movies about California,” recalls Lisa, eyes sparkling as she described her favorite scene—“a girl wearing a shawl and glasses riding in a glamorous car coming down the California Incline with the sun shining and the blue ocean.” Smiling, she shares how she replayed that movie scene in her mind through many years of hardship during her youth.

LISA SMITH WENGLER ON ACHIEVING YOUR DREAMS
ARTICLE BY TRACY MARCYNZSYN PHOTOGRAPHY BY PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY
Born in the small town of Bamburg, Germany, to a prominent businessman in the oil and paint industry and his wife, Lisa and her seven siblings were raised Catholic, attending church on Sundays, even after World War II shattered their lives. Her earliest memories include huddling with her family in the basement while they listened to bombs exploding. “When the bombing stopped, my brother went to the attic and saw the house next door had burnt down,” Lisa recalls. Shortly after, her father, who suffered from Alzheimer’s, passed away, leaving her mother and the family alone.

“All the kids went in different directions; Mom worked as a housekeeper—she’d had a fur coat…” says Lisa, who at 7, was sent to live with an aunt in the country. “After the bombing, I was shell shocked,” says Lisa. “I kept waiting, hoping maybe my mother would visit me. It was a lonely childhood. There was no love…growing up, alone, struggling for my next meal—I was a skeleton and so scared.” Told that her family had all been killed in the war, Lisa was surprised to learn they were actually still alive when her Godmother called her home for Holy Communion. Despite these hardships and feelings of rejection, sadness and loneliness, Lisa never gave up hope. “I never made waves,” she says. “I lived in the library—books kept me alive. Even though I didn’t have money to buy a book, I found a way. I wanted to read, I found books. I wanted to eat, I found food,” Lisa says, displaying a determination developed as a child that has served her throughout her life.
FAITH IN THE FUTURE Lisa credits her will to survive and enduring hope for a brighter future to her belief in a higher power. “I started reading any Bible I could find, and that gave me hope,” she explains. “I needed to know God will take care of me and that helped me to be strong and believe that a better future is coming.” At 17, Lisa married an American man she met while babysitting for an American family. They moved to Los Angeles, and by 21, she had two children, and found herself in an abusive marriage. “I wasn’t safe. I had two kids, no money,” she says, sharing how she once again drew upon her immeasurable will and faith to overcome the odds. “During my longest days, I just knew God was walking beside me; worried about a job, no car, feeding my kids, I was always strong enough to take care of myself—divorce the abusive husband, get fired from a job and have to find another one,” she says. Securing an attorney willing to help her pro bono, she learned to speak English and found a bank teller job at Bank of America. Taking the bus to work, she decided to save $20 each month—it was $90 for a babysitter, $110 for rent… “I decided I needed to make money,” she says.
LIGHTBULB MOMENT As if by divine intervention, Lisa’s life turned a corner at the site of Pepperdine University in its early days. Driving down Pacific Coast Highway one sunny day, Lisa spotted three empty lots that caught her eye. “There was a light at the end of the tunnel,” she says, adding, “I don’t know where it came from, but after I saw those lots in front of Pepperdine, I thought 'I could build a house'.” True to character, Lisa figured out a way to raise the money for the project, splitting the profits with the bank and earning “enough money to buy my next house.” “I’m very creative. I had no choice!” says Lisa, whose petite frame houses a huge spirit, making her a force to reckon with—an attribute that contributed to her success in negotiating a land deal with the board of directors at Southern California Savings, as a woman, more than 20 years ago. Stumbling across an article in The Wall Street Journal about a bank investing in the area “by accident—pay attention when

something comes your way,” she advises, Lisa did her homework and secured the life-changing deal. “I knew what I was talking about; I had my lot plans,” she recalls, noting that the bank manager told her, “You sold me, now you have to sell them.” Presenting at the board meeting, Lisa successfully secured a partnership with the bank to purchase and develop the first three lots at Pepperdine, adding that the deal enabled her to feed her children. “I prayed a lot,” Lisa laughs, noting she’s sharing her story in hopes of inspiring others who may be struggling against the odds. “If I can do it, you can do it too! Anyone can do it,” Lisa humbly adds. Joining forces with Pepperdine, Lisa endowed The Lisa Smith Wengler Center for the Arts in 2002 to promote and share the arts, acknowledging their importance in shaping the human experience. As a member of Pepperdine’s President’s University Board, Lisa aims to make a positive impact on others. “I’ve been so lucky and so fortunate, and so I have to give back,” she says.
PHILANTHROPIC FOUNDATION Committed to helping others in need, Lisa endowed The Lisa Smith Wengler Foundation House in Santa Barbara with the Turner Foundation in July 2021. The Foundation House provides housing and support services for 12 underprivileged youth and two resident assistants while they pursue higher education and a more positive future. This first-of-its-kind home in Santa Barbara brings hope to youth ages 18 to 24 who may otherwise sleep in their cars or on the street. Many of the youth are aged out of the foster system or are experiencing homelessness. The Turner Foundation works with the YMCA's Youth and Family Services Department to provide case management for the participants; additional services include academic support, employment and financial advising, and a sense of community with weekly house meetings and house events. “I like what they do,” says Lisa, who hopes these supportive services and a place to call home will help young adults succeed. Avid in her desire to give back and help others, Lisa continues to help support charitable organizations and good causes. She looks forward to the development of Pepperdine University’s new Switzerland campus, located in an historic chateau. When it comes to overcoming challenges, Lisa advises, “Keep going; use your intuition. I learned God will run the show. Just keep going. God will take care of you.” In her free time, Lisa enjoys gardening, reading (her favorite author is W. Somerset Maugham—“the way he describes people”), being near the ocean, and spending time with her loving husband, two sweet dogs Ming and Victoria, friends, and family at her favorite place—home in Malibu. Lovingly filled with treasures from her heart—a fireplace from England, wall-sized art from Germany and a one-of-a-kind stunning stained glass Church window—Lisa’s home reflects her life well-lived. Her life pays tribute to her indomitable faith and trust that God will make a way. “All along it worked out—God took care of me,” she says. Reflecting on her journey, she feels fortunate to be living the dream. “The name of Malibu is magic. Malibu presents a fantasy—you make your own fantasy, to me it was,” says Lisa, adding, “I got myself a shawl and re-lived that scene with the car coming down the California Incline.”

Friends for Life CSUCI NURSING ALUMNA SAVES LIFE OF A THOUSAND OAKS MOM IN YOGA CLASS ARTICLE BY KIM LAMB GREGORY PHOTOGRAPHY BY WHITNEY HOWARD, CSUCI STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER
After a 12-hour shift in the emergency room of Los Robles Regional Medical Center, nurse Claire Gillette couldn’t decide whether to go home and collapse into bed or take a hot yoga class first. “I work night shift and I never take that class after a shift because I’m tired, and it’s hot yoga with weights,” Gillette said. “But there was a spot open in the class and I thought, ‘I’m feeling into the weights.’” Had Gillette not stepped into that yoga class on October 8, 2021, the husband and two young sons of Thousand Oaks wife and mother Erika Cole would have faced Mother’s Day without her. “Claire is the only reason I’m alive today,” said Cole, who turns 45 on May 8—which this year falls on Mother’s Day. The instructor was leading the class in the last few yoga moves when Gillette, who was in the back, heard a commotion at the front of the class. Class members were gathering around a woman curled up on her mat, her face blue. “Is she okay?” someone asked, followed by a friend’s panicked, “Erika!” Gillette rushed to the front of the room, knelt and searched for the woman’s pulse. There was none. “The music’s going, it’s hot and humid, and I’m screaming, ‘Turn off the music! Cool off the room! Get me an AED! Call 911!” Gillette recalled. Gillette began pumping Cole’s chest, doing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Twice, Cole’s heart rhythm flatlined and twice, Gillette had to shock her with the AED (Automatic External Defibrillator). “I was getting tired and somebody said, ‘She’s got two kids!’ and I thought ‘I’m going to save her if it kills me,’” Gillette said. Gillette was exhausted, but she kept going, as the minutes ticked by. Finally, an emergency crew arrived whom Gillette was well acquainted with as an ER nurse.
“What’s nice about working in Ventura County and Thousand Oaks is the medics and the firefighters who come in, I know them all, and I was so relieved to see them,” Gillette said. Gillette stayed to answer questions for the rest of the shocked yoga class while Cole was wheeled out and rushed to Los Robles. “Everybody else was traumatized and everyone had questions, so I stayed for a long time to debrief the class and the instructor,” Gillette said. “Then I told them ‘I have to work again tonight,’ so I left and napped for about an hour and went into work.” When Gillette arrived, a coworker greeted her with: “Your patient is ROSC (return of spontaneous circulation). Your ROSC is awake and wants to meet you.” Gillette found Cole’s recovery room and was greeted with a groggy, but alert Cole. “When she walked in, she said, ‘I’m pretty sure I broke all your ribs, but I was put in that room to save your life,’” Cole said. “I started crying. My husband and kids will have me around. I’ll get to live to see my grandchildren.” “We were holding hands and she was telling me she loves me,” Gillette said. “We’re best friends now. We talk every day.” Gillette has become a part of Cole’s family, which includes her two sons, Tyler, 15, and Caleb, 11, and her husband of nearly 17 years, Trevor. Gillette is a regular at the Cole dinner table and Gillette and Cole include each other in social gatherings. “We live close to each other. It was like, effortless,” Cole said. “The first time she came over, she was a part of this family. It feels like I have always had Claire in my life.” Gillette grew up in Camarillo, in the middle of five children. She learned about the impact of nursing when she was 17 and her 14-year-old sister was diagnosed with a brain tumor and hydrocephalus. CONTINUED > MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/MAL I BUC OAST
15
“She had to have emergency surgery and we learned, sure enough, it was cancer,” Gillette said. “She is okay now, and the treatment worked. But through all that you meet all of the nurses and surgeons, and the nurses, to me, made the biggest difference and every single one of them seemed to be the happiest with their job.” After Gillette graduated from Camarillo High School, she enrolled in CSUCI’s Nursing program and knew she was where she belonged. So did her instructors. “I vividly remember Claire during her journey as a student nurse,” said CSUCI faculty member Mila Tabije-Ebuen, DNP, MSN, RN. “She was hardworking, diligent, loves to learn, and tenacious. She knew what she wanted to become, and I still remember that day she asked for my thoughts and assistance to become an ER nurse. I saw myself in her and I made sure the opportunity was given to her.” After Gillette earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2018, she went to work in the emergency room at Los Robles Hospital, where Tabije-Ebuen helped her get a clinical internship. After she was hired, the nursing staff at Los Robles also saw Gillette was in the right place. “We love having Claire on our team and to see her growth as an RN,” said Los Robles Director of Emergency Services Erica Rosa, MSN, RN. “She is so hardworking and a great team player. She loves the Emergency Department and goes out of her way to help her patients.” Gillette says the emergency room is an energizing place to work that requires you to use a broad set of skills. “You don’t realize how valuable your nursing education is until you’re actually nursing,” Gillette said. “The knowledge base is so broad. You learn it in class, but once you’re actually doing it in a clinical setting, the nursing knowledge you have is just there, and it comes out so naturally.” Even in yoga class on a moment’s notice. “In that yoga room I always think, ‘I’m not a nurse in here. I can turn my brain off,’” Gillette said. “But in that moment, I realized, ‘Nope! I’m always a nurse.’” Cole was diagnosed with Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, a rare but temporary condition in which the heart muscle becomes stunned or weakened, usually because of emotional or physical stress. “I think, in hindsight, I was really exhausted,” Cole said. “I remember being really run down.” Cole and Gillette want to tell their story to encourage everyone to learn CPR, as “anyone can learn to do what I did,” Gillette said. Because Cole’s heart didn’t stop when she was driving, or home alone, and because Gillette decided at the last minute to attend a class she didn’t normally attend, both women believe there was real cosmic grace in that moment. One of their touchstones is the number 8, as the crisis occurred on Oct. 8, Cole’s birthday is May 8, and 8 is the symbol for infinity. So, on 12-11-21, two days before Gillette’s 27th birthday, the two new friends-for-life got matching infinity tattoos on their arms. “I live for and love my boys,” Cole said of her two sons, “Claire is the reason I have air in my lungs and a beat in my heart. I can’t possibly express what she means to me, but the easiest thing to let everyone know is that Claire and I are truly my favorite love story.”

I was able to work with many age groups, men and women, individual/couples/group therapy. I also learned how to collaborate effectively with colleagues. It has been a great learning experience,” comments a Wellness Center Intern. Another Wellness Center intern shares, “The best part of my internship is seeing positive change and having the support of a team and seeing people benefit directly from my help.” In addition, “The culture of the Wellness Center is diverse and family oriented. I would describe it as community-first, caring, and supportive,” adds a third intern. Meet Linda! BGCM Mental Health Advocate + Youth Ambassador
During the pandemic alone, over 200+ hours have been provided in the form of parenting groups, workshops and SMMUSD teacher support. Throughout May, the BGCM Wellness Center will be hosting a series of activities open to Malibu youth on school campus. We provide a space for aspiring mental health professionals to gain experience working with clients while receiving supervision from licensed professionals in the field. Interns gain experience in many areas, including but not limited to: • Providing direct client services through counseling and/or case management • Facilitating student support groups and presentations for the school district. Leading social emotional learning lessons in the classroom, and providing group work for students to practice their skills
Q: How has the BGCM helped you in your mental health journey? A: BGCM has helped my mental health journey by providing me with programs that give me advice and tips about having good mental health, such as Brent’s Club, which is a program about drug and alcohol prevention for teens. The Club was the place that introduced me to the subject overall, and ever since my first meeting with Brent’s Club during my sophomore year, I have really overcome many hardships utilizing coping methods and solutions to certain situations. Q: Why did you decide to become a BGCM Mental Health Advocate? A: I decided to become a BGCM Mental Health Advocate because I felt that with gaining information about it, maybe I could be of help to someone who may not be feeling their best. I love when teens at the Club come up to me and ask me if they can talk to me because they need someone. That is why I love being an advocate. I think mental health advocates can have a huge positive impact on younger generations. Q: How do you plan to continue your journey as a Mental Health Advocate after graduation? A: I plan to continue my mental health journey the same way I have been doing here in Malibu. I would love to maybe start my own organization or Club to simply talk about mental health and just be an overall advocate for anyone who may want to learn more or become an advocate like I am. Tucked away in the canyons of Malibu, April Mow’s modern white home sits at a 2,800 feet elevation overlooking the Pacific Ocean. On clear days you can see Catalina Island. Inside is a spiritual oasis reserved for sound baths. April, 53 and mother of four, had a spiritual awakening at 16 and began studying. In December 2014, when her 20-year marriage came to an end, a career of life coaching took off. “It is my dharma to be a teacher in this life. I have been life coaching others for 20 years, but in 2015 started stepping into my true power and gifts,” says April. The New Hampshire native has been living in California for 30 years. “It was the hardest time of my life. Doing all my spiritual work helped me through this, with no prescription medicine or therapy,” she says. “With the same techniques, I show my clients what I used to transform my life again.” April primarily does individual life coaching and hosts sound bath ceremonies. Twenty-three lounge chairs, each lined with an ivory sheepskin rug, fill the spaces between gongs and healing bowls in her living room. The sound baths begin with her playing eight planetary gongs. The echoes are deep and the vibrations long, even with April’s gentle taps. She then shifts to crystal healing bowls, playing multiple at a time in a self-crafted flow. The high frequency sounds from the bowls feel like they enter through one ear and exit the other. Next come the Tibetan bowls, or Himalayan bowls, and chimes. The sound bath in its entirety lowers stress, April explains. A 2017 study led by Dr. Tamara Goldsby, Clinical Research Psychologist, concluded singing bowl sound meditation, specifically Tibetan bowls, reduced feelings of tension, anxiety and depression across a group of adults. After an hour of listening and laying with their eyes closed, clients are taken through a guided meditation.
“It’s like getting a massage without being touched,” says April’s client Alex Sahagun. “It amazed me and for some reason I started crying, not a sad cry, but a cry of gratitude.” In 1988, Alex was finishing his psychology degree at UCLA when he was diagnosed with HIV. His brother died four years later in a car accident. He found himself going through a lot of anguish and depression, he said, and that’s when his spiritual journey began. “During the session my heart said this is the person I’m looking for,” says Alex. He found April in March last year and is now her sound bath assistant. “I think people that typically go to other therapists end up coming to me because they’re not getting the results that they want,” says April about her one-on-one clients. Jasmine Abedi has been a client of April’s for about a year. Jasmine thought she would heal from losing a parent with time, but she realized she wasn’t properly healing. “April showed me a different perspective. Doing the sound baths, it feels like your brain is opening and getting filled with light. When you lose a parent, you think after so many years I’m better now, but you have to keep working on it. And this is one of the things that really changed it for me,” says Jasmine. April has the goal of being one of the best sound baths in Los Angeles and wants to do so in a way that would be high quality and a personalized experience, she adds. “It got me through the absolute hardest times in my life, but it also helped me to manifest a life of my dreams. And that’s really where my highest joy comes from,” says April. For more information, visit Manifestingthemagicalway.com and @aprilmeow, or email april@manifestingthemagicalway.com.

Chapter 9: Mr. Malibu With Celebrities Then & Now ARTICLE BY CARY ONEAL
26
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | A RTS + CULTURE
Overflowing with the appreciation and enthusiasm of sharing my journey with you in these Mr. Malibu chapters, here are a few heartfelt and fun red carpet interactions, including recent learning exchanges with celebs of a different kind: those that have made the most impact in my life. At one event, I was speaking with Holland Taylor about how she was actually doing a service to viewers by making them laugh because a study confirmed when people laugh, it releases healing endorphins into the body. She agreed and mentioned Norman Cousins, who cured himself of a fatal disease by laughing, watching Marx Brothers and other comedy movies. I then asked her about playing Charlie Sheen’s mother in “Two and a Half Men” at the time when Charlie was to be leaving the show by way of being killed in the story. She shared how that story plan was cancelled. So, I suggested that they could write into the story that Charlie would instantly reincarnate as Ashton Kutcher so she could be his mother as well, and then Charlie could go on “How I Met Your Mother” and reveal the mother of all mothers. She laughed and said that was a really good story line. In another interview on the red carpet at the Malibu Playhouse, I was joking around with Dick Van Dyke and he was talking about how a viral video on YouTube could suddenly have more exposure than a prime time TV show. I responded by suggesting he do a viral video titled, “How to Star in Mary Poppins for Dummies,” which would feature him at the Malibu Starbucks being picked up by a foxy bombshell in a red Corvette. They speed down the Coast Highway and end up driving off the Malibu Pier. While airborne, she pulls out her umbrella, and they float down to safety. He burst out laughing and said that he actually did propose “Mary Poppins II” to Disney, but they wouldn’t do it even though it was the alltime highest grossing Disney film at that time. In another celebrity interview on a different note, John Paul DeJoria (owner of Patron Tequila and Paul Mitchell Hair Products) invited me to his Malibu home to talk on camera about the Santa
Barbara oil spill that killed dolphins and other sea life. He agreed that we need a public uprising to urge the oil companies to find cleaner solutions and prevent these disasters. I shared with him about how the Diablo Nuclear Plant in San Luis Obispo was actually built on a known earthquake fault line. He was very surprised, and we all felt it should be shut down immediately. During the beginning of the lockdown and through today, I have also been attending awareness empowerment Zoom events. Connecting with such leaders has inspired a life of simplicity without a need to interpret experiences as good or bad; and being able to see from a neutral place how all experiences are a perfect reflection of what is going on inside of me. While Malibu is world renowned for a lifestyle of luxury, fashion and the ‘rich and famous’, what I value most about living in this beautiful town is good health and feeling appreciation for everything around me. Sauntering down the beach and being one with the breath of Mother Nature, and walking the beach at night, soaking in the stars, the moonlight on the ocean, and the breeze blowing through the palm trees, I am filled with the certainty that everything is perfect as it is and there is no other place on Earth I’d rather be. Even my greatest accomplishments are no match for communing with the majesty of sea and sand. This connection offers a buzz saw of simplicity, the essence of our origin that can cut away the mind’s constant commentaries. Fortunate to be hired by global thought leader Byron Katie to produce a pilot for her proposed TV show, she revealed how turning things around and seeing my judgments of others are a product of the limited persona projecting its own restrictions onto others. Katie says whenever we argue with reality, we lose 100% of the time, and that all suffering is the past remembered or the future anticipated. It was powerful seeing how all suffering comes from believing thoughts, perceptions and beliefs as true, and realizing that the only freedom I will ever experience is freedom from my own mind. Simplicity can even save my life and even more accurately, IS my life. Tests have shown that a pilot overwhelmed with complexity and mental activity can be rendered legally blind, even with 20/20 vision and not see what is right in front of him. Continuing my journey into 2020, I came across Louise Kay who is a specialist in embodied awareness in the explorations of Truth. In her online group Zoom sessions, her gentle approach to spiritual awakening and integration supports the process of disidentification from a conceptual self, as well as the release of unconscious beliefs and conditioned behaviors and the integration of repressed emotions and energies in the body. She radiates a dynamic lucidity and is impeccable with her words. During a conversation I had with her in one of her sessions, I asked, “Since you shared an affirmation ‘I am not my body, I am not my mind, I am that which perceives’ (awareness), who is it inside of us that chooses to focus on awareness instead of our thoughts?” She replied by asking me if I can feel who or what is aware of me being aware right now. Louise shares that the awareness that we are never changes no matter what we experience and that we don’t have to “get rid of” pain, but we begin by becoming aware of the sensation itself; where it is coming from. Another person I met is Georgette Cressend in North Carolina who specializes in one-on-one sessions to deal with the full spectrum of human challenges and experiences. She also offers guided meditations. She is exceptionally consistent in offering crystal clear insight into how we create experience, shining light on the perceptions that cause emotional upset and how to practically go beyond belief systems that do not serve our highest good. While continuing to offer the beauty and wonder of life through my photography (MalibuHD.com), I am happy to also share HeartAscent. Explore the website and all that it offers at HeartAscent.com. Cary ONeal’s high-profile events and celebrity interviews reach over 22 million on television, 500,000 via social media and nearly 4 million on YouTube. Novus Anti-Aging Center: Healing Is an Inside Job
ARTICLE BY ALICIA DOYLE
30
H OT SP OT | HEALTH + WELLNE S S
As the CEO and Owner of the Novus Anti-Aging Center, Stephanie Wolff believes in healing the body from within and wants people to take control of their own health—becoming “proactive” rather than “reactive.” “Medicine is good and serves a purpose when needed, but we have what is called sick care, not health care in the United States,” explains Wolff, who has been practicing medicine for nearly two decades. “People only go to the doctor when they are sick, never when they are preventing sickness—I hope to change this viewpoint,” she continues. “There is a saying I use in my practice—‘clean your side of the street’—and what I mean by that is do your part to maintain your health through proper hormone and peptide optimization, diet and exercise. You do just these small things and your body will continue to work like a racecar.” Popular offerings for women include the O-Shot, Viveve, Vampire Facials, Shockwave for Cellulite and PRP for hair restoration or joint pain relief. Stephanie also offers custom Hormone Optimization Programs, taking a deep dive into your body’s specific needs to get you feeling your best again. “Most patients come into the clinic feeling stressed, depressed, lethargic and unclear as to why this is happening,” Wolff says. “They have done all of the things they know, such as diet and exercise; they’ve even had a visit with their primary care physicians but still cannot get to the root of their issues.” Wolff dives into their medical background and orders an extensive lab panel of which she educates patients on each individual test separately and explains why it’s important and why it fails, as well as how to fix it with either hormones, peptides or diet. “I create a personalized Hormone Custom Plan based on the labs, medical history and goals of each individual patient,” she explains, adding that most patients leave her clinic never having experienced such a visit. “They are fully educated and empowered to take control of healing their bodies from within rather than using ‘Band-aid fixes’ given to them by their primary care physicians,” she says. Above all, patients at the Novus Anti-Aging Center discover a new look at life through hormone optimization, peptide therapy and stem cell exosomes, and a personalized, hands-on experience. “There is not a one-size-fits-all in my mind,” Wolff emphasizes. “Everyone is unique and different and requires a customized plan based on their specific goals.”
Wolff, whose background is in Family Practice, graduated in 2003 from Midwestern University with her Physician Assistant Certification, and it was during this time that she realized most of her patients were taking 10 or more medications and were still not feeling well. “Their diabetes wasn’t controlled, their blood pressure wasn’t controlled, they weren’t sleeping, they had no energy and no sex drive—literally no will to live,” she remembers. “I knew the system was failing these people, so I decided to do something different.” Wolff began her journey into hormone optimization and regenerative medicine training with the American Academy of Anti-Aging (A4M) and started to work with these patients on getting them off of their medications and healing them from the inside out. “After a year of changing my methods, I had a waiting list of three months and none of the other physicians in my practice believed in what I was offering,” she recalls. It wasn’t until she went on vacation and left her patients behind when the practice realized the type of patients she was seeing and how “needy” they were. “When I returned to the practice, my primary physician pulled me aside and said, ‘We are not in the business of fixing people; if you fix them, they don’t come back and we don’t get paid’.” In that moment, “I decided I needed to leave this health care system and start my own practice, actually fixing people and being allowed to do so,” says Wolff. “I always wanted to help people as it is something that gives me joy and happiness as well as purpose.” It was then that Novus was birthed. “I knew that those patients would come to find me, those that wanted to be fixed rather than heavily medicated.” To this day, Wolff continuously researches and learns about the latest and greatest medical findings—not only for herself and her family, but for her patients as well. “I want to walk them through the process of healing their bodies from the inside out; I want them to live again,” she says. “This is what separates Novus from any other practice. We strive to make each and every patient feel like our family and want to help them achieve their health care goals.” Wolff is proud that the year 2022 marks the fifth anniversary of the Novus Anti-Aging Center. The Novus Anti-Aging Center is located at 11650 Riverside Drive, Suite 11, in Studio City. For more information, visit TheNovusCenter.com or call 310.954.1450.

TOPANGA CANYON GALLERY PRESENTS “A Walk With Nature”
“A Walk With Nature” is a solo exhibition by local landscape artist Russell Hunziker. The exhibition features impressionistic landscape paintings inspired by Russell’s lifelong love of hiking in the local Santa Monica Mountains, beaches and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The paintings express Russell’s love of nature and his compositions echo the beauty of the natural world with the rich imagination and originality of an artist’s mind. The exhibit combines his paintings with the poetical writings of John Muir. There is an intimacy and honesty about the subjects Russell chooses, as each painting is an expression of love of nature.
