Ben Malkin | Ben.Malkin@citylifestyle.com Robin Chesler | Robin.Chesler@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

This month we focus on the home. What is really interesting is that during the pandemic your home, our home and seemingly everyone else’s home has almost become an extreme focus. The remodeling industry for interior and exterior improvements has boomed. Perhaps it was a search by homeowners for something to feel good about, so why not feel good about the home and garden in which you are seemingly trapped? Certainly, better than cabin fever. Has it all gone smoothly? Of course not. Anyone who has undergone a major renovation of their home knows that even during normal times it is physically and emotionally disruptive. No matter how well you plan, things can always go wrong. Delays occur. What you thought you wanted isn’t what you received. Stuff happens. However, during the pandemic things have been considerably more difficult. After almost a year, the remodeling of our bathrooms has still not been completed. We are still waiting for parts for the shower enclosures and a shower water temperature control was installed wrong and still needs to be fixed. Maybe I need to take more baths like Tuco in the film, “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” At least the new free standing bathtub works. Our cat, Cameo, is on the brink of a nervous breakdown from all of the noise and intrusive strangers. She may need therapy before this is all over. Fortunately, our contractors and our designer have “hung in there.” Windows and doors are finally here (today, as I write this). They were backordered for six months. The showers should be finished by mid-March. We replaced all of our old outdoor garden lighting with high quality lights made in California. FYI, we use businesses that we trust. If you come across them in this magazine it is because we recommend them. We hold them to a high standard, or we do not accept their advertising. So go ahead and feather your nest. Your home has really become your castle.

“Ordinary Joe” Considers Life’s Choices

Who hasn’t imagined where life would have taken them if they had followed a different path? NBC’s “Ordinary Joe,” developed by Oak Park resident Garrett Lerner and his writing partner Russel Friend, explores this premise when Joe Kimbreau (James Wolk) is presented with three choices on the day of his college graduation. His decision might seem minor, but there are consequences. Taking place 10 years later, each episode weaves together Joe’s alternative worlds based on the choice he had made, leading him to different relationships and careers—as a nurse, police officer and rock star. Lerner and his wife, Kim, have lived in Oak Park for over 20 years, and it is where they raised their children, Lily, 19, and Zeke, 21. Zeke, who has type 2 spinal muscular atrophy, inspired one of the main characters.

8

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | A RTS + CULTURE

In all three iterations of his life, Joe’s 9-year-old son has SMA and is portrayed by John Gluck, 13, who has Collagen VI muscular dystrophy. The series creator, Matt Reeves, encouraged Lerner and Friend to make the show personal to them. They directed their writers to do the same—to “bleed on the page” and to share their most vulnerable experiences. “Writing the truth is what makes the stories compelling and real,” Lerner says, noting that from the beginning, he and Friend knew that Joe would have a son in at least one possible life. “It felt like a great way to personalize the story by making Joe a special-needs parent who is closely bonded to his son—just like Zeke and I are in real life,” he says. Lerner has included characters with SMA before in shows he produced, once on the series “House” and once on “Boston Public.” “This was the first time I insisted on authentic casting,” he says. A nationwide search was conducted through organizations like CureSMA (a nonprofit the Lerners are involved with), the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and Laughing at My Nightmare. “We received scores of submissions and John Gluck quickly rose to the top,” Lerner says. Gluck wasn’t a professional actor, but Lerner describes him as a natural. “He’s smart, funny, warm and his ability to think on his feet and ad lib when necessary is still shocking, given his young age. And his singing voice is so moving!” (The duets with Gluck and Wolk, who also does his own vocals, are among the show’s highlights.) Zeke says he appreciates having the son played by someone who has muscular dystrophy. “I think it will give more opportunity for others who have diseases like SMA to get a platform on TV and film,” he says. Because of the multiple timelines, Joe’s son has different names depending on who raised him: Chris, Lucas and—Zeke. “I definitely had to get permission from my son before naming one of the three Zeke,” Lerner says with a smile. “Ordinary Joe” has been praised for changing the way people with disabilities are depicted on screen and was recently awarded the Seal of Authentic Representation from the Ruderman Family Foundation. For example, the show features real equipment used by disabled people. Gluck, for instance, uses his own mechanized chair. One storyline, taken directly from Lerner’s life, had Joe planning a romantic weekend getaway with his wife. But she’s concerned about leaving their son. Joe’s mother volunteers to take over his care. “We realistically portrayed what that means—how to use a lift to transfer a disabled person from their chair to the bed or the bathtub,” he explains. “It’s all very matter-of-fact; just the reality of living life as or with a disabled person.” The series doesn’t shy away from portraying the routine of caring for someone with SMA and does it without making it a big deal. In one scene, the focus is on Joe and Chris’ conversation about the boy’s day at school. While they’re talking, Joe takes off his son’s shoes and leg braces. “Just doing everyday tasks like helping his son get ready for bed,” Lerner says, noting that while he was aware he was qualified

to write about parenting a disabled person, he knew he would need someone with firsthand knowledge to help the writers present Joe’s son in a positive and accurate way. Lerner and Friend hired disability advocates and YouTubers, Shane Burcaw, who has SMA, and his wife, Hannah, as consultants. Lerner says he read Burcaw’s wonderful book, Laughing at My Nightmare, in 2015 and was so moved and impressed with the writing, he reached out to him. They’ve been friends ever since. “Shane provides stories from his own life, reads the scripts and makes suggestions so our writers don’t fall back on common tropes that are at best cliché and at worst offensive,” he says. One of the obstacles the “Ordinary Joe” team faced from the outset was how to help audiences differentiate between Joe’s three lives. Changes in costumes, hairstyles and facial hair provide visual cues. Additionally, the talented actors, led by Wolk, subtly shift how they portray their characters, depending on which universe is featured. Lerner says James Wolk had already shown his versatility as an actor. “We loved how he radiates warmth and kindness but could turn on a dime and deliver a sinister performance in HBO’s ‘The Watchmen’,” he says. “We knew early on he was our Joe, even before we realized he was also a talented singer!” The show also clues-in viewers by color-coding each timeline with a light filter: green for Nurse Joe, blue for Cop Joe and orange for Rocker Joe. Filming during the pandemic presented its own challenges. Only one day after they began shooting the pilot in March 2020, the production was shut down. Eight months later when they resumed, not only did they have to build a new production team, they also had to follow strict COVID protocols, such as quarantining after travel, taking PCR tests three times a week, wearing masks and shields (making communication difficult) and isolating the actors. “We had to get used to the new reality of Zoom meeting rooms, virtual editing and sound mixing, and no gatherings for premiere or wrap parties,” Lerner recalls. Despite the difficulties, Lerner says “Ordinary Joe” has been a labor of love for all involved and has been his most personal writing yet. He hopes audiences continue to watch because they love the characters, but also because “they see their own lives reflected and reflect on how delicate our life paths are—how timing, other people's actions and the decisions we all make add up to write our own life stories.” Has Lerner ever wondered about his own “road not taken?” “The point of the show is to illustrate every possible path in life is filled with highs and lows. There’s no right or wrong path,” he says. “I don’t believe in regrets. It’s a waste of mental energy. As Joe says at the end of the first episode, ‘It’s only natural to wonder what if but I’ve learned it’s more important to ask what’s next?’” Season 1 of “Ordinary Joe” is available on On Demand (NBC) and to stream on Hulu and Peacock. Lightweight, durable and zero maintenance are all attributes that have made aluminum a popular outdoor furniture material. Summer Classics’ wrought aluminum is made from heavy gauge aluminum, features 360-degree, hand-brushed welded joints and is painted with automotive-grade paint for maximum durability. Available in a multitude of colors, this

sturdy furniture often features a brushed pattern that mimics wood grain. Like the resin wicker and teak collections, Summer Classics’ aluminum furniture is a cut above the rest. Fireside Chats CREATE PLACES TO GATHER INSIDE & OUT WITH THOUSAND OAKS FIRESIDE ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

Whether you’re looking for a fireplace, a fire pit or a charcoal or gas barbecue grill, Thousand Oaks Fireside in Thousand Oaks will not only have what you need, but they’ll also have the highest quality brands in stock. “We're known as a luxury store, so we sell highend products,” says Manager Tom Malinowski. As soon as you walk into the store, you’ll experience the exceptional customer service in which they’ve become known for over the past 11 years in business. “We're not out to sell our customers something that we want to sell them,” he says. “We want to hear what their needs are, and one of the first questions we ask is what they want to burn—gas or wood—or if they even want an electric fireplace. We then delve into what size and shape they need and find out if they’re trying to heat a space or they're just using it for decoration. We then pare it down to what their best choice would be.” He and his team feel that every customer is important, whether they’re buying a small tool set or creating a $50,000 barbecue island. “We have a very good reputation and get a lot of repeat and referral business.” With most people gravitating away from wood-burning fireplaces because of the mess and the smell, gas fireplaces have drastically increased in popularity over the years. But, he says, there are always those diehards who love the crackle and pop and real wood smell, so they have the merchandise to cater to them too. The new hot and in-demand products are electric fireplaces. “If you want to add a fireplace in the bathroom or a bedroom, it's very easy to just cut a hole in the wall and put in an electric fireplace rather than running a chimney and doing major construction,” says Tom. The reason people love having fireplaces and fire pits, he says, is that they’re a way of

creating a space to gather. Indoors, it’s nice to sit around a fire and chat, while outside a fire pit or barbecue grill allows homeowners to create an outdoor entertainment space. “You're basically adding livable space to your house,” he says. Entire elaborate outdoor kitchens, he says, are more popular than ever, and Thousand Oaks Fireside often works with contractors and interior designers on higher end homes to provide pizza ovens, grills, refrigeration and more. “As we know, everybody gravitates towards the kitchen in a home and it’s the same outside,” says Tom. “They make everything for an outdoor kitchen today. We either work with contractors as far as sizing everything for the kitchen or we actually build the islands ourselves.” When many people think of a fireplace, they may picture a square or rectangular box, but many of the fireplaces you’ll find at Thousand Oaks Fireside are true works of art. “Fireplaces have gotten very decorative and the focus is not just on function anymore,” he says. “They have become part of the interior design of the home. They now have to blend in with the existing décor and even the outdoor kitchens and barbecue islands have to match the design of the house.” In addition to fireplaces, fireplace accessories and barbecue grills, the store also carries mailboxes. “We have a whole room full of mailboxes of different types and materials that people can choose from,” he says. Thousand Oaks Fireside is part of a three store chain that includes Encino Fireplace Shop in Encino and the Floyd S. Lee Fireplace & BBQ in Pasadena. “ W i n g s O v e r M a l i b u” Raises Student Achievement

Mark your calendar for the Emily Shane Foundation’s annual spring fundraiser, “Wings Over Malibu,” taking place Thursday, April 21, following a pandemic-related hiatus. The event includes an online silent auction, a live auction, clairvoyant readings and more. “You won’t want to miss this entertaining and fun event! Most of all, you will enjoy a lovely evening of socializing while knowing that your participation is helping us serve the middle school students who truly need our SEA Program,” says Ellen Shane, who created the Emily Shane Foundation with her family in honor of her daughter, Emily Shane Rose, who was struck and killed by a car in April 2010. The Foundation’s Successful Educational Achievement (SEA) Program honors Emily’s memory by helping others like Emily who would otherwise “fall through the cracks.” “Emily struggled in the mainstream classroom yet did not qualify or need special education. She fell outside the mold,” explains Ellen, noting they were forced to find outside support because there was nothing within the school system to address their daughter’s educational challenges. Since its inception in 2012, some 1,000 students who could not have otherwise afforded this essential, personalized support that is critical for students to succeed to their best potential have benefitted from the SEA Program, explains Ellen. Now in its 10th year of operation, the SEA Program matches students with vetted and trained mentor/tutors (mostly university students and recent grads) to provide intensive, individualized academic tutoring and mentorship. Serving at-risk middle schoolers at 12 sites throughout Los Angeles and Ventura counties, the program offers essential support that has proven especially important during the pandemic. “The need was always significant; the pandemic has greatly exacerbated it,” says Ellen. “Learning loss associated with online school and many other pandemic-related factors have highlighted the need for this extra support. It also forced SEA to switch to operate virtually, which proved to be incredibly effective. We now offer a hybrid of both in-person and virtual SEA, depending on the specific school site protocols.”

18

G IV IN G BAC K | ED U CATION

In addition to academic support, the SEA Program includes a social element. To embrace Emily’s persona and the foundation’s “Pass it Forward” motto, each student participant is requested to perform one good deed or act of kindness. These are entered on the foundation’s website and posted on a Twitter feed. “Our hope is that this fosters a sense of ‘giving back’ and social consciousness in these youth,” says Ellen. Opportunities to help make a difference for a child reaching their academic potential include the foundation’s “Thursdays in April” fundraiser. The Strange Family Vineyards Tasting Room in Malibu will donate a percentage of all purchases of wine (glass, bottles, cases), whether in person or virtually, on Thursdays in April between 3 and 6 p.m. “Come on out and enjoy a glass of wine, buy a bottle to share with others and relax at the lovely setting at the Malibu Lumber Yard. Or go online to purchase the handcrafted wines offered by the Strange Family Vineyards during the times when donations will benefit the SEA Program,” invites Ellen. For more information about Wings Over Malibu and Thursdays in April, as well as volunteering tutoring opportunities, visit EmilyShane.org, email info@emilyshane.org or call 213.290.5441.

Many customers find the wood plank look and the low maintenance and longevity of concrete pavers to be a winning combination. The low-maintenance, long-lasting high quality of concrete pavers make them an even more attractive hardscape enhancement. Homeowners are often surprised to learn that a properly installed concrete paver driveway can last 30 years or more and offers an additional advantage of seamless repair in case underground utilities need to be accessed. Repairing or replacing an underground sewer line or water main in many cases involves simply removing and resetting the pavers over newly compacted base and bedding sand, saving homeowners considerable time and money.

Cal CustomScapes creates one-of-a-kind architecturally inspired outdoor accents to match every client’s distinctive home and style. From hardscapes and planters to intricate fire pits, beautiful water features, grill enclosures and LED accent lighting, Cal CustomScapes takes pride in crafting quality, unique projects that perfectly enhance and complement any environment. Each project draws inspiration from various artistic and architectural styles, including Spanish Colonial Revival, Art Deco, the Arts and Crafts movement and Modernism. LOCA LLY SOU R CE D | HOME + DE S I GN

WDC Kitchen & Bath Center—a family-owned business founded in 1981 under the name of Warehouse Discount Center—focuses on adapting and innovating to meet the expectations and needs of the communities they serve. “What makes us stand out from our competitors are our incredibly talented sales professionals—some of whom have worked in this industry for over 20 years,” says Marketing Manager Erika Gordillo. The sales team members are directly trained by the appliance manufacturers, so they always remain current with the latest trends and technological developments within the industry. “Our core philosophy is to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of our industry to provide the best available products and services to our communities,” Gordillo re-emphasizes. She notes that due to the global pandemic, a chain reaction of serious supply chain shortage has caused an unprecedented increase in price—up to a 20% increase in fact. “Unfortunately, this development is completely out of our control,” Gordillo says. “What we can control is how we react to these global changes. Very early into the pandemic we began to stock up our inventory. We wanted to make sure our communities had the necessary items they needed to get through this global event.” In recent accolades, WDC Kitchen & Bath Center won The Luxury Products Group Showroom of the Year for 2021. “What a pleasant surprise,” says Steven Loria, director of plumbing at WDC. “There are so many showrooms in LPG that are deserving of this award. We are thrilled and honored to receive this recognition.” The WDC Kitchen & Bath Center warehouse in Moorpark is now bursting at the seams with products that are reasonably priced and are ready for local next-day delivery. With over $20 million in stock, WDC is well stocked with most brands and models. “Many of our competitors ask customers to wait up to eight months for appliances,” Gordillo says. “Our customers will benefit from our swift reaction to these global

events by purchasing hard-to-find items at reasonable, competitive prices.” For instance, you can find anything from a basic 30-inch slide-in range to a custom built-in 48-inch professional grade range with double ovens. You can also find anything from a small upright freezer for your garage to a built-in, custom paneled, all-freezer and all-refrigerator set that will blend in with your home’s cabinetry. The same applies to any of WDC’s other product categories: dishwashers, laundry sets, outdoor cooking, plumbing fixtures and even mattresses. “Remodeling your kitchen or bath is on the rise in record numbers during this pandemic,” says Gordillo, adding that sitting at home in quarantine really sheds light on all the flaws in your home. “So, why not get it fixed or updated? Some homeowners might think that the supply chain shortage and inflation might hinder their plans, and they may be right to some extent,” she says. “The key is to plan ahead and do the research.” A dream remodel varies depending on the dreamer. “My idea of a dream remodel can differ vastly compared to my neighbor or the homeowner across town,” says Gordillo, adding that there is no right or wrong when it comes to remodeling your home. “The end goal is to create a space that brings you and your family comfort, peace and joy,” she says. “Your home should be an escape from the outside world; a safe zone and a place to enjoy your time with your family and friends. The possibilities are only limited by your budget and your imagination.” The best advice she can give is to talk to a sales professional at WDC and allow them to guide you through the maze of possibilities. “At the end of the day, you will find the products that match your lifestyle at a price that fits your budget.” WDC Kitchen & Bath Center is located at 14349 White Sage Road in Moorpark and 30621 Canwood Street in Agoura Hills. Chapter 8: Mr. Malibu Surfs the HeartAscent Wave

32

I NSP IR E D BY | A RTS + CULTURE

It is a beautiful life-changing and heartfully received gift to have this opportunity to share my journey with you in these Mr. Malibu chapters. I love recognizing the perfect synchronicity between what I’m feeling on the inside and what I’m witnessing on the outside, especially on the beach in Malibu. Here, I share three such divinely orchestrated experiences.

GRATITUDE FEST One clear, hot July day as I was sauntering along Zuma Beach, without warning, an internal “gratitude festival” burst within me. I began to thank God out loud. “God, thank you for letting me wake up today in the most beautiful place on Earth. Thank you for all the beautiful people in my life and everyone here in Malibu. Thank you for this beautiful home, and thank you for giving me a healthy body to witness all this beauty. Thank you...” Suddenly, while experiencing this gift of gratitude, seven dolphins came swirling in toward a clear, green wave right in front of me. It was as if they were saying, “Yes! We feel the same way!” Their electric presence and playfulness out-pictured the grand celebration I was feeling. I turned on my camera and zoomed in just in time to capture two dolphins surfing into the wave. The majesty and graceful power of their gliding through the water captivated my heart with an empowering exhilaration.

DOLPHIN DANCE Recently, while at home practicing meditation, I began to feel restless. The urge to just jump up and go out to the beach arose and I followed it. I noticed a thought questioning whether or not I should follow this urge, and, simultaneously the thought was overpowered by the infinite beauty of Mother Nature calling to me. As soon as I got to the beach, a pod of dolphins began leaping out of the water in full aerials! Their underbellies caught the light and reflected the green iridescent ocean. This vision gave new meaning to the cliché, “a sight to behold.”

PELICAN LOVE A few days before Valentine’s Day, I was feeling the urge to connect deeply with nature and decided to go for a beach walk. A few minutes later in perfect timing, I just happened to snap a photo of pelicans seeming to make a heart-shaped formation for Valentine’s Day!

INSPIRED ENDEAVORS These experiences, along with thousands of Satsung and AA meetings, have led me to take a new approach to sharing my appreciation and insights. This new collaboration in my journey is called HeartAscent and PsyberCeuticals (HA and PsyC). My first endeavor in bringing HeartAscent/PsyberCeuticals to the world was writing the book, HeartAscent, available on Amazon. The HeartAscent.com website, videos and online meetings followed. What is HeartAscent? HA is a group sharing for anyone who wants a safe place to express their inspiration and resolve their challenges. HA provides the opportunity to come together in an open, safe and caring environment where people can be however they are. HeartAscent offers a space for like-minded people with the conscious intention to expand awareness of our thought and

emotional lives and examine how those things are connected to what’s happening externally in our everyday lives. I have found that in these group meetings other people’s experience can speak directly to what’s happening in my life, mirroring and shining the light of Awareness on new ways of seeing and thinking. This flow of Awareness offers the possibility of experiencing the Truth of what we really are (I hesitate to use this word given the many connotations around it), which is Pure Love, or, in perhaps more acceptable terms, Pure Consciousness. My experience is that each one of us is an expression of Infinite Love. When we’re in a group whose intention is to be sincere and honest, we are more likely to feel safe enough to share what we’re really feeling and thinking, what’s inspiring us and what’s bothering us. It seems to me that all of us want to resolve these challenges, whether minute or magnanimous. A HeartAscent group is an invitation to resolution, where everybody is interested in everyone’s healing, everyone’s transformation and everyone’s empowerment. As an all-inclusive fellowship, HeartAscent embraces all religious, philosophical and political associations of those who desire to embody conscious awareness. We consciously refrain from using labels such as “obsessive thinking” or any of the institutionally-branded behaviors related to emotional/physical pain, anxiety and depression. HeartAscent welcomes our emotional and perceptual patterns without any judgment of them. With this freedom, we experience a more balanced approach toward ourselves and others. With new information, insights and understanding, we are inspired by even the “hard things.”

CREATING PSYBERCEUTICALS A StarBrain expert system (described in “Mr. Malibu Chapter 4”), PsyC compiles unique personality information in a database and cross references other proprietary databases to produce a digital interactive replica of our psyche. Leading psychologists and computer scientists have expressed that PsyC can be used as an expansion to their Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Trauma Therapy services. Just as every great inventor sees things from a new, unbiased perspective, I too, through PsyC, will provide original views into one’s emotional and mental patterns (I say “will provide” because PsyC is not yet operational as we currently raise funds for its development). Similar to the way people enjoy learning how their astrological chart depicts them and to methods used by dating services to match couples, PsyC will provide a quantum leap of information about a person’s supportive qualities. It will gently introduce the inner matrix of personality dynamics, offering resolution scenarios to the unconscious patterns associated with disharmony and discontent. We’re not just “rocketing into the fourth dimension,” as described by Bill Wilson. We’re popping like popcorn to realize we are infinite in our true nature and there is no finality to this journey of expansion. While continuing to offer the beauty and wonder of life through my photography (MalibuHD.com), I am happy to also share HeartAscent. Explore the website and all that it offers at HeartAscent.com. Cary ONeal’s high-profile events and celebrity interviews reach over 22 million on television, 500,000 via social media and nearly 4 million on YouTube.
