Anytime that there is a community-wide emergency or disaster, individuals and families dealing with economic shortfalls and health challenges suffer the most. It may be bad enough during what could be considered “normal times,” but after almost two years of pandemic-induced displacement, things could easily slide from challenging to bad to awful. Nonprofits that support those in need play an indispensable role in mitigating the economic, health or hunger pain and suffering of individuals and families most in need. There are other roles that nonprofits play. When budgets are cut, very often the first thing to go is anything related to the arts. Mistakenly the arts are often not thought of as “critical,” so they are the first to go without any thought given to what the arts mean to our quality of life. Music instruction in our schools, art projects, creative writing programs, dance companies, stage companies and many others can end up cutting back or going under. The funding to keep all of this from coming apart comes in good part from the generosity (money and time spent) of those in our communities who have the resources to be very generous and also often from those in the middle who simply have the compassion to share in part from what they do have. Our communities are rich in generous people. In this issue we celebrate many of our generous philanthropists. Often when we think of philanthropy, we think in terms of old inherited wealth…individual or from foundations. What we have locally are people who very often built their own success and now have the vision, generosity and compassion to share it. Moving on to what is still a timely topic, essentially, “Are we there yet?” As I write this at the end of January, the answer is no. The highly contagious Omicron variant of the Covid-19 virus turned everything on its head. From happily and carefully venturing forth and going to restaurants, traveling to wine country and live events, we went backwards. Robin and I again have a healthy dose of cabin fever and every report of infections dropping is met with some degree of skepticism and a larger degree of hope. By the time you read this, we hope we are back in circulation.

Contributing to Community: Celebrating Local Philanthropists Malibu is home to numerous nonprofits that exist to improve and enrich our quality of life. Thankfully, generosity is also alive and well in the ‘Bu, in the form of local philanthropists who support area organizations and enable them to keep up their good work. Here, we recognize some of our community benefactors and hope you will join us in thanking them for all they do!
Organizations Supported: The Malibu Foundation, Plastic Oceans, The Boys & Girls Club of Malibu I support organizations that I believe are trying to make the world a better place: The Malibu Foundation: After the Woosley Fire in 2018 devastated our community, organizations such as The Malibu Foundation assisted hundreds of families in rebuilding their lives. They replanted trees and provided otherwise unavailable services. Plastic Oceans: The past couple of years of Covid has been hard on everyone and the beaches are no exception. The amount of litter at the beach (and on the streets) feels overwhelming. Plastic Oceans has helped remove thousands of pounds of litter and plastic that otherwise would have ended up in the ocean. The Boys & Girls Club of Malibu: With a few campuses located in Malibu, BGCM offers a plethora of free programs, including before and after school care. These programs are fundamental to our youth and our community.

Organization Supported: California Wildlife Center We have been supporters of California Wildlife Center since 2020, when we joined the organization as Conservation Circle Members. This membership program is imperative in helping CWC care for over 4,300 sick, injured and orphaned wildlife patients each year. As Malibu residents, we see firsthand the variety of wildlife in our neighborhood. It always brings us so much joy to watch these animals thriving in the wild. Unfortunately, when one of these wild animals needs help, there are very few resources. We are so happy to donate to an organization who is trained and equipped to help wild animals in need. The work that is done by CWC is so important to this community, and we celebrate every patient that is successfully released back into the wild.

Dr. Carrie Hastings founded Sport Psychology in Westlake Village last fall in order to provide athletes with the mental fortitude needed for peak performance. As a former student athlete and licensed clinical and sport psychologist, she understands both personally and professionally how mindset impacts physical output. “I was on the track team at the University of Notre Dame and competed at a high level,” she says. “We didn’t have a sport psychologist and I don’t think it was even prioritized back then. I know I could have used one.” Dr. Carrie and her team of clinicians work with athletes at all levels from youth all the way to professional. For the past four years, she’s been the team psychologist for the Los Angeles Rams. “At the professional level, they’re starting to prioritize the mental, emotional and performance aspects and how those things combine to help you perform at your best. I wanted to provide this type of support for athletes of all ages and abilities.” Although there’s still a long way to go, she says the tide is changing to the point where it’s not as taboo to name what’s going on and seek help for it. “In the past, it was seen as a sign of weakness and now, rather than feeling you have to bury it or hide it, we’ve realized it’s better to recognize it and do something about it. There’s no shame in that,” she notes. Here, Dr. Carrie explains what her facility can do to assist athletes in reaching their goals.
ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI
Q. What do you and your clinicians offer? A. Sport Psychology offers one-on-one and group counseling, as well as workshops and guest speakers. The one-on-one structure is nice in providing a confidential space for athletes to develop relationships with their clinicians and feel that they can share anything. The group work is important because they can hear from their peers about potentially similar CONTINUED > MAR CH 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/MAL I BUC OAST

struggles and not feel as alone or isolated. They can also learn how to put words to situations and articulate problems.
Q. What are some common psycho-emotional factors that create obstacles for athletes? A. The most common psycho-emotional factor I see with athletes is anxiety, and that often stems from issues within the sport, their level of ability or goals, and even their relationships. There are also issues that originate outside of the sport and get carried into the work of an athlete, so we work to cope with those and provide tools that they can incorporate into their sports regime to help regulate the anxiety. In addition to anxiety, I see depression as well as just general stress, so we help athletes manage those. We also assist with communication skills—how to effectively communicate with coaches, teammates and officials. Q. Tell us about your clinicians. A. We currently have 10 practitioners and they all have at minimum a master’s level education within the realm of sport, exercise and mental health or they’re in the process of getting that degree. We have some doctorate level practitioners as well. Our staff has a great range of experience and all were athletes themselves so they can relate to what our clients are experiencing. Q. Why did you start your own library inside of the facility? A. The Hastings Library of Sport Psychology was something I really wanted to provide because there still aren’t a lot of sport psychology resources available. So, I’m developing a collection where people can come and browse or check out a book. It’s a regular working library that anyone in the community can visit, buy a library card, and check out books. Q. Why is mindset sometimes even more important than skills when it comes to being successful in a sport? A. Skills are learned and it’s the physical exhibition of what you’re capable of doing. The mindset is crucial and often neglected because you don’t always see it in a tangible way like with physical skills. Mindset is so influential on performance, and whether it’s knowing how to help yourself cope with failure, loss or injury or how to build resilience—all of that is mental and those skills are just as important as physical techniques.

Explore & Refresh at Cabo’s Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf & Spa Resort

Not every Cabo resort is made the same (and we have stayed at many). What sets Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf & Spa Resort apart is its intimate location that is ideal for a romantic getaway or weekend trip with a group of close friends. Set at the tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula and about a 40-minute drive from the airport, the setting is an enchanting oasis of palm trees and desert flora situated on a secluded 1.2-mile stretch of creamy sand and pounding Pacific Ocean surf. After passing through several security stations to arrive at the luxurious adults-only compound, we came upon a tree dripping with hanging Mexican glass hearts (made from a local factory from the hotel’s recycled bottles), greeting us along with grandiose arches that perfectly frame the ocean view. After a welcome drink, my husband and I are escorted to the new VIP Whale Watching Lounge for sunset cocktails high above the ocean. Since Los Cabos is just a little over a 2-hour flight from Los Angeles, “Cabo” makes an easy destination for a long weekend or more. Currently, Americans need to show a negative Covid test one day before returning to the U.S., and the hotel arranges that right on site. As we make our way to our room, our assigned personal butler checks in with a text to ensure our needs are met. Dulce seems like the perfect name for this sweet lady who contacted us prior to arrival to ask about our preferences, from custom pillows to any special requests. Somehow she knew our favorite bottle of Mezcal, as 400 Conejos was waiting for us in our room with apple, tomato and lime slices and various salts. Part of a stay at The Towers is having this all-day butler service to provide anything your heart desires. It was hard to want to go to bed as the liquid black night sky cascaded with twinkly radiant stars thanks to less light pollution in this part of the world. Yet I didn’t want to sleep in and squander the limited winter sunlight; my yoga session the next morning began at 7 a.m. and my husband was off to golf at 6:30 on the resort’s 5-year-old Jack Nicklaus Signature Design Course. While racing to one of the beach beds may have been the first thing that crossed my mind, my early morning gentle meditative stretch yoga combined with the ocean air allowed all the airplane kinks and recent stressors to melt away. Three of us early risers had the entire beach to ourselves. The resort’s complimentary yoga began with calming oils and a bold reminder that all was right in the world as the sunrise rays streamed across the ocean’s horizon filtering through the clouds. The Quivira Golf Club has quickly established itself as one of the best new courses in the world, earning a well-deserved reputation for dramatic seaside vistas and challenging holes carved out of the cliffs and dangling over the ocean. Built on the tip of the Baja Peninsula with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean from virtually every hole, the dazzling 7,085-yard layout was voted to Golf Digest’s elite roster of the “World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses.” CONTINUED >

My post-yoga bliss was followed by my hilarious attempt to catch a fish from the beach, part of their Hook and Cook experience. In my case, the chefs on the beach satisfied my failure at 8:30 a.m. with their own fresh catch grilled with veggies, ceviche and guacamole. By noon my luck changed as I spotted a pod of whales offshore showcasing their blowhole sprays. The magnificent creatures jumped straight out of the ocean while one slapped its tail continuously like it was showing off for the panga boats. Witnessing the largest and oldest animals on Earth never grows tiresome. After a few dips in the circular pools to cool off my roasting pasty winter flesh, I relish in the alone time and head to the resort’s Armonia Spa for a massage where expert hands lull me into deep relaxation. After an hour of gratifying peace, I spend time melting in the eucalyptus steam room until I can’t take the heat anymore and then challenge myself to shock my system with the freezing cold plunge pool. In health circles, the ice plunge has become a trendy way to increase circulation, boost the immune system and help jolt metabolism. While I’m not sure if any of those are true benefits, I wanted to pretend I was Laird Hamilton and see how many minutes I could make it in the Arctic waters. After my body became numb and my mind took over counting the seconds, a few minutes was enough before I catapulted myself into the hot jacuzzi. Sipping a Mezcal fruit sorbet and devouring Mexican chocolates while a blazing red sunset melted into the ocean below at the end of the day reminded us once again how happy we were to be alive. After sunset we sidled into the fancy candlelit Mexican restaurant, LaFrida with sophisticated Frida Kahlo-inspired décor, satisfying our bellies with authentic delicacies like barbacoa, local fish and squash blossom soup. Guests have access to Pueblo Bonito’s sister properties, including the family friendly Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach next door and two more in the center of town (Pueblo Bonito Rose Resort & Spa

and Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos Beach Resort) located on Medano Beach where all the action is and within walking distance of downtown Cabo San Lucas. We tried breakfast at the resort’s Palomas Restaurant one morning beachside situated right in front of the famous Los Arcos. It’s the best time to go as there are less crowds and the cascading ethereal light illuminates the spectacular rock formations offshore. After a few days of relaxation, we gained a different perspective of Cabo by setting sail on an alluring cruise down the coast with Cabo-Adventures.com. This sailboat afforded us up-close views of the Land’s End Arch, Lover’s Beach, sea lion colonies, and Cabo’s famous jagged rock formations that erupt from the sea. While sipping a mimosa, we gaggled over properties of the rich and famous expertly carved into the coastal cliffs and marveled at the grand resorts from a sea-bound perspective. Whale sightings added to our incredible day on the water as the marine mammals gave us a show in the distance. For those itching to do more than just relax, the all-inclusive experience includes many fun options like tennis, corn hole, hiking with a guide, fitness sessions, Spanish lessons and classes like cooking and cocktail making. Ideal for destination weddings and private events, the property also features a luxury all-inclusive plan that includes not only Pacifica’s four restaurants, but also the restaurants at the three sister resorts nearby. Our last night included a dreamy private dinner set up on the beach with new friends and our toes in the sand. A server passed daiquiris as the starry sky stretched above us. After a multi-course meal, the revelry continued in the resort’s handmade sand firepit as my husband and I staked and toasted fat marshmallows to make S’mores. I envisioned us happily returning to Pueblo Bonito Pacifica with our closest friends and family.

Get 20/20 Vision Again With Painless Lasik ARTICLE BY ALICIA DOYLE
26
LOCA L’S CH OICE | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S
Dr. Rajesh Khanna
Painless Lasik eye surgery—a new procedure which is on the groundbreaking, cutting-edge of technology—is now available at the Khanna Vision Institute. “Yes, painless Lasik eye surgery is here—my patients are loving it, and so will you,” says Dr. Rajesh Khanna, the founding Medical Director of Khanna Vision Institute. Since 1997, he has been doing Lasik eye surgery, which reduces one’s need for contact lenses and glasses. “Just when I thought I was pretty bored with Lasik because it’s become routine, out comes this brand new thing from Germany using a laser which does the (procedure) in only 15 seconds,” Dr. Khanna explains. During that short time, there is “no pain, no redness, no loss of vision.” He further emphasized that this new procedure is “the biggest breakthrough, which is making me smile ear to ear.” Since the time Lasik was invented in the previous millennium, “we’ve had to hold the eye with pressure to make the cornea flat,” says Dr. Khanna, noting that the cornea is the clear front part of the eye, which is curved. “And for our machines to work…the cornea had to be flat, just like a flat piece of wood, so the machine could go across in a linear fashion.” Such pressure left redness in the eyes, “which took weeks to go away and looked cosmetically unsightly.” This modern breakthrough advanced technology addresses the fact that the cornea is curved and utilizes a laser that can move on a curved surface. “So it does not cause any pressure on the eye to flatten the cornea,” Dr. Khanna says. “Instead, the laser docks onto the cornea on the curvature without applying force on the rest of the eye, and in 15 seconds, it makes it flat… within 30 seconds you’ve transformed the eyes with no need for glasses or contacts ever.” Another benefit of Lasik surgery is the fact that it can save money, because the cost of contact lenses, frames and
contact solutions can add up over time. Since Lasik reduces the need for eyeglasses and contacts, people can save money every year by not having to replace lenses or frames. Additionally, “if you are self-conscious about how you look when wearing your glasses, Lasik can take care of that by getting rid of those glasses,” Dr. Khanna notes. Also, “it is much easier to play sports after Lasik—say goodbye to goggles. No more changing your frames or fretting about knocking them off. You don’t need to worry about contacts falling out during events.” Dr. Khanna is so confident about this procedure, “we give a lifetime guarantee,” and his hope is that “this new technology will bring out all the chickens who have been scared of Lasik.” He noted that he most recently performed this procedure on a 17-year-old boy who had been told elsewhere that nothing could be done for him. “Within three days after Lasik, he has improved…he’s now 20/20 and we’re very happy for him.” While the thought of having a laser used on one’s eye sounds scary, “it’s not near as bad as you might think,” Dr. Khanna says. “In fact, one of the reasons that Lasik is so popular is because it has very minimal discomfort. You may occasionally feel a little pressure, but it’s no more than how it feels when you rub your eye when you’re tired.” People can expect “significantly improved vision” the day after surgery. “You’ll be able to play sports, go surfing, even skydiving,” he said. “Your life will be transformed. Don’t hesitate to call 805.222.7785 or visit us at KhannaInstitute.com to begin the first step towards the rest of your life.” The Khanna Vision Institute is located in Beverly Hills, Westlake Village, Moorpark, Oxnard, Sherman Oaks and Inglewood. CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach is: Abundant
Simplicity. Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you.

Chapter 7: Mr. Malibu Surfs the Secret Tsunami

Though Mr. Malibu events and interviews were flowing along swimmingly, I suddenly found myself surfing the secret tsunami of shifted perceptions in the value of “celebrity” social currency. It was becoming less effective in attracting real currency. Through the psychological “electron microscope” of social media, a seismic shift was flooding the celebrity-driven playing field with shrinking relevance and scattered audiences. This lessening of significance seemed to be erupting out of the velocity and volume of global content exchange, particularly through social media. Continuous acceleration of diverse “micro-burst” content on social media “walls,” combined with our everyday distractions, were the classic formula for an increase in change blindness, unbeknownst to most. Suddenly entire industries like music, book publishing, advertising, TV and people going to movie theaters were taking quite a hit. What has been arising from huge global content exchange is that no matter the language or country, more and more people
were thinking the same things. I refer to this as “same-ology” or “global group conscience.” As life would have it, I was led into a dynamic employment opportunity at StarSite Inc., created by a Malibu resident who owns the patent to iTunes. My Mr. Malibu experience, 30-year exposure to advanced psychology paradigms, and my God-given outside-the-box, creative thinking was put to the test at StarSite. The company was created to monetize social media for superstars. But when we “looked under the hood” of superstar-fan interactions, something was amiss. For example, a rock star with 50 million Facebook fans would post something and receive 12,000 likes. This revealed how real those fans are and whether they were really “following.” The observation focal point at StarSite was a fantastic view into the multi-industry challenge taking place. The head of Goldman Sachs, the CEO of the largest advertising corporation in the world, major talent agencies, Universal Music and even the rock CONTINUED > MAR CH 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . group Linkin Park, among many other significant people and companies, all came to StarSite anxiously looking for ways to generate a profit in light of what was happening. I was fortunate to generate a meeting with Universal Studios’ President Ron Meyer and the owner of StarSite and another meeting at Larry Ellison’s Carbon Beach home. We generated 16 million views advertising a Universal movie, but we could not obtain stats as to how that increased box office sales. We explored making “micro movies” with Mr. Ellison’s media company, which itself was shuttered. That did not stop me from engaging with numerous superstars, such as Roger Federer, Matt Damon, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Shakira, Cristiano Ronaldo, Selena Gomez and many others, to utilize our platform. That shined valuable light on the fact that none of them were content creators specifically for and monetizable via social media. This is all in light of Facebook not paying a cent for all their millions of fans’ traffic. I learned one bright side of social media is that it reveals the perception of “celebrity” is shifting from one that stars in a movie to how positive an impact one’s words and actions are. Celebrities that engaged in philanthropic efforts (with Oprah and Elton John at the top of the list) were gaining much more ground than those who did not. This was actually my main impulse for creating Mr. Malibu in the first place—to bring forth a persona engaging in this type of activity, especially celebrating the “Divine Malibu” imagery through photography and consciousness-lifting events and expressions. At StarSite, I was asked to research the psychology of social currency in a social media environment. I was then asked to incorporate it into a Mr. Malibu book, Mr. Malibu Reveals All on 40 Superstars. I was urged to utilize “wild and crazy” attention-grabbing articulation while simultaneously revealing a new and more truthful view into their narratives, very different from Wikipedia. The back cover of my book reads: “This book seeks to cause catastrophic wreckage to your perceptual restrictions.” Almost every day for a year while writing this book I broke into hysterical tears of laughter about what I wrote. Ron Meyer phoned me on a Sunday morning and told me he read the book and loved it.

In another fun project at StarSite, I was able to generate a Super Bowl commercial after winning the participation of Neymar Jr., the third top soccer player in the world to try to break the world field goal record kicking a U.S. football right before the Super Bowl. We reached over 30 million people worldwide and it led to a Super Bowl commercial the following year with Neymar Jr. kicking the football. My ah-ha moment at StarSite came when I saw the thing that causes social media to fail is the same thing that drives obsessive-compulsive behaviors: the lack of engagement. My background in group-sharing dynamics led to the creation of HeartAscent, a quantum leap in group sharing and PsyberCeuticals and an advanced engagement system that will utilize unprecedented personality insights to generate valuable internal transformation. The most important thing I learned at StarSite was how obtaining the right statistics and utilizing predictive analytics would save lives. One example is how AA (although it does save some lives) is in dire need of statistics identifying why so many don’t stay or “recover.” Other critical statistics are needed to see the ongoing impact of so many being exposed to “zero caloried” content both in “mainstream media” and social media. Viewers are not able to see how all this leads to lack of engagement and the challenges caused by that. With certain types of stats, we could bring better quality engagement for transformation. If people could identify what type of focus and participation would increase their sense of purpose and understand how having a sense of purpose is the most important thing a person can have if they want to heal from any sickness, we can join together to grow, evolve and thrive more with HeartAscent and PsyberCeuticals. Cary ONeal’s high-profile events and celebrity interviews reach over 22 million on television, 500,000 via social media and nearly 4 million on YouTube.
