LIFESTYLE LETTER

Cheers to 2022!

January 2022 PUBLISHER S

Ben Malkin | Ben.Malkin@citylifestyle.com Robin Chesler | Robin.Chesler@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Let’s go into the New Year with our glass half full. As I write this letter in late November the emotional and economic roller coaster ride associated with the pandemic continues with a new variant. In spite of this, most of us eagerly embraced the Thanksgiving holiday and the chance it offered to connect with family and friends. Black Friday brick and mortar shopping has also been huge. Robin and I have enjoyed attending business events and seeing clients and associates we have not seen in person for the past 18 months. Phooey on Zoom meetings!!! Live entertainment and dining out is also rebounding. There is a constant that will make all of this reawakening continue. Vaccination. Masks. Adhering to safety protocols as much as possible. Every event we have attended has required proof of vax or a test within 72 hours. Without that stipulation we would not have gone. Nor would we have shared Thanksgiving with an unvaxxed relative. All of this comes with a caveat—nothing is 100%. However, I like our odds for health, wellness and safety a whole lot more this way. Our January issue has a focus on health and wellness—all kinds and a variety of approaches and solutions. An important part of our health and wellness message for 2022 is to prevent something before it happens. Don’t wait to treat high blood pressure or ailments caused by being overweight and out of shape. Change your lifestyle before your lifestyle takes years off of your life. Save your marriage and relationships before hormone imbalances turn you into a lump on the sofa. There really is such a thing as “anti-aging”…you may get older but you do not need to slide down the rabbit hole. You can be younger at 70 than some folks are at 55. As I said last month, I do not want to “live in interesting times.” However, I do prefer good times. We can all make that happen. Have fun in 2022. Be responsible and be safe for yourself and others.

Chapter 5: Mr. Malibu’s Nine Lives

14

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | A RTS + CULTURE

Ever since I heard that the subconscious mind actualizes our thoughts—good, bad and especially repetitive thoughts—I’ve experienced a deep passion and appreciation for the power of thought and the spoken word. A chord rang true with the realization that whatever manifests in my external life is the result of my internal patterns, beliefs, perceptions and, most of all, the conscious awareness of my true nature. My late older brother, Chris (a fellow Leo), used to tell me, “You’re not just a Colony Cool Cat, you’re a lion. One of these days you’re going to really make a dent.” Synchronistically, in 1998 at a Malibu Vineyard Church concert (where the likes of Bob Dylan and Lifehouse performed), a prophet, Michial Ratliff, knowing absolutely nothing about me, walked up to me and said, “I know this is going to sound sort of strange, but we’re seeing landslides in Malibu up and down the coast highway. People in freefall, in financial ruin, jumping out of windows and people suffering from identity crisis, both younger and older generations.” As if he were accessing a cosmic seeing eye, he continued, “Your net... net...

networking ability is going to be like a huge safety net for so many of these people. This lion will rise up and roar.” Ratliff’s expression about people in freefall seems to eerily match the global vibration of 2020-21 and his statement about identity crisis is an uncanny reference to the known outcome of overexposure to social media, mobile phones and the lack of genuine, eye-to-eye connection. This digital disengagement is generating a global identity crisis, depression and anxiety. Thankfully, a friend’s gift of The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino has provided me with strength and hope for navigating challenging times. An alcoholic who deeply contemplated suicide, Mandino received a divine vision to write the book that would inspire countless people with affirmations called “Sacred Scrolls.” I condensed and memorized 10 pages of these teachings and said them aloud every day for 11 years. I also created my own affirmation: “Regardless of what happens in life, I shall affirm with all my heart: ‘This is a magnificent blessing.’” CONTINUED >

CASTLE ON A HILL Among my many blessings was the good fortune to briefly live in the iconic Malibu Castle. Built by Dr. Thomas Hodges (the same doctor who saved my life after I drank ant poison when I was 6 years old), the castle was now owned by Lilly Lawrence, the daughter of a former oil minister from Iran (she told me her godfather was Aristotle Onassis). The castle’s “Presidents’ Room” contained framed business cards of J. Paul Getty and Nelson Rockefeller and a personal letter to Lilly from Jackie Kennedy. During my time at the castle, I worked at the Malibu Performing Arts Center, now the Malibu City Hall building. A euphonically designed recording studio quality concert hall, MPAC hosted live concerts that were recorded and webcast. When Tom Petty performed there, I gave him a “Malibu Marshal” badge to add to his collection. When Paris Hilton was at Planet Blue, I asked her if she would do a concert at MPAC. Surrounded by a huge group of paparazzi as we walked to her Bentley, I gave her my card. She said she would love to and asked me to call her manager. When I informed one of the MPAC owners that she was interested in performing there, he whimsically said, “No one cares about Paris Hilton.” Ironically, shortly after that, she was the focal point of the entire world when she was put in the back of a police car and sentenced to a 45-day jail term. Needless to say, she never appeared in concert at MPAC.

16

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | A RTS + CULTURE

Another standout castle memory is when Lilly, the castle owner, wrote a letter accusing Pierce Brosnan of trying to get headlines by fighting against the oil companies that wanted to place an 8-story LNG gas tanker offshore of Malibu. Ironically, then-governor Arnold “The Terminator” Schwarzenegger, was pushing for the ship to anchor, while “James Bond 007” was speaking against it. Sadly, the castle later burned down in a raging fire, which also threatened MPAC. As I stood inside the MPAC front entry lobby behind big glass doors watching small burning cinders blow under the doors onto the carpet, I witnessed how the building could have burned down very easily if I weren’t there. In June 2021, I presented Pierce with a photo I took of his home with a robust rainbow above it. I told him then, which applies to all of you now, “I want to acknowledge your amazing strength in living life through unspeakable loss and pain, while continuing with your outstanding career and amazing life. May you be filled with grace and deep peace.” Look for more Mr. Malibu stories in the next issue of Malibu Coast Lifestyle Magazine. Dr. Asif Taqi is a triple board-certified interventional and stroke neurologist with a background in neuroendovascular surgery, vascular neurology and neurocritical care. His experience treating conditions involving cerebral vasculature, neuromuscular and nerve systems is unparalleled and continues to evolve with each passing day. Here, Dr. Taqi, founder and CEO of Vascular Neurology of Southern California, covers the basics of how botulinum toxin injections may help patients manage persistent pain and live more comfortably. Let’s begin by defining botulinum toxin. Everyone has heard of it—likely by its mainstream moniker, “Botox”—and its ability to temporarily reduce or eliminate facial fine lines and wrinkles. But that’s not all it does! In fact, botulinum toxin can be found as a treatment option in nearly all medical specialties and has been around for decades helping patients with a diverse set of conditions. Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxic protein produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. It works by preventing the nerve signals to the muscle in which it is injected, thereby weakening or paralyzing the site. Health care professionals use a specific serotype of the bacteria, botulinum toxin type A, for medical treatment. The common types of botulinum toxin available commercially include BOTOX®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau®.

At Vascular Neurology of Southern California BOTOX® injections are offered for the treatment of several conditions: • Myofascial Pain Syndrome • Neck Pain • Temporomandibular Joint Disorder • Bruxism • Chronic Headache & Migraine BOTOX® injections, in treatment of the above conditions, temporarily relieve muscle tension, pain and spasms by blocking signals between the nerves and muscles. For sustained relief, repeat injections will be required. Prior to making any decisions regarding management of a condition, a consultation with an expert is advised to explore options and to better understand the potential risks and benefits of BOTOX® injections.

MYOFASCIAL PAIN SYNDROME Myofascial Pain Syndrome is a common and chronic pain disorder that affects muscles and fascia. This condition is specifically categorized by the presence of trigger points that cause referred pain. MPS may occur in areas such as the lower and upper back, the neck, shoulders, and chest. While most individuals experience some form of muscle tension throughout their lives, what separates MPS is its persistence and progressively debilitating nature. Myofascial pain syndrome does not resolve on its own and requires treatment for any meaningful relief.

NECK PAIN Neck pain is a prevalent medical condition among adults that can affect individuals of all ages. Neck pain can impact any of the bones, tissues or muscles responsible for range of motion. This condition can be chronic or acute and can limit or interfere with daily life. While most individuals may experience occasional stiffness or soreness in the neck, prolonged and worsening pain can indicate injury or illness and may require medical intervention. Unfortunately, there is not a single action plan that suits all patients suffering from myofascial pain syndrome or neck pain. Each individual will likely have their own unique set of circumstances that impact their experience. At VNSC, trigger point injections are offered as a treatment for MPS and neck pain. Injections of BOTOX®, steroids, anesthetic or saline solution to the affected sites may be an option if other standard medical treatments have failed. Common sites of injections include neck, shoulders, back, arms, elbows, lower back, legs, calves and others.

TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT DISORDER Located on either side of the skull, the temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw (mandible) to the temporal bone. Its primary function is to act as a hinge allowing the jaw to move to talk, chew and yawn. TMJ disorders may cause pain in the jaw joints and the surrounding muscles. The pain associated with TMJ disorders may travel through the face, jaw and neck, resulting in stiffness, limited range of movement and, in some cases, inflammation.

BRUXISM Teeth grinding is a relatively common behavior among adults and children. Occasional teeth grinding does not pose a health threat, however, when grinding or clenching occurs on a regular basis, this is a medical condition called bruxism. Bruxism can cause teeth to loosen, fracture or fall out. Patients only become aware of their bruxism when their condition demonstrates severe side effects or complications. In some patients, TMJ pain and bruxism resolve without medical intervention. However, should symptoms persist, worsen or interfere with daily activities, a physician will likely need to be involved. Depending on the cause and severity of the condition, physicians may offer medications, therapy, dental surgery or trigger point injections to the jaw of BOTOX® or possibly steroids.

CHRONIC HEADACHE & MIGRAINE Headaches are an exceptionally prevalent condition that impacts many individuals of all ages around the world. Headaches create unpleasant pain in and around the head, face and upper neck areas, ranging from a temporary nuisance to disabling pain for weeks at a time. Headaches are diverse and may vary in location, frequency, intensity and cause. Likely, if symptoms persist and interfere with daily life, an expert physician will need to be involved. Migraines are a type of headache that often develop on one side of the head and occur in stages. They often recur and may last anywhere from a few hours to days. Some patients incur warning symptoms prior to migraine onset. Because there is a wide and diverse spectrum of the migraine experience, it is difficult to pinpoint a universal treatment plan. Treatment options for management of headache and migraine are diverse and include nonpharmacological (i.e., meditation, stress management, acupuncture, etc.) methods, pharmacotherapy (i.e., abortive therapy or prophylactic therapy), or neuromodulation (devices meant to increase or decrease the activity or the nervous system). Novus Anti-Aging Center: Healing Is an Inside Job

As the CEO and Owner of the Novus Anti-Aging Center, Stephanie Wolff believes in healing the body from within and wants people to take control of their own health—becoming “proactive” rather than “reactive.” “Medicine is good and serves a purpose when needed, but we have what is called sick care, not health care in the United States,” explains Wolff, who has been practicing medicine for nearly two decades. “People only go to the doctor when they are sick, never when they are preventing sickness—I hope to change this viewpoint,” she continues. “There is a saying I use in my practice—‘clean your side of the street’—and what I mean by that is do your part to maintain your health through proper hormone and peptide optimization, diet and exercise. You do just these small things and your body will continue to work like a racecar.” One of the most popular offerings at the Novus AntiAging Center is their Hormone Optimization Program and Regenerative Medicine Treatments, which include Peptides, Platelet Rich Plasma and Stem Cell Exosomes. “Most patients come into the clinic feeling stressed, depressed, lethargic and unclear as to why this is happening,” Wolff says. “They have done all of the things they know, such as diet and exercise; they’ve even had a visit with their primary care physicians but still cannot get to the root of their issues.” Wolff dives into their medical background and orders an extensive lab panel of which she educates patients on each individual test separately and explains why it’s important and why it fails, as well as how to fix it with either hormones, peptides or diet. “I create a personalized Hormone Custom Plan based on the labs, medical history and goals of each individual patient,” she explains, adding that most patients leave her clinic never having experienced such a visit. “They are fully educated and empowered to take control of healing their bodies from within rather than using ‘Band-aid fixes’ given to them by their primary care physicians,” she says. Above all, patients at the Novus Anti-Aging Center discover a new look at life through hormone optimization, peptide therapy and stem cell exosomes, and a personalized, hands-on experience. “There is not a one-size-fits-all in my mind,” Wolff emphasizes. “Everyone is unique and different and requires a customized plan based on their specific goals.” Wolff, whose background is in Family Practice, graduated in 2003 from Midwestern University with her Physician Assistant Certification, and it was during this time that she realized most of her patients were taking 10 or more medications and were still not feeling well.

“Their diabetes wasn’t controlled, their blood pressure wasn’t controlled, they weren’t sleeping, they had no energy and no sex drive—literally no will to live,” she remembers. “I knew the system was failing these people, so I decided to do something different.” Wolff began her journey into hormone optimization and regenerative medicine training with the American Academy of Anti-Aging (A4M) and started to work with these patients on getting them off of their medications and healing them from the inside out. “After a year of changing my methods, I had a waiting list of three months and none of the other physicians in my practice believed in what I was offering,” she recalls. It wasn’t until she went on vacation and left her patients behind when the practice realized the type of patients she was seeing and how “needy” they were. “When I returned to the practice, my primary physician pulled me aside and said, ‘We are not in the business of fixing people; if you fix them, they don’t come back and we don’t get paid’.” In that moment, “I decided I needed to leave this health care system and start my own practice, actually fixing people and being allowed to do so,” says Wolff. “I always wanted to help people as it is something that gives me joy and happiness as well as purpose.” It was then that Novus was birthed. “I knew that those patients would come to find me, those that wanted to be fixed rather than heavily medicated.” To this day, Wolff continuously researches and learns about the latest and greatest medical findings—not only for herself and her family, but for her patients as well. “I want to walk them through the process of healing their bodies from the inside out; I want them to live again,” she says. “This is what separates Novus from any other practice. We strive to make each and every patient feel like our family and want to help them achieve their health care goals.” Wolff is proud that the year 2022 marks the fifth anniversary of the Novus Anti-Aging Center. To celebrate this milestone, “We are offering a ‘Purchase a Stem Cell Exosome Treatment and get a second one free’ for the entire month of January. I believe in this therapy immensely and want others to experience the results that have literally transformed the lives of my patients in more ways than one.” The Novus Anti-Aging Center is located at 11650 Riverside Drive, Suite 11, in Studio City. At Wolf Creek Wellness, clients enjoy wandering around the property that’s home to miniature horses, peacocks, goats and other animals that are sometimes used as part of the therapeutic process. “One of the best parts about Wolf Creek is the variety of services we offer,” says Founder Lori Donnelly, who uses a variety of intuitive and proven methods, combining techniques such as hypnotherapy, NeuroLinguistic Programming, Integral Eye Movement Therapy, Emotional Freedom Technique and more. “Everyone can benefit in some way, whether you suffer from trauma or PTSD, or you have life circumstances that you would like to improve, such as having amazing success in your business ventures or relationship success,” Donnelly says. “Wolf Creek even offers spiritual well-being and awareness.” The clinicians also make Wolf Creek Wellness unique for what they bring to the table, including Integral Eye Movement Therapy, a method that utilizes simple eye movements and questioning techniques to change a particular thought pattern; Neuro-Linguistic Programming, a way of changing someone's thoughts and behaviors to help achieve desired outcomes; and Reiki, a form of complementary therapy relating to energy healing. “Wolf Creek Wellness stands apart from other wellness centers because of the variety of services that are offered,” says Angela Fritz, a Certified Hypnotherapist at Wolf Creek Wellness, adding that each service is catered to the client’s needs. “Whether you book a Zoom session or come in person, you are bound to receive results that are life changing.” Reiki, for instance, is beneficial in ways that are unique to everyone. “We are all beings of energy and when we can recognize our own energy and get in touch with it we begin to see life with a new set of eyes, ears, words, thoughts and so much more,” Fritz explains. “Many describe Reiki as a massage or floating on a cloud and being taken to somewhere they have never experienced before.” Additionally, Wolf Creek Wellness offers Sound Baths “that allow for you to go within.” “With the breathtaking landscape and natural elements that surround Wolf Creek Wellness, magic happens when the sounds and frequencies move through the body, allowing you to take control of going within and digging deep into your own subconscious mind,” Fritz says. Self-help classes are also offered, as well as yoga, self-hypnosis classes, past-life regression classes, and more. Located at Wolf Creek Valley Ranch in the Santa Rosa Valley, “Wolf Creek Wellness has always been a healing location,” Fritz notes. “Lori would use her courtyard porch to assist others while they would visit the ranch and tend to their beloved creatures at the ranch,” recalls Fritz, further emphasizing that “Lori has found her calling by helping others help themselves.” Additionally, “Lori has several associates on her team that add value to Wolf Creek Wellness,” Fritz says. “For this reason and many others, Wolf Creek Wellness is a place of being yourself and learning tools that will forever change your mindset in the most positive way.” It’s important to understand that your subconscious mind is “like a hard drive,” and it will do anything to protect you from crashing, Fritz emphasizes. “However, just like a hard drive, it doesn’t understand how to differentiate the coding that is being put into the mind and therefore the patterns that continue to show up can be the exact reason why hypnosis is for you.” Ultimately, the goal of Wolf Creek Wellness “is to help everyone unlock their inner gifts,” Fritz says, “allowing everyone to remember who they are and set themselves free from the coding and hardware that your subconscious mind is currently using to operate with...allowing everyone to have a fresh start, a reboot, a new mindset that allows for new beginnings in all aspects of our journey here on this beautiful planet.”

For the month of January, Wolf Creek Wellness will offer Sound Bath workshops, and practitioners have limited pro bono openings for clients who qualify. Angela Fritz will offer a past-life regression for $250—normally $475—in addition to teaching self-hypnosis classes. Wolf Creek Wellness is located at 11600 Santa Rosa Road in the Santa Rosa Valley. I nt ro duc i n g t he A l l -New 202 2

Mercedes AMG Roadster Even though much of the world's auto industry is rushing to make electrics, some are still making sure there's a memorable grand touring car, and that's Mercedes introducing an all new two-door SL. The first SLs go back to 1952 when they had super lightweight sports cars that gave the model its name: SL. The 2022 AMG Roadster boasts an all-new chassis under the car too. Meticulously developed by Mercedes-AMG, it consists of an aluminum space frame. The goal was high comfort, precise driving dynamics, optimal packaging and sporty body proportions.

Two things separate it from other SLs: (1) It is a 2+2 for the first time since 1989; and (2) It features a retro simple cloth convertible top rather than a complicated metal folding top common in recent years. Customers can choose from single or two-tone Nappa leather, elegant Nappa style leather with diamond stitching, or the sporty combination of Nappa leather and Dinamica Race microfiber with yellow or red topstitching. Inside, the 11.9-inch multimedia touchscreen dominates the lower section of the instrument panel. It's designed to be electrically adjustable to reduce glare when driving with the top down. Plus, it has four-wheel steering and all-wheel drive as standard, both firsts for the SL. AMG is the tuning company within Mercedes that makes the high-performance model, which also means it's quick! Oh, and if you must know, the top can retract in 15 seconds flat while driving! The base price will be roughly $115,000 with top-of-the-line models close to $160,000. Is it fast? Jawohl! The slower SL55 cranks out 469 hp and does 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, while the more powerful version of the same engine in the SL63 is good for 577 hp and a 0 to 60 time under 3.5 seconds. Both versions are automatics, using a 9-speed multi-clutch transmission. Arriving at dealers early this year! Wallace Wyss is a fine artist specializing in automotive art.
