LIFESTYLE LETTER
'Tis the Season
December 2022 PUBLISHER S
Ben Malkin | Ben.Malkin@citylifestyle.com Robin Chesler | Robin.Chesler@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
As we wrap up the year, reflecting on the events, lessons and highlights of 2022 is apropos. The biggest takeaway for me personally from this year is the importance of living and loving life to the fullest. As our monthly columnist Cary ONeal, aka “Mr. Malibu,” encourages us to “welcome more love and appreciation” in our lives “valuing, respecting, cherishing, treasuring and admiring” those people, experiences and places we hold dear, that familiar saying, “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone” comes to mind. Having lost several loved ones this year, I find this sentiment especially poignant. So, I’ve resolved to tell my family and friends how much they mean to me, make sure to spend quality time with them and hug them fully and tightly with both arms whenever we part. The holidays also present the perfect time to gather with those we cherish and to celebrate the return of favorite traditions that we’ve had to forgo in recent years, like the annual performance of “The Nutcracker” by Pacific Festival Ballet, which returns to the stage this month! Grab the family and get into the holiday spirit by attending holiday concerts at Oaks Christian and Pepperdine’s Lisa Smith Wengler Center for the Arts. Consider gifting your family a brand-new luxury appliance from WDC Kitchen & Bath and soaking up the magic of the season at Aldik Home’s winter wonderland where you’ll be creatively inspired as you gaze in awe at their myriad beautifully decorated Christmas trees. If a change of scenery calls, consider escaping to Palm Springs. Just a few hours’ drive away, this desert oasis offers exciting adventures and luxurious boutique hotels, restaurants, museums and more to explore with extended family or your special someone. Read all about the area’s intrigue in this issue. Whatever way you choose to celebrate, be sure to make the most of it with those you love. ‘Tis the season to live, love and be merry! Wishing you and your loved ones a warm, heartfelt and happy holiday season!

Pacific Festival Ballet: Twirling Across Town Once Again!

Tree-lighting ceremonies, holiday fairs and pop-up ice-skating rinks are all cherished memories in our community. We build each holiday season around family favorites and to have them disappear over the past few pandemic years has been disheartening for us all. Pacific Festival Ballet, as a dance community, has felt that loss as well. Not only were live theatre performances shut down for 20 months, but so were the numerous community outreach events that PFB engaged in every year. These festivals, street fairs and visits to retirement villages or fire stations allowed performers to step off the Civic Arts Plaza stage and pirouette into the hearts and streets of the Conejo Valley. Another missed moment are the children’s outreach performances that Pacific Festival Ballet produces twice a year. In partnership with Community Educational Entertainment, close to 5,000 children annually attend field trip performances to “The Nutcracker” and various spring ballets. “I love the response from an audience full of children,” says Artistic Director Kim Maselli. “They are so genuine and authentic with their reactions. Often our original ballets premiere to a children’s audience first. I know right away if the humor works, what they love and what they don’t!” Ballet Today, the outreach program of Pacific Festival Ballet, raises funds each year to provide a theatre experience for children or families in the community who may not have the means to purchase tickets for a ballet. “We do not want to limit our audience only to those who can afford a theatre ticket,” comments Michael Maselli, Executive Director. “We want to share the performing arts experience, and especially the ballet, with everyone.”
Meeting performers in costume has proven to be a magical moment, almost like meeting Disney characters face to face. Some children hide behind a parent while others rush up to the dancer for a big hug. Stepping out of the stage lights and into everyday settings brings the beauty of ballet into the crowds. People young and old are mesmerized seeing this art form up close and personal. “I felt like a real-life Cinderella when, after my performance of ‘Cinderella,’ I was greeted by a group of little girls all dressed up like me!” says Alexa Kernan, PFB ballerina. Organizations PFB has partnered with include Casa Pacifica, Support for the Kids, Boys & Girls Club, Safe Passages, Gabriel’s House, University Village, and Motion Picture and Television Retirement Community. This year as the pandemic tide slowly ebbed, we all breathed a sigh of relief. With the return to school, work, theatres and entertainment, life began to take on a normal flow. The final missing piece for Pacific Festival Ballet was the restart of Ballet Today. Community outreach and children’s field trips were the last to restore and that component of the company was greatly missed. With “The Nutcracker” 2022 season in pre-production, PFB re-engaged its outreach to see if student field trips were a consideration for the new school year. The immediate response was overwhelming and within six weeks “The Nutcracker” children’s outreach performance was sold out! “I was so thrilled to hear the appreciation and eagerness from so many teachers,” says Ramona Brandes, Director of Community Educational Entertainment. “To have 1,800 children back in the Kavli Theatre will be a treat for all of us! We had to quickly get the spring ballet of ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ on the calendar to accommodate the overflow!”

“To have 1,800 children back in the Kavli Theatre will be a treat for all of us! We had to quickly get the spring ballet of ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ on the calendar to accommodate the overflow!” Encouraged by the field trip response, additional effort was put into traditional community events for the upcoming holidays. The first invitation was returning to perform segments of “The Nutcracker” at University Village. The next is a live preview performance at The Oaks Mall on December 11 at 2 p.m. and the third, a performing opportunity at the Westlake Rotary Club’s Holiday’s in the Village: A European Marketplace December 4 at 2 p.m. “Being able to engage with the community again feels like the missing piece of our puzzle,” says Maselli. “We

love our live theatre seasons as one of the resident companies at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center, but a part of our purpose is to step off of the stage and into our community. We are happy to be back!” Join us this season for “The Nutcracker” on Saturday, December 17 and Sunday, December 18 at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at the BAPAC Box Office or Ticketmaster. H OM E U P DAT E | HOM E + DE S I GN
After 40 years, WDC Kitchen & Bath knows the ins and outs of managing a successful business. These past few years have been exceptionally difficult due to global events that are out of anyone’s control, creating challenges in all aspects of life, including manufacturing and retail. What can be controlled is how to respond to the challenges. The business strategists at WDC responded earlier than any other competitor with a very simple solution—BUY, BUY, BUY! WDC stocked up to $20 million of products in less than a year. This forethought provided local communities a steady source of in-stock, essential products at reasonable prices and with exceptional customer service. As an added bonus, WDC now has the largest selection of luxury in-stock appliances by top brands, such as SubZero, Wolf and Cove in California! SubZero, Wolf and Cove luxury appliances have always been in high demand, but now customers are asked to wait over eight months to a year to receive their appliances— not with WDC! The WDC warehouse is well stocked with most SubZero, Wolf and Cove models. In fact, truckloads of products are delivered on a weekly basis. Customers can not only find the products they need, but they also can have them delivered locally the next day! WDC’s core philosophy is to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of the appliance industry and to provide the best available products and services to the local communities. This core philosophy has driven WDC’s current success and consequent expansion into new locations. A new WDC Showroom in Lomita has recently opened its doors. Taking up the entire second floor of the newly renovated Atrium Design Center, the new WDC Showroom features several stateof-the-art kitchenettes by top-name brands such as Viking, Miele, Thermador, Fisher & Paykel, Monogram, SubZero, Wolf and Cove and many others. Not to mention the numerous designer plumbing fixtures from luxury brands such as Gessi, Lixil, DXV, Devon & Devon and many more. As the centerpiece of
this modern designer mall, the WDC Lomita Showroom will cater to local designers, architects and builders. Do not fret, as the showroom is open to anyone interested in renovating their kitchen or bath. Another new showroom opening early 2023 will open its doors in the desert oasis of La Quinta in the Palm Desert area. The WDC Showroom in La Quinta will be a sprawling 45,000 square feet housing over 14 interactive kitchenettes, an impressive plumbing department with over six bathroom vignettes and working faucet displays, a large mattress area and a BBQ Outdoor Kitchen area to display brands such as Big Green Egg, Coyote and Kalamazoo Gourmet Grills. If you need to renovate your Palm Springs vacation home, this would be the time to do it. As WDC continues to grow, one thing remains the same at each location: the WDC Experience. At each location homeowners and professionals alike can interact with all the latest product innovations and find inspiration while walking through lovely kitchenettes and bathroom vignettes. WDC sales professionals with years of valuable experience will turn that inspiration into tangible plans and products to match. Customers can shop by style (modern, contemporary, traditional, etc.) or by a specific manufacturer, each having a unique and inspirational design of its own. WDC offers a variety of design motifs, finishes, sizes, features and price points to satisfy even the most particular of customers. With over $20 million in stock, the chances of fulfilling your dream kitchen or bathroom within a reasonable timeframe is vastly improved. If that isn’t enough, WDC also provides a comfortable and private conference area for interior designers and their clients to meet, as well as a full coffee bar that makes a variety of coffee favorites, such as macchiato and cappuccino drinks. Visit any of the currently open showrooms to get started, and if you plan to head over to Palm Springs in the winter, be sure to check out the new WDC La Quinta Showroom! THE MALIBU I LOVE ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARY ONEAL With the culmination of 2022 upon us, we all welcome more love and appreciation, words which mean the same thing: “to become more.” Appreciation can be valuing, respecting, cherishing, treasuring and admiring—a unique experience for each of us. A friend told me she made holiday cards for everyone who had meaning in her life. She shared at least three things she loved about that person, and it became a gratitude festival. Especially after these past few years of contemplating deeper what is important, I have been discovering how powerful it is to value the differences in people. In the process I came up with this quote: “I rejoice in my/their choices,” inspired by the sense that we are all here to use our free will to make our choices and discover our true nature. I’d like to share some of the things I treasure about Malibu: the ocean, the wildlife, the sunsets and the sacred history of fascinating people. Did you know that Malibu in Chumash means “where the waves crash loudly”? Walking down Westward Beach near The Sunset restaurant, I heard a very loud bang, almost as if a cannon fired. It was a big shore-breaker wave, just as the Chumash heard over 14,000 years ago. Did you know that Zuma means “Abundance”? When I see Zuma Beach at low tide, the vast expansive stretch filled with all the wildlife and sea life, it is indeed overflowing abundance. I love all the people who share our love for an ocean swim, beach saunter or an exhilarating view of sparkling waves and gorgeous sunsets. I cherish watching mother nature transforming the ocean, clouds, sky and sunlight into a living canvas to communicate radically diverse masterpieces of boundless beauty, whether stormy, windy, moody or bright crystal clear and sunny. These living images, timeless and beyond comprehension, have been indelibly etched into my soul and are powerful wake-up reminders when I’m feeling blue that there is a loving Source beyond what my eyes can see. I’m reminded of the special feeling of how much this means to me to be able to see, hear and touch this seascape magnificence and feel the profound gift of gratitude as I shout, “Thank You!” across the universe and back. I also love the cultural impact Malibu has had on my life. With regard to the snapshot of Malibu history I have witnessed since a child, I loved how growing up in the Malibu Colony organically brought interactions with people from all over the world, including a large number of world-famous icons. These experiences led me to feel as though anything is possible and meeting anyone on Earth is possible. Conversations in my childhood were frequently about whether these superstars/influencers were of good character, that being perceived as the predominant element of “social currency.” I love how this feedback from friends

and family brought about a feeling in me that it is most valuable to look at others as equals, no matter what they have or don’t have. I’m grateful to have experienced Malibu at 8 years old, swimming in the Malibu Lagoon and hiking up the creek all the way to the Malibu tunnel, witnessing mother nature and creatures at their finest. We never locked our doors and neither did our neighbors. The Colony was a rural small town to me. Then there is the reverse view of Malibu— what viewers throughout the world have seen of Malibu in film, television and international news. I am told that in the silent movie era, because many Hollywood stars and executives lived in the Colony, for example, that Malibu was perceived as a mysterious, magical location and since then has become a global hot spot and magnet. Aside from all this exposure, Malibu will forever be my favorite place on Earth because of the ocean and sunsets that fill my heart to overflowing. Look for more Mr. Malibu stories in the next issue of Malibu Coast Lifestyle Magazine. Mr. Malibu’s high-profile events and celebrity interviews reach over 22 million on television, 500,000 via social media and nearly 4 million on YouTube. Just like when movie stars of the ‘20s and ‘50s flocked to the area from Hollywood, Palm Springs continues to be Los Angeles’ favorite getaway. This little big town in the desert, flanked by the dramatic San Jacinto mountains and poking palm trees, provides a playful swanky, sun-drenched landscape just a 2-hour drive from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. Soak up the mid-century modern design, evident in homes and retail spaces left behind from the days when innovative architects built affordable vacation homes and post-war optimism bred indoor-outdoor living, proud colors, glass and concrete, deep overhangs and dramatic angular roofs. Some people escape to Greater Palm Springs to luxuriate in a boutique hotel hideaway surrounded by a picturesque sun-drenched pool. Leisure is indeed one of the major reasons people flock to the Greater Palm Springs desert oasis. Exciting adventures and enriching opportunities abound and there are myriad ways to savor California’s Coachella Valley. Under the desert sun, moon and stars, remind yourself how good life can be. Learn why we keep going back and how you too can explore the Greater Palm Springs area. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, PALM SPRINGS!
5 DINING OPTIONS NOT TO MISS
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MELISSA CURTIN
For the love of dogs, Boozehounds is not just a place to socialize with your dog but an expansive restaurant, lounge, cabana bar and patio that caters to pups with Fido’s own dog menu. Inside the open-air mid-century building stuffed with Tulum-esque foliage and hip doggy decor, enjoy sunset Happy Hour cocktails or a burger with parmesan truffle fries at the main bar facing the San Jacinto Mountain range. Brunch is popular and we also recommend the crudo menu. One of the hottest new restaurants to arrive in the desert is Bar Cecil offering seasonal bistro French/California fare and a $50 caviar martini. Created to house the owner’s extravagant art collection, dine next to a Calder or Damien Hirst or read the art book to grasp the beauty around you. Led by Chef Gabriel Woo, house specialties include the ratatouille or steak frites and their famed pavlova with berries. Book a month in advance or show up around 4:45 p.m. to score a seat. You can’t come to the desert without trying an old-school celeb haunt that has survived since the Rat Pack days. Located within the historic Ingleside Inn, Melvyn’s was the go-to spot for Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor and other Hollywood royalty back in the 50s. Order a Dirty Martini at the bar while glossing over the black and white photos of the who’s who of yesteryear. Request a song from the piano player and soak up the ambiance over a classic dinner of chicken pot pie, lobster risotto or steak Diane served tableside. For casual take-out food, there is no better option for lunch than Gabino’s Creperie where savory chicken-stuffed crispy crepes are prepared with zesty seasoning on the outside with choices like chicken pesto, ranch and barbecue. “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives” (Season 42, Episode 26) with Guy Fieri recently featured this window-serve alley nook with a few outdoor tables. One of our favorite places for brunch is the flower-laden outdoor restaurant The Farm with a Provencal-style menu serving traditional French dishes like sweet and savory crepes, specialty omelets, salads, sandwiches and brioche French toast. freshly squeezed juice (watermelon, orange or grapefruit) and order Poulet a La Creme, a crepe loaded with chicken, mushrooms, herbs, creme fraiche and white wine. Also, the three-course prix fixe dinners with live music are a real value.
4 MEMORABLE DESERT EXPERIENCES In 10 minutes, zoom one and a half miles up to a pristine wilderness in the largest rotating aerial tram. As you elevate to 8,516 feet on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, you ascend past forest and steep mountain cliffs with sweeping views of Palm Springs and snow may greet you during certain times of the year. Extend your time by grabbing a bite at the newly renovated restaurant atop Mt. San Jacinto State Park or immerse yourself in nature on the 50 miles of hiking trails, but not before gawking at the views from the observation decks and the brand new $13-million Mountain Station design remodel that took three years and reflects the original architectural concept. Make sure to book tickets in advance. The former Annenberg estate, Sunnylands, in Rancho Mirage (just a short drive from Palm Springs) has welcomed presidents and royalty since the 1960s, thanks to publisher billionaire magnate Walter Annenberg, who created TV Guide, Seventeen Magazine, and one of the first TV stations out of Philadelphia. Most notable is the introductory 35-minute film showcasing the numerous presidents and celebs who brought the estate to life. Walk the wildflower field or Great Lawn gardens and marvel at the history of this former meeting place where often over golf or dinner major ideas were exchanged, and international relations and laws were sorted out and discussed. Admire more than 70 species of arid-adapted plants amongst twin reflecting pools filled with river stones and contemplate life on the Obama bench or while winding through a labyrinth. Yoga, bird walks and private tours of the home can be found online. Palm Springs Art Museum is an intimate treasure trove of innovative and forward-thinking art but also contains an outdoor sculpture garden, local bistro, lecture hall, theater and a 1,000-square-foot store. Reserve tickets online for free Thursday evenings. Don’t miss the surrounding area filled with whimsical art, such as a car suspended over a reflecting pool, the Marilyn Monroe statue and The Babies crawling in the courtyard from Czech Republic artist David Cerny. The Architecture and Design Center can be found down the road. For those who enjoy witnessing art installations in the desert environment of Coachella Valley, Desert X returns in 2023 from March through May. The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens located in Palm Desert is a desert botanical garden with over 500 animals that specializes in deserts of the world with a mission of desert conservation through preservation, education and appreciation. The Living Desert recently became a Certified Autism Center (CAC). The impressive landscape with thousands of acres affords animals wide open spaces. Feed giraffes and admire bighorn sheep, African wild dogs, black rhinos and other fascinating species. In the Australian habitat area, wallabies bounce alongside you in an open area. Arrive early in the day mid-week when it’s cooler and there are less crowds. During the holidays, WildLights transforms the setting into a winter wonderland.
3 BOUTIQUE HOTEL STAYS THAT FEEL LIKE YOUR OWN VILLA Transformed into a design lover’s Zen oasis, the newly opened 1959 apartment building has been reborn as Azure Sky Hotel, an exclusive 14-room sanctuary set in the tranquil Deepwell Estates neighborhood. The design team behind this Palm Springs newcomer has made

mid-century modern with a calm aesthetic in this secluded property just minutes from all the action of downtown. Stone tile flooring, walk-in mosaic tile showers and uber-comfy mattresses set in floating platform beds add to the appeal. Clean lines with pops of chic black are peppered throughout the art, furniture and architecture. Almost all rooms come with impressive kitchenettes and private patios with hammocks. But the stunner is the oversized lounge poolscape with bar, jacuzzi and generous unobstructed views of the San Jacinto Mountains. Just down the road, step into Villa Royale, an intimate hideaway where Spanish revival style meets mid-century modern design. A vintage car parked outside lets guests know they have arrived. The 38-room villa built in 1947 is spread across a lengthy property with three pools. Bold portrait art and colorful wall murals mesh with Spanish tiles and romantic courtyard fountains. The retro-modern cool ambiance is alluring accentuated with dramatic sunsets, majestic hugging mountains with swaying palm trees, warm winds and expertly crafted cocktails delivered poolside. Some days you may have the pool all to yourself while you devour dishes under the stars at the hotel’s Del Rey Restaurant, and thus it feels like, well, your own villa. Sexy romantic little Korakia Pensione is another hotel charmer that feels Old World Moroccan. Some of the Mediterranean-style bungalows come with retro kitchenettes, walk-out patios, artist studio lofts and in-room record players, while fire pits and outdoor movie nights are just some of the perks at this hotel dubbed one of the sexiest hotels in America.
2 UNBELIEVABLE HIKES While Greater Palm Springs is a mecca for golf and tennis, hiking in the desert terrain is an otherworldly option you won’t want to miss. Start with the 1.7-mile Tahquitz Canyon Loop Trail on the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation in Palm Springs. Scramble around smooth boulders, ancient irrigation systems and native plants while towering rock faces hug the trail and the valley floor sprawls in the distance. Come at the right time of year and find yourself staring at a surreal 60-foot waterfall. Indian Canyons, another nature preserve, offers numerous trails for hiking and horseback riding once you enter this sacred land. Start with the more aggressive 3-mile Victor Trail that scales up and around varying terrain, such as the impressive grove of stately skirted palms, red barrel cacti and over 150 species of plants. An easier 1-mile loop on a flat trail at Andreas Canyon follows a stream by groves of California fan palms and feels more “jungle” than desert. A small waterfall toward the end of the loop is a welcome cool-off respite during warmer months.
1 MODERNISM WEEK Modernism Week (which debuts as a preview in October and features 11 days of celebration in February) has attracted design lovers, mid-century modern fans and architectural buffs from all over the world annually since 2006. Book an iconic home tour, a neighborhood walking tour, a double-decker architectural bus tour, a cocktail party event, classic car show and more. Score vintage finds at the Modernism Yard Sale or book an intimate tour with Palm Springs Mod Squad. The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

BMW’s 2023 XM SUV: Surprises in Styling, Powertrain & Price I am sure that when BMW first started making SUVs they wondered, “Will this ruin BMW’s sporty image?” Well, they are well beyond that now, having sold hundreds of thousands of SUVs. And BMW’s all-new SUV for 2023 sets records for performance, price and its controversial styling. The new XM SUV is not a full electric, but a hybrid electric (called a PHEV) that is a plug-in. The incredulous thing about it is the price: $159,995 before options! Another incredible aspect is the speed on tap—as fast as the famous Cobra of the ‘60s—0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds with a top speed of 175 mph! Perhaps the most mind-blowing detail about this model is its styling. If the Land Rover is restrained minimalist in design, the XM is bold and chunky. The headlights are slim and so are the taillights, while the big kidney grille is huge and right up there commanding the front view. Adding to the drama of the big mouth grille is its framed light rings at night. The XM is the first hybrid model from BMW to wear the M Badge, the M being their performance division, normally reserved for cars like the M3 and M5.
While the electric motor helps its speed, don’t count on going too far on electric power alone—the XM goes 30 miles and that’s only if you start with a full battery. The ICE engine is a turbocharged V8, which, along with the electric motor, produces 644 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, moving it from 0 to 60 mph in a scant 4.1 seconds—this in a 6,000-lb. SUV! And if that’s not fast enough, there is another one coming, same body but more horsepower and a $185,000 price tag, called the Label Red model (an oblique reference toward Rolls’ Black Badge models). Who, pray tell, is BMW aiming at? Well, their XM is priced way above American SUVs and less than Ferrari’s Purosangue SUV at $400,000 and which is not a hybrid. BMW envisions their XM taking away sales from other high-end SUVs, such as the Audi RS Q8, Mercedes-AMG GLE63, Aston Martin DBX and Lamborghini Urus. The fact that BMW can offer an M in an SUV is astounding enough. We’ll have to see how that bold grille and overall blocky styling goes over—maybe it will influence all BMWs! Book your Free Consult. Call 805-222-7459 or visit KhannaInstitute.com/SMILE FDA approved SMILE Eye Laser Surgery SMILE is short for Small Incision Lenticular Extraction. SMILE Laser eye surgery is a game changer in laser vision correction. Dr. Khanna is experienced in the use of the only FDA approved laser for SMILE, Visumax. Dr. Khanna is experienced in the use of this laser to carve a sliver of tissue in 30 seconds within the cornea. Cornea trained surgeon Dr.Khanna, skillfully and painlessly removes this thin tissue through a small opening. The recovery is quick with patients returning to work and sports in a day or two. The absence of the cornea flap causes less dry eye. Flapless also makes it safer, as there is less chance of the flap getting displaced. Therefore, even people who could not have Lasik, like surfers or those engaged in contact sports can SMILE.
SMILE vs Lasik Lasik has a flap which can get displaced or allow debris, cells or bugs to creep in. There is no flap in SMILE making it safer.
SMILE vs PRK The healing in PRK is slow and painful while that in SMILE is painless and fast.
