"May you live in interesting times" ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA, "MAY YOU LIVE IN INTERESTING TIMES" IS AN ENGLISH EXPRESSION THAT IS CLAIMED TO BE A TRANSLATION OF A TRADITIONAL CHINESE CURSE. While seemingly a blessing, the expression is normally used ironically; life is better in "uninteresting times" of peace and tranquility than in "interesting" ones, which are usually times of trouble. Even though there is no equivalent Chinese expression, the English seemed to prefer to not take

of 2020. Just when we thought it might be “safe to go into the water” (does anyone hear John Williams’ “Jaws” theme in the background?) in January, the pandemic and social and political upheaval continued. In spite of it all, Americans and our local communities have been resilient and remained healthier than most and far less alienated from each other even when opinions differed. For example, when I shop at Gelson’s or Pavilions, everyone wears a mask and no one to my knowledge has had a temper tantrum over the mandate. Robin and I are venturing forth and attending some local events, dining outside at local restaurants and shopping for things we need (I avoid Amazon as much as I can). We

“THE NUTCRACKER”
14
Malibu Coast Lifestyle | December 2021
WHEN THE LAST CURTAIN CALL ENDED AT THE CLOSE OF “THE NUTCRACKER” 2019, NO ONE, EITHER ONSTAGE OR IN THE AUDIENCE, COULD EVER HAVE PREDICTED WHAT AWAITED US ALL. As we know now, the result of the pandemic brought the performing arts world to a standstill. Like a domino effect, theaters one by one went dark all around the globe. With footlights unplugged, dressing rooms empty and the cavernous Kavli Theatre a silent shell, Pacific Festival Ballet retreated into its cocoon, holding on to the hope of emerging sooner than later. As weeks turned into months and months into two years, the daunting reality of the COVID shutdown took its toll on the resident ballet company at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center. “In hindsight I am glad we did not know how long this shutdown was going to last. At first, we thought the closure would be a month or so and we would ride it out,” says Artistic Director, Kim Maselli. “Once we realized the magnitude of this pandemic and the long-term effects it could have on our company, we shifted from survival mode to ‘let’s get proactive’ mode.” Pacific Festival Ballet was in the midst of rehearsing “The Secret Garden” for their 2020 Spring season when everything came to a halt. By early summer the discussion of transforming this original ballet from a stage production to film was in full bloom. Creative minds explored options and new production teams went into action. Using the Conejo Valley as the background, dancers and crew found beautiful local landscapes to act as the film’s canvas. Often a crowd would gather as music and dance became a spontaneous stage distracting people from their everyday activities. The dance film premiered months later, projected on the side of a Westlake Village building with a red carpet and all. “People were so excited to come out with their lawn chairs and set up in a dark parking lot,” comments Jonathan Sharp, one of the film’s leading performers. “It felt like a grand event!” On the heels of the film’s success came the devastating news that theatre closures were extended indefinitely, and our Nutcracker 2020 season was cancelled. After celebrating 25 years at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza the year before, it came as a huge blow to Pacific Festival Ballet and the community as they realized this cherished holiday tradition was not going to happen. From seasoned professionals to the youngest patron, the disappointment was tangible. Pre-professional ballet student Abbey Wyrrick says, “For years I have trained diligently with the hope of pursuing a ballet career. I also have had the role of Clara in ‘The Nutcracker’ as a personal goal. To realize this dream was postponed and possibly never achievable was hard for me.” Once again, PFB went into problem solving and decided to venture into another dance film, this time on a larger scale. Instead of taking “The Nutcracker” from stage to film, the PFB board decided to bravely step in a new direction. One of Pacific Festival Ballet’s trademarks is producing original ballets as well as preserving and presenting the classics. With the COVID shutdown sending so many alumni and professionals home to the Conejo Valley, Pacific Festival Ballet decided to build an original CONTINUED >

holiday ballet showcasing these beautiful artists and incorporating the current dancers in our community. This new film, “A Holiday Angel,” was an artistic effort created for the moment. The ballet is designed to celebrate the holidays, but it also holds a message of recognizing and uniting cultures from around the world. “During the holiday season more than ever, I think people are willing to set aside their differences and embrace all that humanity has in common,” Maselli says. Partnering with TOArts Roadshows, “A Holiday Angel” premiered at The Lakes behind the Civic Arts Plaza to a parking lot full of supporters. The success of “A Holiday Angel,” along with the spirit of the holiday season, was recognized by the applause of honking horns! As the calendar passed into 2021, Pacific Festival Ballet continued to expand its platform by filming archived performance pieces, again using the Conejo Valley as its background. Parks, greenbelts and gardens became opportunities for pop-up art. Film provided a wonderful way to keep dance alive, but everyone was yearning for the live performance experience. At long last summer 2021 ushered in an outdoor performing opportunity at the beautiful Los Robles Gardens. For the first time in almost two years, an audience gathered and under the evening stars, music, dance and stage lights filled the amphitheater. On the heels of this performance came the announcement that Broadway and theaters around the country were opening their doors. That long-awaited moment had finally arrived! Now on any given day at Pacific Festival Ballet, the score of “The Nutcracker” drifts from multiple rehearsal rooms. Dancers practice in the hallways as costumes are pulled out of storage and refurbished. The wheels are in motion for the company’s biggest comeback. “The start-up process was more challenging than anticipated,” says Production Manager Paige Loter. “We have produced ‘The Nutcracker’ for so many years, but suddenly, this season, we were needing to hire new trucking companies, stage managers, costume designers, printing companies. It makes us realize how many organizations suffered from the COVID shutdown. We feel grateful that PFB weathered the storm.” The return to the Civic Arts Plaza’s stage is met with great anticipation. Stepping into the theatre whether as cast, crew or audience member will not be taken lightly.

MALIBUILLABAISSE: THE RISE AND RISE OF BROAD STREET OYSTER STILL ON MAPS TO THIS DAY, THE AREA AROUND THE MALIBU PIER IS LABELED “KELLER’S SHELTER,” HONORING DON MATTEO KELLER, A 19TH CENTURY ADVENTURER AND ENTREPRENEUR WHO CAME TO CALIFORNIA BY WAY OF MEXICO. On Nov. 5, 1857, Keller bought the 13,300-acre Rancho Topanga Malibu y Sequit from Leon Victor Prudhomme for $1,400— the equivalent of $35,000 in modern dollars, but still a bargain. Don Mateo is remembered as one of the fathers of SoCal viticulture, and he also planted 250 million oyster seeds in Malibu Lagoon, which in 1876 was pristine/brackish and a perfect environment to harvest 4 million oysters a year. I know what you’re thinking: Holy shuck! Where did he sell 4 million oysters a year? It’s a mystery wrapped in an oyster shell. Don Matteo’s oyster beds were wiped out by a storm that flooded Malibu Lagoon half a century before Mrs. Rindge built her dam. BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY Fast forward almost 150 years to July 4, 2019: Christopher Tompkins is a displaced New Yorker who looks like a cross between King Neptune and the Cowardly Lion, but he is closer to ocean deity than sketchy feline. Gaining a reputation as “The Oyster Man” in Silverlake, Tompkins moved to a 2,650-square-foot permanent location in Malibu in 2019, opening Broad Street Oyster Company as a pop-up bar to see if the citizens and visitors would bite—or slurp. When Broad Street Oyster opened, Tompkins’ friend author Verizon John offered some local knowledge: “Places in Malibu either fall off a cliff or take off like a rocket. Atmosphere is important, quality is important, service is important and word of mouth is everything.” HIDDEN AWAY While Broad Street Oyster is tucked away down a narrow alley behind Malibu Village and the now not-so-pristine but still brackish Malibu Lagoon, thanks to social media, location, location, location and visibility don’t mean what they used to. Broad Street took off like SpaceX, finding that alchemy of funky and fashionable that struck all the right notes with Malibu citizens and outsiders. Decorated with nautical/Hollywood kitsch—TV sets in the bathrooms showing “Baywatch” reruns, surf posters, netting, buoys, 18

plastic lobsters, the finest in velvet art—Broad Street Oyster’s atmosphere pairs well with its “Malibuillabaisse” menu. Although oyster gets top billing, by far the most popular items are
the lobster rolls—big, healthy pieces of Atlantic lobster, served hot or cold in a butter-saturated brioche, with French fries or potato chips. Tompkins whispered to me how many lobster rolls they sell on the busiest days—a classified, but eye-popping amount! Are there any lobster left in Maine? Additional offerings include lobster hot and cold, oysters by the dozen (not from Malibu Lagoon—yeesh!) and fish and chips good enough to draw in some of Malibu’s famous British celebrities. In the fall, the Atlantic lobster are joined by the local spiney Pacific lobster served with corn and other trimmings. Yum! And while it may seem weird to go to a seafood place to eat beef, their hamburgers are also really good. Or try the $150 Seafood Tower, the Caribbean Stone Claw Crabs or the Snapper Ceviche. They also have sea urchins, Calamari Steak, Broccolini, Fried Shrimp, Maryland Style Crab Cake, Pound O’ Mussels, Chorizo and Clams, plus a variety of soups, salads and sides. Their Tiki Bar window serves an array of wines and craft beers that Tompkins refers to as “an eclectic mix of craft beers from as many California producers as possible.”
PINK’S HOT DOGS IS A CAKEWALK As the kids say, “It’s all good,” which probably explains the unbelievable crowds Broad Street attracts. If you thought Pink’s Hot Dogs was a long line, Pink’s is a cakewalk compared to Broad Street. On a weekend or holiday, the line winds out into the parking lot and turns right 300 feet on Google Earth as the seagull flies. Los Angeles people hate to wait, but sometimes there’s an hour wait to order and pick up your food. Another cool facet of Broad Street is how they use a bullhorn to announce whose food is ready, and people go running up to the window before they pass out from anticipation and starvation. To quote Brad Pitt from “Inglorious Basterds”: “Souuuuuund good??!?!? ” It is good! Read Broad Street’s Yelp reviews and they are generally favorable, although some people will complain about the long waits, and others about the prices. says, and for her, there was no other choice but L.A. She finds Mono B to be not only a perfect fit for her skillset, but small enough to afford her the opportunity to learn by doing nearly everything needed to market the brand online. She’s done all the email marketing, advertising, styling for the photo shoots, social media and much of the branding, such as naming the styles for the website. For someone with a passion for fashion, she considers it a “gift” to be able to do a bit of everything and to be able to apply creative inspiration to every facet of marketing. “I'm definitely in a more elevated role than someone my age with a normal trajectory would have had. A lot of what I've been doing is extreme trial and error and spending a lot of time teaching myself things I don't know,” Katherine admits. “Some people thrive having a mentor to hold their hand and teach them the ropes. I thrive having the freedom to do things the way I want and figure it out along the way.” Mono B apparel is designed with balance and inclusivity in mind. Inclusion for customers can be as simple as being able to find the really cute styles in “curvy” sizes for a larger frame, or that, for the month of May—Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month—every purchase was accompanied by a healing or invigorating cosmetic mask produced by Lapcos, and designed to introduce the best of Korean skincare science, a.k.a. “K-Beauty,” to the U.S. The cross-marketing effort was not only hugely successful for both brands, it yielded donations of 10% of proceeds to the Asian Mental Health Collective (https://www.asianmhc.org/), as May is also Mental Health Month, and because giving back is a core company value for both sisters and their brands. As they put it, “The only thing better than looking good is feeling good, and when you give to others (especially those most in need), you never have to choose between the two.” In the past year, other philanthropic partnerships have included the Downtown Women’s Center, Dress for Success, the Black Women’s Health Imperative and donations to frontline health workers and hospitals. Robin now tells her peers, “Don't be afraid to get out of your comfort zone, whether that means moving across the country or leaving a job where you’re not thriving. So many people are afraid of the unknown, but once you embrace it, you're drawn to it more and more because the return is so incredible.”

It’s been a great experience and I can’t thank Dr. Khanna enough.” Alfred – “Ever since I can remember I have been wearing glasses. My vision kept getting worse and worse and then I had to switch to bifocals. When I left after my procedure my vision was clear and the next day my vision was already 20/20. It was amazing, the world was in 4k! I could not be happier.”

GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!
ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy

SYCAMORE SCHOOL STUDENTS, PARENTS, TEACHERS AND STAFF GATHERED AROUND A HOLE DUG IN THE GROUND TO BURY THEIR LISTS OF THINGS THEY “CAN’T” DO—YET— AND CELEBRATE THE POSSIBILITIES OF WHAT THEY CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER. “It truly is a community thing,” says Cofounder and Director Tedd Wakeman, who began holding “I Can’t” burial ceremonies with students in South Central L.A., where “there was not a lot of grass or trees, but we dug a hole and went through the process of physically burying the words “I can’t” in order to help create a growth mindset in the children.” Eliminating the words “I can’t” from students’ vocabulary makes space for what CAN be achieved

Held every three years as new students enter Sycamore School, this year’s ceremony featured New Orleans-style upbeat jazz music to celebrate letting go of what students think they can’t achieve while looking toward what they can do.
By encouraging each other, the children provide support and resolve to achieve their goals and overcome challenges. “The biggest takeaway is the kids’ genuine desire to not quit, not give up and embody the growth mindset,” says Wakeman.
