during what is not normal times, is that we get stronger, and we often learn by failing before we are ultimately able to succeed. In this issue we present a feature article about “Wellness.” Wellness comes in many forms, but at the end of the day it comes down to the entirety of your mind and body. How do we remain healthy in a contagious, unhealthy environment? How do we maintain our most personal relationships when we are often “too close for comfort”? How do we keep our bodies healthy when we take a risk even just going to the gym? Kids have been suffering from a lack of social interaction and the difficulties of remote learning. Now they are back in school, but how safe is that and what about masks and Covid testing? Going back to Nietzsche, I have crossed several benchmark challenges in my life.

COPING WITH COVID (CONTINUED) So what can adults and children do to overcome these challenges? Bethany Vaudrey, PsyD
The number one action is to reach out to others, whether it be a friend, a therapist, a member of the clergy or someone else you trust. “It’s important to find someone you can connect with,” says Lori Donnelly, a clinical hypnotherapist who founded Wolf Creek Wellness with offices in Santa Rosa Valley and Tarzana. “You have to have that rapport, and if it doesn’t feel comfortable or you don’t click, then you should find someone else. However, it’s important to have someone who will challenge you as well. “People don’t need to suffer,” she adds. “There are ways to move away from your pain and out of your trauma and stop the loop of suffering. People get stuck and they just don’t know there are options out there or they think that no one can help, or they are stigmatized by therapy.” “If you don’t reach out or express it, then you’re internalizing it and that weighs on you and creates anxiety, depression and anger,” says Henderson. “These feelings are going to come out at some point, so letting it out little by little is a release. There is support out there, so reach out.”

MALIBU’S SEARCH FOR MEANING (CONTINUED) “That experience showed me that it is possible to save a home in such a firestorm, but I would not encourage any person to try it!” says Cary. Fast forward 23 years to Cary again fighting fires in the same location—this time to save George C. having a “falling out” with him. Cary recalls her inviting them over for a friendly barbeque and walking on the beach having fun and sharing life stories. Eventually, “I really fell in love with her,” admits Cary, to the chagrin of his buddy Alden. Cary recalls being woken up one night by a 3 a.m. call from neighbor Gwen Stevens. “How would you and Genevieve like to come over and meet the Rolling Stones?” Gwen had asked. Getting dressed, they walked down the street to Gwen’s, where six limousines were parked. Cary was introduced to Mick Jagger and the band, and the party continued until about 5 a.m. Another fond memory Cary shares about Genevieve is when Paul Newman came over for dinner. “Newman had a good sense of humor and was a likeable type of guy,” says Cary, noting that when the three of them were in the kitchen, Newman came up with an idea: “I wonder if we could get the oil out of an avocado? Let’s try cooking it in this frying pan.” While impressed with Newman’s exploratory attitude, Cary noted that his idea “didn’t really work, but who knew his name would be memorialized on products in supermarkets around the world?” he jokes. 18

It’s been a great experience and I can’t thank Dr. Khanna enough.” Alfred – “Ever since I can remember I have been wearing glasses. My vision kept getting worse and worse and then I had to switch to bifocals. When I left after my procedure my vision was clear and the next day my vision was already 20/20. It was amazing, the world was in 4k! I could not be happier.”

ERIN
BROCKOVICH, WHO ALSO HAILS FROM KANSAS, FOUND HERSELF CAUGHT UP IN A WHIRLWIND THAT SET HER ON A PATH TO DISCOVERY. Her famous story of a single mom fighting the odds to bring justice to residents of Hinkley, Nevada, who were poisoned by toxic water is chronicled in the feature film, “Erin Brockovich.” Despite the naysayers challenging her ability, Erin persisted and prevailed. “You’re not a doctor; you’re not a scientist; you’re not a lawyer. What do you know?” Erin recalls people questioning her when she began investigating the connection between cancer incidents and toxic tap water. “You don’t have to be an expert to know something is wrong. I’ll never forget that day in Hinkley—the perfect storm came together; I had nothing to lose and everything to gain,” she says, noting that she learned to follow her intuition at a young age. “As a kid l was always outside. I felt embraced by the environment. It taught me about observation—when to be still, when something was wrong; when it’s in trouble, I was in trouble,” says Erin, who recalls running though the wheat fields, catching fireflies and walking with her father alongside the streams in the countryside of Lawrence, Kansas.
