It’s not hard to find interesting people, places and events to spotlight because our community is full of great people doing amazing things. They are starting unique businesses, volunteering for local and international organizations, building up our business leaders, and leading our children into the future. This really is a great place to call home! Here at Lee’s Summit Lifestyle we make a determined effort to bring you the best of what Lee’s Summit has to offer each and every month. But like us, we also know you like to get out of town every once in a while. Around Town CITY SELECTS NEW POLICE CHIEF After a national search and extensive interviews with staff and community-wide stakeholders, the City of Lee’s Summit proudly announces the selection of W. Travis Forbes as the new police chief. Forbes will join the City on September 2, after having served in law enforcement for 22 years for the City of Independence, most recently as deputy police chief since 2013. “I am excited about the opportunity to work in the growing, future-focused community of Lee’s Summit,” says Forbes. “The Lee’s Summit Police Department (LSPD) is a high-quality, professional organization that is well respected in the law enforcement community. I look forward to working with the public, local government, businesses, civilian employees, and officers to maintain a safe and desirable City for all to thrive in.” His wife, Michelle, is a middle school business teacher in the Fort Osage School District. They have three children, 20-yearold Tanner, 21-year-old Logan, and 15-yearold Raven.

AREA STUDENTS TRAVEL TO COSTA RICA Marcy Hess, Spanish teacher at Pleasant Lea Middle School, led students from Pleasant Lea Middle School, Summit Lakes Middle School, Lee’s Summit High School and Lee’s Summit West High School on a nine-day tour of Costa Rica in June with EF Tours. The highlight of the tour was visiting a school in Monteverde. Students brought school supplies for the children as well as monetary donations. The students and their families paid for the cost of the travel with students working at numerous fundraisers. The Costa Rican students danced for the group, followed by all students playing soccer. 16

EASTLAND GIVING CIRCLE RAMPS UP FOR 2014 GRANT

The final push for membership is on before the grant is awarded for 2014. Families in Need is the focus for the Eastland Giving Circle in 2014. This is the fourth year that the group of almost 100 women has joined together to improve the community through their charitable giving. They have given almost $87,000 to local non-profit organizations to meet needs in Eastern Jackson County. Past grants have been awarded to ReDiscover, St. Mary’s Manor, Drumm Farm Center for Children and Hillcrest Transitional Housing. ReDiscover will host a reception on September 8th in their Therapy Room – the project that benefited from last year’s grant. Guests are invited to attend. The Eastland Giving Circle was formed in 2010 by a group of charitable and civic-minded women dedicated to making a substantive impact on the well-being of Eastern Jackson County. FORD NAMED PLAZA ART FAIR FEATURED ARTIST Local artist and Lee’s Summit native Suze Ford has been named the Featured Artist for the 83rd Annual Plaza Art Fair. As the featured artist, Ford’s work will serve as the primary artwork for the Plaza Art Fair’s promotional pieces featured across the city in banners, ads and both online and printed materials. “Being the Plaza Art Fair’s Featured Artist is surreal and such an honor,” says Ford, whose oil paintings have been displayed in art events across the country. “There are so many amazing artists who come from all over the country to do this nationally-ranked show that to be chosen honestly made me tear up. It feels like a dream come true.” In the past nine years, Ford has emerged as a prominent local artist and has exhibited at multiple locations including the Crossroads Arts District, the Power & Light District and in galleries across the metro. Now with her custom piece for the art fair, Ford hopes to capture the essence of the vibrant Kansas City art scene. Ford currently lives and works in Lee’s Summit with her husband, Jose Luis Hernandez, and their daughters Isabella and Aurelia.

They all came together to raise more than $150,000 at Drumm Farm Center for Children’s Annual Benefit Dinner. More than 400 friends of Drumm Farm gathered in their newly improved campus for food, fun and a fabulous time. The sold-out event was made possible by many generous individuals and companies whose generosity makes Drumm home to many children and their families. The amazing support of the community has helped to transform Drumm’s campus, located on Lee’s Summit Road, and significantly increase their capacity to serve chil-

dren both on and off the campus. There is still much left to do as they strive to alleviate the impact of abuse and neglect in every child they serve. Thank you to the generous DrummMovers!

DISTRICT ARCHERY PROGRAM FINISHES SEASON ON TARGET The Lee’s Summit District indoor archery program wrapped up its 2014 season with a strong effort at the National Archery in the Schools Program World Tournament held in Madison, Wis. Longview Farm Elementary, Summit Lakes Middle School and Lee’s Summit West teams shot qualifying scores at the national level to advance to the World Tournament. From the nearly 2.15 million NASP archers worldwide, only 2,425 archers from 198 schools made the season-ending showcase. The Missouri State Champion team from Summit Lakes Middle School did one better than their national tournament standings, placing an impressive fifth in the middle school division at world competition, highlighted by Coby Ingram’s fourthplace podium finish. Longview Farm Elementary, placing 16th, and Lee’s Summit West, placing 23rd, had solid scores as well. Two days after the conclusion of the World Tournament, NASP held the All-Nations, All-Star Tournament pitting the top 16 archers Coby Ingram earns fourth place at the World Tournament. from the United States against the best from around the world. Lee’s Summit West All-American Shelby Winslow shot for the US and took home the Top Overall Female Award for the highest scoring average over the twoday event. Shelby’s scoring average was a world-class 295, out of a possible 300.

LSPD INTRODUCES NEW POLICE K-9 ENZO The Lee’s Summit Police Department recently hosted a reception at Police Headquarters to introduce the newest member of their Police K-9 Team, the two-year-old Belgium Malinois named Enzo. Officer/K-9 Handler Scott McMilian completed a short demo with Enzo, featuring some of the search techniques the dog is known for. Enzo was born in Holland and trained in the United States. He started his training in April 2014 and McMilian joined him in June. Enzo understands commands in German and English. He is a patrol dog, meaning he’s skilled in multiple techniques, including drug and article searches, human tracking, building searches and handler protection. Enzo replaces McMilian’s late K-9 partner, Jax, who died in January of intestinal cancer. Enzo will be Lee’s Summit Police Department’s 7th K-9 unit since the program’s establishment in 1992. Enzo’s training was paid for through community donations.

CARNIVAL FOR CASA IS BACK! our Paws at a time! What a delightful concept Terri Wible and her husband, Ken, have going in their world. The idea took root in their minds in July 2010 when they were trying to help their daughter, Adriana, who is now a 10-year-old fifth grader, function as a neuro-typical child, although she has autism. At that time, they were in the process of raising funds so she could have an autism service dog (ASD). The idea and their need has grown into an incredible passion project called Paws 4 Autism. As soon as they started they quickly realized many other local families were interested and also in need of help. Initially, their goal was to spread awareness and help families raise money. Now they oversee a community education outreach program, as well as a Nothing is imPAWSable funding program. Paws is the only agency in the country that not only trains autism service dogs but also provides social and communication skills programs for local youth. It is through these programs that families can realize the benefits of working with service dogs long before getting their own. Paws 4 Autism is currently working with 32 families in Kansas City, with a wait list of more than 200 and growing. “My husband and I have two children on the spectrum. Our other child, Craig, is also 10 and in fourth grade,” says Terri. “Our mission is to bring autism service dogs and related services, including community outreach and education, service dog awareness, informational training and social skills classes, to children

who demonstrate autism spectrum behaviors. Our vision is for all children on the autism spectrum and for those with spectrum behaviors to have access to specifically-trained autism service and/ or therapy dogs to assist with their peer interaction and improve social integration in their schools and communities.” In addition to her incredible organization, Terri is a board member for the Autism Society of the Heartland, and board member for the Kansas City Kite Club. Terri graduated from Blue Springs High School in and UMKC in with a degree in elementary education with emphasis in special education. She taught in the Kansas City, Mo., School District for several years before joining the family marketing business. “We have lived and worked in Lee’s Summit since 2006,” she explains. “Paws 4 Autism will always be centered in Lee’s Summit. Southeast Jackson County has few options to help those who are on the upper end of the spectrum. Before we got Adriana’s ASD, we were essentially prisoners in our home. Going out in public was a nightmare because she would get overstimulated easily. Five or 10 minutes was our limit before a meltdown would begin. Autism is not easily identifiable. Other parents would look at us in disgust because she was out of control. She was suspended many times in kindergarten. Adriana would rarely talk to anyone outside of family. We had an emergency exit plan for every excursion outside the house and I had to modify my career so I could work from home. ‘Date nights’

were when my parents would take the kids so we could sleep in peace. There was no social life for any of us.” Today, she raves about Grady, Adriana’s ASD, noting that now life is full of possibilities. They can go anywhere without fear of meltdown or looks of judgment. Adriana is happy to talk all about her ASD and how he helps her, as well as two other ASD that are being trained for clients. Paws 4 Autism board members are highly dedicated to helping spread the word and raise funds for this non-profit organization. “The moment I was introduced to Terri, I knew I needed to get to know her. She draws you in with her upbeat attitude and pulls you close with her passion and persistence. She is a true inspiration and will no doubt do great things for the families working with Paws 4 Autism,” says Board Member Jon Garlow, financial advisor for Cooper Wealth Management Group. Board Member Michelle Toomey is also grateful to be part of Paws 4 Autism. “It’s exciting to be a part of an organization that is destined for great things. I really feel that Paws is on the cusp of something very big; we are going to help so many families that are otherwise losing hope,” says Toomey. It is important to realize that Paws 4 Autism is 100 per cent volunteer driven and community funded. Terri says there are no other programs like this one in the country. “Unfortunately that also means that we do not fit in the stan-

dard criteria for available grants. We need business partners, sponsors and volunteers to continue to grow,” she explains. “With more than 200 youth on our waiting list, we know our services are desperately needed. Lee’s Summit and Southeast Jackson County youth need these services. We need to establish the PAWSabilities Resource Center so there is a place for these underserved youth and young adults to go for services and job skills.” Everything is PAWSable. owntown has always been an oasis for Lee’s Summit locals – an island of quaint retail and residential charm safely away from big-box sales and nondescript food. And while thousands routinely pack the streets during any one of the city’s numerous festivals, parades or weekend markets, one organization – Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street – is devoted to making sure even more people appreciate and experience what’s become one of the top small downtowns in the nation. “We conduct surveys with visitors and residents after Main Street events, and from those results and comments, we see that people are coming from all over to visit Downtown Lee’s Summit,” says Trisha Drape, executive director of DLSMS. “We also hear from these individuals that

Downtown Lee’s Summit is very special with a great vibe and a unique mix of one-of-a-kind, independently-owned stores, with the best customer service.” Drape, who has lived downtown for more than 20 years, is uniquely positioned to watch and help nurture downtown’s growth. After many years of volunteering for the organization, she became its executive director in 2011, the same year she was the recipient of the group’s Mary Stacy Ambassador of the Year award for her work in promoting downtown. The group was established as a nonprofit in 1989, a time when interest in downtown was ebbing as retail growth began in other parts of town. According to Drape, when the organization was formed 25 years

ago, there were 19 empty storefronts in the downtown area and a cycle of disinvestment. So a group of business, civic and city leaders joined forces to create DLSMS and set out on a plan to revitalize the city center. One of the first moves was to create Old Tyme Days, the weekend festival that eventually morphed into the Downtown Days event that annually draws more than 100,000 from around the region to sample artists’ wares, carnival rides and downtown food. Farmers markets, sidewalk sales and music festivals fill other weekends across the calendar and have turned downtown into a real destination. And now when the throngs invade downtown for any of the Fourth Friday celebrations or weekend music jams at Howard Station Park on Fridays between Memorial Day and Labor Day, they walk among a bustling mix of interesting boutiques, antique shops, restaurants and more. But downtown isn’t just for the festival crowd. Drape says downtown currently enjoys a 92 percent occupancy rate, becoming “the heart of the community where people gather” to work, live, shop and play. Key to the resurgence has been the group’s focus on helping grow downtown while staying true to its history and design standards that honor the city’s roots. The group is accredited through the National Trust Main Street, a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The group’s small staff, board of directors and volunteers not only put on the events during the year but also work to educate property owners about design standards, host free business seminars for merchants and promote the downtown community to visitors. “Our mission is revitalization and historic preservation,” Drape says. “Part of revitalization is organizing programming that strengthens and promotes the downtown central business district. Part of pre-

serving historic buildings and developing design standards leads to a sense of place for all in the community.” The DLSMS has grabbed plenty of kudos for its work. It’s Downtown Farmers Market has been named the top market in Missouri for the past three years and is considered among the top 10 nationally for medium-sized markets. The group is the only Kansas City-area recipient of the Great American Main Street Award, which it received in 2010.

DLSMS will celebrate its 25th anniversary in December, but it won’t rest on the plaudits. A full year is ahead: the Farmers Market Harvest Fest comes October 4, the Mayor’s Tree Lighting is on November 21, the Emerald Isle Parade is March 14, 2015, Music in the Park starts May 22, 2015, and Downtown Days returns June 5-7, 2015, with many special retail events in between. KD is an insidious disease. PKD—Polycystic Kidney Disease— claims people of all races, nationalities and socioeconomic demographics. It is one of the most common, life-threatening genetic diseases and it strikes both adults and children. It is painful: while the average size of a healthy kidney is that of a human fist, polycystic kidneys can grow as large as a football, and can weigh up to 30 pounds. There are two types of PKD: ARPKD and ADPKD. Both are genetic, and there is no cure or treatment for either. There is a 50 percent chance that parents with ARPKD will pass the disease to each of their children, and PKD does not skip a generation. More than 50 percent of people with ADPKD will develop kidney failure by the age of 50. The recessive form of PKC, ARPKD, is rare and occurs in 1 in 20,000 people. ARPKD affects boys and girls equally, and often causes significant mortality in the first month of life. The PKD Foundation, headquartered in Kansas City, is the second largest funder of PKD research and the leading authority on PKD research, education, advocacy and 32

awareness. With one goal in mind—finding treatments and a cure for PKD—the PKD Foundation is a labor of love for many who work tirelessly to lend support and encouragement to those fighting this disease. Nicole Harr volunteered for 10 years before assuming the role of chapter education manager. Harr lives with PKD and says that the Foundation is the only organization solely dedicated to PKD patients. “PKD is a family disease, and because there is no cure, it’s a marathon rather than a sprint. The people we serve are affected differently by the disease, at different times through their own journey. We are a resource for those dealing with a diagnosis and for those who love someone who has been diagnosed,” says Harr. While the executive structure of the PKD Foundation is national and boasts some of the most recognized names in medical research and fundraising, it’s the 60 plus local chapters that serve as an easily accessible, welcoming and constant support structure for anyone seeking information about the disease.

The Foundation’s annual Walk for PKD, its signature fundraising and awareness event, will take place this fall in 53 cities across the country. This year’s walk, on September 13, is the 14th in the Kansas City area. It features a Penny Kids Dash as well as a two-mile walking trail. Those who participate raise funds through personal fundraising; those funds are used for research, education, advocacy and support. Sue Full, volunteer walk coordinator, says that the walk has a variety of resources for families facing PKD. Nurses and clinical study coordinators are onsite to conduct screenings and share information, and participants quickly connect to offer each other support. There are resources for family members who do not have PKD but who have family members with the disease. “The event is a welcoming, easy place to go to figure out what someone really needs to get a grasp on the disease,” says Full. “We work very hard to meet people where they are, and to help them from that point on.” “Many patients feel very alone,” says Harr. “Because this is a family disease, there can be different family members struggling with different issues at any given time. It’s about them. the comfort of being with others who understand what living with the disease means that is the most important part of the event. Others come to feel a sense of empowerment, and because they know that every step they take is an investment in the future not only of their immediate family, but also in their larger PKD family and the work of the Foundation. “It is hope,” says Harr. “Hope is what we feel before the walk, when we’re telling others what we’re doing and why. Hope is what we feel while we’re walking, because we’re excited that we can actually do something instead of idly waiting for a cure. Hope is what we feel after, because we know that we’ve done something good, something that matters.

When we go to the walk, and we see others who are also living with the disease walking, fighting and smiling, it’s encouraging to those who thought they were alone. It’s truly inspiring to see those connections happen,” she says. “It’s true that everyone can do this,” says Full. “Everyone is welcome to be a part of this community, and most of our walkers find that it’s very easy to invite people who haven’t yet been touched personally in some way by PKD. irector Lombardi wasn’t sure at first. When he was approached by C.H.A.M.P. (Canine Helpers Allow More Possibilities) in 2002, when he served as Director of Adult Institutions, he questioned whether the idea of having service dogs train and live with inmates was a good idea. “I wasn’t sure how the staff would react, or if they would accept having dogs inside the prison,” he says. He agreed, though, and in 2002 certified trainers started to show inmates at the correctional center in Vandalia how to train dogs in a humane way. The dogs lived in crates in the dormitories, and the prison staff noted dramatic improvements in the attitude, behavior and demeanor of not only the handlers, but of the staff. Lombardi retired in 2005, then was nominated by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon to the office of Director of the Department of Corrections in December, 2008. Once confirmed in January of 2009, Lombardi expanded the concept and proposed that instead of working with service dogs, they work with local shelters and the community at large to save dogs from euthanasia and, at the same time, to improve the morale of inmates and staff. He presented his idea to the wardens at each facility, stressing that the program is voluntary and that no funding would be taken from state sources. “Not one tax dollar,” he says, talking about how the program is 36

funded. “This program runs on donations and volunteers. When people donate through the website, those funds go to help defray the costs of food, toys and everything else the dogs need.” The program is now in 19 of the 20 correctional facilities in Missouri, and this past summer marked a new milestone: the program celebrated its 2,500th adoption. The logistics work like this: a coordinator at each facility works with animal shelters to move a dog from the shelter into a program at the correctional institution. Certified trainers work with each inmate to teach them how to train their dogs. Through the inmates’ training, the dogs learn basic obedience skills and are socialized. Once the dogs complete the program, they graduate and are eligible to be adopted through the original shelter. Each facility has its own rules to determine which inmates will be part of the Puppies for Parole program. The dogs stay with the inmates 24/7, even sleeping with them in their respective cells. Lombardi says there’s something magical about seeing an inmate—someone who is often not able to express emotion or show love—interact with a dog. “These dogs, they bring unconditional love and acceptance to the offenders,” says Lombardi. “Background doesn’t matter to the dog. They both get a second chance.” The dogs that are placed with Puppies for Parole are those who

have been deemed unadoptable. They are often abandoned and abused, unwanted and unloved. Heddie Leger, Certified CPDT-KA and trainer for Best Friends Canines with Careers Trainer, says that most of the dogs are broken in some manner. They may have trust, fear or social issues. “This is a life changing relationship,” she says. “They help each other change and grow for the better.” Leger says that the only absolute of the training program is that everything is positive. The focus is for the inmate to catch the dog doing something good, and then to reward that behavior, rather than to punish the dog for doing something wrong. “They’re learning life skills through this program,” she says. “They learn to solve problems, to work as a team, to function in groups in which people have different opinions. They learn how to handle all of this, and more, in positive ways, and how to redirect the dog’s behavior to alter outcome of a given situation. They learn that life is controlled by how we respond to it,” she says. “I’ve seen men and women go on to excel in jobs, earn their GED and aspire to lives that are bigger than what they once thought possible because of this program. It’s easy, sometimes, to assume the worse and think there’s only darkness in a place like a correctional facility. But even in darkness there’s a glimmer of light. When we focus on that, it gets brighter. These dogs have proven to shine the light in people’s lives.” The dogs also go on to lives bigger than themselves. Bella, a Golden Retriever mix, was trained at Crossroads Correctional Center and now takes care of Eli, a six year old in Illinois who suffers from Sensory Processing Disorder and Hypogammaglobulinemia, an autoimmune deficiency. Eli’s weekly infusions are difficult but more tolerable now with Bella at his side. Then there’s Natalie, a 1-year-old Weimaraner with hints of Lab and German shorthaired pointer, who was rescued by the Cameron Animal Shelter in 2013 and placed with Crossroads Correctional Center. She was malnourished and under-socialized, but because of her sweet disposition and eagerness to

She received advanced training to work with children testifying in particularly difficult court cases, and now spends her days at the Jefferson County courthouse. Larry and Johnny, a yellow Labrador/Shepherd mix and a chocolate Labrador mix, respectively, both received ‘man down’ training at Algoa Correctional Center and now spend their days at Loch Haven Nursing Home in Macon, Missouri. It wasn’t long before Larry implemented his training: one night in November, 2013, a resident who can neither hear nor speak fell out of his wheelchair and had no way to call for help. Larry discovered the resident, and alerted the staff by barking. Even after a nurse arrived and the resident was alright, Larry stayed with him, offering comfort and support. Lombardi says it’s difficult to quantify the benefits of the program. Offenders are given incentive to improve their behavior, staff morale is enhanced and offenders have the chance to repay Missouri communities and repair some of the debts caused by their crimes. The main focus, however, is on the dogs and their second chance at finding suitable homes. Leger says that’s what keeps her and so many other volunteers motivated to keep coming back. “It’s the next dog, the next person,” she says. “There will always been an unending need to find good homes for shelter dogs. ew things are more rewarding than having a dog thank you with a big smile and a tongue hanging out, or a cat thank you with a loud purr of happiness. You can be the recipient of this gratitude by volunteering with the shelter pets at Great Plains SPCA. If you have a passion for animals, we would love to have you join our volunteer team and there are a multitude of ways to get started. Animal lovers of all ages - from children to seniors - can volunteer their time to help our animals. Children as young as 6 years old, alongside their parents, can be a part of our “Sparkle Crew,” preparing Kong toys and cleaning the adoption area, or they can get hands on and spend quality time with our felines. Children ages 11 and older can interact with our dogs under parents’ supervision. Once a child reaches the age of 16, they can volunteer at our shelter solo. Working with our pets fosters a real sense of respsonsibility and fun, and it’s beneficial for kids and pets alike. Charitable birthday parties, where people ask for donations of pet supplies in lieu of presents, are another great way for children to support the pets. Seniors can become a part of the SASSY (Saving Animals by Supportive Seniors and others Young-at-Heart) program, which has many programs to connect seniors with pets, including bringing them to our Pet Adoption Center to spend time with pets needing a little extra attention. 44

Volunteers are encouraged to come to our campuses in Merriam or Independence to walk or even jog with shelter dogs, a great exercise for both dog and person. Those who prefer our felines can spend time with our cats and kittens in private suites to help socialize them and get them ready for adoption. We are always looking for people willing to get hands on with mobile adoptions, dog washing, cleaning the facilities and yardwork. Volunteers who want to be on-site but not hands on with pets can help with fundraising events, adminstrative work and customer care. There are also ways to volunteer from the comfort of your own home. Volunteers can use Facebook and other social media platforms to showcase a favorite shelter pet, because simply sharing our pets’ photos can help get them adopted. People can also make dog toys using strips of fleece or cat toys using feathers and bells, which can provide entertainment to these furry friends. The bottom line is that everyone – young or old, onsite or at home, hands on or alongside – can volunteer with Great Plains SPCA and make a difference in a shelter pet’s life today. hen the school bells started ringing again in late August, Lisa Slagle was back in her classroom at Summit Christian Academy (SCA) where she started her 14th year in the first grade classroom. “I love teaching. I do not consider it a job, but a ministry,” says Slagle. “I count it a privilege to teach at this wonderful school.” A graduate of East Tennessee University with a degree in early education, God truly has blessed Slagle with the talent to teach and engage the students so they are motivated to learn. “One of my favorite activities is reading books to the students after lunch,” says Slagle. “I love to stop right at an exciting part and pretend we don’t have time to read anymore. The students will plead for me to keep reading. I love how they get so interested in the stories. Of course, I continue reading the story.” “From the moment you enter Mrs. Slagle’s classroom, you feel at home and at ease,” says SCA mother Sarah Coats. “When my daughter started at SCA mid-year, Mrs. Slagle greeted us and said, ‘Oh we are so happy to have you here. We have all been praying for you.’ She leads her classroom with patience, structure and love. She provides an environment where the children are each celebrated individually for their talents and abilities. She is such a treasure to have as a teacher!” Slagle’s faith is a part of her work, too. “I also love being a prayer warrior for my students and their families,” says Slagle. “I love hearing about my students praying for my family, too. It is such a blessing to know that we are all praying for one another. It is what makes our school so unique and special.” Like all of the teachers and faculty members at SCA, Slagle truly takes her job very seriously. In fact, sometimes her students even forget that she is their teacher. “A fun story,” shares Slagle. “It happens every year, even several times throughout the year. I will have a few students who will accidentally call me mom, instead of Mrs. Slagle. They seem to get a little embarrassed, but I always tell them I AM a mom so I am accustomed to answering to that. I don’t mind being called mom at all by my students. It is really a compliment and makes my heart smile. I do love them like my own children.” “Mrs. Slagle is a delight,” says SCA Academic Dean and El46

Sticky notes on her desk will always reveal what verse she is working to memorize.” Slagle has been married for 31 years to her husband Gregg. She has three children who have all graduated from SCA. Her oldest son, Jason, recently completed six years with the Coast Guard and is attending law school at Berkeley. Her son Chad is attending Texas A&M in Galveston and is majoring in maritime management. Her daughter Bri graduated from SCA in May and will be attending Longview Community College. In her free time Slagle enjoys NASCAR, watching football and HGTV, and baking and reading. ne of the less common but well-known sights and sounds of summer is a good, old-fashioned family game of backyard croquet. Who hasn’t enjoyed figuring out where to stick the metal U-shaped wickets to create the most challenging course for your friends and family? Figuring out which swing will work best and trying to remember the rules of the game from the last time you played... the satisfying sound of the whack of the mallet against the ball, and the mutual “ooo’s” and “ahhh’s” accompanied by making it through the hoop, or not. All that time you thought you were really playing croquet. However, that game we all know and love is called “9 wicket croquet,” a recreational version of the competitive sport of “6 wicket croquet” played around the world. Kactus Creek Croquet Club (KCCC) is located 5 minutes west of Zona Rosa in north Kansas City on a quiet hill in the “back yard” of Matt Griffith, owner and club pro. Though it truly is his back yard, it doesn’t feel that way at all. A builder by trade, Griffith is a champion-level croquet competitor who loves and advocates for the sport. “We teach you a whole new game,” says Griffith. “Golf croquet is the easiest game in the world, it’s nice and easy for people any age or ability to play. The basics are easy to learn, yet there’s always a new level for those seeking a challenge.” This fun, social version is different from backyard and competitive games. It takes 20-25 minutes to play a game. The goal for two teams of two people is to play to 5 points. One shot through the wicket scores a point and play moves on. Matt and other members coach and give tips until visiting players are comfortable. The club welcomes newcomers and anyone who wants to come play for fun. A community of friendly, experienced members are happy to share tips or play a game with you. Members like Deborah and Ron Millican who drive all the way from Lee’s Summit many evenings and weekends to play at KCCC. This croquet couple even has their own 9-wicket court in their back yard here at home, and they work with Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation each year to host a “T-Bone Tourney.” The club teaches members a variety of competitive croquet games for area and national competitions. on’t go in and ask for a piece of pecan or cherry pie at the Main Slice. Theirs is not that kind of pie. Subtle details everywhere in and around this quaint building hint at what kind of place this is, especially if you’ve been to Manhattan, N.Y., and even more so if you’ve eaten at a pizza place there. Back east, likely thanks to the Italian influence, the only appropriate word for pizza is the old-fashioned term “pie” and it is always offered with a pint of ale or two. “Pie and a pint” is just fancy (or Easterner) talk for “pizza and beer.” So the name also implies that this place offers an experience as well. That experience begins when standing on the sidewalk peering in. I absolutely love to visit Manhattan, and my Big-Apple radar must have been tuned in when I walked by the place one day before it even opened. The old-fashioned gold lettering on the window of this quaint little place drew me in. The door was open so I peeked my head in when they were still under construction, and fell immediately in love

with the authentic white subway tile installed with vintage flair on the façade of the long, custom-built, reclaimed-wood bar spanning one side of the restaurant. Once you enter the long, skinny restaurant with classic (and original) red brick walls, the only thing that betrays that you haven’t actually been transported to Manhattan is the fact that it is about 20 feet too wide to be a restaurant in New York City. Other enjoyable details include the hip Edison lighting, original wood floors, antique signage décor, and a huge black and white mural of the original downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street buildings. Our family considers ourselves not quite pizza connoisseurs but more like taste-testers; we enjoy trying out different pizzas and I’m pretty sure we’ve eaten every kind of it offered within the boundaries of Lee’s Summit, and much outside of it from many geographic regions. So though I’m no professional, I do know what I like and I really like Main

Slice pizza. It’s the crust. Isn’t it always the crust with pizza? To be upfront, I’m a thin crust girl. We are a mixed crust family so ordering pizza is always a challenge. Some of us like thin, some original, some thick, some are stuffed crusters. Main Slice intentionally only offers one choice because they wanted to master one. To me, their crust is perfection and will satisfy a mixed-crust group: it is not too thin and not too thick. They perfected the baking temperature (on a stone at 500 degrees) and time (for six to seven minutes so there really is hardly any wait) so that the crust is slightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. A delight to bite into and satisfying to chew. The owners say they are all foodies, so as much as possible everything is made fresh and from scratch. No ingredient has been frozen. The choices of what you can put on your pizza pie range from the traditional to modern ingredients. You can choose from their specialty pies ($14 to $22) or build your own ($12-$17+$1 extra per topping). Some of the specialty pies include

Veggie, KC Stockyard, Main Street, Cry’n Hawaiian, Mediterranean, Buffalo Chicken and Pesto Chicken. We ordered the Main-Gherita made with chicken, goat cheese, tomatoes and basil with their red sauce. The fresh ingredients complimented the perfect crust for a mouth-watering taste sensation. Their salad offerings are also wonderful. We quite enjoyed the Rainbow Chicken salad ($9.50) with Romaine and spring mix greens, chicken, pecans, strawberries, blueberries and feta cheese served with sweet vinaigrette dressing. The place is already becoming a downtown favorite and they offer a great deal for lunch: get a huge slice cut from the 18-inch size pie and a side salad for only $5 during the week. They have seating capacity for 85. Other specials, like their Nightly After 5, are available on their Facebook page or website. The beautiful bar offers a wide range of great options for your pint choice should you choose to complete your “pie and pint” experience.

ee’s Summit Mayor Randy Rhoads recently selected Steve and Sue Tominia, and their daughters Amy Robertson and Gina Seibel, as the recipients of both the 2014 Truman Heartland Community Foundation Citizen of the Year and the Missouri Municipal League Civic Leadership Award based on their participation in numerous community efforts throughout the years. “This is truly one of our active and dedicated Lee’s Summit families who demonstrate their love for this community through dynamic leadership, volunteerism and the spirit of entrepreneurism. We look forward to their continued good work and unwavering support of Lee’s Summit’s civic and business community for many years to come,” says Rhoads. The Tominia’s are owners of Cameron’s, a successful furniture retailer in downtown Lee’s Summit, since 2001. As business owners, they quickly became active members with the Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street (DLSMS) organization volunteering to serve on several committees and events. The Tominia’s and their daughters have individually and collectively shared their commitment and passions by contributing their time and talents to various organizations for the betterment of our community. The following are among the family’s outstanding achievements and civic involvement throughout the years: Prior to joining his wife and daughter Amy in the family business, Steve was vice president of operations for Durham School Services. He has served on DLSMS Board of Directors for 12 years, seven of those years as president. During his tenure as president, DLSMS received the Great American Main Street Award which recognized the Lee’s Summit downtown as “The Best Downtown in the Nation.” He was the recipient of the DLSMS 2010 Volunteer of the Year and currently serves on the Lee’s Summit 360 Implementation Committee, Lee’s Summit Civic Roundtable, and the Education Business Roundtable. Named Employer of the Year in 2002 by the Lee’s Summit Business and Professional Women’s Association, Amy has served on the Downtown Promotions Committee since 2001 and is the recipient of many DLSMS awards and recognitions including Volunteer of the Year in 2012. She has created and implemented several annual downtown retail events such as the Cookie Walk, Downtown Ladies “Night at the Movies” and Annual Ladies Night Out. Amy is married to Jake Robertson and they are the proud parents of Elizabeth and Zachary. Gina has served as director of communications for the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce since 2010. Prior to that time, she served as the assistant director of DLSMS. She is a member of the Lee’s Summit 360 Implementation Committee and a volunteer on the Truly 150 Sesquicentennial Planning Committee. She spends time volunteering for the Lee’s Summit Cares Youth Advisory Board, the Downtown Lee’s Summit Piccadilly Gala and the Chamber Young Professionals program. fter Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman died, court documents revealed that he didn’t want his children to become “trust fund kids.” Rather than establishing a trust, he chose to leave his fortune to his girlfriend who is also his children’s mother. The decision to create a trust is a personal one. But, beyond the potential of creating unmotivated children, a trust can be a smart fiscal choice and a way to insure the legacy you built during your life continues after your death. WHAT IS A TRUST?

A trust is a legal entity authorized by law. There are two basic categories: a living or inter vivos trust is created during your lifetime and a testamentary trust is established after death. The terms of a trust are many and limited only by your imagination. But, some of the most common reasons to establish a trust are to: • Dictate specific terms and conditions for the distribution of your wealth • Plan ahead and ease the burden for loved ones after your death • Avoid probate • Reduce estate taxes that could take a significant bite from your financial legacy • Allow for easier management of cash needs and assets if you become disabled • Establish continuity of asset management at death • Support a philanthropic cause THE BASICS

A GRANTOR is the person who establishes and transfers property into the trust. They can also be called a settler or donor. A BENEFICIARY is the person or entity that receives the benefits of the trust. A TRUSTEE has an important role. This is the person who manages and administers the trust. They hold a legal but not a beneficial title to the trust assets and have the power over the disposition of the trust property in accordance with the trust agreement. ROLE OF A TRUSTEE

Having a professional trustee is not a legal requirement. But it can be an enormous advantage to those who do not have the time or expertise to successfully manage their own trust. Professional trustees can be used in many different ways and serve many different purposes. But the main responsibility is to give clients peace of mind and excellent service in the management of their trusts. A trustee acts as a fiduciary for the trust. The role of trustee comes with a multitude of responsibilities. Therefore, trustees should be highly-organized, oriented towards serving others and have a solid understanding of financial basics. 56

A trustee’s main duty is to exercise reasonable care, skill and judgment for the trust. This means they must treat beneficiaries the same without favoring one over the other unless the trust specifies it. This also means investing the trust assets in a conservative manner that will result in reasonable growth with minimum risk unless the trust allows for a less conservative approach. Trustees cannot use trust assets for their own benefit unless the trust authorizes it. Trust assets must be kept separate from a trustee’s personal assets with separate checking and investment accounts. Accurate records must be kept, tax returns filed and reports sent to beneficiaries as the trust requires. Failure to act as a fiduciary exposes the trustee to a lawsuit from the beneficiaries if they feel the trust was mishandled or they were wronged. WORK WITH A PROFESSIONAL

ysticism, science and romance intermingle in Tracy Abrey’s captivating young adult novel, Blue Sun. Transplanted from her comfortable familiar life in Kansas City, brilliant yet shy teenager Genny Hazard finds herself on the Isle of Man, a foreign land where unusual occurrences and mysterious tattooed people seem to lurk at every turn. While Genny’s father, an eccentric scientist, is away at work for long stretches of time, Genny’s logical mind must try to accept and decipher events unfolding around her. Genny wonders if Ken, the handsome classmate who befriends and ultimately romances her, is truly interested in her as she is or if he has ulterior motives for cultivating a relationship. She sees him as a popular, athletic swimmer who is also very intelligent, and she doesn’t understand why he would want to spend so much time with someone who has always seen herself as quiet, unassuming, and quite plain looking. I enjoyed the progression of the relationship between Genny and Ken. Two seemingly polar opposites come together and help each other appreciate and accept different belief systems, while realizing that they have more in common than they could have imagined. The descriptions of the lush scenery, fantastical symbolism and intelligent dialog make this difficult to put down. I found myself rereading certain passages because I was afraid I had missed some minor detail. For example, at a mysterious picnic location deep

within a forest glen, Genny finds herself face to face with what she had initially presumed to be a unique insect, but soon realized that it was comprised of human characteristics. When the delicate female creature nears Genny, it says, “Shee Dy Row Hiu. Nar Jarrood. T’ou Balley,” which the handy Manx to English translation guide at the end of the book interprets as, “Peace be unto you. Never forget. You are home.” The Manx phrases sprinkled throughout the book add a unique element to the story. As familiar images start appearing in Genny’s dreams, such as the three-legged triskelion symbol; Genny realizes that some part of her own history is intertwined with the history of the island. We come to learn that Genny has always felt responsible for her mother’s death when Genny was a young child, and is also deathly afraid of water. Combined with her concerns that her father’s work is extremely dangerous to the entire population of the island, she is frightened and hesitant to find its true meaning. The characters in Blue Sun are all well written and even the stereotypical athletes and mean girls have secrets of their own (some of which may or may not be resolved until author Abrey completes her follow up novel). Blue Sun is an extremely satisfying novel. Certain aspects are somewhat predictable; however, there are enough plot twists, surprises and wonderful character interactions to keep the reader entertained from start to finish.

GMC’s Yukon XL is a Family Hauler ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN

y daughter-in-law took one look at the 2015 Yukon XL and described it as a family truckster. With room for seven, two video screens and a cargo space big enough for a week’s worth of luggage, that’s certainly an apt description. Plus, it can tow 8,000 pounds. There are two models, the Yukon and Yukon Denali. Both come in regular or XL sizes. The XL has a 130-inch wheelbase. The Denali is the brand’s flagship and it is loaded with luxury features and equipment. Prices for the Denali start at $62,680 and range to $65,380 for the XL. Prices for the Yukon XL start at $49,035 for a two-wheel-drive SLE. I drove a four-wheel-drive SLT from GM’s press fleet. It had a base price of $60,435 and a sticker price of $67,270. Because the redesigned Yukon and Yukon XL have roots in the new Sierra pickup truck they continue to be body-on-frame vehicles with V-8 engines and a good thirst for fuel. The four-wheeldrive test truck, with the 5.3-liter V-8 engine, has an EPA-estimated fuel mileage rating of 15 miles per gallon in the city and 22 on the city. In mostly city driving I averaged a bit less than 14 mpg, according to the trip computer. Two-wheel-drive models are rated at 23 mpg on the highway, which GM says is an improvement of nearly 10 percent. The test truck’s 355-horsepower V-8 was strong and responsive. It has variable valve timing, direct fuel injection and cylinder de64

activation. The change from V-8 to four-cylinder operation was barely perceptible on the highway. Full-size, nearly three-ton family haulers like the Yukon XL and Chevrolet Suburban are beloved by the faithful, many of who will hook up a horse or boat trailer. The test vehicle was equipped with the trailer-towing package that included a trailer brake controller. The Yukon’s interior has been refined and it is as comfy as the couch in your family room. The choice of materials rivals that of many luxury cars. A new feature is a front center airbag that deploys from the inside of the driver’s seat. It provides a center cushion between driver and passenger during side-impact crashes. The gauges are similar to that of the pickup truck, but the rest of the instrument panel is softer and more like that of a car. The 8-inch touchscreen for audio and navigation has a new menu system that seems less intuitive than before. A mid-year update will include an “always on” 4G LTE connection that enables the vehicle to become a mobile hotspot without relying on an individual’s smart phone. GMC will also offer an app shop so owners can download apps for weather, music, news and travel information. One item I really like is the driver’s seat that vibrates if there is danger of hitting an object or another vehicle. The rearview camera is useful for towing because the driver can use it to back up to the trailer hitch. The test car was equipped with second-row bucket seats that

are not only more comfortable than bench seats, but they also make it easier for people to get into the third row that is reasonably comfortable for adults. Warranty: Three years or 36,000 miles, with a five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Price: The base price of the test car was $60,435. Options included power sunroof, upgraded audio system with navigation and 8-inch touch screen, rear-seat entertainment system, 20-inch polished wheels, trailer tow package, 3.42 rear axle, two-speed transfer case, second-row bucket seats and theft deterrent system. The sticker price was $67,270. AT A GLANCE

Point: Few vehicles are more comfortable for hauling seven people and their luggage. The Yukon XL has excellent seats and a long list of convenience features. Counterpoint: This rig is expensive, thirsty and not easy to maneuver in tight spaces.

Bring The Zoo To Your Classroom for Free Thanks to the Zoological District funding, ZooED is a free program for students who attend school in Jackson or Clay County Missouri

• 2nd and 4th grade teachers will receive training, all curriculum materials, a free Zoomobile visit to their classroom and a free field trip to the Zoo! Lessons are aligned with the common core in language arts and math. • The 2nd grade curriculum is called Meet the Animals. Students will learn about 26 different Zoo animals and the people who care for them at Kansas City Zoo. • The 4th grade curriculum is called Manage the Animal. Sleeping on the Idea of a Cat WORDS DENISE SNODELL

n his memoir, Twitter-famous comedian Rob Delaney discusses how cats dominate his dreams. He doesn’t have a cat, but he says he loves them, and the random ones he encounters love him back. Delaney says when he sleeps, the imagined kitty scenarios go like this: “Often we’re talking and just hanging out, the way cats and dudes do, but just as frequently, I’ll be lying on the floor with five or so cats just sitting on my body, or worse yet, I’ll be just smooshing my face into a cat’s belly and tickling it and trying to wear it like a hat.” I can relate—even to the cat hat part (more on that later), but especially to the frequent feline dreams. Like Delaney, I am a cat-crazy person without a cat. As a child, I had a million kitties. It all started when one grouchy stray followed my mother home. He decided to stay. We were flattered. Newbies that we were, we gave him a cliché name, Tabby. Somehow, we loved our furry, orange squatter despite his apparent disdain for us. Even with his sneering attitude, he managed to open a floodgate for my family. Tabby made us realize we were cat people. Word got out to the feline underground. Cats flocked to our house. Some had kittens, which I thought was awesome. We kept a bunch, gave some to friends and quickly got hip to the neutering/spaying scene. Regardless, at any given time my childhood household claimed about 4 to 12 cat dependents. I remember a visiting uncle once said to my mother, “Sheesh. Every time you open a door here, five kitties run in, and five run out.” We were a feline depot. I was in heaven.

Every cat we adopted was way nicer than our original Tabby. All had adorable quirks. I have stories about each one, but not enough room here. I will tell you about Velvet, though. This kitty was around during my grade school years. She was a calico with a plush, black nose. She insisted on sleeping in my bed. Velvet was nuts + affectionate. Every night, she’d flop on my pillow and sometimes spoon around the top of my head. If I had an aerial photo of the two of us falling asleep, it would look like I was wearing a cat hat, which, I guess I was. Rob Delaney’s current dreams are my past reality. Fast forward to adult life. When my husband and I became parents of two active boys who are just 16 months apart, we were overwhelmed. We decided to wait a bit on cats. Lucky we did, because our guys eventually needed skin tests at the allergist’s office. Our minds were on pollen and mold, but the procedures threw in the feline factor and —ding, ding, ding—meow. Big time cat allergies. One son must avoid kitty dander, and the other is allergic to cat pelt. Cat pelt? Yes, cat pelt. I never knew that was a thing, but I won’t question it. All it took was one disturbing incident of seeing my firstborn react to pet mixer at a friend’s house. Scary, super-swollen eyelids are not his best look. Both boys are now in college. I’m hoping they’ll come home for many summers and semester breaks before they get their own dander-less, pelt-free places. This means kitties will remain only in my dreams for a while longer. The bright side? When I do eventually get a cat, I’ll have a name ready: Dandy McPelterson
