For over 50 years, our northern Colorado town of Loveland has been known as the "Sweetheart City" and every February, in honor of Valentine's Day, we share that title with the world. We spread love to homes and cities all over the country and the world, we celebrate and highlight love throughout our town, and we create for our community, out of love. It would only seem fitting that our February issue's focus be Local Love. The businesses and humans that pour their heart and soul into what they do are what make this community so special. They share their talents and passions with the rest of us, and through that courage, they inspire us to do the same. Each small business has a story, a journey, and a unique authenticity that makes them one of a kind, and man...there are so many amazingly talented people doing so many wonderful things out there. As you read through the pages of this issue, highlighting just a few local programs and businesses in our community, we encourage you to go visit that boutique you've been eyeing, try that new coffee shop or restaurant and ask people about their stories, and find a new favorite local spot. Get to know your neighbors, spend time with your friends and loved ones, and embrace the spirit of this month, even if you think it is corny, and celebrate the good that is in your life, whatever that may look like for you. “Two feet move our body. Four feet move our soul.” If you have lived in Loveland, or taken a drive to Estes Park or perhaps Carter Lake, you have more than likely driven past the Hearts & Horses nonprofit Therapeutic Riding Facility just west of town on County Road 29. Nestled against the foothills of our little town is a haven and place to find peace. Its history and the healing it offers our communities are unimaginable, and yet, most are unaware of the stories that lie within its fences or the lives that are changing daily because of the services this facility offers. The impact and essential joy of being with horses is that they bring you into contact with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit, and freedom. The programs offered at Hearts & Horses are aimed at assisting with healing inside and out and finding a connection to ourselves and within nature. To witness first-hand the difference their therapies can make in the lives of those with disabilities, cognitive

decline, or traumas is transformational and humbling. Their motto is “Two feet move our body. Four feet move our soul.” This rings true as they can see the peace that is found through the interactions each soul experiences while connecting with their horses. The trainers and therapists working these programs know that the animals can bring about a calmness that those struggling with mental health sometimes lack and that these therapies are able to give them a gift that they cannot always find within their own storms. The reason their equine riding therapy is so effective for those with disabilities is that the natural movement or gait of a horse simulates the human walking movement in a way that cannot be replicated mechanically. This equine-assisted activity is designed to aid those with disabilities in promoting strength, helping develop balance, increasing flexibility, improving coordination, and helping their breathing; CONTINUED >

not to mention the mental and social benefits it enhances including improving social and coping skills and helping build self-confidence. While riding, participants must make constant postural adjustments to maintain their balance, which in turn increases their overall orientation and body awareness. In terms of trauma, the experience of riding and taking care of the horses that the participants get to be involved in shows them what choice looks like. That the horses are willingly engaging with them, and they are not trapped into that experience, displays for participants that they can mirror that choice in their own lives and their own healing journeys. Caring for and learning responsibility for another creature’s soul helps them treat themselves in the same manner. This is incredibly powerful in helping them learn to respect limits and establish boundaries of their own for them to grow and heal. From horses, you not only learn about the horse itself, but about yourself and about life. On top of their therapeutic riding program, they also feature several other services available to the community that offer connection, healing, and growth. Some of these services include but are not limited to, a therapy service program, a program for at-risk youth, a veteran’s program, services aimed at helping elders with memory and dementia development, equine therapy educational courses, and they also host retreats and outreach groups. In addition, they also host an annual fundraising gala called The Lucky Hearts Gala, held this year on September 28th. Originally started in January of 1997 by a small group of volunteers, Hearts & Horses was aimed at replacing a local

therapeutic riding center that had dissolved. Through local donations they began classes in August of 1997, leasing facilities at now nearby Ellis Ranch. Aiming to have their own land and facilities to operate out of in the future, they began focusing on a long-term plan to gain capital. In the fall of 1998, the current ranch property became available for purchase. Through much research and hard work on the best financing options for the organization, there was a lease-purchase contract put together with a local developer. Hearts & Horses moved into its own facility on June 8th of 1999 and through the determination and perseverance of staff, volunteers, and community members, Hearts & Horses 23 acres officially became mortgage-free in May of 2016. Their growth is continual, beginning with only a handful of volunteers and 64 participants, Hearts & Horses now services over 800 participants annually with the help of over 1600 volunteers. Their volunteer program is one of the largest in Larimer County, speaking volumes about the power of the healing medicine offered within their 23-acre home. However, if you speak with any of the staff or volunteers at Hearts for Horses, they will tell you that the real heroes of the organization are the animals themselves. They share with us that the horses see the real you, and that being seen can be incredibly healing. They know that the horses listen to what is not spoken, to what lies in the heart, and they reflect that back to us, they let us hear the longing of our soul. Every horse carries the wisdom of healing within its heart, and they offer that healing to any human who possesses the humility to listen.

Although our town’s name does not originate from any type of romantic inspiration, we have still come to be known worldwide as “The Sweetheart City”. The history of how our quiet town earned that nickname is somewhat of a lesser shared story. In the early 1950s, Loveland’s postmaster, Elmer Ivers, decided that the town could capitalize on the popular misconception of its name and we then began promoting our aptly named town as “The Sweetheart City”. Over the years, Loveland has become famous for many of its February Valentine’s traditions, including the Loveland Valentine's postmark and re-mailing program, Miss Loveland Valentine, having a Valentine designed specifically for the town, and most visibly notable throughout town, the Loveland Hearts Program. For more than 40 years, every February the streets of our sweet little town are lined with hundreds of red wooden hearts. Hung up by the city of Loveland, each personalized heart is secured to streetlights and telephone poles throughout town, all boasting unique messages containing words of affection, devotion, and admiration in just 25 letters or less. Originally, this tradition began with a local group named The JC’s, who began by hanging a few hearts around town decorated with normal generic Valentine’s sayings, much like those you would find in a box of candy hearts. Eventually, no longer wanting

to spearhead the project, it was taken over and has been led by the Thompson Valley Rotary Club since 1992. As a unique fundraising opportunity, Rotary offers for the hearts to be personalized with individual messages of love and adoration every season. This tradition has become so popular that the hearts normally sell out before the month of December even fully begins. Once orders are closed, every heart is re-painted red to provide a blank slate for each new year’s messages of love. They are then hand stenciled and personalized one by one, according to their order’s requests by Thompson Valley’s National Honor Society

Organizing the stencils

The message it really shares is larger than what we see. A gift given out of love, created with love, that then gives back, from love. students, Interact Clubs, and Thompson Valley Rotarians. A portion of the paint used for the Heart Program every year is also donated by Guiry’s Paints. The painting of the hearts is worked on throughout the whole month of December in a locally donated barn space, accurately named “Cupid’s Workshop”. Beginning with only 25-30 hearts in its first year, they now create an impressive 390 hearts every year, adorning the town with hundreds of messages of admiration, love, and devotion. A unique opportunity for all those involved, it really is a project filled with the goodness still surrounding us daily and provides volunteers and onlookers alike a chance to witness a part of something that gives back. The donated time, the declarations of love shared with the world, and the love poured back into the community are what make it so impactful. Although the program itself has grown in capacity, it still holds the same sweet message at its core - a gift given out of love, created with love, that then gives back, from love.

Noe Cantu of Wild Oats Sewing Company has stumbled upon just that. Like most of us during the pandemic, Noe discovered new hobbies and began questioning what it is he wants to be doing with his life. In turn, he found himself thoroughly enjoying the interests that he began to pursue. It all began with filling a need in his immediate community. At that time in the world, everyone needed a mask, to travel, to buy groceries, etc., and

He found that this task was a way to give back, to bring a lightness and purpose back into his life at a time when we, as a society all felt disconnected. As the world began to slowly re-open and remnants of some normalcy started to seep back into everyday life, Noe decided to take a leap of faith and invest in himself and his newfound joy in sewing. He purchased himself a better sewing machine and he hasn’t looked back since. From helping to provide a need, he unveiled something deeper within his heart. He started taking CONTINUED >

sewing classes, learned how to use his machine, and he then began doing machine repair. When he decided to open his own store, Noe found a ton of backing within the local sewing community from customers and store owners alike and through that support, he has been able to grow his business into what it is today. Although he may have arrived at his calling late in life, Noe is wasting no time. He has found that his definition of success has shifted in life, and he enjoys being able to work with people, build relationships in his community, share his passion with others, and make his store a place for everyone to explore something that brings them joy. Weaving his love and dedication into everything he does, one of Noe’s passions is to take items of meaning and re-purpose them into something that can be used and cherished again and again. Encouraging others to follow what brings them joy as well, he shares that the first step is always the most important, “Life is short, and we only get one shot at it, so really, just do what makes you happy. Take the leap and figure the rest of it out later”. Whether it be his Monday Sewcials, helping someone pick out a new machine, or helping them learn to sew, Noe strives to make everyone feel as though they have a place to belong at Wild Oats Sewing Company. Pouring his enthusiasm, his spirit, and his soul into everything that he does, he is encouraging and inspiring others to follow their hearts and do the same.
