For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Loveland & South City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous 2023. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you.

Financial Wellness During a Recession
Notes From Layman Lewis Financial Group
12
I NSP IR E D BY | FIN AN CE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S
We live in a world today that is increasingly focused on wellness, self-care, and mental health. Admittedly all these things are important to living a happy and healthy life, but a multitude of factors are involved, and they all must line up to be successful. While it may be hard to pinpoint one single focal point that contributes to all of these, I believe that maintaining your financial wellness would be at the top of the list for many. We define financial wellness as the state of well-being in which a person can manage their ongoing monthly bills, expenses, paying debts and then have the resources to address any unexpected financial emergencies that happen along the way. Meanwhile, we also need to plan for longer-term goals such as saving for retirement, college funds, and any large-scale purchases. Clearly, there are many considerations that come into play to reasonably meet these objectives, all while enjoying life. This can be further exacerbated by all the things that are beyond any one person’s control. Things like inflation, rising interest rates, stock market volatility, as well as an impending recession can complicate the process of becoming financially fit. To be financially well during turbulent economic times there are some key factors that are involved. For many having a strict budget is not too common, but when the economy begins to contract, knowing where your money goes can be very advantageous. This allows us to be more rational about elective purchases when we understand how that can impact our ability to pay for our other obligations, like the Excel Energy bill. It also gives us a better determination of how much money we could be saving for those longer-term goals like retirement instead of frittering that money away on something else. By maintaining a reasonable budget and working within those parameters it can also reduce the risk that we need to use leverage by taking out loans or using credit cards excessively. This can also be addressed by maintaining an emergency fund that can be easily accessed to pay for unexpected things that would result in some
type of financial hardship. There are lots of “rules of thumb” here on the amount you should have, but every person’s situation is different and being candid about your situation will prove beneficial. For some, the emergency fund may be there to pay for a hot water heater or furnace. For others, it may be the safety net in case of a layoff or otherwise. This is where debt becomes a critical component of your financial wellness. While there are many “good” attributes of debt there are also many potentially negative ones as well. So, maintaining a healthy relationship with debt becomes paramount when the economy changes its tune and our dollars become exceedingly more important. If our relationship with debt becomes unhealthy then that generally becomes a source of significant stress. Therefore, using a budget in conjunction with assessing debt can help to significantly alleviate the concerns that come with meeting your monthly obligations. Much of this can be attributed to “living within your means” which is not always easy or popular in our social media-obsessed world. Which emphasizes the point of having a budget, because that determines what your income must be. From here a person can then objectively look at how a debt payment can fit into their own personal budget. While all of these forces impact us in a general sense the outcomes will vary based on our own specific situation. This is why a personalized approach to planning for financial wellness becomes increasingly important. The financial wellness of a single 20-something is wildly different than that of a 60-something pre-retiree. So a different approach and focal point are going to be necessary depending on factors like life expectancy and the ability to generate income. For the 20-something, maintaining a steady income and emergency fund can translate to financial wellness for the most part. However, for someone approaching the golden years of retirement will have a much longer “to-do” list in order to feel financially fit. Keeping in mind that our single largest source of revenue in our lifetime is our own personal output. Once our CONTINUED >

We can never achieve success or financial wellness if we believe that things will never improve.
working years wind down our need for a consistent income does not and that income is the primary metric of financial wellness in retirement. Having assets is great, however, turning those assets into consistent steady streams of income can be the difference between success and failure. In order to achieve this, we need to invest and have our money work for us along the way. Which requires an investment plan that accommodates not only our objectives but our risk tolerance as well. Maintaining risk parameters that you understand and are comfortable with can help reduce the temptation to make those detrimental “knee-jerk” reactions when the markets get volatile. It can help us be diversified in our investments and look to use multiple streams of income rather than relying on just one single source. Keeping a good perspective is often easier said than done especially when it seems that the end of the world is imminent. I always try and remind folks that the end of the world can only happen once, and while I say this tongue-in-cheek, it still rings true. We can never achieve success or financial wellness if we believe that things will never improve. This is especially true in investor behavior when we see a market decline and it becomes reactionary to either stop investing or to pull back. It's funny because when we as consumers see things go on sale, we get excited to make some purchases. However, when the stock market starts to go on sale, we clutch our wallets a little tighter and can too often miss those buying opportunities. So it’s

A PINCH OF THIS, A SPLASH OF THAT TIPS FOR COOKING WITH WINE ARTICLE DEBRA LAIZURE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

USING WINE IN COOKING INTENSIFIES FLAVOR AND ADDS ANOTHER LEVEL OF UNIQUENESS TO YOUR RECIPE. It gives a dish that extra something special to turn great-grandma's pasta sauce recipe into your own (and make your sister-in-law jealous). So grab that secret ingredient from the wine cellar and head to the kitchen. As Julia Child says, "I enjoy cooking with wine; sometimes I even put it in the food I'm cooking." Wine should be added to food early enough in the cooking process that it has time to simmer. As wine cooks down, the alcohol evaporates away and the flavors begin to concentrate. Use a light hand at first until you get familiar with cooking with wine. Typically, white wines impart their delicate flavor to seafood and dishes like chicken piccata and vegetable risotto. Red wine adds depth to bolder dishes like beef bourguignon, mushroom steak sauce, and of course, great-grandma's famous pasta sauce. Using wine in a reduction or to deglaze a pan creates an intense and complex sauce. It easily picks up those coveted brown bits that elevate the flavor of any dish. But be careful—light and overly fruity wines can ruin a sauce. The fruitiness is lost during the cooking process and will leave the sauce too acidic, ensuring those lovely brown bits have gone to waste.
AS JULIA CHILD SAYS, "I ENJOY COOKING WITH WINE; SOMETIMES I EVEN PUT IT IN THE FOOD I'M COOKING." RED OR WHITE? Let's be clear about what is considered a good cooking wine. The so-called "cooking wine" found in your local grocery store next to the fancy vinegars and Worcestershire sauce is a poor excuse for a cooking ingredient. They are low in alcohol content, highly acidic and contain a massive amount of salt. Instead, choose a wine you would pair with the meal. Use one that is fruity, medium or full-bodied, and with little or no oak flavor. Wine aged in oak barrels tends to turn bitter and harsh when cooked in food. For red wines, pinot noir and blends such as Côtes du Rhône will produce consistent results. Again, avoid wines aged in oak such as the robust cabernet sauvignon. White wines should also be dry and full-bodied. Try a sauvignon blanc, unoaked chardonnay, or even a French vermouth. LET'S TALK PRICE Does an expensive wine produce a better sauce than a wine picked from the bargain bin? Well, maybe. America's Test Kitchen tested sauces made from similar wines in the $5, $10, $20 and $30 price points. They discovered that the $5 wines cooked down to sweet, syrupy sauces, while the $10, $20 and $30 bottles were smoother, making sauces with multiple layers of flavor. Although tasters favored wines in the two more expensive price ranges, none thought the difference justified spending an extra $10 or $20. They found that limiting the price to $10 left cooks with plenty of good shopping options. JANUARY 2 0 2 3

COOKING TIPS

RED WINE REDUCTION FOR SAUCES Two tablespoons of this potent wine reduction can be substituted in a recipe, such as a pan sauce, tomato sauce or roast beef jus, that calls for one-half to three-quarters cup of wine. Add this reduction near the end of the cooking time—the way you might finish a sauce by swirling in some butter. The reduction can be kept for up to two weeks in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Makes about 2 tablespoons INGREDIENTS
+ 1 small carrot, chopped fine (about 2 tablespoons)
+ 1 medium shallot, minced (about 2 tablespoons)
+ 2 button mushrooms, chopped fine (about 3 tablespoons)
+ 1 small bay leaf + 3 sprigs fresh parsley + 1 cup fruity, smooth, medium-bodied red wine blend
INSTRUCTIONS Heat all ingredients in 12-inch nonstick skillet over low heat; cook, without simmering (liquid should be steaming but not bubbling), until mixture reduces to 1 cup, 15 to 20 minutes. Pour through strainer and return liquid (about 1/2 cup) to clean skillet. Continue to cook over low heat, without simmering, until liquid is reduced to 2 tablespoons, 15 to 20 minutes. 5 simple ways to relieve stress ARTICLE BRIANNA TOWNE, MS PHOTOGRAPHY ASHLEE KAY PHOTOGRAPHY
EVERYONE IS LOOKING FOR LESS STRESS. The problem is our identities are often tied to our stress levels. The ability to slow down, take a break and rest can only come when you allow yourself to let go of your identity as someone who’s always “on” and always providing or working or hustling. I see it daily with the clients I work with: constantly running in fight-or-flight mode, fatiguing adrenals, terrible sleep, but the real issue is that they’re not willing to allow themselves to rest because hustling is a part of their identity. Stress is a silent killer. It’s the precursor to almost every illness. While we need some level of stress in our lives, we can’t live in it constantly. Chronic stress can lead to everything from heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers and weight gain to depression and anxiety. The following are my 5 favorite ways to de-stress and turn off that constant fight-or-flight mode. In addition, try adding this warm ginger citrus tonic to your nightly routine to unwind and relax instead of grabbing a glass of wine.

:: S TE P 1 :: Meditation is one of the best ways to tap into the sympathetic nervous system and release stress. To start, sit quietly with your eyes closed for 3-5 minutes daily and just breathe. If thoughts come up, notice them, and let them go. Don’t cling. If you feel yourself getting distracted, count your breaths and focus on the gentle rise and fall of your belly. :: S TE P 2 :: The best type of exercise is one that you enjoy. Good news is, the exercise you enjoy can also help reduce stress levels. Yoga, running, weight training, cycling, whatever you enjoy. Aim for fitting in movement 3x/week for optimum benefits. :: S TE P 3 :: The foods you eat absolutely can contribute to your stress response. Large amounts of processed foods, added sugars, caffeine and alcohol can spike cortisol (stress hormone) levels. Opt for real foods, lots of veggies, fruits and whole grains to keep stress and blood sugar levels balanced. :: S TE P 4 :: Prioritize sleep. The number one indicator of chronic stress I see in patients is poor sleep. Turn off screens at least 1hr before bed, keep your phone out of the bedroom, get blackout curtains and an eye mask. If you find yourself tossing and turning all night, keep a journal or notebook and pen by the bed so you can get pesky thoughts out of your head. :: S TE P 5 :: Adopt an attitude of gratitude. Gratitude is an incredibly effective way to lower your stress levels while making others feel better, too. It’s a win-win! A few ways to express gratitude: write a list of 10 things you’re thankful for before bed each night, say ‘thank you’ more often, write letters to friends for no reason other than to say hi and thanks. Don’t forget yourself! Each day, thank yourself, your body, your mind, for all it does for you.

BRUNCH AFTER BARRE Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Assuming you are sweaty from leg lifts and flutter kicks, our suggestion is to layer your sweaty tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Since feet are one of the ways the body regulates temperature, you want to go airy with your footwear after a workout. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SATUR DAY Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look.
Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!
