Holly Jolly Holiday Cocktails WE DON'T KNOW IF THERE'LL BE SNOW, BUT HAVE A CUP OF CHEER!

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE CREATIVE AGENCY

H AP PY H OU R | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

The best part about the holidays is the chance we get to spend quality time with family and friends. Use your next hosting opportunity as a way to dazzle your guests at your holiday get-together with these libations. Easy to make and with a seasonal twist, each of these cocktails is guaranteed to get you and your guests in the celebratory mood and ready for the most wonderful time of the year. Just don’t rock around the Christmas tree too hard.

ROCKEFELLER SOUR

For this recipe, we chose Branch and Barrel Bourbon for its oak and vanilla notes, which add an interesting contrast to the sour cocktail. The result is a balanced and nuanced cocktail, with a stunning layered look, guaranteed to impress in both looks and flavor. Traditionally, a dry red wine is used as the float on the drink. For a holiday twist, use mulled wine, cooled, for a hint of warm spices.

INGREDIENTS • 1 ½ oz dry red wine (mulled wine for a holiday twist) • 1 ½ oz Branch and Barrel Bourbon • 1 egg white, separated from the yolk • 1 ½ oz fresh squeezed lemon juice • ¾ oz simple syrup

DIRECTIONS In a shaker combine whiskey, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white - without any ice. Perform a dry shake, meaning shake all the ingredients together without ice. Shake vigorously. Once the mixture is completely combined, add ice to your shaker and shake again. Pour all contents of the shaker into a highball glass. Using a cocktail spoon, slowly pour wine over the cocktail. Pour slowly so a layering effect occurs.

SANTA’S MILK AND COOKIES

The crispness of Breckenridge vodka pairs with Kahlua immaculately. Perfect for Santa to dunk his cookies in, this cocktail will make even the darkest holiday evening merry and bright.

INGREDIENTS • • • • • •

1 ½ oz Breckenridge Vodka ¾ oz Kahlua ¾ oz gingerbread simple syrup (recipe below) Half and half Cinnamon and sugar for the rim of the glass Sugar cookies for garnish

DIRECTIONS Rim a highball glass with a mixture of half cinnamon and half sugar. Add ice to the glass and pour ingredients in one by one, Breckenridge Vodka, followed by Kahlua, then the gingerbread simple syrup. Top off the drink with half and half. Garnish with Santa’s favorite sugar cookies. CONTINUED >

TO MAKE THE GINGERBREAD SIMPLE SYRUP

Simple syrup can change the flavor of any cocktail. Whatever flavor combination you can think up, you can easily make it into a simple syrup. The best part is it truly is simple.

INGREDIENTS FOR GINGERBREAD SIMPLE SYRUP • • • • • • •

3 cinnamon sticks Pinch of nutmeg 1 ½ cup of water ¼ cup of honey ¼ cup of molasses 1 inch of fresh ginger, roughly chopped 1 tsp vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a gentle boil. Let boil for five minutes. Watch the pot carefully as the sugar in the molasses and honey tends to boil up and may boil over. After five minutes turn off the heat and let the mixture cool. Strain out the liquid and then it’s ready to use.

These four classic cocktails got a holiday makeover to bring you and your guests festive cheer this season!

ROCKEFELLER SOUR This classic twist on a whiskey sour cuts the sweetness with the addition of a dry red wine. Colorado has a vast variety of high-quality local whiskeys which are widely available to make this cocktail a locally made holiday staple.

SANTA’S MILK AND COOKIES This whimsical twist on a white Russian cocktail is a crowd-pleaser. It looks stunning, and tastes like your favorite childhood gingerbread, with a boozy spin.

PA RUM, RUM, RUM, RUM This traditional cocktail is perfect for a cozy night surrounded by family and friends. A hot buttered rum is just what the night orders when the weather outside is frightful.

LOCO COCOA Take your hot chocolate to the next level with some sugar and spice. Tequila and chocolate are a match made in heaven. Take that paring and add a little spice for a unique drink that will warm you up in more ways than one.

PA RUM, RUM, RUM, RUM

This classic cocktail is perfect when serving a large group. Mix the butter with the cinnamon and brown sugar ahead of time. Your guests can spoon the butter into their mugs, and simply fill with rum and hot water. Top this decadent drink with whipped cream for a sweet finish.

INGREDIENTS • 1 tbsp unsalted butter at room temperature • 2 oz Montoya Rum • Hot water • Dash of cinnamon • 1 tbsp brown sugar • Whipped cream • Cinnamon stick for garnish

DIRECTIONS Spoon about a tablespoon of butter into a mug. Add a tablespoon of brown sugar and a dash of cinnamon. Pour one and a half ounces of rum into the mug and fill with hot water, stirring as you pour. When all the butter is melted and combined in the drink, it’s ready. Top with whipped cream and a cinnamon stick for garnish.

LOCO COCOA

The earthy notes of tequila bring out the similar flavors of the cacao in chocolate, making them a delicious pairing. A dash of cayenne gives this hot cocoa an unexpected kick. This one will definitely keep you warm and toasty even during the most frigid winter night.

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • •

1 ½ oz Suerte tequila 4 oz hot chocolate Dash of cinnamon Dash of cayenne Whipped cream Cinnamon stick for garnish Chocolate sauce for drizzle on top

DIRECTIONS In a mug add an ounce and a half of tequila. Add a dash of cinnamon and a dash of cayenne. If you’re making this for a lot of people you can put these spices right into your hot cocoa mix. Fill the mug with hot chocolate. No hot chocolate is complete without whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate sauce. Add a hot pepper as garnish, so guests know this hot cocoa has some spice. Use a cinnamon stick as a garnish, and it can be used as a stir stick when guests consume the cocktail.

CRAFTING CULINARY ART

Our guide on creating the perfect charcuterie board

ARTICLE BY THE CREATIVE AGENCY

18

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

Have you ever wanted to recreate those beautiful boards that are taking the world by storm? This trending appetizer isn’t going anywhere, which is why we want to teach you how to create your own gorgeous board for superior hosting. Tackling the feat of preparing a large charcuterie board for a family gathering or party this holiday season can feel intimidating. Refer to our helpful guide for inspiration and best practices when it comes to creating your board for holiday hosting. To start, you’ll need an appropriately sized board for the amount of people you’ll be serving. The rule of thumb is five ounces of meat and cheese per guest for a board intended as the main dish. Use two ounces of meat and cheese per person for boards used as an appetizer.

Charcuterie boards tend to look their best when items are stacked and piled making the board look full and abundant, so try to choose a board big enough for the amount of people you’re feeding but small enough for it to look filled out. Wooden or stone boards are classic bases, but the shape and design are where your creativity can really run. Holiday designs like a wreath or tree are easy and fun ways to incorporate the season. When picking items for your board consider the textures, flavors, and color of each ingredient. By using multiple textures in cheeses, meats, crackers and bread, fruits, nuts, etc. you’re creating an interesting range in the palate. The 3-3-3-3 rule, which suggests using three types of meats, three types of cheeses, three types of crackers or bread, and three types of additional items like fruits, nuts, and spreads, is a way to balance the board and the flavor profiles. With the multiple textures, you can present each item individually making each ingredient stand out. Slicing, chunking — which is breaking up a block of cheese roughly

— and using spreadable cheese will help to create that individual look. Including a range of flavors allows for each flavor to feel fresh when grazing on the board throughout the party or gathering. Pops of color from fruits and garnishes make the board more interesting and often help to lighten the heaviness of the cheeses, meats, and crackers—adding pops of red, green, gold, and silver helps to highlight the seasonal tones. Crafting charcuterie boards is an art form. Like any artistic venture, there are methods to the process that help make a stunning end product possible. When building the board, place the largest items first, like items in a dish and cheese wedges. Similar items should be placed away from each other on the board to create symmetry. Smaller items can then go in to fill spaces and be stacked to give a lavish finished look. Including garnishes like fresh herbs and greenery is another way to add filler while contributing to your design. And that’s it! Now go wow your guests this holiday season! D ECEMB ER 2 0 2 3

Charting Your Inner Landscape with Comeback Story Counseling

A journey to reconnect, rediscover joy, and redefine success for Northern Colorado's high achievers ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE CREATIVE AGENCY

22

M EN TA L WE LLBE IN G | W E LLNE S S

In the tapestry of Northern Colorado’s bustling life, there’s a haven for the industrious souls where Mike Ensley, the owner of Comeback Story Counseling, extends his expertise. Mike isn’t just a counselor; he’s a cartographer of the human condition, charting the unseen territories of the psyche for those who are more accustomed to leading than being led. The clientele Mike attracts are the ones whose hands are usually at the helm—business owners, innovators, and dedicated family men. They arrive at his doorstep, often carrying the weight of their worlds, a weight compounded by the pressure to succeed and the puzzlement that follows when happiness doesn’t automatically flow from their triumphs. It’s a familiar narrative: the quest for success leading to an estrangement from one’s inner peace and joy. Mike sees it clearly—the obligatory self-neglect that success often demands. These high achievers are adept at masking their vulnerabilities, pushing themselves with the false belief that their reserves of strength and resilience are inexhaustible. But beneath the veneer of invincibility, their humanity whispers of needs and desires that have been muted. The office of Comeback Story Counseling, filled with the soft light of understanding, often echoes with the initial confessions of guilt. Clients who are unaccustomed to allocating time to introspection find themselves

grappling with the feeling that attending therapy is an indulgent act, a luxury that their industrious minds should eschew. But the deeper truth is that they are there because a part of them recognizes that success without self-connection is hollow. Mike’s approach is unconventional yet profoundly simple: therapy is an investment in the self. It’s about being present in one’s life, truly enjoying the successes, and being authentic even when the week looks less like a well-orchestrated symphony and more like a chaotic cacophony. He encourages a playful engagement with life, an embrace of “recreation” in its most literal sense—to create again, to connect with the joy and creativity that once fueled their ambitions. He advocates for intentionality in relationships—seeking out those who energize, who accept, and who ground. And in those connections, finding a reciprocal strength. For Mike, recognizing that we each have a finite amount of time and energy is not a concession but a strategic move to enhance the quality of our interactions and our life’s output. Comeback Story Counseling is more than a therapy practice; it’s a reminder that the tapestry of life, with its myriad choices, is rich with intangible joys. And when one learns to feel—to be truly present—the full spectrum of life’s beauty becomes undeniable. Mike Ensley’s message is clear: in the relentless pursuit of success, don’t forget the art of being human.

DESIGN YOUR DINNER TABLE

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE CREATIVE AGENCY

Crafting an enchanting tablescape

24

PA RT Y P LA N N IN G | HOME + DE S I GN

When it comes to hosting a memorable gathering, few things are as visually striking as an elegant tablescape. A well-curated table can transform an ordinary dining experience into a magical and memorable dinner with your loved ones. Whether you're hosting a dinner party, a special celebration, or simply want to add a touch of sophistication to your everyday meals, creating a tablescape that wows your guests is easier than you might think.

ACQUIRING THE ESSENTIALS Before we dive into the specifics of setting up your tablescape, it's essential to acquire the necessary items to create an elegant and cohesive look. Here are some best practices for acquiring the essentials: • Choose a Theme: Begin by selecting a theme or color scheme for your tablescape. This will guide your choices

when acquiring items. Classic themes like rustic, modern, vintage, or seasonal (e.g., autumnal or holiday-themed) are popular choices. • Tableware: Invest in quality tableware that suits your theme. This includes elegant dinnerware, glassware, and cutlery. Consider mixing and matching patterns or using a cohesive set, depending on your chosen style. CONTINUED > D ECEMB ER 2 0 2 3

25

26

PA RT Y P LA N N IN G | HOME + DE S I GN

• Linens: Select table linens that complement your theme and color scheme. Tablecloths, table runners, and cloth napkins can add texture and sophistication to your tablescape. • Candles: Acquire candles of various shapes and sizes to create depth and ambiance. Taper candles, pillar candles, and votives in neutral or theme-appropriate colors work wonders. • Greenery: Fresh or faux greenery can breathe life into your tablescape. You can use garlands, potted plants, or individual leaves and branches to add a natural touch. • Decorative Accents: Consider incorporating decorative elements like chargers, placemats, and napkin rings that fit your theme. These small details can make a big difference.

SETTING UP THE CENTERPIECE Now that you have your essentials, let's move on to the centerpiece — the heart of your tablescape. Follow these steps to create a captivating focal point: • Start with a Base: Begin by placing a table runner or a tablecloth down the center of your table. The color and texture should complement your theme. • Layering: Create depth and interest by layering items. Start with a base layer of greenery or garlands along the center of the table. This serves as a lush foundation.

• Candlescape: Arrange your candles strategically along the table. Mix tall taper candles with shorter pillar candles and votives. Place them in candleholders of varying heights to add dimension. • Incorporate Decor: Scatter decorative elements like small figurines, seasonal ornaments, or thematic accents among the greenery and candles. • Tableware Placement: Set your tableware on top of the runner, arranging each setting meticulously. Fold or drape cloth napkins elegantly and position them beside the plates. • Final Flourish: To complete the look, add a few more sprigs of greenery or delicate flowers around the table and among the place settings. These finishing touches will tie everything together. Candles of multiple shapes and sizes are the stars of your tablescape. Their warm, flickering glow creates a cozy and intimate atmosphere that's perfect for any occasion. The varying heights and shapes add visual interest, making your centerpiece dynamic and captivating. Greenery, whether fresh or faux, adds a touch of nature's beauty to your tablescape. It softens the look and provides a delightful contrast to the candles. The lush greenery also works wonders in connecting different elements and creating a cohesive overall design. By carefully acquiring the right items and following our step-bystep guide to setting up a captivating centerpiece, you can transform your dining table into a work of art.

Giving Campaign

“

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” NAME ADVERTISER

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”

‘Tis the season to give back! The Candlelight Dinner Theatre is the premier dinner theatre in Northern Colorado. Offering Broadway-worthy productions six nights and two matinees a week, there is ample opportunity to see live theatre this holiday season. If magnificent performances, state-of-the-art sets, sound and incredible ambiance aren’t enough, The Candlelight sets itself apart by giving back to local charities. The Candlelight’s director of sales and marketing, Jalyn Webb, tells us about the charities that they donate to and how they use the holiday season to make their contributions go even further. One organization that they feel strongly about supporting is Realities for Children. Webb has personally been involved with Realities For Children for many years, belting out the National Anthem at the Realities Ride every year, the world’s largest ride. With all proceeds going to supporting children in our community, Webb uses her voice, both literally and figuratively to help the charity. Webb knew she wanted to incorporate Realities into the giving programs at The Candlelight. “When I came on board full-time at the Candlelight, I wanted to find a way to create even more of a support to them at the holidays,” Webb says. Realities For Children ensures that no child is forgotten, looking out for abused, neglected, and at-risk children in Larimer County. Providing both ongoing

For the past two seasons, The Candlelight has raised money for the organization by having a campaign during the holiday show. This campaign sells a personalized candle and has raised over $20,000 for the organization. These candles have come to represent the spirit of giving to and supporting a cause and helping those most vulnerable. This year is no different, during their run of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat there will be special candles with proceeds of course going to Realities For Children. Another organization The Candlelight feels strongly about is one that directly supports the thespian community in their times of financial need due to injury or illness. The theatre is committed to supporting The Denver Actors Fund which is very close to the hearts of everyone at Candlelight. Kent Sugg, a Candlelight legend, with more than 36 roles on stage, and directing credits, used the fund when he got the devastating diagnosis of Stage 3 NonHodgkin's Lymphoma in late 2018. Despite the diagnosis, he couldn’t be kept from his love of performing, “Fortunately it was a slow-growing form of lymphoma that couldn’t prevent me from continuing to perform regularly at Candlelight,” Sugg said of his illness. With financial help from the Denver Actors Fund, Sugg started the battle for his life and spent his precious time when he could at the place he loved so much, the Candlelight stage, without added financial stress. Sadly, Sugg passed away on June 10th, 2023. All who knew him drew comfort from the fact that financial stress from his illness wasn’t hindering his fight, thanks to the fund.

“When I came on board full-time at the Candlelight, I wanted to find a way to create even more of a support to them at the holidays” - Jalyn Webb In addition to Sugg, many of the actors from Candlelight have used the Denver Actors Fund for financial and practical volunteer assistance. Because of the personal connection and proximity to those she works with, Webb has organized a way to raise money and contribute to the fund that has helped so many in the theatre community. After one show per season, there is a donation box for Candlelight patrons to contribute. More than $50,000 has been donated to the fund because of the generous nature of the Candlelight patrons. Look out for the box after “The Secret Garden” this spring. In the future, Candlelight will continue to support both of these programs and encourage their patrons to

do the same. The spirit of giving is alive and well, especially during the holidays thanks to Webb, who has used her platform to give back. Benefitting not only the talented actors but also those who are the most vulnerable, both Denver Actors Fund and Realities For Children are doing incredible things with the help of donations from Candlelight and the generosity of their patrons.
