As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sport routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community—kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder are refreshing. In this issue, we are highlighting kids who are making a difference in our community. We also wanted to share a few of our go-to spots to enjoy with kids and fur-kids. As summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to take some time to relax and spend time with the ones you love.

Get To Know THROUGH THE ART OF NURTURE, PATIENCE, AND LETTING GO, WE CAN RAISE BOTH OUR PASSIONS AND OUR CHILDREN 10
I NSP IR E D BY | FITNESS
We asked Cari Frink, owner of SPENGA Loveland, a few questions to help her reflect on the process of running a business with children and share with us some wisdom she has learned. For mothers, mothers-to-be, seasoned mothers, and skeptical ladies, it's essential to know that we are not alone in the journey that is motherhood—and anything is possible with a little support and unconditional love for ourselves.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAY-TO-DAY LOOK LIKE WHILE RUNNING A BUSINESS AND BEING A MOTHER? My day-to-day schedule is pretty packed! Most mornings start with a couple hours of work at the studio while the kids hang out at home with my husband while he works from home, getting chores done, practicing baseball, and doing lunch. Once I finish up things in the studio, I head home and spend a few hours with the kids either at the pool, or whatever other summer activities are on the schedule. After that, they all do quiet time, naps, and backyard play while I get in a few more hours of admin work for SPENGA. We typically wrap up our days with family dinner and a walk, bike ride, or baseball practice. Family is always high on our priority list, so we squeeze time in together wherever we can. HOW HAVE YOUR CHILDREN ENRICHED YOUR WORK LIFE OR BUSINESS? Our kids LOVE SPENGA. They love the health aspect of it and moving your body, they love learning about business (which Jason and I really enjoy teaching about every time the opportunity presents itself), and it gives us a chance to teach them about taking pride in their work and working hard for something you want and believe in. They always want to hear how work went and if we have any new members. Our girls want to be instructors one day.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT BEING A MOTHER AND BUSINESS OWNER AT THE SAME TIME? I've learned a lot about time management and prioritizing things as a mom and a business owner. No matter what is piled on the plate, there are still only 24 hours in a day. Children don't keep, so I don't want to miss out on these young years, but also a business doesn't build itself, so it is essential that I put a lot of time in with both of those roles. I love that our kids get to see that they can build a family and a business at the same time. I get to teach them life lessons daily about family, business, hard work, and never giving up on their dreams as I live out two of my dreams being a great mom and business owner.

Foundations Church has served the Loveland area for more than a decade. Their heart lies with the youngest among them – Foundations Kids. “This church was founded on a simple principle – Foundations was and always will be a place for people. You matter to God and you matter to us. That’s what we want all people – young and old – to know when they walk through the door,” Mike Ruest, Communications Pastor explains. The initial plan for Foundations Church was started by a prayer group of families and individuals who wanted to create a church in Northern Colorado that didn’t exist. In the beginning, the founding group didn’t have the grand vision of what Foundations has become, but they knew that together, they could create anything. And they did – they created a place that many now consider their church home. Foundations Church held its initial service on 11/11/11 at Bill Reed Middle School. The founding members thought that maybe 50 people would join for no more than a simple Bible study. Instead, the school’s auditorium was packed with nearly 1,000 people. That was just the beginning and as they say, the rest is history. The church has grown significantly over the years in both membership numbers, staff, and facilities, but one thing has always remained the same – its commitment to the congregation and community. They’ve never once wavered from this core value. “We have a reputation for helping people because that’s what we’re about. We don’t just say we’re going to do something, we do it,” Pastor Mike says. The church has two locations – Loveland and Windsor – and serves thousands of people both inside and outside of the church every single day. When they see a need, they work together as a church family to fill it. In the last two years, Foundations Church has given more than $800,000 to individuals and families in Northern
Colorado to help with housing, food, medical bills, childcare expenses, and more. They have given an additional $614,000 to local and global nonprofits working to ease the effects of COVID. This past December, they raised over $150,000 to help relocate Afghan families. One family was relocated right here in Loveland. It’s more than just money, however. In the aftermath of the Cameron Peak fire, the congregation filled over 50,000 bags of sand to reduce the risk of flash floods in the burn scars, they sewed surgical caps for medical providers who ran out of supplies during the height of the pandemic and donated meals to first responders. If all of that wasn't enough, Foundations Church also recently launched an initiative late last year to help open a new faith-based recovery program to begin to address the staggering addiction crisis facing Northern Colorado. They’ve raised almost $300,000 to date to fund this project and have purchased land for the program. The facility will be known as The Addiction Recovery Collective (ARC for short). It will offer recovery programs, skilled trade apprenticeships, and counseling to help people recover and improve their station in life. ARC is still in the initial phases, but they aim to begin serving those in need soon. “We know people are hurting and we want to come alongside them,” Pastor Mike adds. “We have some of the highest suicide and addiction rates in the country and we can’t just sit back and let it continue. We see a need and we’re working as fast as possible to fill it.” Foundations Church is especially focused on the children in and outside of the church. “Our children are the church,” Early Childhood Director Stephanie Ferrell says. “They’re the church, not just because they’re the future, but because they are the ones that make this place what it is. They make it special.” CONTINUED >

“Our children are the church. They’re the church, not just because they’re the future, but because they are the ones that make this place what it is.” - Stephanie Ferrell, Early Childhood Director “We want to build connections and relationships,” she adds. “Jesus taught us that we connect through his love and we want to show kids love. We want to show them Jesus.” The Foundations Kids ministry is supported by several staff members, including a team of 75 volunteers who mentor and minister to kids every weekend. The team also hosts many activities for kids throughout the school year; especially during the summertime, to give children a safe, happy place to learn about their faith and have fun. They host camps, parents-nights-outs, and many family events for members and non-members alike. During the holidays, Foundations Kids works alongside the congregation for their Adopt a Family Program to ensure that kids in need have something special for Christmas morning. During this festival, we provide

Cooper Logan, aka DJ Lil’ Coop, is kind of a big deal. Like many kids his age, he’s into sports, enjoys playing his XBox, and chills out with his favorite tunes. However, at only 13 years old, this humble and easy-going kid has taken his love of music to the next level as an up-and-coming disc jockey with a robust schedule of bookings. From his first gig with iheart radio to races, fundraisers, weddings, and school events, DJ Lil’ Coop brings music to your ears and inspiration to many people’s hearts. At the early age of 3, Cooper was hospitalized after suddenly becoming very sick with Kawasaki Disease. CONTINUED >

The pediatric illness of unknown cause has a 10-day treatment window which in Cooper’s case was missed by 2.5 days. As a result of the late diagnosis, Cooper suffered a significant coronary aneurysm. He now lives with an aneurysm as well as stage 4 kidney failure. He has undergone an abundance of medical treatment in his young life and will need more in the future. Yet his daily medical challenges are not the focus of his time, energy, and spirit. Instead, this smiling and big-hearted teen is living his dream of entertaining others via his love of music. He has elevated his game from being a rookie DJ with the most basic skills and equipment to becoming a polished and professional entertainer who continues to master his craft. His favorite booking so far was working the MLB All-Star Game Fanfest in Denver, although he admits he does love entertaining his peers at school events and proms. He loves to deliver happiness to people at their important events. “Cooper is an inspiration to so many people. He has a heart of gold and cares more about others than he does himself,” comments his dad and manager, Shawn. Cooper has developed his skills under the wings of some well-known names in the industry. Denver-based DJ Walt White has been an asset to Cooper as a supporter and mentor. Cooper has also been positively influenced by working alongside DJ Zimbo of Colorado State University Athletics at CSU sporting events. Cooper is a huge sports fan so when you see him behind the board he will undoubtedly be donning one of the many athletic jerseys he loves to wear. He is also an advocate for Kawasaki Kids Foundation (kawasakikidsfoundation.org), the non-profit organization founded by his parents following his diagnosis which focuses on finding a cure for the disease. Cooper takes one day at a time, does what he loves, and serves others. What a simple yet wise life strategy that we might all seek to employ: just chill. DJ Lil’ Coop djlilcoop.com

How long have you been in the Northern Colorado area? My parents moved to Loveland, from Ohio, when I was 2 years old.
What brought you to the financial industry? My grandfather and father were both in the financial industry. My father, Chuck Layman, just celebrated 46 years in the business. I guess you could say it’s in my blood.
What do you think Layman Lewis Financial Group does better than anyone else? WE LISTEN! We take pride in listening to the goals and aspirations of our clients as they walk into retirement and take it as a personal challenge to help them reach those goals! We love to provide a WOW experience when it comes to retirement planning. A great day is when our clients thank us and say, “We’ve never understood our retirement plan until now!” Retirement shouldn’t be scary, and we love to partner with people to help them have the retirement of their hopes and dreams.
Tell us a story from your childhood. When I was eight years old, I needed money for something (Probably very important, I’m sure.) and was encouraged to figure out a way to make money. I saved money to buy a candy machine. You know, one of those machines where you can get M&Ms and nuts. I placed that machine at a local “watering hole” called Miller’s Crossing. Every week I’d go back to refill my machine and for nearly four weeks, someone had broken into my machine. All my candy and nuts gone with nothing to show for it. So, I took it upon myself to meet with the bartender and asked if I could share my story. With his permission, I wrote a note on a piece of paper sharing my story to the patrons of that establishment and included my picture too! I mean, how can you steal from a smiling 8-year-old? I posted my note right by the candy machine. No one ever broke into my machine after that. And I learned a valuable lesson, it’s good to share your dreams with others. You never know who might be a great resource, or simply a protector and encourager of your dreams! Meet our entire team of professionals who can help manage your retirement plan.
