Summer was such a magical time back in childhood - somehow, the long months off from school seemed packed with possibility. I remember the long hot days spent on the farm, at the lake, and at the Larimer County Fair. My days consisted of riding in a tractor or on my bike, caring for my animals and finishing up fair projects, waterskiing and campfires, and being completely unplugged from technology. Oh, do I miss these days. The days when the only technology distraction was the phone cord stretching across the room as my mom would lift it high in the air and we would limbo underneath. As I planned this summer issue, I couldn't help but think of how plugged in we are as a society and how much we are missing out on the times we all cherished as children. So in an attempt to recreate that nostalgic summer in all of us, I went on a hunt to find the stories that bring back all the feels! This month, we highlight so many great things about summer. The Larimer County Fair and Rodeo is a staple of summer in Northern Colorado and near and dear to my heart as my grandfather – Donald L. McMillen – is credited with revitalizing the fair and rodeo in 1947. We have two great stories for you related to the fair, one on the 4-H program and the other on our 2022 Larimer County Fair & PRCA Rodeo queen, both of which are chock full of ways our youth can unplug and enjoy the present moment. We also bring you a great opportunity to find freedom in being fully present while still capturing your moments and adventures. Photo Conscious, a local Loveland business, is changing the game in photography. Read on to learn more about ways in which you can unplug this summer while still capturing that perfect moment. Loveland City Council Approves Grant For Grace Gardens Loveland City Council approved a $250,000 grant from the Community Development Housing Fund to complete construction on The Grace Gardens subdivision in Loveland’s Derby Hill neighborhood. This affordable housing subdivision of 167 housing units is a collaboration between the city of Loveland Housing Authority and Loveland Habitat for Humanity and will be built on land donated by nearby Grace Community Church.

Cherry Pie Festival Is Returning To Loveland During the 1920s, Loveland boasted the largest cherry orchard to the west of the Mississippi River and was famous for producing over $1 Million in cherries every year. The Loveland Museum will continue to commemorate Loveland’s longstanding connection with the cherry industry with the annual Cherry Pie Celebration. Returning on Saturday, July 16, at 5 p.m., this event is free and will take place in Peters Park and the parking lot next to the Museum.

“I wanted to be a rodeo queen since I was a little girl. For my eighth birthday party, the theme was rodeo queens. Lainey Parker, queen at the time, came for a surprise visit. That was it for me. From that day, I knew I wanted to be a queen myself, and here I am,” Morgan Crouse said. Morgan grew up riding her horses at their boarding facility. She spent all of her free time crafting her skills and taking care of her animals. “This has always been my escape. I leave my phone in the truck and get one-on-one time with my animal. If I’m having a bad day, I go to the barn. If something amazing happens, I want to go to the barn to celebrate. I can be me here,” she said. Unfortunately, just two months before her queen competition, her long-time four-legged partner, Jack, died. Morgan was still committed to her dreams and switched to Smart Lil Chilli Pepper. “Pepper is a 17-year-old American Quarter Horse. He was a ranch horse and definitely wasn’t used to the rodeo industry, but he’s done so well. We really do make the best team,” she said.
Her dream finally came true. Morgan was named the 2022 Larimer County Fair & PRCA Rodeo Queen. She’s spent the year representing the fair and being an ambassador for the industry; her term will conclude at this year’s fair. Morgan has had a jampacked year of some of the best experiences of her life and she’s never been more grateful for an opportunity than this one. “I grew up in a neighborhood. I didn’t have the privilege of growing up on a farm, but I’ve always loved horses and I knew this was what I wanted to do. I have the most supportive, loving parents and they made this happen,” she said. “Through it all, I never gave up and it’s been nothing short of amazing.” “Being queen has made me more passionate about this industry and the community I live in. I’m so thankful to everyone who has supported me and for making this possible. I cannot wait for the fair!” CONTINUED >

01 // As queen, Morgan’s primary role is to represent the sport of rodeo and foster a love for Western heritage. She is the official face of the Larimer County Fair and her duties include attending fair parades, public speaking engagements, rodeos, and events throughout the state, concluding with her local fair and rodeo. 02 // The fair and the royalty is made possible through the generosity of their sponsors. As queen, Morgan attends many business events and makes official appearances throughout the community to thank and support the businesses who support the fair and the fair royalty. 03 // Morgan’s favorite part of her role as queen is inspiring a love of the Western lifestyle in young children. She attends many school events and community events to meet local youth and educate them about agriculture. “I recently attended an event with 1,300 fourth graders. I could just see the stars in their eyes. Their inspiration makes it all worth it,” she said. 04 // As the 2022 fair queen, Morgan will have a busy two weeks serving the community. She will attend the parade, carry flags and shag cattle in the rodeo performances, attend award ceremonies, and meet the public during the two-week event. She will also help facilitate the queen contest to determine the 2023 queen.

FREE TO BE Recall a memory that is etched so crystal clear in your mind that you will cherish it forever. A snapshot in time when all that you were aware of was that exact moment. The warmth of the breeze or the sound of your loved one's laughter, the depth of a connection or the crackling of the fire; the stillness, the joy, the beauty, a first, or a last. Maybe it felt like time stood still. In that instant, you were fully present and consciously connected, free from distraction or muddle. How else could you have captured the moment with such clarity and ease? What a pity to have missed the experience of being anything other than fully present and consciously connected to the here and now. Yet in an age that seems to hinge on technology and our will and skill to use it – opportunities at our fingertips, and the fear of missing out – we may be unconsciously absenting ourselves from meaningful and memorable moments. We may be missing out on the real connection to ourselves, our family and friends, and with those who we love and care about the most. Simply put, presence is a condition of being, an act of drawing near to the present moment. It’s the conscious elimination of
distraction, and the deliberate mind shift from being elsewhere to being here – free to experience the who and the what in the present time and space. The beauty is that when we find presence, we find freedom. It reveals itself along the seam where ‘now’ and ‘not now’ meet. How liberating to know that when we consciously let go of our mental and physical distractions, the technology, and the noise, we will make ourselves open and available to receive the abundance that the moment at hand offers. Being fully present is loaded with the freedom to relate, engage, influence, and grow. It's the awareness that our absence or distraction from this moment and the people in it cannot be rewritten once it has passed. Why waste a second more of our time missing out on what we value most, out of fear of missing out on what matters least. Let’s wholeheartedly embrace our freedom and commit to being present and authentically engaged with ourselves, our family, and our friends who matter most in the here and now. CONTINUED >

THE HEAD, HEART, HANDS, AND HEALTH OF OUR COUNTY
4-H is the largest youth development organization in the nation, shaping more than six million kids annually as they learn life, leadership, and service skills. 4-H was founded in 1902 as a club-based youth program where members have the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills and foster a relationship with agriculture. 4-H works to develop the leaders of tomorrow. In partnership with 100 public universities and a massive Cooperative Extension System, 4-H is available to children in urban, suburban, and rural communities. 4-H members work collaboratively to address some of our biggest issues through programming, clubs, camps, and community. 4-H is thriving in Larimer County with thousands of participants from all walks of life. The Larimer County Fair is the culmination of their year’s work with livestock shows, judged competitions, speaking engagements, and horsemanship contests. Loveland + South’s publisher, Kristi Dressler, has a long history of 4-H in her family. In fact, her grandfather – Donald L. McMillen – is credited with revitalizing the fair and rodeo in 1947 after it had been canceled due to the polio epidemic. Donald was an ardent supporter of the fair and especially children’s involvement. Throughout his life, Donald worked diligently to ensure the success of the children and the 4-H programming at the Larimer County Fair. To this day, 4-H is a major part of the fair with completed projects in livestock, creative arts, natural resources, and STEM.

Donald passed away in 1965 but his legacy lives on. "My dad believed that 4-H taught youth responsibility. His passion was to see them raise animals and create projects, compete fairly, and learn lifelong lessons." - Ginger Montgomery (McMillen), Donald's daughter, says. All 4-H projects are designed around the fact that kids learn best by doing. Each project is a hands-on approach to learning or improving current skills. To complete a project, kids will finish many components that include learning experiences, leadership development, an exhibition of work – often including a public speaking component – and reporting to reflect on the lessons learned. A recent study of 4-H conducted by Tufts University found that youth who participate in the program are significantly less likely to engage in risky behaviors. They are also more likely to give back to their communities and they have a more positive outlook than non-participating peers. During the Larimer County Fair, guests are invited to browse 4-H projects located in the Thomas M. McKee 4-H, Youth, and Community Building during open exhibit hours. The Larimer County Fair also has Open Class exhibits for those who completed projects but are not 4-H members. There are more than thirty active 4-H clubs located throughout Larimer County. Youth in the area are invited and encouraged to join a club and choose projects that interest them.

It gave them the skills and resources needed to lead in their own communities, run successful businesses, connect with others, and problem-solve. 4-H has successfully developed leaders that have held many positions around the county, including many past Larimer County elected officials. However, the organization recognizes a leadership skills gap in today’s youth and is actively working to provide more young adults with opportunities to develop the traits needed to become the leaders of the future. Open class categories tailored for youth are still available for 2022 registration and 4-H Fair participation. Youth can compete in vegetable critter art, flower arrangement or terrariums, baked goods like gingerbread, cookies, cupcakes, jams, jellies, canned fruit or vegetables, dried or pickled food, drawing, painting, collage, sculptures, sewing, recycled clothing, stuffed animals, doll clothes, needlework, embroidery, counted cross stitch, knitting, crochet, photography, creative crafts such as jewelry, ceramics, leather, wood, clay legos, and scrapbooking.
