Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating talented women in our community. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I'm thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out the greatness in them. In this month’s issue, we share stories of women who have made their mark in our community as talented individuals giving their time to help support others. We highlight Four Seasons Veterinary Specialists and their staff of women and men caring for pets day in and day out. We also recognize a centennial celebration in our community that has left me inspired knowing how many women were behind the success of the Rialto in downtown Loveland for the past 100+2 years. Last, but not least, we highlight three remarkable women in the 2022 Governor's Art Show. I encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to thank them. I thank all of you for reading and supporting Loveland + South Lifestyle each month. A LOOK AT THREE REMARKABLE WOMEN IN THE 2022 GOVERNOR’S ART SHOW ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY TYLER WESTON
The value of art is not something Coloradoans have historically struggled to understand. Vibrant communities span the entire state, supporting a diverse array of artists and building their work into their very identities. As a celebration of the talent and diversity that resides here, the Governor’s Art Show selects artists from all over the state to participate in the show each year. Hosted at the Loveland Museum, the show doubles as a fundraiser for Thompson Education Foundation, working to provide education consistency and support for students and families experiencing homelessness. For this month’s women’s issue we wanted to highlight three incredibly talented local artists participating in this year’s show. Jane DeDecker, Crystal Despain and Margueritte Meier's art will be on display in the Loveland Museum through May 22nd and opportunities to meet these and many of the other incredible artists can be found at governorsartshow.org

“‘I don’t know how I could not paint,’ Meier says of her lifelong pursuit.”
From an early high school graduation to working as a paramedic in Nicaragua, then teaching college courses before eventually earning her own degree, Margueritte Meier’s path has never been conventional. It was only when she realized she might not be able to dedicate herself fully to careers in medicine and art simultaneously that she decided to focus on just one, later managing to blend her passions for creative and healing arts. “I don’t know how I could not paint,” Meier says of her lifelong pursuit. She remembers being scolded for painting on walls and promptly having paper and paint set in front of her in order to spare the plaster. “It’s in my blood.”

Primarily working in water-color she blends media and techniques to create touchably real natural scenes, playing with light and color to create immersively detailed imagery. She describes her approach as ‘contemplative’ blending practices of mindfulness and meditation with creative techniques. Her art and preferred media has gone through its seasons of course, a return to watercolor is just the latest. “It’s just the phase I’m in, I just love it,” Meier says of her dynamic and shifting style over the years. Meier often paints Plein Air, having coordinated groups and taught classes in the discipline over the years. Currently she instructs contemplative art courses sharing the benefits she’s found in pursuing art in that fashion. When she’s not returning to her favorite natural places to work on a piece she’s working in her Fort Collins studio, surrounded by works in progress, she often finds herself switching from one to the next to avoid exhausting herself on a piece. “Right now I’m really focused on the earth and all of the elements that are on earth and need protection and stewardship,” Meier says of her recent collections, much of which has been inspired by the Poudre River. She hopes her work can inspire that connection with nature and encourage people to consider their relationship with the natural world. “Maybe we should be kinder and we can learn more about how to help nature together.”

Crystal Despain
Art has always been an important part of Crystal Despains’ life and was always in her career trajectory, whether playing the oboe through college or striving to capture authentic snapshots of life in oil paints. After having not painted regularly for some years, feeling the pressures of motherhood and beginning her family, it was becoming increasingly clear to Despain that art was missing from her life. Encouraged by her husband she decided to embark on a project called 52 Weeks of Free Art, which is precisely what it sounds like. Every week for a full year Despain would create and give away an original painting. People submitted requests and inspiration from all over the world and through this process of committing effort to creativity Despain was able to regain her artistic voice and settle questions of self confidence that had troubled her after taking those years away from painting regularly. “That was transformative for me,” Despain says of the project and how it helped her to rebuild her confidence and connect with people all over the world to find a deeper value in her work.
Now Despain has successfully found her way back into painting, and is open with her blog readers about how working towards her career goals while also raising 5 boys can be a struggle. Working from source materials she creates in photoshoots, or taking the opportunity to study life directly she dedicates her time in her Windsor studio space to practicing her craft, bringing beautiful moments from reality into a dreamworld filled with all of the right details beneath an ethereal filter, capturing the intangibles and connections that give them life. “When I’m painting figures, there’s a moment when you start seeing not just the shapes being correct, you start to feel a glimpse of that person,” Despain says of her process, “that’s the thing that I chase, I love that.” This will be Despain’s second year at the Governor's Art Show and she’s looking forward to seeing both familiar and new faces celebrating Colorado art together. While she’s already quite accomplished, Despain says she has a powerful drive to learn more and improve her technique which keeps her moving from one painting to the next. “I think that’s what art is, you’ve gotta love the journey more than the destination.” CONTINUED > MAY 2 0 2 2

Jane DeDecker
Jane DeDecker had initially thought she would be an art teacher, but through college and after an apprenticeship with a local sculptor it became evident that she was destined to create. Now, 35 years in, her extensive body of work includes nearly two-hundred sculptures in 35 states, revealing her passion for commemorating important times, movements, moments, and people in history. DeDecker works with her clients to design a sculpture that reveals the essence of her subjects and conveys not only their stories, but the sometimes complicated emotions that are involved in them. Working with clay warmed by the sun in her Loveland studio, she reveals remarkable likeness of historical figures from all walks of life, most recently focusing on some of history's most groundbreaking women, from suffragettes and millworkers to early doctors who sacrificed everything to do what they knew in their hearts was right. Every detail is considered, down to the authenticity of the textures, patterns and buttons in their clothes with news clippings, photos, small scale clay models and clothing samples for her subjects readily available. Her most recent passion project, spearheading an effort to create a women’s suffrage monument in Washington D.C., earned her a spot on USA Today's list of women of the year. The project recently reached an important milestone with the passing of a bipartisan bill to create the monument being signed into law. “It’s a big big project,” DeDecker says of the monument, “It’s gonna take a team.” While they are still some months away from beginning to build, she’s ready to collaborate with other artists to celebrate women on a national scale. “It’s so exciting to think about!”

In addition to her life-like public works DeDecker also creates stunning abstract pieces, often still centered on the human form but working to convey a feeling as opposed to representing a specific person or movement. She calls this process, “creative house cleaning,” a sort of emotional purge, allowing her to freely participate in potentially art’s most important function, self expression and exploring her own emotions. Keeping up with her family and community, DeDecker hopes her work can inspire people to find their voices and be heard. “Life is an expression and you have your unique voice.”

Medical emergencies are challenging and stressful for everyone, no matter how many legs you stand on. In times like this, you know you’re in good hands when you feel as cared for and supported as the actual patient - in this case, your dog or cat in need of medical care. That’s what it’s like for patients and clients at Four Seasons Veterinary Specialists located in Loveland, just east of I-25 near Crossroads Blvd. The 24-hour emergency services hospital provides a spectrum of first-class care specialties including internal medicine, surgery, dentistry, radiology, cardiology, and critical care. The 75-person, mostly female team includes 16 veterinary doctors (15 females and 1 male), veterinary technicians, and client care specialists. The group sets itself apart from other vet med entities by having two highly trained emergency room criticalist doctors available 24 hours a day. A criticalist is a board-certified veterinary specialist that is highly trained to treat life-threatening conditions in emergency and critical care. Founders Dr. Jennifer Lowry, DVM and Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Radiology, and Dr. Tara Britt, VMD, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgery, opened the hospital in 2014 on a shared mission to demonstrate what’s possible for high-quality patient and client care under an independently-owned model. The two joined forces when the company they were working with as independent contractors took on new ownership. The transition summoned them to answer their common call and desire to provide high-quality medical care in a highly enjoyable environment. “What if we could do a really great job for people and their pets through a high-caliber, high-touch model?” reflects Jennifer. The proposition resonated with Tara, and a partnership agreement between the two women soon followed. Eight years later, this female-led, people-focused, and gold-standard level emergency services hospital is raising the bar for advanced pet care in Colorado and beyond. As an independently owned and operated entity, the organization has more room for flexibility, personalization, and ingenuity than it may otherwise have under a corporate arrangement. That freedom is a game changer for the Four Seasons Veterinary Specialists leadership team who makes a personal touch their top priority. The team aspires to be part of a systemic change in veterinary medicine by leading the way towards a more people-centered management approach that builds support for caregivers so they are able to provide the best care possible. They are starting a trend towards more personalized care and hope that more vet med facilities will follow. What generates the outcome of excellence in care with a personal touch is two-fold: a consistent flow of best practices put into action, and a strong culture of balance, communication, and connection among team members, with clients, and for patients from the inside out. equipment like the 64 slice CT scanner and flat panel CT, to well-conceived sterilization processes, and extra provisions for a patient’s unique recovery needs, the entire hospital team delivers truly best practices in all areas of service. A seal of accreditation with the American Animal Hospital Association (AHAA) is an additional testimony to the hospital’s eye for excellence. The accreditation is not required by law, but is in keeping with their mission and vision of excellence in everything they do. Part of the excellence in service they provide is in the compassion with which they serve their patients and clients. For instance, the hospital has created a dedicated private space where patients can receive end-of-life care in a green grassy area, peacefully surrounded by trees and the breeze. That’s an excellent way to provide compassionate care. The team is continually developing their high standards of service through collaboration with other veterinary medicine groups like the Veterinary Specialty Practice Association (VSPA), an international association that provides support and dialogue on best practices and innovation. This is yet another example of how Four Seasons Veterinary Specialists takes advantage of every opportunity to connect and collaborate so they can achieve the highest standards possible in their field. The hospital takes a leadership role in building community by providing continuing education on advanced care options and practices to veterinary and animal professionals, clients,

and the public. The hospital recently hosted a virtual event on “Understanding Animal Behavior” with guest speaker, Dr. Temple Grandin, PhD. Equally important to the hospital’s success is the deeply entrenched culture of communication and collaboration. Jennifer and Tara, along with Hospital Director, Courtney Hubrecht, are passionate about employee wellness and satisfaction. They recognize the separateness and individuality of their team members as people with personal lives, outside interests, and responsibilities beyond their work life. It makes perfect sense how truly caring for team members and consciously creating a supportive and nourishing environment brings out the best in everyone. This high-touch culture directly contributes to the team’s ability to provide high-caliber care to their patients and clients. This positive internal culture draws doctors and team members from other parts of the country, and may explain the company's high level of employee retention. “It’s about creating an environment of balance; we want people to be here for the longterm,” says Jennifer. The doctors are salaried employees which eliminates the pressure of meeting external quotas that might negatively affect the quality of care they provide. This people-centered approach is so important to their mission and bottom line that they recently added Amanda Mahoney, a well-being focused therapist and coach, to their team as ‘Leader of Wellness and Culture’.
That’s just who these women are - innately attuned, nurturing, and highly-trained leaders who are raising the bar for excellence in care. It's notable to mention that not very long ago, the field of veterinary medicine was for the most part dominated by men. In fact it was the mid-80s before women were admitted to the field according to their merit. Tara and Jennifer celebrate the increased presence of women in veterinary medicine. They also attest to the positive outcomes that naturally result from working alongside other women. “A significant part of our success is our ability to communicate with each other so well; our congenial and nurturing styles allow us to be in sync and to understand what the other is thinking,” says Jennifer. Tara adds that being surrounded by compassion allows for high connection and collaboration that is key for best-practice decision-making. All three of the leaders shared that they were uniquely supported by their fathers, and that they are married to spouses who fully support their mission and drive. It’s easy to see the theme of support that is woven through the lives of these women, and which they now weave into every part of their business. The women share a mutual understanding about the real challenges that come with balancing work life and their desire to be attuned and present mothers to their children, and supportive partners to their spouses. The women consistently encourage each other to keep a healthy work-life balance. They agree that the ‘best-practice’ strategy for doing so is to remain flexible, communicate and stay connected to one another in their shared labor of love. The heart of the matter for Four Seasons Veterinary Specialists is undoubtedly the people-side of the pet care business. Their success is the result of intentional decision-making guided by the truly best-practices in the delivery of care, the leadership of their team, and in the achievement of personal work/life balance. The Rialto Celebrates 100+2 Years of Community in Loveland 32

Many know the Rialto Theater Center (RTC) as the beautifully restored venue located in the heart of downtown Loveland. Situated among picturesque boutiques, restaurants, and robust downtown life, the Rialto Theater is a pillar in the community. The 102-year history of the theater has been one of ups, downs, and a series of transformations. On May 26, 1920, the Rialto celebrated its grand opening in an effort to rival the modern showcase theaters in Denver. The theater was built by William C. Vorreiter, a local businessman and former president of the Bank of Loveland. Vorreiter commissioned the talented and ambitious Denver architect Robert K. Fuller to design this brand-new theater for Loveland. Loveland contractor A. Danielson was hired to construct it. The Rialto’s grand opening featured the western premier showing of Zane Grey’s Desert of Wheat and, as second billing, the comedy The Dew Drop Inn. Admission prices were inflated for this special night: 55 cents for adults, 25 cents for children, and a whopping 85 cents for a special reserved loge section. However, subsequent ticket prices better reflected the times, coming in at a modest 10 to 35 cents. Built primarily as a silent movie theater, the Rialto featured music from a theater orchestra or piano in the orchestra pit. In 1928, a Wurlitzer organ was installed, which not only provided music for the films but also created sound effects like automobile horns, horse hoofbeats, and train whistles, greatly enhancing the movie-going experience for the patrons. In addition to a movie theater, the Rialto provided Loveland with a seating area and stage large enough to host traveling vaudeville shows. The theater also functioned as a gathering place for town meetings, recitals, and graduations. To date, other than the marquee that was constructed and removed years later, not much has changed about the Rialto’s facade. The restoration prioritized a return to the theater’s
original 1920s aesthetic, whereas the marquee was not an original design element. As with anything that has lived for a century, the RTC has had a life filled with transformations, renovations, and restorations. Many of the theater’s early elements have been restored or uncovered, such as the front stained-glass window and the large murals painted on each side of the stage, two of which are complete originals. Loveland’s Downtown Development Authority purchased the building in 1987. Renovations began in 1989, mainly through the help of volunteers who labored for months to gut and uncover the building’s original details. In 1995, the city of Loveland provided for the final steps of the process by purchasing the theater for $500,000. This purchase allowed for renovations to be finished in time for the Rialto’s 75th anniversary. While it was important to preserve and restore the theater to its original beauty, there was also a need for additional space, which came about with the purchase and renovation of building to the west of the theater in 2012. This addition allowed for a large green room, lecture and meeting areas, and much needed backstage space. “Whenever we add anything, we want to maintain the historic structure of the theater,” Susan Ison, Loveland Cultural Services Director, explains. “The addition was a big deal because the use of the theater changed to accommodate more and more traveling performers.” The addition was necessary because there wasn’t enough green room space in the building. Before the addition, performers that wanted to utilize a green room would have to rent the buildings behind the Rialto and run up and down the alley between sets. “It was not ideal-- especially when it was snowing or raining,” Susan recalls. Loveland went through a recession that left downtown with many empty storefronts. Once the renovations were completed on the theater, other businesses and restaurants began to pop up nearby. While the RTC does a lot to honor and maintain the history of the venue, it has evolved

primarily into serving as a performing arts theater. Susan shared, “We get artists who play all over the world. They really like our theater because it’s an intimate size and the acoustics are incredible… The Rialto has really brought a sense of community to downtown Loveland again.” Today, the Rialto is alive with music, comedy, dance, film, and community events. It boasts 478 seats, ADA-accessible seating, state-of-the-art sound, video wall, and lighting equipment, and a strong volunteer corps. Steve Lemmon, the Rialto

Couple that with our highly competent staff, and you have a theater that provides a world-class experience for our patrons, performers, and rental partners.” The Rialto hosts nationally and internationally touring artists via two new concert series titled “Rialto Presents” and “Trailhead Sessions.” Local performing arts organizations and children’s theater
groups continue to call the theater their performance home. With the addition of the Rialto Theater Center, area businesses, nonprofit groups, the school district, and many others, use the flexible space for their meetings and lectures. In keeping with tradition, the Rialto shows children’s films in the summer and movies of all styles throughout the year. Lastly, Backstage Rialto is a non-profit partner tasked with fundraising and grant-writing while also playing a crucial advisory role for the theater and its staff.
