Sí, It’s The Mexico I Love! SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE

I was a bit skeptical about visiting San Miguel de Allende, the colonial city heralded as the “Heart of Mexico” and named a preferred tourism site by esteemed publications. I feared that with roughly 10 percent of its population being from the U.S., Canada, and elsewhere, possibly the essential Mexican ambiance of this UNESCO World Heritage Site city would no longer exist. During my recent visit (December 2021), I was delighted to discover that San Miguel de Allende’s Mexican charm and essence is very much intact. On a sunny afternoon, after meandering the city’s enchanting cobblestone lanes, we relaxed on one of the many wrought iron benches in the Plaza Principal (main square) in front of the exquisitely ornate, pink sandstone neo-Gothic Parroquia de San Miguel Archangel. We smiled as a proud dad held his toddling youngster’s hand as he tried to chase one of the dozens of cooing pigeons. Vendors with enormous bunches of colorful balloons and ice cream carts with artisanal flavors (avocado, corn, Mexican vanilla) enticed us. CONTINUED >

Founded in 1542 by a Spanish missionary, San Miguel is a shining example of 16th century Spanish Colonial Baroque architecture, with such notable sites as the afore-mentioned Parroquia, and countless other elaborately designed buildings. Strolling down the narrow twisting lanes, we enjoyed endless discoveries - a rooftop flower pot with tumbling vines, cats peering from tiny windows, doorways draped in traditional archway decorations, and more. Galleries, boutiques, and bistros beckoned to us everywhere. Perfectly situated just ten minutes from the main square, and steps from Parque Juarez, the expansive city park, we stayed at the Rosewood San Miguel de Allende. This elegant 67-room (each with private terrace or balcony) property belies its 2011 founding, appearing as a majestic, historic hacienda, down to the last detail. Three hours from Mexico City’s Airport, or one hour from Queretaro’s Airport, the Rosewood’s vistas of the surrounding mountains, multicolored homes, and towering church spires below are

especially impressive from its very popular Luna Rooftop Bar. The Rosewood’s restaurant and tequila bar, 1826, offers a sumptuous dining room as well as a beautiful garden atrium. Here, Alejandro, our waiter, not only remembered my breakfast order but brought me an entire bottle of freshsqueezed orange juice, sided by the best almond croissant I can recall since Paris. Mexico is so much more than its glorious beach towns. Perhaps your next trip could be to the interior “heart of Mexico.” Within San Miguel, or a short distance beyond, you will find the enchanting small city of Guanajuato, hot springs, vineyards, archaeological sites, golf courses, spas, hot air balloon rides, horseback riding, and a heady mix of museums. Ron and Michelle Yovich, Loveland residents and owners of the original Mountain Cowboy Brewing Company in Frederick, Colorado, have a knack for taking the simple and turning it into something more bountiful and robust. In the case of Mountain Cowboy, Michelle and Ron’s creativity, ingenuity, and combined passion for community-building have turned a simple brewing company into a space known for ease, good libations, and real connection. “What started out as a craft brewery has turned into a whole lot more,” says Ron. Mountain Cowboy is doubling down on its allure by opening a second location in the heart of Centerra’s newest neighborhood, Kinston Commons. The coffee roastery/craft beer brewery/specialty bakery is a part of the Kinston Hub, a central meeting point for all things fellowship and neighborly communion in the up-and-coming community. At Mountain Cowboy, friendly and knowledgeable staff serve up affability like it’s the daily special. Creating that kind of welcome and sense of community is what drew Ron and Michelle to the business, and that’s what draws patrons through the door. That, and their freshly roasted coffee, “made-by-Michelle” delectable treats, and oneof-a-kind craft brews like the Kinston Kolsch, which is headed to Kinston this spring and will only be available at McWhinney’s newest Centerra residential community in east Loveland. The name ‘Mountain Cowboy’ reflects Ron and Michelle’s shared values of hard work, environmental responsibility, and regard for the organic process. The native Wyomingites turned Coloradoans, who have known each other since junior high school, started their Colorado life together after graduating from the University of Wyoming. Ron’s training and experience as a chemical engineer combined with Michelle’s love of learning and abundant creativity draw them toward projects dripping with possibility. Take for instance the 15-acre hops farm outside of Longmont that they developed and nurtured, eventually selling the harvest to AC Golden (Coors) for their Colorado Native product line, and to other smaller local breweries. Whatever the adventure du jour, the Mountain Cowboy owners aren’t dissuaded by putting in a little sweat equity to fulfill their immediate vision and larger community-building mission. It isn’t one thing that makes Mountain Cowboy all the buzz, it’s all the different parts melded together. It’s the cumulative effect of good people, coffee, brews, and homemade fare commingling in a space fit to gather, have fun, and linger for a while. In a nutshell, Mountain Cowboy is all about making community connections. The Frederick location has drawn a wide range of patrons from seniors to twenty-somethings and everything in between. The soon-to-open Centerra -Loveland location will no doubt render the same. Mountain Cowboy seems to be as much a lifestyle as it is a business for Ron and Michelle. It’s a well-crafted combination of passion and creativity that has been patiently sown, grown, and harvested with a little ingenuity and a lot of hard work, and is topped with a deep appreciation for all the simple things that bring people together. They somehow know, innately, that food is the universal language that brings people together. And one of the best destinations in Spain to experience food, friends, and community, is a medium-sized fishing port on the Mediterranean coast, called Dénia.

Festivals are a big part of community life in Spain – and in Dénia, in particular. For festival lovers, there are few that can compare with Las Fallas in the Valencia region, where Dénia is located. Each year neighborhood groups all over the region raise money (usually by hosting foodie events) so they can compete by constructing spectacular statues all over town. Those giant statues are typically irreverent, scathing, or simply comical statements on “Las Fallas” (The Failures) of all aspects of society. There seems to be almost nothing off-limits for these amazing, often satirical, works of art. Once the judging is complete and the prizes awarded, the bonfires begin. Around midnight on the final day of the festival, the statues are put to the torch. With their location in small plazas and tucked into spaces beside businesses and apartments, the local fire department has a very long night making sure that everything and everyone stays safe. It’s a sight that you’ll never forget. If international opinion counts, then Dénia is certainly a place worth visiting. Just a few years ago this off-the-beaten-path town was awarded the prestigious title of UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. But maybe, like us, big titles aren’t enough to make you want to visit. It’s what we’ve experienced for ourselves that confirms what UNESCO discovered here. Dénia boasts an unusually large number of great, and affordable, restaurants. It’s not just about tapas and paella. The variety and quality of food is stunning – not to mention healthy. A story I love to tell of our adventures in Dénia paints a beautiful picture of how connected Spaniards are to their food. While we were enjoying a beautiful evening eating outdoors, we were entertained by a group of 3 young cousins. After being called inside to eat dinner, Patricio, all of 7 years old, came racing out of the restaurant. He screeched to a halt in front of our table (nearly knocking over our wine!), and with wide eyes and a huge grin excitedly shouted “Oh. My. GOODNESS! Have you tried the MEATBALLS? They’re the BEST I’ve ever had in my ENTIRE LIFE!”

Patricio and his two younger cousins became fixed in our hearts as the best small-town ambassadors one could ever imagine. They represent the strong ties between family, friends, and good food that permeate the atmosphere of this very special place.
