LIFESTYLE LETTER
Home Sweet Home Growing up on a northern Colorado farm, I learned a lot about the land. My parents would drop my brothers and me off on the edge of the cornfield, tell us to stay put, then hop in the tractor and head out to plow the field. We would play for hours just digging through the chunks of tilled-up land. I learned that the bigger chunks of dirt held the most worms, but were harder to throw at my brothers. I also learned how incredibly important this land is in nurturing our bodies, our communities, and our homes. For our annual Homes Issue, we’ve curated the perfect blend of nurturing our bodies, our community, and our homes. Inside these pages, we take you behind the scenes with Salty Soul Crew, a local Loveland family who is building community through their no-junk, sourdough bread. Everything in the bread comes from organic farms across the region. We also highlight how a development in Berthoud is honoring the land. Formerly a winter wheat field, the Harvest maintains its legacy through wheat signage and open space. The developer and builders, one of which being Sigg Brothers Homes, are local and their focus is on growing community. Last but not least, we focus on ways in which you can nurture your home through some spring cleaning tips. Suzette Gebhardt, a local interior organizing and design expert, is ready and waiting to show you ways in which you can freshen up your home. We hope you enjoy this month’s issue! Please help us by letting our partners know that you saw them in Loveland+South Lifestyle. Your feedback means the world to us!

REFRESH Your Space
FOR SPRING QUICK SPRING CLEANING AND ORGANIZING PROJECTS
ARTICLE BY SUZETTE GEBHARDT PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTA TIPPMANN PHOTOGRAPHY
The term “Spring Cleaning” gets a bad rap. It implies a whole lot of work when you’d rather be outside enjoying the first blissful days of spring. No one really enjoys getting down on their hands and knees and wiping down the baseboards, do they? Over the years I have found that the process of spring cleaning doesn’t have to be daunting. In fact, when broken into smaller, manageable projects it can actually be fun! The key is simple: start small. Pick one mini project that you can complete in an hour. Next week, tackle a two-hour job. As you work your way from space to space, you’ll gain momentum that will carry you forward. Before you know it your spring cleaning and organizing projects will be behind you. “But what can I do in one hour?” you might be wondering. So glad you asked! Here are a few of my favorite “quick win” projects that will help you refresh your home for spring in under an hour. The only thing better than the feeling of checking all those spring-cleaning tasks off your list is sitting back and enjoying the fruits of your labor—a clean, well-functioning home. I hope these project ideas help inspire you to find a new way to love your space this season. Enjoy spring! Suzette is an interior organizing and design consultant in Northern Colorado. For more organizing and interior design ideas, you can follow her on Instagram (@built4four) or her home blog at suzettegebhardt.com.

UPGRADE YOUR CLEANING CADDY
Choosing cleaning products that feel good to use can transform a necessary chore into a pleasurable experience. Consider treating yourself to an upgrade! To invigorate your spring-cleaning efforts, choose a small container you love and fill it with upgraded basics. My cleaning caddy includes essential oil, counter spray, and glass cleaner in refillable glass bottles (I like Grove collaborative concentrates), fresh microfiber cloths, and Magic Erasers.
CORRAL CHARGERS
Choose a compartmentalized storage container or a drawer divider insert and purchase a roll of double-sided velcro. Sort chargers by type, discarding, or donating chargers to outdated electronics. Then bundle the keepers and secure each one with about an inch of the velcro. When you use a charger, remove it from its new home and leave the velcro in its place so it’s ready and waiting when it’s time to put the charger back.
DEEP CLEAN YOUR BEDDING
Start by stripping all bedding, including bed skirts, and run them through a deep clean or sanitize cycle on your washing machine. Sprinkle baking soda on the mattress and let sit before vacuuming with a vacuum attachment. Wipe down head and footboards and vacuum under the bed before replacing bedding. Consider swapping out heavy winter bedding for a lightweight comforter or a fresh duvet cover. Crisp white throw pillows can also add a quick pick-me-up look! CONTINUED > MAR CH 2 0 2 2

CLEAN A BATHROOM DRAWER
Choose a drawer you use often (your top drawer is a great place to start). Empty everything onto the counter and toss trash and expired or used-up products. Relocate anything that belongs elsewhere. Vacuum out inside of the drawer with a vacuum attachment and wipe down drawer and organizer inserts. If you want to incorporate drawer organizer inserts, now is the time to measure and plan. Place remaining items back in place, cleaning off as necessary.

CLEAN UP WORKSPACE
Clear clutter off your desk or workstation by incorporating a wall-mounted storage system, like this board from IKEA, in your office space. Shelves and hooks help keep frequently used supplies visible and out of the way. Clips allow you to store important paperwork in an easily accessible way. I also love a unit like this by the back door to hold mail, school papers, and keys!
MAINTAIN YOUR KITCHEN APPLIANCES
Maintaining my kitchen appliances is something that tends to fall to the back burner. Spring cleaning is the perfect time to show those hardworking appliances, both big and small, some love. Fill the sink with hot soapy water and pull out your food processors, waffle makers, and crockpots. Wipe them down, scrubbing the crevices with a scrub brush or a magic eraser. Shine up the surface of stainless-steel appliances using a stainless-steel cleaner.

“I just want to provide a place where people can get good food, but also trust all the ingredients. We’re extremely conscious of where we get our products, who we partner with.”
“Bread is life. Bread has been important since ancient times. Bread is community. Bread is love.” - Brandon Schulfer, Owner and Founder of Salty Soul Crew Brandon and Monique Schulfer were born and raised in California, and it’s there that they met, fell in love, and had their children – Urijah (11) and Bentley (8). It’s also where they had roots and where they initially planned to live. However, life and God had different plans for the Schulfers. They felt called to move, get uncomfortable, and try something new. When a job opportunity for Brandon became available in Northern Colorado, they prayerfully took a leap of faith. In July 2018, The Schulfers made downtown Loveland their home. “It was anything but easy,” Brandon describes. “We knew it was the right move but it was a challenge. It wasn’t until we started our business that we really developed a community here.” Not long after moving, they felt called once again to start their home-based, family-run business – Salty Soul Crew – salt for the flavor it adds and the Biblical significance of the mineral. “We just felt called to give back. To bless our community with something so important like bread,” Monique says. Salty Soul Crew primarily focuses on bread, sold from their home; Monique also makes handcrafted earrings. They specialize in no-junk sourdough, using a wild yeast sourdough starter. This starter is a complex community of microbes working in symbiosis to produce an incredible tasting loaf of sourdough bread. The starter is used to make many other things including pizza dough, cookies, and more. They also sell their starter and teach classes.

“Our whole family had been gluten-free for years,” Monique details. “But we can eat sourdough, and so can many others. It’s fermented for long enough that your body can actually digest it without issue. It was a huge blessing for us to be able to have bread again, and we wanted to bless others as well.” What started out with a small whisper in their ears has turned into a beautiful thing. The entire Schulfer family takes part in the business and together, they serve many families. “It takes teamwork,” Brandom admits. “It’s a balance. We want to provide the best, freshest bread, but this is also the time to pour into our kids. We’re intentional with our time so we bake at 4 AM, it takes coordination but it’s worth it.” “I just want to provide a place where people can get good food, but also trust all the ingredients. We’re extremely conscious of where we get our products, who we partner with,” Brandon says. Salty Soul Crew has built those very kinds of relationships with growers around the region. “We only use products from small, organic farms. I want to be transparent – so you know exactly where your food comes from.” Their goal in the future is to create a brick-and-mortar storefront to deepen connections and serve more. For now, their home is the center of their life and business. They homeschool their two boys, focusing on classical education and life learning. They enjoy hosting guests, playing music, and tending the garden in their backyard. “Bread has always been our focus because of the blessing that it can bring to others,” Monique says.

SIGG BROTHERS’ SPECIALTY OF CUSTOM HOMES FITS WITH HARVEST’S MISSION OF A COMMUNITY-MINDED SUBDIVISION ARTICLE BY SHELLEY WIDHALM PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRYSTAL MOORE WITH
Just southwest of old town Berthoud, the Harvest encapsulates the small-town charm of community combined with the exhilaration of owning a custom home. The developer of the Harvest, Alex Hoime of Berthoud, worked with local builders and businesses to create a residential neighborhood deeply connected to the agricultural history of the land. It was once the 160-acre Johnson Farm recognized in 2002 as a Colorado Centennial Farms working farm in the same family for more than 100 years. Turned into a three-phase residential development, the Harvest stands out for its majestic mountain views, quarter-acre lots, lack of a metro district, and HOA with homeowner board representation. “Our entry signs will represent the winter wheat cultivated by farmers in years past. These signs have been created by Charlotte Zink, a local artist in town,” says Christine Torres, real estate agent with Remax Alliance. Christine represents the developer and has been working on this project for the past three years. Five local custom builders are building 31 homes in the mountain craftsman meets modern farmhouse styles and priced in the $850 to $950,000+ range for the first phase of the development. Two more phases are planned for the south, featuring a walking trail and pocket park connecting the phases. One of the builders is Doug Sigg, who will be creating custom-crafted homes on five lots. He is the owner of Sigg Brothers Homes and a Realtor with Paragon Realty Services. Sigg Brothers Homes was founded by Doug’s father and uncle. Doug has since taken over the company and Sigg Brothers Homes has been featured on HGTV several times. “The inventory is lacking in this price range. The Harvest is perfect because everyone wins,” says Vicki Sigg, in-house designer for Sigg Brothers and also Doug’s wife.

The Siggs’ clients are looking for options beyond the typical “cookie-cutter home” but lack the means to purchase the traditional million-dollar-plus custom-built home. Sigg Brothers, which also does remodels, comes in to meet that desire, drawing up customized architectural plans and providing in-house designs. Vicki Sigg walks clients through the steps, helping with all of their decisions from light fixtures and flooring, to trim and plumbing fixtures. She’s able to get quick results from contractors and subcontractors who have worked with Sigg Brothers during the company’s 30-plus years in business. “These solid, long-term relationships with our contractors and subcontractors give us an opportunity to advance and improve the typical building process,” Vicki says. “Unprecedented attention to detail and customer service is the foundation of our company.” The Harvest strives for more space between homes, and quality over quantity, by offering larger setbacks—instead of five feet, setbacks are 10 feet and 20 feet between each home. Buyers also appreciate the lack of a metro tax. “In metro tax residential projects, the board is considered a quasi-government and does not need to get a vote to increase the mill levy or add policies or regulations that the subdivision needs to adhere to,” explains Christine. Many new subdivisions add a metro tax to property taxes, increasing the mill levies and nearly doubling the typical tax amount of a similar home in a non-metro tax district. “A metro tax affects how residents vote in a school district. They won’t vote for school improvements if they already have high property taxes,” adds Christine. The Harvest is near many lifestyle amenities, including Berthoud’s old town business district, the Berthoud Recreation Center, and the TPC Colorado golf course and clubhouse. “It’s pretty incredible what’s happening in Berthoud right now and we are excited to be a part of it. We are invested in this community both professionally and personally. We have three kids who are very active in the community culture that Berthoud is known for,” says Vicki. For more information on Sigg Brothers Homes, contact Doug at 303-579-3674.
