Lovely Couples!

February 2022 PUBLISHER

Jessica Laguna | jessica.laguna@citylifestyle.com

February is the month of love. The month in which our community comes together to celebrate so many events in honor of LOVEland! From the streets lined with hearts to group weddings to love locking—our town is in love! And I am in love with this town! This month marks three years since I took a leap of faith and left my corporate role to begin Loveland + South Lifestyle. While the journey has been a long one, with many twists and turns, I wouldn't have it any other way. I love what I do and I feel blessed to be able to share the heartbeat of our community. My advertising partners stand behind this beautiful community and the good news being shared. I'm grateful for every single one of them. Over the years, and through the towns of Loveland + South, one thing I have taken note of is the number of small businesses that are owned and operated by couples. I am truly amazed by these individuals who spend an enormous amount of time together and yet they thrive because their love for one another is so strong. I can't help but share these beautiful stories with you in this special month of love. Just like a box of chocolates, I don't want to spoil the surprise here, so read on to learn more about five beautiful couples and the businesses that they run together. And if you stop by to meet them, which I suggest you do, please let them know we sent you! They are lovely! "Where there is love there is life." —Mahatma Gandhi Love,

Billie and Ron Colson

Independence Gallery 233 E. 4th St, Loveland IndependenceGallery.com | 970-669-0889

Billie and Ron Colson are each experienced business owners in their own right. They know what it takes to run a business, and the challenges of doing it all on your own. Billie, an artist and the owner of Independence Gallery in downtown Loveland, opened the co-op style gallery in 2007. Ron worked as a solopreneur running his own insurance business until his recent retirement. Although they’ve always had separate businesses, they are aware of each other’s strengths, and have helped the other out in their respective business as needed. The recent shift in Ron’s status has been an opportunity for Billie and Ron to join forces and work together at the gallery. Both agree the connection has been a helpful and positive arrangement. Ron is an artist in woodworking, so taking on the gallery’s framing service has been a great fit. The assurance that customers are in good hands for their framing needs has freed Billie to focus on her sweet spot—engaging with gallery artists and visitors. According to Ron, what makes the new set-up work so well is that they’ve agreed that Billie is the decision-maker for all things gallery, which provides clarity and eliminates confusion about who is taking the lead. Billie appreciates how Ron’s participation helps him see first hand all that is involved in running the gallery. Not only that, as Ron puts it, “You’ve got someone who will always be honest with you and who has your best interest at heart.” The couple is gearing up for their annual, “65 Roses for Cystic Fibrosis” event, February 1-29, in support of their granddaughter who was born with cystic fibrosis. They have raised over $140,000 to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Billie and Ron will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary this month Happy Anniversary! “It’s all about balance,” say Christy and Kyle Coberly, co-owners of The Tranquil Spa, a full service day spa where guests experience all manner of relaxation services including massage, facials, advanced skin care, manicures and pedicures, and other body treatments. The pair opened their venture in 2019 as a one room massage business that has flourished exponentially over the past three years. The growth has been fantastic, but the increased workload means a lot of long hours and late nights to keep things running smoothly. How do they do it? They divide and conquer. Having clear roles in the business helps them achieve the balance they need for a successful outcome. They really respect each other so while they may not see eye to eye 100% of the time, they trust the decisions the other makes in his or her area of expertise. Accountability is another important rule of engagement; they keep each other on track in

support of what’s best for them as a couple and for the business. Not to mention, even after eighteen years together, Christy and Kyle are still having fun. “Sometimes there are shenanigans in the office when I get the girls to gang up on Kyle!” says Christy. This example provides further evidence that balance - in this case between work and play - is key to successfully co-operating a business and nurturing a relationship. The duo has known each other since preschool. Their long history together has helped them to understand each other very well. “We’re both so driven, and we make a great team,” says Christy. But above all else, the #1 factor that makes it work is their mutual respect. They are intentional about self-care and about giving each other their separate space when they need it, while also carving out time together and as a family.

This is not an act. Brandon and Lauren Harrington, founders of Harrington Arts Alliance, a community based, non-profit theater company, have a genuine partnership from the inside out. The thespian couple shares a passion and purpose for bringing creative and personal development opportunities to people of all ages and backgrounds. The two are individuals, but their shared goals and aspirations pave the way for a thriving marriage and a robust business. Somewhere along their 26 year relationship history they started talking about a dream, and they brought it to fruition in Loveland. From the outset, Brandon and Lauren worked together on everything from setting up the business to preparing for and leading the shows. “A theater business can be a lot of high-stress work,” says Brandon, “but while the business is tricky, the relationship is not. We’re on the same page and have the same goals, drive, and dedication.” As the Harrington’s family has grown, Brandon and Lauren have revised their roles with Lauren

taking the lead behind the scenes and Brandon leading in the business. To them, it’s all part of their ‘together’, and because it’s all a family affair, one blends into the other. Even so, keeping family and business balanced is essential. “Lauren is so good at seeing the big picture, which helps us prioritize our family and our relationship,” Brandon says. They make it work through honest conversations, self-reflection, and not quitting when times are stressful. Brandon and Lauren are also thankful for the support they receive from the community, and from extended family living in the area. Brandon emphasized that what makes the most significant difference in their relationship and business working so well is patience. “Patience and understanding, and keeping the bigger picture in mind makes all the difference; and not to sound cheesy but - love.”

“We wanted to do something in our hometown. This place is wonderful – we’ve already seen that in just the few months that we’ve been open. This is a tight-knit place and everyone is so supportive.” Katie and Scott Hittelman were meant to be work and life partners. Their creative spirits and entrepreneurial desires align incredibly well. Their personalities complement each other and together, they have the skills to own and run two businesses side by side. Each of them has worked in various aspects of the wedding industry for years. Katie in event planning and catering, and Scott in lighting and design. Their paths had crossed many times over the years, but three years ago they began a friendship that has led them on this wildly successful journey together. Now married, the pair own Event Design by Scott + Katie – a full-service wedding design company. “Scott has been an entrepreneur for decades,” Katie says. “When the pandemic hit, I stopped working for the catering company I was at and took on an admin role at Scott’s company. We both like working for ourselves and we found we were a good team. We wanted to do more together, so we expanded his business to include more of my floral and planning skills.” After building their design company together, Katie and Scott were ready for a new challenge. In November 2021, the pair opened a brick-and-mortar floral and gift store in the heart of Berthoud – You + Me. It’s located on Third Street, just around the corner from the main street. “We wanted to do something in our hometown. This place is wonderful – we’ve already seen that in just the few months that we’ve been open. This is a tight-knit place and everyone is so supportive. We know how loyal everyone is and we’ve already built a great camaraderie with other businesses around us. It’s been really CONTINUED >

fun,” Katie details. Katie is the curator of the shop – finding the goods and ordering the flowers, Scott supports them with big picture details. You + Me specializes in traditional floral bouquets and arrangements, but they also have many unique, locally-curated gifts and goods. You can find jewelry, apparel, accessories, soap, bath bombs, and so much more. “We’re gearing up for Valentine’s Day,” Scott notes. “It’s our first one with the shop, but we’re ready.” They are running a holiday special where you get free chocolates with a pre-ordered Valentine’s bouquet. “We have so many flowers coming to the shop for the holiday, and we can’t wait to make everyone’s holiday special,” Katie adds. The shop also has a one-of-a-kind plant bar where guests can choose from different plants, hanging baskets, ceramic pots, mosses, and more to create foliage to keep long-term. This is a great date-night activity or timeless alternative to Valentine’s Day flowers. “Now that we’re all spending more time at home, people find that they enjoy having something alive and pretty in their space,” Katie says. They are excited about the future. “We just love Berthoud. It’s where we live, where our kids go to school. We want to be the go-to floral shop in the area,” Katie says. They envision continuing to balance work, life, and their relationship in the coming years. The family includes four children. Their teenage son is now their primary flower delivery driver and their baby is often in the shop. It’s a family-run business and something they love doing together. Shop small this Valentine’s Day! THE REAL DEAL IN EVERY BITE SCALZOTTO ITALIAN RESTAURANT SERVES AUTHENTIC CUISINE WITH LOVE

Tonia and Giancarlo Scalzotto are a match made in heaven. So is the match between their trattoria-style eatery, Scalzotto’s Italian Restaurant, and the Loveland community. The restaurant opened in November 2021, but the love story started more than 20 years ago over salsa. The couple met while out dancing in Denver. Giancarlo who is from Vicenza, a town in northern Italy, was vacationing in the US when a friend introduced him to Tonia, a native Coloradoan. Tonia says, “We were drawn together.” They traveled back and forth visiting each other for a while, but it wasn’t long before they tied the knot and started their life together in Italy. Together, they have a mind for business and food. In 2004, they aimed to introduce a new kind of cuisine to their Italian community and opened a fast-food Mexican restaurant that they eventually grew into a chain of 18 very successful restaurants. By 2013, their three children were getting older and they decided to return to Colorado to access opportunities that their kids couldn’t experience abroad. They wanted to stay in the restaurant industry and with Giancarlo’s roots, an Italian establishment was a no-brainer. Shortly after moving back to Colorado, they opened their first restaurant in Broomfield, and their new Loveland location is the second. The third and probably final spot, will open in Westminster this year. All locations serve authentic northern Italian cuisine and deliver a charming experience for families, date nights, and celebrations.

Many of the recipes come from Giancarlo’s mom — it’s a family affair. Tonia says the sweet and savory pear and prosciutto ravioli is not to be missed! So what’s love got to do with it? Everything. Tonia and Giancarlo share a common dream, yet they always support the other in fulfilling their personal ambitions. That supportive dynamic has proven key to their story. As Giancarlo tells Tonia, “I’d marry you a thousand times over again!”
