LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy New Year!

January 2022 PUBLISHER

Kristi Dressler | kristi.dressler@lifestylepubs.com PUBLICATION DIR ECTOR

Jessica Laguna | jessica.laguna@lifestylepubs.com

As I start to think about my 2022 hopes and goals, I find myself focusing most on my mindset. We all know the mind is the control center of our being, and undoubtedly a key component in all of the decisions and actions we make, yet it's the one area in our body that is most often overlooked. That being said, my main goal this New Year is my mental fitness so that everything else will follow suit. The most popular New Year’s resolutions center around becoming physically fit, and while I’m 100% on board with that, I see a new focus on mental healing and fitness. I see it on the news, I hear stories in our town, and I see a shift coming. Mental health is paramount to our overall wellbeing and Loveland + South Lifestyle is eager to help provide outlets for this shift to begin in our very own community. In this issue, we focus our lens on a few small businesses in our local community and how they can help you find clarity in mind, body, and soul. From mood boosting recipes to fitness centers (both mental and physical), we have you covered. We introduce you to a lovely family who owns and operates SPENGA of Loveland. They have learned to take life day-by-day and find mental strength in family and fitness. We also give you an insiders view of Living Well Health Group and how this team approaches mental health through a holistic approach. Last but not least, we highlight a long time family business in Loveland, Implant and General Dentistry of Northern Colorado, who specializes in many treatments that provide comfort and healthy options for your well-being. Whatever your goals may be for this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. Many of our articles this month provide motivation in taking that first step. Reach out, learn more, and please don’t forget to let our supporting businesses know that we sent you! Cheers to new goals, new hopes, and a healthy mindset to take you there,

IGDNC Staff demonstrating use of the MLS laser

Implant & General Dentistry of Northern Colorado (IGDNC) has been treating patient’s dental health needs for over 36 years. Drs. Nicole Ferrara, DDS, Theo Mioduski, III, DDS, and Ryan Olson, DDS, make it their goal each day to treat each and every patient as an individual with unique needs and goals. The mission of their practice was originally set forth by the founder of IGDNC, Dr. Ted Mioduski, Jr., DDS, in the late 1980’s. The mission he set forth remains to this day: “Treat patients with the highest quality of comprehensive dental care available, and help patients reach their goals for optimal oral health with education and individually tailored treatment.” That being said, the doctors at IGDNC recognize the need for a variety of approaches when discussing and planning an individuals’ goals for treatment. Some patients are looking to get out of dental or TMJ (jaw) pain. Others want to overcome their extreme fear of visiting a dental office, while some would just like to improve their smile. The doctors at IGDNC have undergone years of extensive training and education to be able to appropriately treat each of these aspects, and many more.

INTRAVENOUS (IV) SEDATION Fear of the dental experience has been demonstrated to be one of the most significant barriers to the delivery of quality dental care. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Sedation dentistry at IGDNC can allow a patient to virtually sleep through their dental procedures. This treatment option may help those with dental fears turn multiple appointments into very few, and can even be helpful for patients who have difficulty with local anesthesia (“getting numb”). Sedation dentistry can be a great option for helping patients overcome their fears of dentistry. It can be utilized for nearly all procedures from basic cleanings on up to complex dental implant surgeries and beyond.

TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT DYSFUNCTION (TMD) Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD)The TMJ ( jaw joint) acts as somewhat of a hinge joint. However, “dysfunction” in the joint, called TMD, can cause severe pain and limited movement. The MLS Laser, used by Dr. Nicole Ferrara and staff, is a “Homogenous Synchronized Diode Laser” that is intended to provide topical heat for the purpose of elevating tissue temperature for the relief of muscle and joint pain, arthritis and muscle spasm. It works by increasing blood flow and oxygen at the cell level to accelerate the healing process. Overall the patient gets increased cellular repair, muscle relaxation and analgesia. Another treatment modality Dr. Ferrara uses on her patients is custom therapeutic oral appliances. These splints work to correctly align the upper and lower jaw bones and joints, allowing the TMJ to function in a balanced neuromuscular state.

ESTHETIC DENTISTRY Esthetic dentistry is another subspecialty at Implant & General Dentistry of Northern Colorado which their doctors excel at. Often, even making very subtle changes to an individual’s smile can produce immediate and stunning outcomes. Patients can see instant results which can boost confidence, and improve their self-image. The process for planning and delivering these results is something the doctors at IGDNC engage in with great care. They spend time listening to the patient, developing a “blueprint” for the plan, and methodically carry out the treatment with the patients’ overall goals in mind. For more information about Implant & General Dentistry of Northern Colorado please visit their website at implantsdds.com, or call 970-663-1000. New patients are always welcome.

A Functional Approach To Whole Health And Well-Being 14

ARTICLE BY AMY HALLAGAN

You would be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t want to be happy and healthy. Kristy Hall, co-owner of Living Well Health Group in Loveland is passionate about helping people like you and me to do that. “It's about the connection of mind, body, and spirit.” - Kristy Hall, Co-owner, Living Well Health Group | Home of Re:New Kristy’s calling is to help people achieve optimal health and whole body healing naturally through a functional medicine approach tailored to each patient's constitution and personal experience. While her journey started with a nutritional and epigenetic focus, her passion has evolved to encompass other non-pharmaceutical ways to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual health. As a board certified nutritionist with numerous certifications, Kristy guides her patients to understand their personal nutritional needs, and to use that knowledge to make eating and behavioral modifications that support health and happiness. Physical and mental well-being really matter to Kristy and her business partner, Dr Sharon Montz, MD. They empower and equip every client to take responsibility for their own health, whether they’re dealing with an existing problem or preparing for healthy aging. Dr. Sharon, an integrative medicine doctor, uses a whole health approach to treat chronic health conditions. This approach, also known as functional medicine, focuses on the connectedness of a person’s whole system rather than only treating the presenting problem. The duo treats a wide range of health issues including chronic fatigue, autoimmune disease, fibromyalgia, digestive issues, hypertension, hormone issues, weight-related problems, chronic pain and more. Kristy and Dr. Sharon are emphatic about getting to the root cause of your health concern. They recognize the connection between your central nervous system (specifically your brain) and the rest of your body, and take time to ask about your cognitive and emotional well-being. Stress, anxiety, and depression cause your brain to rewire itself in damaging ways. The longer unhealthy emotional states persist, the stronger unhealthy neural pathways become. This pattern has a negative impact on your cognitive, emotional, behavioral and physical well-being. The effects of anger, addiction, and PTSD can take a similar toll. CONTINUED >

“Kristy’s calling is to help people achieve optimal health and whole body healing naturally through a functional medicine approach tailored to each patient’s constitution and personal experience.”

INTRODUCING RE:NEW The mind-body connection prompted Kristy and Dr. Sharon to implement their newest suite of services. At Re:New you can experience three state-of-the-art, FDA-approved technologies that promote mental fitness, positivity, and well-being. The Theta Chamber, Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS), and Red Light Bed treat the signs and symptoms of mental health concerns by guiding your brain and body back to an optimal state. The treatments are also effective for improving focus, mental sharpness, and agility. “The technology is a tool to help people who are stuck get unstuck” explains Kristy Hall, Co-owner, Living Well Health Group | Home of Re:New The new technologies help to reset neural pathways by directing the brain toward healthier patterns. For example, rumination and worry trigger an increase in the brain wave that is associated with anxiety and depression. The more often the negative pattern occurs, the harder it is to turn off or manage. The Theta Chamber helps your mind to slow down and reset, which results in

16

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | W E LLNE S S

a reduction of symptoms and improved mind state. Living Well Health Group | Home of Re:New can help you establish healthier, more stable well-being from head to toe. As Kristy says, “We are a perfect partner to guide you in figuring out the next best step.”

THETA CHAMBER The Theta Chamber combines multiple therapies to induce a Theta brainwave state. The user experiences deep relaxation as they lay in the slow-turning pod wearing special goggles that provide visual light stimulation, a headset that delivers binaural beats, and earclips that send frequencies to the brain. Frequencies are tailored to the individual and help the brain to create new neural pathways. A single session can help with anxiety, stress, depression, insomnia, memory, and addictions. The number of sessions needed varies by user.

RTMS Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive treatment that delivers magnetic pulses to your

brain through coils placed near your forehead. The pulses stimulate the part of your brain associated with mood control and depression in an effort to activate areas in the brain that are decreased when you are in a depressive state. rTMS is often used after a session in the Theta Chamber, on its own, or in conjunction with infrared therapy.

RED LIGHT BED The benefit of the Red Light Bed is how it increases energy production and strengthens the mitochondria within cells. The biochemical process helps with healing and cellular rejuvenation. The user lays on a bed resembling a tanning bed under red and blue LED light. The treatment is helpful for skin health and healing, pain, and inflammation. Living Well Health Group | Home of Re:New 1435 W. 29th Street, Loveland 970- 966-8419 livingwellhealthgroup.com

MENTAL HEALTH BOOSTING SALAD Loaded with leafy greens, blueberries, walnuts, and extra-virgin olive oil for an easy way to enjoy brain-protective foods in your diet!

ingredients: Salad: • Dark leafy salad greens, such as baby spinach, baby kale, or other superfood greens • Blueberries • Walnut pieces, toasted or raw Red wine vinaigrette: • ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil • ¼ cup red wine vinegar • ¼ cup unsweetened red grape juice • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 1-3 teaspoons honey, to taste • ½ teaspoon salt • Freshly ground black pepper to taste

directions: 1. To prepare the red wine vinaigrette, measure oil, red wine vinegar, grape juice, lemon juice, honey, salt, and pepper into a mason jar. Tightly screw on lid and shake vigorously until everything is thoroughly combined. 2. Alternatively, you may briskly whisk the ingredients together in a medium bowl or blend them in a blender or mini food processor. 3. Fill a bowl or salad plate with a big pile of leafy greens. Sprinkle blueberries and walnuts over the top. Drizzle with dressing and toss to combine.

notes: To toast the walnuts, adjust the oven rack to the center position and preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spread the walnut pieces on a sheet pan and bake for 4 to 6 minutes, or until fragrant and lightly toasted, watching carefully to prevent burning. Set aside and allow to cool. • Other berries and nuts may be substituted for blueberries and walnuts. • You may add a sprinkle of feta cheese or goat cheese to your salad if you like. • If you think the dressing is sweet enough from the grape juice, you may omit the honey. • Store leftover vinaigrette in the refrigerator. Allow to come to room temperature and shake well before using.

Thriving Together HOW THE OWNERS OF SPENGA LOVELAND HAVE SURVIVED THE PANDEMIC THROUGH THE COMMUNITY THEY’VE DEVELOPED ARTICLE BY KATE SHELTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LOCAL LIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY AND MALLORY SEARGEANT

Cari Frink has always had a love for fitness and she feels passionate about helping others feel their best – mentally and physically. She and her husband, Jason, are high school sweethearts. They grew up in South-Central Colorado and then graduated from CSU. After college, the pair purchased an Anytime Fitness branch in Greeley – a business they owned for many years as they grew their family to include four kids. Ready for more, the Frinks signed to open a SPENGA Gym in Loveland in February 2019. “The timing couldn’t have been worse. We had just committed to this and then the pandemic hit,” Cari describes. Despite the odds being stacked against them, the Frinks dug deep and have continued on. SPENGA is a franchised gym that combines cardio, strength, and flexibility. Each pillar is designed specifically to develop both physical and mental strength. Both Cari and Jason work full-time at the gym. “The pandemic has actually facilitated so much growth,” she says. “If anything, this virus has shown that physical and mental health is incredibly important. I think everyone recognizes that now.” SPENGA has become a beacon of health during the pandemic. People rely on the gym for the physical workout, but also for the community and connection they’ve developed in this isolating time.

“I’m proud of us. It’s been hard. Slower than we would have ever imagined, but we’re still here,” she details. “We have a great team and we’ve developed a great community. Everyone pushes each other and we have so much fun together.” “One thing you can’t get from working out at home is a community,” Cari emphasizes. “I thrive working out with others, and I know that’s the same for most people. SPENGA has become a family for so many people.” Cari admits that running a busy gym, being a mom of four, and being married to her business partner can be a lot. “It’s really stretched me,” she says. “But it’s so good. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial side and I want to show my kids that you can be a good mom and a good business owner. I love working for ourselves and I’m grateful to be setting this example for our kids. And working with Jason is actually really fun.” Cari credits the fact that they’ve weathered the pandemic with a brand new business to their own mental strength. Both avidly work out and they know that they’re better able to manage all of their responsibilities when they make the time to exercise. “It’s been proven that working out has such a big impact on mental health. I can feel it when I don’t work out, which is why I make it a priority.” “What I love about my jobs is that I’m my own boss. I set my own ceiling, no one can CONTINUED >

tell me when to stop. It also means that I have to juggle it all. I have a lot of balls in the air but I wouldn’t want it any other way,” she says. With the Frinks’ steadfast dedication, SPENGA is now coming into its own. “I’m just really looking forward to the future. My goal is to help as many people as I can. I want people to be the best versions of themselves and to feel good – all around,” Cari says. “I want you to be a part of our community.” SPENGA Loveland 1767 Rocky Mountain Ave, Loveland 970-236-1182 lovelandco.spenga.com

WINTER ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES With so much focus on children’s physical health, sometimes children’s mental health goes overlooked. When winter rolls around, temperatures drop, children are less likely to spend time running and playing outdoors. Reduced physical activity is known to have negative impacts on children’s physical and mental health. To fight the winter blues, we encourage playtime, sports, and family games right here in the Loveland + South backyard!

1. Clueology Rooms For those older kids looking to really be challenged mentally this winter, an escape room is the way to go. Become a part of the game by solving problems, creating contraptions, working together as a team, to overcome challenges in a realistic environment. Check out Loveland Escape Rooms Clueology to learn more.

2. Arcades The Flipside in Downtown Loveland is a great way to get your kids out of the house and play some old school video games. With a great family-friendly atmosphere, this lively arcade is a place where kids can let loose, get some energy out, and still have fun. Another option is The Summit in Windsor, offering bowling, laser tag, and old school video arcade games, all while enjoying delicious food and drinks in a family-friendly environment.

3. Recreation and Aquatic Centers Nothing speaks of summer like swimsuits, goggles, and waterslides. Get your kids moving by heading to the Berthoud, Chilson (Loveland), or Windsor Recreation Centers. Complete with cliff diving (Berthoud), lazy rivers, lifestyle pools for recreation and fitness purposes, and water play structures.
